When an IT Company and NGO Unite for Good: A Government School Turned Relief Camp Revives

 When an IT

Thiruvananthapuram, 4th June 2024: Imagine a school where the cheerful voices of children were replaced by the silence of abandonment, where once-bustling classrooms stood empty, and the grounds lay in disrepair. This was the grim reality of Govt. U. P. School, Valiyathura in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, after it became a refuge for families devastated by the 2018 Ockhi disaster and relentless sea attacks. However, thanks to the remarkable collaboration between Technopark-based Acsia Technologies, a global leader in automotive software, and Kanal Innovations Charitable Trust, through their “Gift a Dream” initiative, this story has taken a hopeful turn.

On June 3rd, the school celebrated its inaugural ‘Praveshanolsavam,’ marking not just the first day of school but a triumphant revival. The event included the inauguration of a smart seminar hall and a mini library, along with the distribution of school kits to students, turning a symbol of despair into a beacon of hope and learning. Sakshi Mohan IAS, Assistant Collector, Thiruvananthapuram, handed over the key of the smart seminar hall to school officials. Jijimon Chandran, Founder and CEO of Acsia Technologies, distributed school kits to students, ensuring they start the academic year fully equipped and ready to learn.

“This is not just a building; it’s a place where our new wishes and dreams are formed. In this community hall, everyone can come together to celebrate their achievements and share ideas. The library will be a space where all can delve into the world of books and develop a lasting love for learning,” said Sakshi Mohan IAS, Assistant Collector, Thiruvananthapuram, while inaugurating the Praveshanolsavam. “This transformation would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of Kanal and Acsia , to whom we extend our heartfelt gratitude,” she added.

Valiyathura Govt. U.P. School once served as a lifeline for families devastated by the 2018 Ockhi disaster and relentless sea attacks. Over five long years, nearly 120 families found refuge within its walls, transforming the school into a relief camp. Local residents, disheartened, had moved their children to other schools. The school, which once boasted over 200 students, had gradually lost its purpose as classrooms were abandoned and the grounds turned into a wasteland.

“From being a refugee camp to becoming a vibrant school again, Valiyathura Govt. U.P. School’s revival is inspiring and shows what community spirit and corporate social responsibility can achieve together. As part of our CSR initiative, Acsia is committed to supporting education and sustainability projects,” said Jijimon Chandran..

The number of students has surged from just 30 last year to nearly 100, breathing new life into the classrooms. Clearing the garbage heaps, remnants of the site being a relief camp, and reclaiming the school from the overgrown forest, Acsia and Kanal culminated their efforts in the creation of a smart seminar hall, a new children’s library, and provided school kits to every student, ensuring they start the academic year fully equipped and ready to learn. The transformation has been nothing short of extraordinary.

“It is a story of resilience and hope. Seeing the abandoned school filled with students once again reaffirms our commitment to fostering educational opportunities and rebuilding lives,” said Adv. Anson P. D. Alexander, Director, Kanal..

Acsia and Kanal’s tireless efforts have not only restored a physical space but have also reignited the dreams and aspirations of countless children and their families.

Attendees of the program included Shajitha Nazar, Councillor of Vallakkadavu Ward; Biju Kumar, Headmaster of Govt. U.P. School, Valiyathura; Khyrunnisa A, renowned Indian author; as well as teachers, parents, and children who gathered to witness this remarkable transformation.

India’s Ultra-Rich Redirecting Their Investment Focus to Residential Real Estate

India’s Ultra-Rich

Sunil Sisodiya, Founder, Geetanjali Homestate

In recent years, India’s ultra-rich have been shifting their investment portfolios towards residential real estate, marking a significant departure from traditional avenues like equities, bonds, and international assets. This trend is driven by a confluence of factors including economic resilience, lifestyle changes, and evolving market dynamics, which are reshaping the landscape of luxury real estate in the country.

Economic Resilience and Stability

One of the primary reasons for this shift is the perceived stability and security that real estate investments offer. Unlike the volatile stock market or the uncertain returns from international investments, real estate is seen as a tangible asset that can provide steady appreciation over time. The economic turbulence brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the desirability of real estate as a safe haven for wealth preservation.

The Indian economy, despite its challenges, has shown remarkable resilience. With the government’s focus on infrastructure development and urbanization, the real estate sector is poised for sustained growth. The introduction of policies such as the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA) has also instilled greater transparency and trust in the market, making it more attractive for high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs).

Lifestyle Changes and Demand for Luxury

Another significant driver is the evolving lifestyle preferences among the ultra-rich. The pandemic has underscored the importance of spacious and well-equipped homes, as people have spent more time indoors. This has led to an increased demand for luxury residences that offer comfort, privacy, and modern amenities. High-net-worth individuals are now prioritizing properties that provide not just a home, but a holistic living experience.

Developers are responding to this demand by offering bespoke residences with features such as private gardens, home offices, wellness centers, and smart home technologies. The concept of ‘home’ has expanded beyond a mere living space to include areas for work, recreation, and wellness, driving up the value and appeal of high-end residential properties.

