Why cardiac rehabilitation? ‘Cinderella’ or an evidence-based pillar of care?
Cardiac rehabilitation is often referred to as the “Cinderella” of cardiovascular medicine because it is historically underutilized and underappreciated compared to other aspects of cardiac care, despite its significant benefits and evidence-based foundation. However, it is more accurately described as an evidence-based pillar of care.

Here’s why cardiac rehabilitation is considered an essential component of cardiovascular care:
1. **Evidence-based benefits**: Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation in improving outcomes for individuals with various cardiovascular conditions, including heart failure, coronary artery disease, and after cardiac surgery or procedures. These benefits include improved exercise capacity, reduced risk of hospitalizations, decreased mortality rates, and enhanced quality of life.
2. **Clinical guidelines**: Major cardiovascular organizations, including the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and European Society of Cardiology, endorse cardiac rehabilitation as an integral part of the management of cardiovascular diseases. Guidelines recommend cardiac rehabilitation for eligible patients as a class I recommendation, indicating strong evidence and consensus for its use.
3. **Multifaceted approach**: Cardiac rehabilitation programs offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to cardiovascular care. They typically include structured exercise training, education on heart-healthy lifestyle behaviors (such as diet, smoking cessation, and medication adherence), psychosocial support, and risk factor modification. This holistic approach addresses the multifactorial nature of cardiovascular diseases and promotes long-term health and well-being.
4. **Cost-effectiveness**: Despite initial costs, cardiac rehabilitation has been shown to be cost-effective in the long term by reducing hospitalizations, preventing complications, and improving overall health outcomes. Investing in cardiac rehabilitation can lead to significant healthcare savings and better utilization of resources.
While cardiac rehabilitation may have been overlooked or marginalized in the past, its evidence-based benefits and importance in cardiovascular care are increasingly recognized. Efforts to promote awareness, improve accessibility, and integrate cardiac rehabilitation into routine clinical practice are essential for optimizing outcomes and enhancing the quality of care for individuals with cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, rather than being a “Cinderella” of cardiovascular medicine, cardiac rehabilitation should be acknowledged and valued as a cornerstone of evidence-based care.

ennheiser invests in Norwegian scale-up business sensiBel
India, February 23, 2024 – Sennheiser, together with existing investors, is investing 7 million euros in the Norwegian scale-up business sensiBel. The company has developed optical MEMS microphones which demonstrate first-class sound quality despite their miniature size. The miniature microphones enable a completely new and improved experience in application areas such as consumer electronics, automotive, conferencing solutions, and medical devices.

Constantly building the future of the audio world and creating exceptional sound experiences – that is the aspiration that drives the Sennheiser Group. Driven by this aim, the family-owned company is further expanding its strong position as a provider of professional audio solutions. “We want to grow sustainably as a company. In addition to investments in our existing business, this also includes investments in promising future fields outside of our company, providing these align well to our company and our vision,” explains Co-CEO Daniel Sennheiser. Andreas Sennheiser adds: “sensiBel’s innovative optical MEMS technology is clearly this type of promising emerging field. As investors, we look forward to actively driving forward this groundbreaking development.”
sensiBel has developed a miniature microphone using optical technology that enables a generational shift in MEMS microphone performance, which is now sampling with lead customers. “sensiBel shares the same vision as Sennheiser and we are proud to welcome Sennheiser as investor,” says sensiBel CEO Sverre Dale Moen. He continues: “We believe an investment from such a highly recognized audio company speaks of the merits of the technology and the potential for optical MEMS technology to shape the future of miniature microphones.”
The distinctive feature of sensiBel’s unique technology is the use of light waves to measure the movement of the diaphragm. By contrast, conventional MEMS microphones measure an electric field between the moving diaphragm and a backplate. In sensiBel’s optical system however, a laser generates light beams that are projected onto the microphone membrane and reflected on a photo detector. The reflected beams are captured and processed in an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) with a digital output data interface. In contrast to the conventional method, this new technology makes it possible to measure very small movements and therefore capture very low noise levels – even when there is a high level of loud background noise. Additionally, the optical MEMS microphone can withstand high sound pressure levels providing a large dynamic range to the users. As a result, the microphones generate significantly better sound quality than previous MEMS solutions on the market – with a specification of 80 dBA SNR (14 dBA noise floor), 132 dB dynamic range, 24-bit digital output, and with low power consumption, while being just as compact.

I resonated with Jinal’s honest and upfront demeanour: Nupur Nagpal on her character in Amazon miniTV’s Dillogical
Mumbai, 23 February 2024: Amazon miniTV, Amazon’s free video streaming service, recently released the romantic comedy series ‘Dillogical’. Offering a delightful blend of romance and comedy, it revolves around the lives of Saransh and Jinal, whose relationship takes an unexpected turn when Jinal embarks on a journey of self-discovery. As they navigate through the complexities of love and the advent of an open relationship, the series explores the dynamics and intricacies of human emotions, embracing the different shades of love. Dialogical boasts Anshuman Malhotra, Nupur Nagpal, Priyank Sharma, Chetan Dhawan, and Prasanna Bisht in key roles.

