Bry-Air inaugurates check dam at Alwar as part of its CSR activity

National 5th September 2024: Bry-Air, a flagship company under the Pahwa Group, inaugurated a check dam at Bala Dehra village, Alwar as part of its CSR activity. The CSR project is part of the 60-year celebration of Bry-Air.

Alwar, being a semi-arid region, is continuously faced by the problem of the water crisis. Owing to this, the people of the place are highly dependent on the monsoon for farming activities. Considering that Bala Dehra village is situated at the foothills of the Aravalli Range in Alwar, the water problem is exacerbated, where people find it difficult to carry on the farming processes due to shortage of water and brief monsoon season ranging from June to August.

The construction of the check dam will benefit more than 2500 people in the region. Facilitating replenishment of nearby groundwater reserves and wells, the check dam will help in the cultivation of crops such as wheat, barley, and mustard over 50 (ha) agricultural land. In the process, it also comes with the capacity to recharge 10 open wells and 80 bore wells in the village.

Coming with the ability to capture and save rainwater, the check dams will contribute to recharging the groundwater level and increasing the availability of water, which will be a big boon for farmers. The entire project has been implemented in collaboration with Sapna NGO which saw the proactive involvement of the gram panchayat, including the villagers who were constantly part of the identification of the site for the construction of the check dam.

Mr. Deepak Pahwa, CMD, Bry-Air and Mrs. Vinita Pahwa, Director Bry-Air inaugurated the check dam as the chief guests of the program. The occasion was also graced by the presence of Mrs Anandita Pahwa, Head-CSR Initiative, Pahwa Group, Mr Sudhir Pratap Singh, General Secretary, Sapna NGO, Mrs. Krishna Sarpanch of Bala Dehra village and villagers of Bala Dehra village, Alwar.

Speaking on the occasion, Deepak Pahwa – Chairman, Pahwa Group & Managing Director, Bry-Air, said, “The construction of the check dam showcases our dedication to drive societal upliftment as a responsible organization. Fostering regional development, the project aims to improve the quality of life in the beneficiary communities. The dam being the 5th check dam is part of Bry-Air’s continuous initiative that focusses on enhancing surface and underground water availability to boost agricultural productivity. By providing a more consistent source of water supply, the dam will facilitate the replenishment of groundwater reservoirs and wells. At the same time, by supplying water for agricultural and domestic use, it will offer a sustainable livelihood option where it will play a pivotal role in retaining the younger generation in farming over the years.”

The construction of the check dam can be considered a remarkable step towards addressing the perennial issue of water scarcity in the region. By harnessing the benefits of water conservation, the project will promote effective management of rainwater and ensure reliable water supply for agricultural needs and daily activities at the same time.

Over 100 visually-impaired children relive ‘Olympics’ to inspire greater number of eye pledges and donations

Bengaluru, 2024: In its endeavor to create widespread awareness on the importance of eye donation fortnight and encourage greater number of pledges and actual eye donations, Sankara Eye Hospital, in association with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organized sports event ‘Sankara Eye Olympics’ for around 100 visually challenged children between the age group of 12 to 18 at United Football Club, Halasuru. The highlight of the event was the participation of visually impaired in Relay, Cricket, Football and Kabbadi. Every year in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of eye donation, Eye Donation Fortnight is observed in the country from August 25, 2024 to September 08, 2024.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) for Bengaluru Shri. M N Anuchet – IPS and Mr. Anil Aldrin, Former Olympian and Indian Hockey Captain inaugurated the event with celebratory kick off. This initiative aims to educate society about eye donation and its life-changing impact while honoring the families of eye donors and the hospitals that support this noble cause.

At the Inaugural ceremony, Shri. M N Anuchet – IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) said, “I am honored to be invited as the chief guest for this eye donation fortnight sports event. The Eye Donation Fortnight by Sankara Eye Hospital featured a variety of activities, including skits, mimes, street plays and seminars designed to create awareness about eye donation. The Hospital has been organizing outreach programs and corporate programs and has been conducting Reels competitions and various other activities for broader reach. A felicitation program was organized to honor the families of eye donors and recognize the contributions of hospitals involved in the eye donation drive.

Dr. Pallavi Joshi, Consultant, Cornea, Occular Surface, and Refractive Surgery, Sankara Eye Hospital, Bengaluru said, “Last year, the total amount of pledges we collected at our hospital was around 700. This year, we wish to increase this number by 10 to 15 %, reflecting our commitment to bridging the gap between the supply and demand for corneal transplants. We are receiving 160 to 180 eyes annually, highlighting the need for increased awareness and participation during this crucial fortnight. Around 100 individuals at our hospital alone remain on the waiting list due to a shortage of available corneas and this includes children as young as 6 years to elders around 80 years. The disparity between the need and availability is alarming which can be bridged only with wide-spread awareness on eye donation. The initiative begins with kith and kin which makes a huge difference. As of today, close to 5000 corneal transplants have been successfully performed at our hospital.”

Adventure (WR): Youngest in the world to complete the Ocean’s Seven Challenge

Prabhat Koli (b. 27 July 1999) from Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, became the youngest person in the world, at the age of 23, to complete the Ocean’s Seven Challenge on 1 March 2023. He completed the challenge in 8 hrs 41 mins, crossing the Cook Strait between New Zealand’s North and South Islands amid bad weather. He is also the recipient of the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award (2018).

NCPA and Soho Theatre Announce Exciting Collaboration to Co-present ‘The Gentlemen’s Club’

03rd September 2024 – Mumbai, India – The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and London’s Soho Theatre are thrilled to co-present Patchwork Ensemble’s reprised version of their hit show – The Gentlemen’s Club to audiences across two continents. This partnership marks a significant milestone in international theatre, highlighting the dynamic exchange between two of the leading art centres from India and the UK. The Gentlemen’s Club, which presented at the NCPA in 2015 as a part of the Centrestage Festival, will be set for its much-awaited second run from the 27th and the 28th of September in the Experimental Theatre. Following its run in India, the production will make its way to London, where it will be showcased at Soho Theatre, marking its international debut.

The show invites the audiences to enter Mumbai’s pulsating underground club scene and follow the exhilarating lives of the city’s drag kings, headlined by the enigmatic Rocky, also known as Shammsher. Rocky’s act is a tribute to the legendary Shammi Kapoor and the golden era of Hindi cinema. Alongside Rocky, a diverse ensemble of women embraces the art of drag, delivering a cabaret-style performance that transports you to a gritty, hidden world where you can be anyone you desire. Featuring a dazzling mix of dance, music, and projection, this show unfolds an exciting and provocative narrative celebrating artistes and their exploration of masculinity.