Strategic Investment Opportunities

The shift towards residential real estate is also influenced by strategic investment opportunities in emerging markets within India. Cities like Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad are witnessing a surge in luxury real estate projects, attracting the attention of HNWIs. These cities offer a combination of robust infrastructure, cosmopolitan lifestyles, and business opportunities, making them attractive investment destinations.

Furthermore, the depreciation of the Indian rupee against major currencies has made Indian real estate more appealing to non-resident Indians (NRIs) and global investors. The prospect of higher returns on investment, coupled with favorable currency exchange rates, is driving significant capital inflows into the residential real estate sector.

Case in Point: Mumbai and Delhi

Mumbai and Delhi continue to be hotspots for luxury real estate, reflecting the broader trend of increased investments in residential properties. These cities offer unparalleled access to business hubs, cultural amenities, and elite social circles, making them prime locations for the ultra-rich to invest in.

In Mumbai, areas like Worli, Bandra, and South Mumbai are witnessing a boom in luxury real estate, with developers launching premium projects that cater to the discerning tastes of HNWIs. Similarly, in Delhi, upscale neighborhoods like Lutyens’ Delhi, Vasant Vihar, and Golf Links are seeing a renewed interest from wealthy buyers looking for prestigious addresses.

Future Outlook

The future of residential real estate investments by India’s ultra-rich looks promising. As the country continues to recover from the pandemic, the demand for luxury homes is expected to rise further. Developers will likely continue to innovate and cater to the sophisticated needs of HNWIs, ensuring that the residential real estate market remains a lucrative investment avenue.

In conclusion, the redirection of investment focus by India’s ultra-rich towards residential real estate is a testament to the sector’s potential for stability, growth, and lifestyle enhancement. This trend underscores a broader shift in investment strategies, driven by economic resilience, changing lifestyle preferences, and strategic opportunities within the real estate market. As the market evolves, residential real estate is set to remain a cornerstone of wealth management for India’s elite.

Covestro becomes a shareholder in company BioBTX

Covestro becomes

By participating as a strategic partner in the company BioBTX, Covestro is enabling the construction of the world’s first innovative demonstration plant for the BioBTX technology in the Netherlands. The technology makes it possible to produce chemicals such as benzene, toluene, and xylene from organic and mixed plastic waste. These aromatics are essential building blocks for the chemical industry and are used in plastics production, among other things.

Covestro is investing a mid-single-digit million euro amount in the scale-up from the Netherlands. In addition to Covestro, the financial investors Invest-NL and Infinity Recycling are also involved in the project. Once operational, the demonstration plant will convert 20 kilotons of mixed plastic waste per year. Following successful upscaling of the technology over the past years, the demonstration plant is a crucial intermediate step for the technology to be implemented on an industrial scale.

“Our vision is to fully align with the circular economy and climate neutrality, and we are pursuing all innovative solutions that bring us closer to this goal,” says Thorsten Dreier, CTO of Covestro. “Chemical recycling can make a significant contribution to closing the loop and the BioBTX ICCP technology is a promising way of using waste to recover raw materials that we use in production.” Unlike other recycling technologies, this technology also makes mixed waste from different source materials suitable for the process.

The investment in BioBTX is part of Covestro’s venture capital program, in which the company invests in young start-ups and scale-ups with innovative products, solutions or business models and thus promotes entrepreneurial activities in and alongside its core business. The partnership with BioBTX also includes two joint development agreements. In the development projects, Covestro is researching further possibilities for recycling its products and contributing know-how in the field of digitalization to improve plant performance.

Covestro has been cooperating with BioBTX for more than four years and, together with the company, has launched the EU-funded Circular Foam project, which is working on the recycling of rigid polyurethane foam using pyrolysis.

“We are pleased that we can contribute our expertise in the areas of application development, digital research and development and chemical recycling to the project and thus provide the impetus for a new, Europe-wide circular ecosystem for plastic waste,” explains Torsten Heinemann, Head of Group Innovation and Sustainability at Covestro.

“With its participation in BioBTX and the construction of the demonstration plant, Covestro is enabling an important step towards a sustainable chemical industry,” says Ton Vries, CEO of BioBTX. “The production of renewable aromatics from plastic waste and biomass is a prerequisite for circular chemistry.”

The demonstration plant is scheduled to go into operation by early 2027. Further information on the project can be found here.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Celebrates Environment Month: Unite for Responsible Resource Consumption

Toyota Kirloskar Motor

Bangalore, 4th June 2024: Marking the ‘World Environment Day’, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today announced the kick-off of its ‘Toyota Environment Month’, a dedicated month (June 2024) to further foster eco-consciousness and advocating for a greener, sustainable future. Through a spectrum of initiatives intricately woven into its long-term vision encapsulated by the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 (TEC 2050) and this year’s theme “Unite for Responsible Resource Consumption towards becoming Global No.1”, the company aims to ignite awareness and action towards environmental stewardship with a key focus on water management and natural ecosystem revival with afforestation. This resonates strongly with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) theme for World Environment Day 2024, which underscores the critical issues of Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience, enfolded by the slogan “Our Land, Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration”.

