My take on ‘take’: Dr Birbal Jha

The word ‘take’ is a general term applicable to any manner of getting someone or something into one’s possession or control as in ‘he took the paper and gave it to me’. Thus, the basic meaning of ‘take’ is to lay hold of something with your hands and gain its possession. In other words, taking something means gaining its possession, whereas giving something means transferring the possession to someone else. For example, let me take a pen and sign those documents once I’m convinced. Then you can take them to the authority as required. However, it has many other figurative and extended meanings, such as I take comfort/ delight in interacting with you.
Remember that ‘take’ is a transitive verb. Hence, it takes an object. Take /teɪk/ falls under the category of irregular verbs as opposed to the regular verbs that end in -ed when they turn into V2 and V3. The second form of take is ‘took’ which has a soft pronunciation— /tʊk/. The third form is ‘taken’, and ‘taking’ and ‘takes’ are the fourth and fifth forms respectively.
Take is one of the most often-used words in English. It is used in many different ways and contexts. Remember that ‘take’ as a dummy verb is used with nouns to say that somebody is doing something, performing an action, etc. In other words, take is used in conjunction with a noun referring to an action. For example, take/ have a look at the sentence. I have taken/ made a decision to brush up (on) my English, taking a break from my job. Hence, I’m taking a course at British Lingua.
To keep my mind and body fresh, I take/ have a shower religiously. Further, I take a deep breath and release air slowly during yoga. It takes a bit of time. But then, it is good for wellbeing. I take a yoga mat to the park where I do yoga. If you take something from one place to another, you carry it there. General advice is not to forget to take/ carry your ID card when you go out.
Have and take are both commonly used with nouns as their objects. There is often a difference between British and American usage. As an example of British usage, I take a bath on a regular basis. The phrase “I take a bath” is typical of American usage. To take a walk or nap is an American usage whereas to go for a walk/ ride/ swim or have a nap is British.
The verb ‘take’ is not used when anything is moved to the speaker or listener. For example, you can’t say, can you take me the book from the desk, please? The correct sentence would be, can you bring me the book from the desk, please? Further, ‘take’ is not used when talking about having a meal or a drink. ‘We took dinner together yesterday ‘is the wrong expression. To correct it, ‘took has to be replaced by ‘had’
To be honest, I must tell you that Laloo can speak English very well, but some people take a dig at his accent because he comes from Bihar. To take a dig or jab or jibe means to make a sarcastic or insulting remark or criticism at someone.
If you say that I’m going to take an exam or test, it means you are a student, and you will write the answers to the set of questions given. In other words, your teacher or an authority gives you an exam, and you take it, sit it, or write it.
It takes time to do something. If something takes a certain amount of time, you need that amount of time to do it. This article is a three-minute read. It means it will take three minutes to read it. Anyway, how much time does it take you to finish an article on the editorial page?
Bring, fetch, carry, and take appear to be synonyms for certain meanings. However, each of them has varying uses. At times, they are not interchangeable.
Happen, occur, and take place look to be similar. They have a similar meaning. But the first two are used to talk about events that are not planned, whereas take place is used to talk about either planned or unplanned events

Geeta Bhakti Amrit Mahotsava Day-3 Marks the Return to Roots
Alandi, Pune, 7 February 2024: The tone of the day was set with the Haripath written by Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Ji in a set of 28 Marathi Abhangas by 750 Warkari students organised by Geeta Pariwar. Followed by Chiranjeev Pujan, a ceremony to pay obeisance to spiritual gurus as a mark of respect.
The 2 nd day of Shrimad Bhagavad Katha Saptaha began by paying respect to all the Spiritual Gurus present. Today being the Shat Tila Ekadashi happens to be the day when Param Pujya Swami Shri Govind Giriji Maharaj was born. Kathakar Pujya Swami Shri Rajendradasji Maharaj quoted, “Persons of great significance are destined to be born on a divinely auspicious day, and Swami ji happens to be one of those greats. One who is yawning is Dwapar Yug. One who is steadfast in performing his duties is Treta Yug. One who is disposed to perform one’s duties diligently or with mastery is Satyug.

