CEE to Host Webinar on CRISPR

McLean, VA, July 22, 2024 — The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), advisor to the Congressional STEM Education Caucus, will host an exciting webinar discussion, “Conversation with Dr. Feng Zhang,” focused on the future of CRISPR and its increased uses, including participant Q & A on Tuesday, July 23 between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. EST via Zoom.

Guest Speaker:

Feng Zhang, Ph.D. is a core institute member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, as well as an investigator at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT, co-director of the K. Lisa Yang and Hock E. Tan Center for Molecular Therapeutics at MIT, the James and Patricia Poitras Professor of Neuroscience at MIT, and a professor at MIT, with joint appointments in the departments of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Biological Engineering. Zhang is also an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Zhang is a molecular biologist seeking to improve human health by discovering approaches to modulate cellular programs, including returning diseased, stressed, or aged cells to a more healthful state. He is a recipient of many awards including the Lemelson-MIT Prize, the Tang Prize, the Canada Gairdner International Award, and the Merkin Institute Fellowship at the Broad. Zhang is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Zhang received his A.B. in chemistry and physics from Harvard College and his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University. He is a 1999 alum of CEE’s Research Science Institute and serves as a CEE Trustee.

Moderator:

David Cheng is CTO of Arbor Biotechnologies. He brings over 15 years of experience in technology and computer science to Arbor. He co-developed the Arbor computational discovery platform and is a leading contributor to the discovery of Arbor’s CRISPR nucleases and CRISPR-associated transposases. From 2019 through April 2021, David led Arbor as CEO. Prior to Arbor, David developed market-leading quantitative, automated trading strategies at JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs. Previously, David worked on parallel computing and information retrieval algorithms, and was an inventor of “autocomplete” predictions. David was also a member of the 4-person team that represented the United States at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). David received his M.Eng. and B.S. in Computer Science from MIT. He is also a 1999 alum of CEE’s Research Science Institute.

This online seminar is comprised of 45 minutes of panel discussion followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Through its network of research scientists and world-class presenters, CEE offers this program as part of a series to articulate recent advances in technology while also meaningfully addressing core challenges for public policymakers, ethicists, computer scientists, software engineers, technologists, entrepreneurs, investors, and business executives.

IYDF India and Redeem Industry Lead Heartwarming Aid Event for Hanamkonda HOPE Children’s Home

Monday, July 22,Hanamkonda, Telangana, India : On July 19, 2024, in Hanamkonda, Telangana, Mr. Arun Kumar Pasuladi, CEO of Redeem Industry, spearheaded a heartfelt humanitarian aid event. Accompanied by six dedicated volunteers, Mr. Pasuladi visited the HOPE Children’s Home in Hanamkonda, delivering vital necessities to the children in need.

Neal McDonough to Host the 2024 Young Artist Academy Awards

Marucci Sports Hosts the 8th Annual Marucci World Series

Baton Rouge, LA, July 20, 2024 — Marucci Sports will host 149 teams in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the 8th Annual Marucci World Series, July 21 – 26, 2024. The invite-only youth baseball tournament features 14U through 17U Marucci Franchise Club organizations, showcasing some of the best amateur baseball in the country.

These participating teams are an alliance of elite travel baseball organizations in long-term partnerships with Marucci that are committed to excellence on-and-off the field, have positive reputations of service in their communities, and align with the brands’ core values.

The Opening Ceremony commences at 5 p.m. and will feature a Home Run Derby, Fastest Man Competition and Catcher’s Gear Scramble. This event is open to the public, free to attend and fun for the entire family.

Tournament Play
Tournament play will commence Monday, July 22, and continue through Friday, July 26, with the semi-finals and championship games played on Friday at Southeastern Louisiana University, University High School, Dutchtown High School and Live Oak High School. All games are open to the public and free to attend.

The Marucci World Series athletes will compete on the best fields in Baton Rouge and the surrounding area. College stadiums hosting games include Southern University and Southeastern Louisiana University, while high school venues include Brusly High School, Catholic High School, Central High School, Denham Springs High School, Donaldsonville High School, Dunham, Dutchtown High School, Fontainebleau High School, French Settlement High School, Live Oak High School, Oak Villa, Parkview Baptist School, Plaquemine High School, Springfield High School, St. Amant High School, Traction, University High School, West Feliciana Sports Park, Woodlawn High School and Zachary Sports Complex.

Sarah A. Burlee Selected as Woman of the Month for June 2024 by P.O.W.E.R.

Hope Mills, NC, July 19, 2024 –Sarah A. Burlee of Hope Mills, North Carolina, has been selected as Woman of the Month for June 2024 by P.O.W.E.R. (Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized) for her outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of medical planning and government.

About Sarah A. Burlee
Sarah A. Burlee is a medical planner with over 20 years of experience in medical operations, planning, and training. She enlisted in the Army in 2003 as a 68W (Medic) and was later certified as an emergency medical technician (a qualification she still holds 20 years later) before being selected by her command to attend officer candidate school in 2007.

In addition to her work as a medical planner, Sarah is also an executive coach, Red Team member, group fitness instructor, and Girl Scout troop leader. She is currently transitioning from the military and looks forward to her next challenge in the civilian sector.

Sarah attended Claremont Mudd Scripps University where she earned honors as a two-time All-American in Track and Field and graduated in 2002 with a B.A. in American Studies. After commissioning, Sarah began work on her M.A. in safety, security, and emergency management from Eastern Kentucky University while she was pregnant with her first and second child and graduated in 2013. She earned a second M.S. in hospital administration and public policy from Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in 2018. She was a Fellow at the Department of State, Medical Bureau, Office of Operational Medicine and assisted with the emergency medical planning for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics in South Korea.

When not decisively engaged in planning and executing unconventional warfare medical exercises throughout multiple NATO countries, Sarah writes fiction work under a pen name and spends time with her four rescue dogs (Maddox, Bo, Apollo, and Luna) and two rescue cats (Oreo and Spots) that her daughters, Audie and Paisley, rescued in Mississippi in 2021. Certified with Les Mills as a group fitness instructor in Body Pump, Body Attack, Grit, Sprint, and Shapes; there’s also time to help others achieve their fitness goals at the gym.

As a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient, Sarah recognized the need for a new troop in the Hope Mills, North Carolina area and started Troop 705 in 2021. The troop has gone from just 2 members at inception to more than 20 and is currently planning a trip to Latvia at the end of the summer to link up with a sister troop there. Sarah is also an area event director for the North Carolina Costal Pines Council and has helped run seven events since 2023. Sarah’s volunteer work was key to her family’s selection as the Fort Bragg Family of the Year 2022 and she was also recognized with the Silver-level Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2023.