Delving into the depth of her character, Nupur Nagpal, who essays the role of an independent and outspoken girl, Jinal in the series, reflected on the similarities between herself and the character. She said, “I resonated with Jinal’s honest and upfront demeanor because I too like to approach most relationships like her. When I was growing up, I used to feel extremely protected. That’s why I always felt the urge to grow and find my wings. So, I could totally relate to Jinal’s desires. Just like her, I did not just want to do the things that were expected of me but also yearned for the freedom to figure out what I liked to do. It is very difficult for girls, even for the ones from metro cities, to have that freedom. So many times, they don’t even express their desires because of the fear of being judged, and that’s exactly what drew me to this character.”
Adding to this, she further spoke about the stark differences between Jinal and Saransh. “Jinal is really bad at science and maths. Since childhood, she has been dependent on Saransh. He used to work hard and help her get through the exams. On the other hand, Jinal has a creative mind; she is more into performing arts – that’s what her heart beats for. She is not a techie like Saransh,” shared Nupur.

Women shouldn’t shy away from seeking support; it’s impossible to do everything alone, says ISRO Deputy Director Nandini Harinath at Ideas of India Summit 3.0
Mumbai, February 23, 2024: In a key session at Ideas of India Summit 3.0, women achievers gained central focus. “Growing up with techno-bureaucrat and mathematician parents, education was ingrained as a priority in my life from the start. My father had a remarkable talent for explaining the physics of everyday occurrences, which instilled in me a deep curiosity and appreciation for the world around me,” said Nandini Harinath, Deputy Director, Spacecraft Operations Area, ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network, ISRO, sharing her experience of growing up the ranks from Junior Engineer at ISRO to leading major space missions such as Mangalyaan and Chandrayaan-2
On the inaugural day of ABP Network’s flagship event, the ‘Ideas of India’ Summit 3.0, leading women intellectuals and achievers in STEM fields joined together to explore the theme ‘Women in STEM: Working in the Trenches, Reaching for the Stars’, shedding light on how women defy all challenges experienced in the modern-day workforce and their road to success.

Nandini Harinath also shared the importance of family support, teamwork, and personal well-being. “Juggling the demands of family and a career in the space industry has often felt like navigating an obstacle course. However, I firmly believe in the power of teamwork. Throughout my journey, I have learned the importance of seeking support from those around me. No accomplishment is achieved in isolation, and leaning on my family and society for assistance has been crucial during times of need”, she added.
Nandini Harinath has been an indispensable asset to ISRO, with her dedication and expertise in space science. Explaining the future of India’s space exploration efforts, she said, “With the emergence of private players in the sector, the possibilities are endless. I envision India taking a leading role in space travel, not only for scientific advancement but also for the profound impact it could have on shaping our future as a society.”
Discussing her journey and the rise of women scientists at ISRO, Dr. Nigar Shaji, Project Director, Aditya L-1 Mission, ISRO, said, “Since school, I have believed in pursuing the uncommon path. My parents, particularly my father, a math graduate turned agricultural specialist, encouraged me. At ISRO, there is no glass ceiling, passion is supported. For women, balancing work, family, and personal life is essential, with health as a priority. As far as the space industry in concerned, the Aditya mission is crucial for understanding the sun and space weather, ensuring Earth’s protection. Leading the world in the space industry should be our aim. Visibility for women in STEM is vital; education must be engaging and inclusive from the grassroots.”
Elaborating on the vital role played by women in STEM to break the glass ceiling and drive India’s growth, Prof. (Dr.) Annapurni Subramaniam, FASc., FNASc., Director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, said, “It is important to be happy with yourself, as a woman we have multiple roles to play and one cannot bend to all requirements, there has to be a distinction. As such, there is limited conversation about women’s health. It is important to create a framework at home, where support can be asked from the family and traditional roles can be given a pushback. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics observatory in Kodaikanal is celebrating its 125 years, which is capturing the Sun’s data. We have a night-time observatory in Ladakh, 2500 meters above sea level. Our capabilities in astronomy are well established, thus India is being looked at as a support and resource in important missions for ground-based and space-based. India is also a major partner in two important projects in gravitational wave direction- LIGO, and Square Kilometer Array to look at the universe at very early stages.”
The ABP Network’s ‘Ideas of India’ Summit 3.0 spotlighting the ‘The People’s Agenda’ brought a confluence of ideas and ideators to a common platform celebrating the country’s people and its plurality. The two-day summit hosted policymakers, cultural ambassadors, industry experts, celebrities, business leaders, economists, and leading luminaries to delve into the fundamental ideas of liberty, justice, equality, and diversity that define India, its society, culture, and politics. The meaningful deliberations on diverse topics had the brightest minds across sectors providing insights about the nation’s trajectory and its journey to become Viksit Bharat.