Azerbaijan Wins YCO 2024 Gold, Philippines and Nepal share Silver and Italy Bronze
Pune, 6th February 2024: The historic and grand 10th IIHM Young Chef Olympiad drew to a close at a glamorous Closing Ceremony organised in Kolkata. Azerbaijan’s Leyla Valiyeva won the coveted gold trophy. The silver was shared between Philippines’ Clifford Jeff Cadunggo Unabia and Kamal Thapa of Nepal. Italy’s Francesco Orsi lifted the bronze trophy.
At the end of seven eventful days across six cities in India, an epic edition of the world’s Biggest Culinary Battle came to a glamorous close. Connecting over 60 countries of the world, YCO24 was one of the biggest in size and scale. The Closing Ceremony was equally grand and exciting as it took place at Kolkata’s popular amusement park, Wet o Wild.
Besides the top three, YCO 2024 had a long list of special category winners. The Plate Trophy round that was held between the next best teams ranked between 11 to 20 in the competition, went to India’s Lenin Bopanna. The Kitchen Cut Management Award went to New Zealand. The Best Vegetarian Dish went to Nepal while the Best Crème Souffle a l’Orange went to Italy.
Six Best Mentor Nominee Awards were given away based on each of the mentor’s recommendations about their respective participants. The awards went to Greece, Jordan, Netherlands, Ethiopia, Botswana and Equatorial Guinea. The six Best Young Chef Ambassador Awards went to Australia, Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Scotland, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Participants were also marked on Best Hygiene and Kitchen Practice maintained during competition and this award went to six countries, namely, Namibia, Portugal, England, Bulgaria, Armenia, Azerbaijan. The Best Knife Skills Award went to Thailand, Portugal, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Lord Bilimoria Rising Stars Award went to Namibia, Albania, Uzbekistan, Mauritius, Ireland and Oman. The Gold Global Sustainability Award went to Kenya. The Spirit of Young Chef Olympiad International Award went to Lesotho.
The Dr Bose Challenge Trophy that was introduced this year for participants who did not come in the top 20 teams, went to Kenya and Switzerland.
Organised by the International Hospitality Council (IHC) and hosted by the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM), YCO 2024 was a true celebration of the spirit of One World One YCO.
YCO 2024 had a brilliant panel of esteemed judges from around the world. Led by Prof
David Foskett, OBE, Chairman of the Jury, Chef John Wood, the Founder and Director of Kitchen Cut was Chief Judge of the event. Deputy Chief Judge was Chef Rahul Akerkar, renowned Chef and Restaurateur. The panel of Jury included some famous globally famous culinary faces such as Chef Gary Maclean, National Chef of Scotland, Sicilian Chef Enzo Oliveri, pastry chef and chocolatier Sarah Hartnett, Dato’ Chef Abdul Wahab Zamzani, Celebrity Chef from Malaysia, Chef Neil Rippington, International Director, IIHM and Chef Mario Perera, Executive Chef Dorchester Collection.
YCO 2024 continued to embrace the important and significant theme of Sustainability promoting the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A special award, the Zenobia Nadirshaw Diamond Research Award went to students who had done research on the SDGs and how to achieve them to make the world a better place to live. Four awards in this category went to Kenya, Bangladesh, India and Italy.

Sony World Photography Awards
The World Photography Organisation and Sony India are delighted to reveal Mitu Kajaria as India’s National Award winner for the Sony World Photography Awards 2024. The National Awards program is an initiative set up by the World Photography Organisation and Sony to support local photographic communities around the world, with 54 countries taking part this year.
Over 395,000 images from over 220 countries and territories were submitted to the Sony World Photography Awards 2024.
Mitul was anonymously selected by judges for his photograph Child Sleeping at a Construction Site entered the Portraiture category of the Open competition. The young child of a daily wage construction worker napping in a makeshift bed at a construction site.
PHOTOGRAPHER’S BIOGRAPHY
Mitul is a photographer, curator, and educator with a background in Architecture, currently training in Psychology & Psychodrama. His work orbits around vital themes: mental health, diverse archives, and the interplay between architecture, urban landscapes, and humanity. He feels his identity and pursuits stem from the crossroads of his architectural foundation, his commitment to mental health advocacy, and over a decade of artistic practice.

TOI Presents the 6th Edition of the Times of India Sports Awards
Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, February 6, 2024: Recognizing the unwavering commitment and outstanding achievements of Indian athletes, The Times of India announces the return of the 6th edition of its prestigious event, the TOI Sports Awards (TOISA). Set against the regal backdrop of Lucknow, the City of Nawabs, the awards ceremony will take place on February 23, 2024, in the presence of esteemed personalities from the realms of Indian sports.
In collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh government, TOI unveiled this edition, reinforcing its dedication to honoring sporting excellence. Themed #MoreSweatMoreGlory for the second consecutive year, TOISA pays homage to the relentless spirit of athletes and para-athletes who illuminated the sports landscape in 2023. Beyond recognising the standout figures of Indian sports, TOISA remains committed to nurturing the future generation of athletes, inspiring countless youngsters to pursue their dreams.

A distinguished jury of legendary Indian sports personalities decided the winners, including Paralympic champion and Padma Shri Awardee Deepa Malik, Olympic-winning weightlifter Karnam Malleswari, and hockey star Zafar Iqbal. They were joined by prominent figures such as long jump star and Vice-President of the Athletics Federation of India, Anju Bobby George, badminton coach and two-time Padma Awardee Pullela Gopichand, Olympic-winning wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, and Vice-President of the IOA & Olympic-winning shooter Gagan Narang. The jury was chaired by Adille Sumariwalla, President of the Athletics Federation of India and Vice-President of the IAAF.
The jury meeting, held in Delhi last week, marked a rigorous selection process considering various parameters to determine the winners. The awards will be presented during a grand ceremony scheduled later this month in Lucknow, promising an evening that celebrates the zenith of sporting achievements.