Over the years, TKM has consciously adopted sustainable business practices and transformed from a carmaker to a mobility company. Keeping with its principle of ‘Respect for the Planet’, Toyota globally announced the ‘Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050’ (TEC 2050) in October 2015, comprising six environmental challenges. The first set of 3 challenges focuses on achieving carbon neutrality from our products, and its entire value chain including the manufacturing activities. The latter 3 challenges aim to create a net positive impact by minimizing and optimizing water usage, enabling a recycled-based society, and establishing a future society in ‘Harmony with Nature’.

To manage our resources responsibly, TKM has adopted a holistic approach and is actively engaging in various sustainable initiatives. The company has achieved significant milestones including a remarkable rise in groundwater level which is at 16.1 feet post monsoon FY 2022-23 (from 90ft in 2009), rainwater harvesting ponds with 51,000 m3 capacity for manufacturing and non-manufacturing applications. 95% of the water requirement for production is met through recycled and rainwater harvesting. Further, TKM is promoting a recycling-based society with enhanced recyclability of waste up to 96%.

As stewards of the environment, the company has taken significant steps in nature conservation. Over the years, TKM has planted over 328,000 trees across 112 acres within its factory premises using the Miyawaki concept. This focuses on restoring and reconstructing the forests based on the concept of “Potential Natural Vegetation”, and this very application has helped in creating a ‘Natural Forest’, within the premises of TKM, by planting native species to create biodiversity and aid food chain and ecology.

To further amplify the efforts in restoring the native biodiversity, TKM has established a state-of-the-art ‘Ecozone’, an experiential learning center with 17 theme parks located at TKM’s plant facility, which continues to contribute through knowledge-sharing on various aspects of nature conservation including climate change, waste-to-value, ecological balance, water resource management and so forth. Thus far, 42,000+ students have been sensitised, imbibing positive behavioral change to live in harmony with nature.

Marking the celebration of the environment month in June, TKM with its enhanced efforts continues to create awareness amongst its stakeholders on water scenario & conservation methods, alongside exclusive eco-webinars conducted by environmental experts. During the eco-driven month, TKM aims to actively engage with local communities through a myriad of eco-activities including plantation drives at school, rejuvenation project for local lakes/ponds, and clean-up efforts aimed at preserving natural habitats. Activities such as “Toyota Swachh Abhiyan, “RaaR” (Recycling as a Responsibility / e.g., office uniform recycling), Toyota Eco Club, Eco Family Walk (ecozone), etc., are also being planned throughout the month, to promote sustainable lifestyle amongst the stakeholders including employees & their families, business associates, members of Toyota group companies, school children and community members in and around Bidadi and Ramnagara regions.

Speaking about TKM’s Environment Month celebration, Mr. B. Padmanabha, Executive Vice President & Director of Manufacturing – at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “At Toyota Kirloskar Motor, we recognize that environmental and social sustainability is just as crucial as the economic progression. We are fully committed to the six environmental challenges that Toyota is trying to address globally. Our focus is not just on products & our manufacturing operations but the entire value chain, while also giving back to the communities where we operate.

By observing Environment Month, we continue to strive, inspire innovation, and drive tangible changes for a better tomorrow. TKM has been steering the eco-friendly journey strongly and the significant milestones of 100% Renewable Energy in grid electricity, using only 5% freshwater for our manufacturing, recycling of 96% of waste, etc. are a testament to it. Under this year’s Environment Month theme “Unite for Responsible Resource Consumption Towards Becoming Global No.1”, together with our stakeholders, we continue to make a significant impact on resource conservation through various eco interventions with a special focus in the areas of water management, land ecosystem revival (plantation drives) and reduction in energy consumption. Globally, our eco-efforts are driven to minimize the environmental footprints in every path that we undertake in a more holistic manner, thereby catalysing positive changes, and creating a happy place to live”, he added.

Previously, TKM has been conferred with various accolades/recognitions for its eco commitment in the respective categories, to name a few, TERI Water Sustainability Awards, CII Sustainability Award for Biodiversity, CII Award for Water & Hazardous Waste Management, CII-SR EHS Excellence Awards in Water Management, CII GreenCo Platinum Company’ Award for Environmental Excellence and Sustainable Leadership, etc.

TKM remains committed to its core values of sustainability, environmental responsibility, and innovation. In pursuit of Carbon Neutrality, Toyota remains steadfast in enhancing its clean mobility solutions, adopting multiple vehicle technology pathways including alternate fuels. Stakeholder engagement lies at the heart of TKM’s environmental advocacy. This collaborative spirit is further underscored by TKM’s Environment Management System, which integrates ecologically sound practices across its business ecosystem including its supplier and dealer partners, covering the wider spread of eco-consciousness, plantation & clean-up drives, ‘No Plastic’ campaign, lowering water usage, reduction of carbon footprints in their operations and so forth. Driven by its strong belief in collaborative action, Toyota extends an open invitation to stakeholders, partners, and individuals passionate about environmental preservation to join hands in their sustainable endeavors, catalyzing positive change within the community.
