Vivaan Shah, Veer Rajwant Singh , Sangeeta Dutta discuss Books to OTT, Cinema and Social Media on the Final Day of the 15th AKLF
Kolkata, February 13, 2024: In the final session of Day 3 at the 15th Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival, actors Vivaan Shah and Veer Rajwant Singh and writer Sangeeta Dutta discussed the art of adaptation, with a specific focus on how books can be translated across movies, social media, and the OTT. Speaking to moderator Ushoshi Sengupta, all three experts in their respective fields discussed how books have found a place across ages through different forms of dissemination. The session was titled, ‘When Words Take Wing.’

The speakers acknowledged how we live in an era where content is king and how the present day is the best time to create new stories, whether through adaptation or original storytelling. Speaking on their experience of working in or with adaptations, Vivaan Shah said, “The most interesting aspect of working in adaptations is getting to translate my imagination and acting it out in real life.” On the other hand, Sangeeta Dutta said, “There are no hard and fast rules about adaptations. No matter how far apart they are in time, there’s always some space left for the scriptwriter’s vision.”
Continuing with the discussion on contemporizing older works through adaptations, Veer Rajwant Singh brought forth the example of Vishal Bharadwaj. He said, ‘’There can never be a better adaptation than that of Maqbool or Omkara as done by Vishal Bharadwaj Sir.” All panellists and moderators present agreed upon this comment. The central argument was how each adaptation brings a new flavour, a new sense of refreshment to an original story. Sangeeta Datta added, “In my opinion, The two best adaptations have been The Color Purple and The Talented Mr. Ripley.”
Agreeing to the concept of each adaptation bringing something new, Veer Rajwant Singh agreed that even while adapting for social media or OTT content, the director and the scriptwriter have the right to bring forth their visualizations. Speaking on social media and its impact on content creation, everyone agreed that while we seldom have control over what we consume, it is simultaneously a great place to put out new versions of better stories. Sangeeta Dutta said, “I would love to write a novel based on The Three of Us, an exceptional story on OTT.” When asked whether it was challenging to churn out content for social media, Veer Rajwant Singh added, “It’s a choice you have to make.” On adaptations, he further said, “Whatever is written is universal. Whatever is read is personal.” Meaning there’s always more space left for personal interpretations to continue.

Meghalaya Cancer Conclave 2024: Uniting Forces to Enhance Cancer Care
Mumbai, February 13, 2024: The Government of Meghalaya proudly convened the Meghalaya Cancer Conclave 2024. Spearheaded by Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare, the two-day event commenced on February 12. Themed “Close the Care Gap,” the conclave aims to address critical issues surrounding cancer care and treatment within the region.

The Conclave has convened key stakeholders, including oncologists, cancer researchers, scholars, NGOs, industry leaders, top bureaucrats, and media representatives. Through diverse perspectives and expertise, participants engaged in meaningful discussions and collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing cancer care strategies in Meghalaya.
The conclave saw the participation of distinguished dignitaries, including Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, Hon’ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Shri. Sampath Kumar IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Meghalaya, Chairman – State Cancer Society of Meghalaya; Shri. Ram Kumar IAS, Secretary, Dept. of Health & Family Welfare, among others.
A highlight of the event is the spotlight on the Meghalaya Cancer Care initiative, also known as ‘Meg Can Care,’ launched on May 31, 2023. This initiative aims to tackle five specific cancers: Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Esophageal Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Oral Cancer. To date, 46,713 beneficiaries have been screened, with 20,891 identified as at-risk beneficiaries. Additionally, the State Cancer Society has screened 1,392 beneficiaries, identifying 89 confirmed cases and 71 suspected cases within the state. This groundbreaking project underscores the government’s commitment to promoting early detection and screening measures to ensure the well-being of the people of Meghalaya.
Speaking at the conclave, Smt. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, Hon’ble Health Minister, emphasized the need for unity among stakeholders to effectively address the challenge of cancer. She stressed the importance of action over mere discussions, advocating for the extension of the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) to provide financial assistance to affected families.
