Treat wildlife and farm animals responsibly, says World Animal Protection on World Environment Day, 2024
1st July 2024 New Delhi, Delhi, India On the occasion of World Environment Day, on 5th June 2024, World Animal Protection is calling for the responsible treatment of all animals, in the wild and in farms, so that their welfare and the protection of the environment can be properly undertaken.

Recent research undertaken by World Animal Protection shows an estimated 5.5 billion wild animals being kept in cruel conditions on commercial wildlife farms around the world. Researchers have found an astonishing lack of transparency and inadequate monitoring across the global multi-billion-dollar industry, where sentient animals are treated as mere components in a cruel production line. Shockingly, some captive wildlife populations are now larger than those living free.
Case studies in the report detail some of the industries where urgent action is needed – including:
- Bear farming in China – Some 20,000 bears are farmed for their bile on dozens of farms to satiate the demand of the bear bile industry in the country.
- Elephant breeding in Thailand – The majority of nearly 3,000 elephants in the country are bred in captivity and used in 246 venues for tourism. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of elephant venues increased by a staggering 134 percent.
- Lion and other big cat farming in South Africa – Approximately 8,000 big cats are bred at 366 known facilities in the country and used for multiple purposes including tourist entertainment, trophy hunting, and body parts exports to Asia for traditional medicine.
While some wildlife trade and wildlife farming practices are legal, researchers have now started questioning the impact of legal wildlife trade on conservation and animal welfare. World Animal Protection notes with concern the rise in the trade of exotic animals in India and implores all law enforcement agencies to bolster efforts to tackle this trade.
Several notable influencers are advocating the end of the usage of wildlife in entertainment in India and abroad. The recent incident of an elephant collapsing in Jaipur due to the ongoing heatwave shows that the activity is fundamentally cruel and untenable. Elephants are wild animals with a significant role in maintaining the ecology of the area they inhabit. Removing them from their natural habitat constitutes not only cruelty to the individual animals being captured but also affects the environment they share with other animals.
World Animal calls for the riding elephants of Amer Fort and Haathi Gaon to be retired to wildlife-friendly sanctuaries following a proper protocol. World Animal Protection also insists that any transfer of elephants from one region to another adheres to legal guidelines and is undertaken with proper due diligence.
Since the highlight of World Environment Day 2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification, and building drought resilience, it is pertinent to state that factory farming processes involving the mass rearing of animals in intensive conditions harm the environment and is detrimental to animal welfare and human health. Numerous studies across the world have established that intensive animal rearing in pristine forest habitats destroys the existent ecology of the area and damages the habitat of wildlife in the natural state while on the other hand, forests are being cleared to grow feed for these farmed animals leading to dislocation of wildlife resulting in human-animal conflict. Such practices also employ corrupt practices of big multinational corporations with scant regard for the welfare of local people and concern for the environment. These activities, combined with the effects of climate change that have given rise to expanding desertification have now been widely regarded as undesirable for sustainable growth, human and animal wellbeing and environmentally responsible practices.
“World Animal Protection is working to transform the food system by prioritizing respect for animals and nature. We envision a food system that is equitable, sustainable, resilient, and capable of feeding the global population. We encourage people to make responsible choices and shift towards plant-based protein options, benefiting animals, people, and the planet. This shift also helps protect wildlife and their habitats.
We call upon governments, corporations, and individuals to help free wild animals from cruel exploitation, ensuring they thrive in abundant natural habitats that are humanely protected for the benefit of all living beings. This will help improve animal welfare, environmental protection, and wildlife conservation by addressing the destruction of natural habitats caused by intensive meat production.
Additionally, responsible food choices and wildlife protection measures align with the Prime Minister’s vision for a sustainable lifestyle under the LiFE (Lifestyle For Environment) initiative of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. So, let’s take a pledge on this occasion of World Environment Day to make responsible choices to protect animals and their habitats,” says Gajender Kumar Sharma, Country Director, of World Animal Protection in India.
We are also witnessing the gratuitous use of antibiotics in poultry farming across the world, including in India which is leading to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) which is now a matter of real concern (our recent study on AMR). There is now considerable research, backed by expert opinion, that lessening meat consumption and replacing animal products with plant-based products is good for holistic health under the emerging concept of One Health, which encompasses animal welfare, human health, and environmental protection. To this end, World Animal Protection recently participated in the 3rd Plant-Based Foods Summit of India organized by the Plant-Based Foods Industry Association (PBFIA) and presented by Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), and Indian Chamber of Commerce. This was the third consecutive year of participating in this remarkable annual summit. It was a multifaceted presence, engaging investors, corporates & other attendees, proposing collaboration opportunities, and advocating for farm animal welfare within the Indian Food Industry. It is hoped activities like these will forward the cause of environmentalism currently espoused by the United Nations under the aegis of World Environment Day in 2024 and beyond.

