34-Year-Old With Severe Liver And Lung Injuries Successfully Saved Without Surgery At Zynova Shalby Hospital

Mumbai : In a gut-wrenching incident, Dr Hemant Patel and his team at Zynova Shalby Multi-Speciality Hospital, Mumbai successfully rescued a 34-year-old man who had sustained serious liver and lung injuries in a ghastly road accident. The patient arrived at the emergency department experiencing intense abdominal pain, chest discomfort on the right side, difficulty breathing, blood poisoning, and acute kidney failure. Through conservative treatment, he was salvaged and discharged from the hospital after receiving timely medical attention for 12 days.

Prashant Kadam a resident in Ghatkoper. He is working in a private company. On April 15, while going to office, he met with a bike accident around 9.30 AM. His liver was seriously injured in this accident. Bleeding inside the body had also reached the lungs. In such a situation, the local residents admitted him to a nearby hospital. After first aid treatment here, doctors advised to shift him to Zynova Shalby Hospital. Dr Hemant Patel (General & Leproscopic Surgeon) started treatment on him. After medical examination, the patient was found to have injuries to his liver and lungs. In such a situation, Doctors have saved the patient’s liver without surgery.

Dr Hemant Patel, General & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Zynova Shalby Multi-Specialisty Hospital Mumbai said, “Patient camt to emergencey department few hours after the accident in a desaturated condition with severe abdominal pain, right sides chest pain & dyspnea. After CT Scan & MRI Report, he was found to be in septicemia with acute renal failure with cst scans suggestive of multiple hepatic lacerations with contusions involving 50-75% of right hepatic lobe (AAST liver injury scale grade IV) with hemoperitoneum and right haemothorax with jaundice. Patient was manages Conservatively with nasel oxygen, intravenous antibiotics, intravenous fluids, Nephro protective and hepato protective medications. Haemothorax was drained after stablising the patient.

Dr Patel Added, ‘‘Case was very challenging in terms of if his bleeding did not stop or if he starts bleeding again from the liver than would have had to operate in emergency. And slight delay to take him for surgery would have been life threatening. So we all were on the toes for couple of days till he was fully stabilized.’’

“After 12 days of prompt intervention, the patient was discharged. The patient’s abdominal pain had completely stopped. Now this patient is doing all his daily activities as before. Patient is advised to do chest physio therapy at home for the lung rehabilitation on discharge. Patient is on regular follow up with me every 5-7 days with follow up blood reports and intrasound reports as liver injury takes time to heal. Not treating him on time would have been catastrophic including possible death” Concluded Dr Patel.

“The likelihood of my making it through the accident was slim. However, I thank the team of doctors who provided me with prompt treatment. I have got a second lease of life. I am forever indebted to the skilled team of doctors. I am eagerly waiting to resume work like before,” Concluded the Patient Prashant Kadam.

KIIT World School organized a workshop on mental health

Gurugram: KIIT World School in collaboration with Max Hospital, Gurugram organized a seminar on mental health. The main speaker of this seminar was Psychological Counsellor, Dr. Vishakha Bhalla who explained about stress management, anxiety, depression and how to treat it.

Psychological Counsellor, Dr.Vishakha Bhalla addressed the audience, highlighting the need for effective communication to reduce mental stress, particularly among youngsters. She highlighted how an inability to meet prescribed requirements, along with a lack of understanding from parents and teachers, can lead to increased stress among youngsters. And she also provided practical stress management strategies to both students and parents, providing answers for dealing with daily difficulties and hurdles.

Addressing the workshop, Neelima Kamrah, principal of KIIT World School, expressed gratitude for the initiative and praised the efforts of both teachers and students in organizing the seminar. She stressed the critical importance of total health, emphasizing that mental well-being is just as important as physical health. HCG Cancer Centre, Bangalore, Successfully Treats Appendix Cancer Patient with Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC

Bangalore, 10th May 2024: HCG Cancer Centre, Double Road, Bangalore recently set an exceptional benchmark in appendix cancer treatment by performing the unique Cytoreductive surgery with Hyperthermic Intra Peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) procedure on a 40-year-old man suffering from mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix. This type of cancer grows from the cells that make up the lining of the appendix.

While Cytoreductive surgery is the standard approach to reduce the number of cancer cells through the removal of the cancerous growth and involved organs in the abdomen, HIPEC is a procedure typically used to treat abdominal cancers that have spread beyond the originating organ to involve the peritoneal surface lining the abdomen. The combination of both procedures was brilliantly harnessed by Dr. Pampanagouda S K M – Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist along with a multidisciplinary team that accomplished the medical feat.

For over two months, Tejas S (name changed on request) a 40-year-old police department employee in the city suffered from abdominal pain. He either felt full soon after eating or had a bloated feeling. He would occasionally complain of nausea and vomiting. When he began to lose weight without any explanation, his seniors at work asked him to seek medical help. Upon a physical examination, his doctor suspected that his abdominal pain was due to tuberculosis and put him on anti-tubercular treatment.