Hon’ble Minister said, “I appeal to all stakeholders that unless we unite, this challenge will persistently confront us. We must stop discussions; we have to act. The Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) must extend its reach to every affected family and individual grappling with cancer. Ensuring adequate funding is essential to provide financial assistance for cancer patients. We must streamline procedures and eliminate unnecessary formalities for all cancer patients. Prevention is paramount, and early detection is key to combating this dreadful disease. Every citizen of the state should be relieved of the burden of cancer care, and patients must feel secure during their treatment.”
Shri Sampath Kumar IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Health & Family Welfare, lauded the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme’s contribution to universal health coverage. He added, “Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme is one of the first, you know, insurance schemes, which aims to provide universal health coverage, UHC. I am telling you, not even big countries, like developed countries have not done universal health coverage, UHC. But Meghalaya aimed to do it. The beauty is that we aimed to do it. Statistically speaking, through the MHIS premium, State Government paid about 165 crores to the insurance company. And the claims are 200 crores. And almost close to 2 lakh households have taken MHIS. And the government spent about, you know, almost like close to 200 crores. So, that means each family would have taken almost Rs 10,000 as benefit from the insurance program, etc. Maternal deaths have come down by 50 percent in the last 3 years; it is the sharpest decline in any part of the world.”
Secretary of Health & FW, Ram Kumar S, IAS, outlined the comprehensive anti-tobacco program implemented by the government and emphasized the importance of grassroots-level engagement in promoting tobacco cessation and early detection initiatives.
A cancer survivor, Smti Yasmine Lyngdoh, who was diagnosed with cancer during her childhood, reflected on the need of taking the campaign to the rural areas. She said with hope, “I hope everybody will get proper treatment, because we all deserve it.”
A Young survivor during Covid was diagnosed with medulo blastoma, a tumor in the brain with the involvement of the spinal cord. His mother stated, “For parents like us, who had lost hope, to even see a future with our son, we are very happy now that our son is undergoing treatment. We were able to surpass the hardships, and we are very thankful to the doctors and nurses and the staff.
We should not be afraid from getting ourselves screened and undertaking the necessary treatments.”
Another cancer survivor, Smti Warimeki Lyngwa, shared her story and reflected on the importance of awareness on removing taboo on cancer. She said, “I think having this conclave will help people discuss about the issues that a lot of cancer patients are facing at grassroots level. I hope that this conclave will be very constructive.”
The Meghalaya Cancer Conclave 2024 served as a pivotal platform for exchanging ideas, sharing knowledge, and fostering partnerships aimed at improving cancer care accessibility and outcomes for communities across Meghalaya.

Empowering Women: Menstrual Hygiene Awareness
By S.R.Karthika,Tutor, Saveetha College of Physiotherapy
Introduction:
Menstrual hygiene is a crucial aspect of women’s health, yet it remains a topic often shrouded in silence and stigma, particularly in India. Lack of awareness and misconceptions surrounding menstruation can have profound effects on young women’s physical and emotional well-being. This write-up aims to shedlight on the importance of menstrual hygiene awareness among young women in India.
Challenges Faced by Young Women:
Lack of Education:
Many young women in India grow up without proper education on menstruation. This lack of awareness can lead to confusion, fear, and unhygienic practices during their menstrual cycles.
Social Stigma:
Societal taboos and cultural norms contribute to the silence surrounding menstruation. Girls may feel ashamed or embarrassed to discuss their menstrual health openly, leading to a perpetuation of misinformation.
Limited Access to Resources:
In rural areas, access to sanitary products and proper sanitation facilities may be limited. This poses a significant challenge to maintaining good menstrual hygiene practices.
Importance of Menstrual Hygiene Awareness:
Health and Well-being:
Proper menstrual hygiene is essential for preventing infections and maintaining overall reproductive health. Awareness campaigns can educate young women about the importance of using clean and safe menstrual products and adopting hygienic practices.