Resurgence of Homeownership: Decline of the “Uberisation” Trend in the Residential Sector
1st July 2024 Delhi NCR, India In recent years, the residential sector has witnessed a significant shift away from the “Uberisation” trend, where renting was preferred over owning homes. This trend, which mirrored the disruptive influence of ride-sharing services like Uber in the transportation industry, gained momentum, particularly among younger generations who prized flexibility and were wary of long-term commitments associated with homeownership. However, recent data and insights suggest a notable change in consumer preferences post-COVID, indicating a resurgence in the desire for homeownership.
Anshul Jain, the Chief Executive for India & South East Asia at Cushman & Wakefield, highlights this shift. “The housing demand in India was quite muted from 2013 to 2019, with prices remaining stagnant. There was a significant inclination towards renting during this period, especially among youngsters who didn’t want to commit to owning properties,” he stated in a recent video interview with PTI. “However, the COVID pandemic fundamentally altered this mindset. People realized the stability and security that comes with owning a home. The demand for larger houses and the low-interest-rate environment post-pandemic further fueled this trend,” he added.
This sentiment is echoed by industry leaders from major real estate groups. Mohit Goel, Managing Director of Omaxe Group, remarked, “The pandemic made people rethink their priorities. The value of having a stable and secure home environment became paramount. We have seen a significant increase in inquiries and sales as people look for long-term security.”
Similarly, Deepak Kapoor, Director of Gulshan Group, observed, “Flexibility was a major driver for renting. However, the uncertainty brought by the pandemic has shifted consumer preferences back towards owning homes. There’s a renewed sense of investment in one’s future, which is driving the market.”
Rajjath Goel, Managing Director of MRG Group, provided further insight, “The Uberisation trend, while significant for a time, was always limited by the inherent desire for ownership, particularly in a country like India. The post-COVID era has underscored the importance of owning a home, not just as an asset but as a fundamental part of one’s life and security.”
The trend is also corroborated by Ankush Kaul, Chief Business Officer of Ambience Group, who stated, “We’ve seen a clear shift in the market dynamics. The demand for quality housing has surged, and consumers are more inclined towards reputed builders who can deliver on their promises. The Uberisation trend was never a permanent shift but a response to economic and social conditions at the time.”
According to market reports, the housing market in India has seen a sharp revival post-COVID. Sales reached an all-time high last year, with prices increasing by an average of 10 percent annually across eight major cities. In certain micro-markets, prices surged by 40-70 percent over the past two years. This growth is driven by end-user demand and a shift towards reputed builders with a proven track record.
Anshul Jain of Cushman & Wakefield notes that while there has been a steep rise in prices post-COVID, the market is expected to stabilize with nominal growth in the coming years. “We are near the peak of the market right now. The prices have risen sharply, but going forward, we can expect more stability and nominal growth driven by normal market parameters like inflation and steady demand,” he explained.
In conclusion, the residential sector is experiencing a decline in the “Uberisation” trend as the desire for homeownership resurges. The COVID pandemic has been pivotal in reshaping consumer priorities, emphasizing the security and stability of owning a home. As the market stabilizes, the focus remains on delivering quality housing to meet growing demand, reaffirming the enduring value of homeownership in India.

For the Future of Indian Girls, Leading Singers Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan Sing India’s Own Period Song, in Partnership with Whisper
1st July 2024 Mumbai, Maharashtra, India Whisper, India’s leading feminine-care brand from Procter & Gamble, has created history by launching the nation’s own Period Song, with India’s biggest voices – Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan. Both the musicians created their own versions of the ‘Period Song, launching it on World Menstrual Hygiene Day. Whisper has provided period education to over 100 million girls and women till date and are shining the spotlight on the early onset of menstruation among young girls in the fifth edition of its popular Keep Girls in School movement. Through this catchy tune with very relevant, educative lyrics for young minds, the intent is to get every Indian to sing it and believe that periods is a sign of being healthy.
Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan created their own version of the period song, through which they taught schoolchildren about menstruation, who later joined them by singing along and dancing to the tune.
“I am so excited to sing India’s own period song, which I hope, will reach every citizen of India and empower young girls to live their lives confidently and without fear – both in school and outside of it. It is shocking that girls are getting periods as early as the age of 8 which makes it even more critical for Whisper’s period song to break societal taboos by educating girls early on and preventing school dropouts. The song is so catchy and joyful that it plays in my mind throughout the day, and I can’t resist humming it. It is a great way to tell all boys and girls that – Periods ka matlab healthy hai aap. It is a song that India truly needed and I’m proud to be associated with it,” said Sunidhi Chauhan.