When the symptoms exacerbated, his doctor conducted an appendectomy. However, when the symptoms persisted even after the surgery, his histopathology report revealed he was suffering from mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix. His family advised him not to lose time and to seek expert treatment at HCG Cancer Centre, Double Road.

At HCG Cancer Centre, Double Road, when Dr Pampanagouda studied his reports and found that despite the removal of the total appendix the tumor cells had spilled into Tejas’ peritoneal cavity, he and his team unanimously decided to perform the critical Cytoreductive surgery, followed by HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) procedure.

Explaining the expert treatment Dr. Pampanagouda S K M – Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist, HCG Cancer Centre, Double Road, Bangalore said, “When the patient arrived at the hospital, he had abdominal mass with distension of the abdomen. Patient had biopsy of the abdominal mass to reconfirm the diagnosis Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) and had staging investigation done. The imaging report revealed the cancer had spread to other part of the abdomen to involve the peritoneal surface and omentum. That was when our multidisciplinary team decided that Cytoreductive surgery followed by HIPEC was the effective treatment. In view of the extensive disease, he received Neo adjuvant Chemotherapy. The patient condition was optimised and underwent surgery under general with epidural anesthesia. His blood and other vital parameters were stringently monitored to keep him stabilized throughout the nine hour-long procedures. We removed the patient’s entire abdominal wall lining (peritoneum) and complete large bowel (colon), conducted anastomosis (rejoining the ends) of the intestines, and removed the deposits over the mesentery (fold of membrane that attaches the intestine to the wall around the stomach area), followed by HIPEC procedure involving circulation of Chemotherapeutic drug solution throughout the abdomen for one hour with temperature maintained at 42 degrees centigrade. In HIPEC procedure, the cancerous tumor cells are treated with heated chemotherapy drug solution applied directly inside the abdomen to eliminate the remaining cancerous cells without much systemic toxicity of the drug.”

The patient responded extremely well to the surgery and recovered smoothly without any major complications. He was discharged from the hospital on 11th day of major surgery.”

He further added, “HCG is a pioneer in oncological care in the country. We have been consistently performing major HIPEC surgeries which have been life-saving for patients like Tejas. All our patients undergo vital tests to ascertain their capacity to withstand the extensive surgical procedures. Hope in Motion: Doctors Successfully Perform India’s First Robotic CRS with HIPEC for Peritoneal Surface Cancer

Chennai, – May 9th, 2024 – In a major medical breakthrough, surgical oncologists at Apollo Cancer Centre (ACC) has successfully performed India’s first Robotic Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) for a peritoneal surface cancer. This minimally invasive, robotic-assisted approach marks a paradigm shift in treating Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP), an aggressive appendix cancer, offering patients with a new standard of care, enabling faster recovery and improved quality of life.

A female patient, aged 51, was diagnosed with bilateral ovarian masses, and had extensive surgical intervention, including the removal of the uterus, ovaries, appendix, and part of the omentum. Subsequent histopathological examination revealed a high-grade mucinous tumour of the appendix with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), necessitating additional surgery. The patient was found to have residual mucinous implants (gelatinous deposits that remain in the abdomen post-surgery for appendicular mucinous tumors) in the pelvis and around the cecum (first part of the colon).

Due to the peculiar tendency of the appendix cancer to spread to the lining of the patient’s abdomen (peritoneum), Dr Ajit Pai and team performed minimally invasive Robotic Cytoreductive Surgery (to reduce the amount of cancer cells in the abdominal cavity) with right hemicolectomy (removing the colon which bears the appendix) and complete mesocolic excision (surgery for treating cancer arising from the colon and appendix) and peritonectomy and total omentectomy, along with Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (heated chemotherapy with a chemo drug) eliminating any possible microscopic residual tumours inside the abdomen.

Traditionally, CRS/HIPEC has been performed as an open and an extensive operation, with a 10-12-inch incision associated with prolonged hospitalization. The Robotic CRS approach offers significant advantages as it is minimally invasive; the clinicians made use of tiny 8mm incisions for the robotic instruments, minimizing pain, blood loss, scarring and discomfort. Additionally, a single 5cm incision was used for tumour removal and the delivery of HIPEC. This novel approach translated to a faster recovery and a quicker return to normal life for the patient. At one year follow up, she remains in perfect health and cancer free.

Young Thalassemia Survivor meets German Lifesaver, Emotions Run High

Mumbai / Bangalore, May 09, 2024: In a heart-warming moment, 17-year-old Chirag, a thalassemia survivor from India, finally met the man who gave him a second chance at life – his stem cell donor, Roman Simnizki from Germany. Chirag battled thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder that significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. For most of his childhood, Chirag had to endure fatigue and other health complications along with regular blood transfusions.

For ten years, his family tirelessly searched for an unrelated donor. Their efforts finally yielded results in 2016 when a perfect match was found – Roman, a 29-year-old from Münsingen, Germany, through the DKMS database.