Empowerment:
Menstrual hygiene awareness empowers young women by dismantling taboos and fostering a sense of confidence and self-esteem. When girls are informed, they can make informed choices about their health without fear or shame.
Education and Productivity:
Lack of access to menstrual hygiene products and facilities can lead to absenteeism among schoolgirls. By promoting awareness and ensuring access to necessary resources, we can contribute to increased school attendance and better academic performance.
Strategies for Menstrual Hygiene Awareness:
Education Programs:
Implement comprehensive menstrual hygiene education programs in schools and communities to ensure that young girls have accurate information about menstruation and its management.
Community Engagement:
Involve community leaders, parents, and local influencers in promoting open discussions about menstrual health. Breaking the silence at the community level helps in creating a supportive environment.
Distribution of Menstrual Products:
Ensure access to affordable and sustainable menstrual products, especially in underserved areas. This can be achieved through government initiatives, NGOs, and public-private partnerships.
Digital Awareness Campaigns:
Utilize digital platforms to disseminate information about menstrual hygiene, reaching a wide audience and breaking down geographical barriers.
Conclusion:
Menstrual hygiene awareness is a crucial step towards promoting the health, dignity, and empowerment of young women in India. By addressing the challenges and implementing effective strategies, we can contribute to a society where menstruation is not a source of shame but an integral part of a woman’s life, celebrated with dignity and respect.

Mumbai, February 13, 2024: The success story of edtech unicorn Emeritus, a global leader in delivering accessible and affordable high-quality education, is now a case study by the prestigious Harvard Business School (HBS), the company announced today. ‘Emeritus: Achieving Impact, Providing Access’, traces the first phase of the company’s founding journey by co-founders Ashwin Damera and Chaitanya Kalipatnapu, showcasing its innovative approach to education which has expanded opportunities to learners globally, and previews the road that lies ahead.

The case study, which will serve as a guide for mission-driven entrepreneurs and professionals, and be used in courses offered by Harvard, follows the journey of Damera, an HBS alumnus, and Kalipatnapu, an alumnus of INSEAD, who shared a dream of making societal impact by bringing access to high-quality education. Authored by HBS senior lecturer Ashish Nanda and research associate Zack Kurtovich, it intricately chronicles the origins of Emeritus’s transformative journey from idea to achieving global scale, made possible by a team united by the mission, and through the strength of strategic partnerships with world-class universities.
Emeritus, a pioneer in online executive education, led the way by offering Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs), cohort-based programs with a mix of synchronous and asynchronous elements, high-touch student support, and live faculty interactions. On how the company’s offerings came to life, the case study states, “…participation in executive education programs was often not feasible for individuals from developing regions, as they typically were prohibitively expensive and required participants to travel to the university campuses. The study further notes that as the company’s growth accelerated in collaboration with top universities around the world, Damera and Kalipatnapu’s “leadership in tandem was critical to maintaining a sense of momentum and a strong culture within the firm”. Setting the company distinctly apart from competitors, the case notes the success metrics for the Emeritus co-founders are not valuations or financial returns, but the impact on individuals, companies, and society.
Announcing this milestone of being featured as an HBS case study, Ashwin Damera, Co-Founder and CEO, of Emeritus, said, “Chaitanya and I embarked on this journey to break down barriers to high-quality education. 39% Indians’ potential love interest turning out to be scammers
India – February 13, 2024 — Today, McAfee, a global leader in online protection, unveils its second annual “Modern Love” study, about the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in online dating, and the implications this has for increased catfishing and romance scams. This study surveyed 7,000 people in seven countries worldwide, including India. The rise of powerful AI tools complicates the online dating landscape. By leveraging easy-to-use AI tools, romance scammers can craft convincing messages and realistic profile images to trick people looking for love online.