Whisper Presents The Period Song Ft. Sunidhi Chauhan
“I am honored to lend my voice for Whisper’s period song. It’s so important to educate young children about periods so that they are prepared and there is no fear. Our effort is to let young girls know that getting their periods irrespective of their age means that they are healthy. Girls are getting their periods as early as the age of 8, and this puts about 26 million girls in India at the risk of dropping out of school without proper period education and products. Kudos to Whisper to taking the initiative and normalising periods by teaching young children about it. I was so happy to create the song in different languages, so it can truly become the song of the nation,” said singer Shreya Ghoshal.
Studies show that one in five girls have been at the risk of dropping out of school due to lack of period education and products*. With girls starting periods at as early as the age of 8 years, this could escalate further. Without period awareness, 26 million girls could be at risk of dropping out of school. Whisper’s Keep Girls in School program has been working on normalising periods and providing girls with the right education and period products, so that they don’t have to compromise on their future and can continue staying in school. To date Whisper has taught over 100 million girls and women about periods and distributed sanitary pads. Every year, they go to over 50,000 schools to conduct period education sessions.
Shreya Ghoshal sang the mukhda, or “face of the song,” Periods Ka Matlab Healthy Hai aap in eight different languages including Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, and many others: truly making it the song of the Nation on periods.
The song was originally composed and directed by music director Aman Pant, and via clever use of music, Whisper has given a wonderful tool to society, to educate young girls and boys about periods. With the biggest voices in the country picking this momentum, it can really help break taboos and normalize periods as a sign of being a strong and healthy girl.

Sri Ramakrishna Hospital’s Pulmonologists Dispel COVID Vaccine Fears and Highlights the Triggers of Asthma
1st July 2024 Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India In response to the growing concerns surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine, the esteemed pulmonology team at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital has taken proactive steps to address and alleviate public fears. The experts also aim to educate the community on crucial triggers for asthma and other respiratory conditions, emphasizing both indoor and outdoor factors.
Every year World Asthma Day is celebrated on the second Tuesday of May. This year it was celebrated on 7th May, 2024. This day is dedicated to throwing light on the issues concerning asthma and lung health that are generally compromised due to several internal and external factors. While aiming to raise awareness and provide insights, the expert pulmonologists at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital also addressed the fears related to the COVID-19 vaccine that has been on the rise lately.
In recent days, we have been hearing several theories and misconceptions about the Covid vaccine causing hesitancy in people. This widespread news has created a lot of tension and confusion.
Vaccines are often known to prevent a person from getting infected by a certain organism like a virus or bacteria. But unfortunately, when the person gets infected the severity can be reduced. This was evident in the case of COVID-19, especially during the second phase when most of the vaccinated people did not experience any major symptoms or complications when compared to people who have not been vaccinated.
It is important to understand that every vaccine has its pros and cons. COVID-19 vaccine was developed by research within a short period and was able to deliver remarkable results in several individuals while few people have faced few complications. In case there are any concerns regarding the vaccine or one’s health related to it, choose to talk to an experienced specialist to seek professional advice on the concerns.
Similarly one of the common concerns in recent days is asthma. People often ignore the triggers of asthma that might cause flare ups. The asthma triggers can be both indoor and outdoor.
Asthma is a chronic life condition that affects several people worldwide. It requires prompt medical treatment to be managed effectively without any issues.
When it comes to indoor triggers the factors can include:
- Pet fur: Most of us have pets and pet fur can trigger asthma.
- Smoke from incense sticks: Though this may not be a trigger in all asthma patients most of them may have flare ups once the smoke is inhaled.
- Burning mosquito coils: Certain chemicals found in the coils can be the reason for asthma flares.
- Air quality inside the home: At times air quality index inside the homes is affected by several factors leading to an asthma trigger.
- Cigarette smoke: Cigarette smoke has several chemical components that are extremely dangerous for asthma patients and is known to cause major flare ups.
- House dust mites
- Cockroaches
When it comes to outdoor triggers it can include:
- Air pollution & Air quality: Industrial cities often experience poor outdoor air quality due to hazardous smoke emitted from industries, vehicles, and others which can affect the air quality leading to asthma triggers.
- Pollen grains
- Dust: Dust due to construction and other outdoor activities are known to contribute to asthma flare-ups.
Although both indoor and outdoor factors trigger asthma and also other serious lung conditions like COPD, ILD, outdoor triggers are beyond control and cannot be avoided in many circumstances, while indoor triggers can be highly controlled and avoided. While being outdoors it is important to follow certain steps like using a mask or avoiding traveling through highly polluted areas to avoid asthma flare ups
The Department of Pulmonology at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital is committed to provide exceptional care for respiratory disorders, while offering advanced diagnostic procedures, personalized treatment plans, and continuous patient education to manage and prevent respiratory issues effectively.
Asthma is a growing concern in the world. With certain efforts and precautionary steps one can always manage asthma effectively.
