MAHE Welcomes Third Biotherapeutics Batch with Orientation Program
Manipal, August 3, 2024 – The Manipal Centre for Biotherapeutics Research (MCBR) at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) launched its three-day orientation program for the third batch of M.Sc. (by Research) in Biotherapeutics students. This program is part of the first-of-its-kind biotherapeutics course in India.
Lt Gen (Dr.) M.D. Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, Manipal, officially inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp. In his address, he congratulated the students for selecting a pioneering course that will equip them with essential skills to develop therapeutic products, thus contributing to improved healthcare management.
The course has attracted about 15 students from diverse regions across India. It offers a robust four-semester (two-year) curriculum that combines theoretical and practical training in the first semester, followed by mini research projects in the second semester, and culminates in a major industry or academic internship project during the third and fourth semesters.
Prof. (Dr.) Raviraja N. Seetharam, Coordinator of MCBR, welcomed attendees and provided a brief overview of the program. MCBR is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and an internationally trained faculty to guide students. The center has also established collaborations with 20 industry partners, enhancing training and placement opportunities for students.
Dr. S.V. Kirthanashri, Associate Professor and Co-coordinator, introduced the chief guest, while Dr. Raghavendra Upadhya, Assistant Professor and Course Coordinator, offered the vote of thanks. The inauguration was followed by a series of talks and facility tours designed to inspire and orient the new students. Ms. Abigail Rego, Dr. TMA Pai Research Scholar, served as the event’s anchor.
The orientation program marks the beginning of an exciting academic journey for the students, who are poised to make significant contributions to the field of biotherapeutics. Prasanna School of Public Health, Manipal Welcomes New Batch on Orientation Day 2024
Manipal, August 3, 2024 – Prasanna School of Public Health (PSPH), a constituent unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), held its Orientation Day 2024 at the TMA Pai Hall, KMC Administration Block, to warmly welcome the fresh batch of students embarking on their journey in public health education. The event saw an inspiring lineup of speakers and a structured programme aimed at setting a positive tone for the new academic year.
The Orientation Day began with a warm Welcome Address by Dr. Asha Kamath, Associate Director of PSPH, followed by the traditional Lighting of the Lamp, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment. Dr. Cherian Varghese, Professor and Director of PSPH, introduced the event with a speech that emphasized the importance of sustaining an enabling environment and outlined the skills and competencies crucial for a successful public health career. Shri Prasanna encouraged students to develop a confident attitude, embrace diverse subjects, define problems accurately, cultivate a problem-solving mindset, and build meaningful relationships.
In his Presidential Address, Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M. D. Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, underscored the importance of problem-solving, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration. He emphasized the key verticals of excellence in education, exemplary research, internationalization, sustainability, and alumni engagement. Highlighting the integral role of research, He advocated for a proactive rather than reactive stance in addressing the enormity of public health problems. He remarked, “Excellence is achieved by consistently performing, and PSPH stands by this principle.” Additionally, he shared his perspective on the quantum of education, stating, “25% of education is derived through teachers, 25% from one’s own willingness, 25% from peers, and the rest as a lifelong learner.”

Power demand in India is estimated to have risen ~7.0% on-year in July 2024 to ~150 billion units (BUs) owing to higher power demand in rain-deficient northern states.
However, minus the ~16% on-year surge in power demand in the north, demand moderated in other regions. Power demand rose ~4.0% in the southern region and declined a marginal ~1.0% in the western region. The sharp rise in demand in the northern region was primarily because of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
The variance in demand in the north vs the other regions can be explained largely by the spatial distribution of the monsoon. In July, rainfall in Maharashtra and Gujarat was 63% and 45% higher than normal, respectively. Ditto Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh — rainfall in these states was 60%, 33% and 28% above normal, respectively. In contrast, Punjab and Haryana received deficient rainfall of 44% and 41%, respectively, which is likely to have led to higher power demand for irrigation as these are key agriculture states.