The key findings of this study revealed that 77% of Indians said they’d come across fake profiles and/or photos that look AI-generated on dating websites or apps, or on social media. Further, the prevalence of romance scams emerged with 39% of Indians saying their conversations with a potential love interest online turned out to be with a scammer. 26% said they’d talked with a potential love interest, to discover it was actually an AI-generated bot and not a real person.
91% of Indians revealed they, or someone they know, have been contacted by a stranger through social media or text message and started to “chat” with them regularly to know them better. With that in mind, those looking for love are often more vulnerable to scams when connecting with strangers, and cybercriminals use that vulnerability to their advantage by engaging in long and sophisticated attempts to steal from victims.
Furthermore, the study also discovered that more than half, 65% Indians have used ChatGPT/AI to help create pics or other content for a dating app. Specifically this Valentine’s Day, 56% of Indians are planning to or considering using AI to write messages for their love interest as it helps boost their confidence. However, this contrasts sharply with people’s feelings about receiving AI-generated content: 60% of people said they would be hurt or offended if they found out their Valentine’s message was written by a machine / Artificial Intelligence.
Despite mixed feelings and experiences, the effectiveness of AI is undeniable: 81% of people reported receiving more interest and better responses using AI-generated content than when they drafted or used their own original content.
And if you’re not on dating apps/sites, the McAfee Labs team reveals you still need to exercise caution online with an increase in Valentine-related scams. This includes Valentine-related malware campaigns (25% surge), malicious URLs (300% increase), and a variety of romance-themed spam and email scams (a staggering 400% increase), with the majority focused on Valentine’s shopping and gifts. McAfee Labs expects these numbers will continue rising as February 14 gets closer, urging vigilance.
“The possibilities of AI are endless, and unfortunately, so are the perils. For people who are shy about starting conversations, short on time to craft the perfect message, or whose photos could be brightened, AI offers tools to help enjoy all the fun and excitement that comes with online dating.,” said Steve Grobman, McAfee’s Chief Technology Officer.
“Unfortunately, we know cybercriminals also use AI to scale malicious activity. With love-seekers spending more time online leading up to Valentine’s Day, scammers are using AI to pose as love interests to steal your money or personal information. We encourage people to balance romantic hope with healthy skepticism, to pause before sharing sensitive information online, and to ensure they use the right tools to protect their privacy, identity, and personal information,” continued Grobman.
Steps for protecting yourself from online romance and AI scams.
People can help prevent financial and emotional heartbreak by taking the following steps:
- Scrutinize any direct messages you receive from a love interest, via a dating app or social media. One way to spot a scammer is to watch for consistent, AI-generated messages. These are often quite generic or lack substance. Additionally, it’s important to be sure not to click on any links in messages you receive from someone you have not met in person.
- Do a reverse-image search of any profile pictures the person uses. If the search results show that your love interest is associated with another name or with details that don’t match up with what they’ve told you, you may be chatting with a scammer.
- Never send money or gifts to someone you haven’t met in person, even if they send you money first. Scammers often send money to soften up their victim and build trust, so don’t share personal or account information, even if the other person is forthcoming with theirs.
- Talk to someone you trust about this new love interest. It can be easy to miss things that don’t add up when you are feeling hopeful and excited. So, pay attention to your friends or family when they show signs of concern, and take the relationship slowly.
- Invest in tools to help identify online scams. McAfee’s portfolio of products includes innovative protection features, such as McAfee Scam Protection, that detects and protects you in real time from never-before-seen threats and scams – whether that’s dangerous links shared on text, email, search results, or social media. In addition, McAfee recently announced deepfake detection is on the horizon, furthering McAfee’s commitment to use AI to fight AI scams and help arm consumers with the ability to detect deepfakes.
Survey Methodology
The survey was conducted online in January 2024 by Market Research Company, MSI-ACI via email inviting people 18 years and older to complete an online questionnaire. In total 7,000 adults completed the survey from 7 countries included the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, India, and Japan.
