On the road to climate-neutral mobility
Protecting the climate is one of the greatest challenges of our time. One of the main sources of greenhouse gases in particular – transportation – is in urgent need of a climate-friendly transformation. At the Mobility Day North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) on December 18 in Essen, experts from politics, business, and society spoke and discussed the current situation and possibilities for the rapid implementation of climate-neutral mobility in Germany’s most populous federal state.
Covestro is already making an important contribution to more sustainable vehicles and infrastructure with innovative material solutions. In this context, the company is also working in close partnership with Team Sonnenwagen, a team of around 50 students from RWTH Aachen University and Aachen University of Applied Sciences. It is dedicated to developing racing cars that are powered solely by the sun. Covestro shares the students’ enthusiasm because the racing cars, with their high efficiency and use of new technologies and materials, are a powerful symbol of the mobility of the future. That is why Covestro is supporting the team as the main sponsor with material solutions and technical exchange for another two years.
“In order to create a climate-neutral and circular mobility of the future, business, politics, and society must pull together. At Covestro, we are contributing to this transformation by offering the automotive industry raw materials based on biomass or recyclates and manufacturing our products as energy-efficiently and with as few emissions as possible,” said Dr. Thorsten Dreier, Chief Technology Officer, during the discussion. “At Covestro, we want our production to be climate-neutral by 2035 and are relying on energy from renewable sources and innovative process technologies to achieve this.”
Covestro’s material developments focus on solutions for the major trends of electromobility, autonomous driving, and the need for individualization. These include material solutions for compact, powerful, and safe batteries for electric cars and robust charging systems, plastics for connected mobility and the Internet of Things, as well as various products for aesthetic and functional automotive interiors and exteriors.
Covestro has been supporting Team Sonnenwagen in the development of ever more efficient solar racing cars since 2017. The students are working together in a wide range of disciplines to improve the aerodynamics, optimize the chassis, and install a particularly efficient photovoltaic system and battery. Participants at the NRW Mobility Day were able to take a look at the Covestro Photon, the predecessor model to the current Adelie racing car, and talk to team members. With the Photon, Team Sonnenwagen became the European champion at the European solar race in Zolder, Belgium, in September 2022.

Art & Soul Exhibition
In its most basic form, art is an expression that defies understanding. It is a synthesis of passion and inventiveness that leads to divinity. Divine Art has come up with a notable collection of modern and contemporary Indian art from both private and renowned artists’ studios. A tasteful blend of established, mid-career, and up-and-coming artists, the pieces have been carefully chosen, and all of the included pieces share a similar level of complexity and elegance. The Art and Soul exhibition, as the title implies, will showcase artists inspired by their personal interpretation of what defines the soulful artistic expression. There are artists in this exhibition who have paved the path through time and wisdom, while others dazzle with their intricate detail work, well-balanced designs, and striking color schemes.

Among the modern Master Ashok Bhowmick and contemporary artists Bhaskar Rao, Chandra Morkondato, HR Das, Kandi Narsimlu, Ramesh Chandra, Vinod Sharma, Sakti Burman, Jitendra Dangi and Santosh Maravi, to mention a few. The more recent additions, Chanchal Ganguly and Umesh Kumar, regarded as familiar faces in the world of art will be the part of the show. A wide range of vibrant works that possess a multitude of styles and rely solely on the artist’s sense to produce high-quality work will be exhibited. Art is deemed to be endless, devoid of themes, constraints, or categories.

According to Sumit P. Thakur, director of Divine Art Gallery, “Art and Soul is a creative experience that invites viewers to think beyond the obvious and challenges customary conventions.” A variety of artistic mediums are on display at this show, such as paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works. To provide visitors with a variety of options, I have also attempted to include works created in a variety of media, such as pen and ink, oil, acrylic, and mixed-media tribal art. The artists, who were displaying their works, devoted themselves to the creation of an exciting and visually striking experience for all visitors. It encourages all to explore the unexplored area of imagination, questioning preconceptions and discovering new dimensions in art.”