“Meeting Roman was an overwhelming experience,” shared Chirag. “Words cannot express how thankful I am for his selfless act. He didn’t just donate stem cells; he gave me a future.”

Roman, who travelled to India to meet Chirag, echoed the sentiment. “There’s no greater joy than knowing you’ve helped someone in need. Seeing Chirag healthy and full of life is the biggest reward.”

The emotional meeting, filled with gratitude and joy, marked the culmination of a life-changing journey for Chirag and Roman. Chirag, now free from the limitations of thalassemia, can dream of a bright future. Roman’s act of altruism, a simple cheek swab, and later blood stem cell donation, has demonstrably changed a life across continents. Chirag’s parents, who witnessed their son’s struggle and eventual recovery, expressed their heartfelt appreciation to Roman for his selfless act.

Chirag’s treating physician, Dr Revathi Raj, Paediatric Haematologist, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, said, “There is a significant burden of Thalassemia in our country, as more than 10,000 children are born with the disease every year. Beta-thalassemia major is a severe form of the disease that requires regular blood transfusions and, potentially, a stem cell transplant for a cure. I am happy that today Chirag is recovered and a bright future awaits him. I hope more people like Roman register as potential stem cell donors so more patients can undergo lifesaving stem cell transplants.”

In a stem cell transplantation, healthy blood stem cells from a matching donor are infused into the patient to help resume healthy blood production. The best stem cell transplant outcomes happen when a patient’s human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and the HLA of a potential donor. This is much more complex than matching blood groups. About 30% of patients find an HLA-matched donor within the family; however, the rest, 70 % of the patients, have to look for an “unrelated” donor with matched HLA.

Talking about the DKMS-BMST Thalassemia program, Patrick Paul, CEO of DKMS-BMST, said, “To support Thalassemia patients in India, we have launched the DKMS-BMST Thalassemia program. Under this program, DKMS-BMST collaborates with local NGOs and transplantation clinics to organise camps where pediatric thalassemia patients and their families travel from far places, sometimes from very remote places in India, to give buccal swab samples for HLA typing. Samples from the camps are analysed in the DKMS laboratory based out of Germany and clinical matching reports of the same are provided. In cases where there is no HLA match sibling for a sick child, we also support unrelated donor searches for patients.”

The availability of matching blood stem cell donors remains a significant challenge for Indian patients in need of life-saving transplants. India has a young population, so it is crucial to encourage more people to register as stem cell donors. Their continued participation in the registry significantly improves the chances of locating matching donors for patients requiring assistance,” said the spokesperson at the event, Dr. Sunil Bhat, Director & Clinical Lead, Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Blood & Marrow Transplantation, Narayana Health.

To register as a potential stem cell donor, you must be a healthy Indian adult between 18 and 55. When you are ready to register, all you need to do is complete a consent form and swab the inside of your cheeks to collect your tissue cells. Your tissue sample is then sent to the lab to be analyzed for your HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) and listed anonymously on the international search platform for matching stem cell donors.

Rotary Midtown spreads awareness on Cancer; organises road show along Mangalore route

In a bid to tackle the formidable challenge of cancer, Rotary Bangalore Midtown, in collaboration with Rotary District 3191, has embarked on a journey on 19th and 20th April 2024 aimed at spreading awareness and promoting Rotary’s Answer to Cancer Enigma (RACE) program. This initiative, known as the RACE Road Show, seeks to engage with communities and Rotary clubs along the route to Mangalore and back, with the shared goal of combatting cancer through early detection and prevention.

Cancer remains one of the most pressing health concerns globally, affecting millions of lives each year. Over the course of the journey, members from Rotary Bangalore Midtown and District 3191 will visit approximately 20 Rotary clubs in Ramanagara, Channapatna, Mandya, Mysore and Hassan engaging with fellow Rotarians, community leaders, and the public at large.

IADVL’s Dermatological Disease Awareness Campaign received 9419 pledges

New Delhi, 8th May 2024 – India’s largest organization of dermatologists, the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists, and Leprologists (IADVL), marked a significant milestone by achieving the Guinness World Records title for “MOST PLEDGES IN 24 HOURS TO RAISE DERMATOLOGICAL DISEASE AWARENESS”. The most pledges received in 24 hours were 9,419, and were achieved by IADVL members, online, on 5th-6th May 2024. The objective of this event was to bring together 17,000 doctors from across India, who came together online to lend their support for spreading social awareness about dermatological diseases. Through this awareness campaign, the organization aimed to shed light on the complexities of dermatological conditions and the critical role of qualified professionals in their diagnosis and treatment.

Over the past few decades, the proliferation of such practices has surged, leading to detrimental and unrecognized outcomes in various medical procedures, particularly in dermatological and cosmetology procedures. To gear up for the Guinness World Record attempt, IADVL meticulously laid out preparations, including a dedicated website crafted to streamline the pledging process for IADVL members, engagement of the Digital Forensics Team to audit online pledges meticulously, and submission of proofs and documentation to solidify their integrity and pursuit, all approved by the Guinness World Record standards.