GreenCell Mobility Becomes the First Industry Player to Revolutionize EV Transport with Renewable Energy Alliance
NueGo buses will now be powered by 1MW Wind Solar Hybrid Plant
Hyderabad –19 November 2023: GreenCell Mobility, a pioneering force in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, is thrilled to announce a landmark achievement in sustainable transportation. Through its subsidiary, GreenCell Express, which operates the “NueGo” brand of inter-city electric buses, the company has inked a significant power purchase agreement and made a strategic equity investment in a 1 MW Wind Solar Hybrid captive power plant (with annual generation capacity of 4.6 million units) situated in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh. This groundbreaking initiative marks an industry-first, as it will see its inter-city electric buses in the state being powered predominantly by renewable energy, leading to incremental CO2 savings of ~38 thousand tons over lifetime of buses.

This bold step by GreenCell Mobility is not just a testament to its commitment to sustainability but also a giant leap towards the future of green transportation. The initiative is expected to fulfil majority of the power requirements for these electric buses from renewable energy sources, thereby substantially reducing reliance on grid power. This aligns seamlessly with GreenCell’s long-term goal of becoming a Net Zero company.
Devndra Chawla, CEO & MD of GreenCell Mobility, expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative: “At GreenCell Mobility, we are not just about embracing the future; we are about creating it. This initiative of powering our EVs through renewable energy sources in Madhya Pradesh is more than an innovation; it’s a commitment to our planet and our future generations. We are setting a precedent in the industry, demonstrating that sustainable practices can go hand-in-hand with business growth.”
In line with this vision, GreenCell Mobility is actively pursuing similar agreements in other states where it operates. The company’s goal is to transition completely from grid power to renewable energy (RE) sources. Additionally, GreenCell is exploring the deployment of Battery Energy Storage solutions to ensure that its operations are end-to-end green. GreenCell is actively working with both central and state stakeholders to facilitate policy changes to increasing adoption of RE power for e-Buses.
This initiative by GreenCell Mobility is poised to revolutionize the EV industry and set new standards in sustainable practices, reinforcing the company’s position as a leader in green mobility solutions.

Defining development Impact to measure better and report better

By: Lokesh Gujjarappa, Specialist, M&E and Process Excellence, United Way Bengaluru
Thanks to the Corporate Social Responsibility law in India in 2013, many of the social development sector terminologies started to get space on the front page of the national dailies and in the board rooms of many corporates. Increasingly it is realized that for a long-term commitment to society and the environment, profit along with purpose is the new mantra.
With the entry of the corporate world into social development also came the two E’s, efficiency, and effectiveness. What it means is that with CSR donations came in the measurement part! also followed is the timeline of execution. The NGO projects that were considered ‘unorganized’ till now started to get organized and each step was measured with data as evidence whether activity or the finances.
Not-for-profit organizations (also called as Implementing Agency in CSR parlance) and social development professionals have been working in this sector for many decades and are well versed with social / community development project definitions, processes, implementation strategies, and evaluation methodologies. With the CSR advent, development professionals started hearing many HR/communication / IT professionals who are ‘managing’ the CSR spends of the corporate also using the terminologies such as outputs, outcomes, impact, sustainability, and lately ESG etc.
The question is do these new breed of development professionals who do not have a ‘rooting’ in social work/development projects use these terminologies in the right context and with the correct meaning? A keyword search and review of the annual reports of the CSR donors hardly says so.
The most spoken/used word in this sector is ‘Impact’. In most instances, the word Impact is used to denote the number of stakeholders (or beneficiaries) reached through project activities rather than on how the project activities have effected change in the lives of the stakeholders (or beneficiaries). Even the impact assessment studies also report the same! Oxford Learner Dictionary defines Impact as, “the powerful effect that something has on somebody/something”.
So, how can we bring this change?
Let us first start talking about project implementation design and not about fund utilization, which anyway will happen if the project implementation design is prepared and implemented well with due consideration to the risks and possible mitigation strategies. Let us start talking about the log frame matrix, let us define the activities to be implemented in the project, the results or outputs that each of the activities will lead to, and on consistently doing these activities and getting results, the outcomes that we will achieve over a long run. A log frame matrix is a blueprint of any project implementation that defines these terms operationally before the initiation of the project. Thus, helps in tangibly measuring it.
Let us use the terms activities, output, and outcome more than the word Impact! Let us focus more on project activity monitoring than impact assessment. Rest assured that activity implemented in a time-bound and measurable way will produce desired outcomes and impact in the lives of the beneficiaries.
