Do not ignore any backache, Prompt and early intervention can treat the condition

Back pain is a prevalent issue that affects millions worldwide, often stemming from various causes such as muscle strain, poor posture, injuries, or degenerative conditions. Among these, slipped discs remain a significant concern due to their debilitating impact on daily life. Understanding the signs, causes, and diagnostic measures for slipped discs is crucial for effective management and prevention of long-term complications.
Slipped discs, also known as herniated or bulging discs, manifest through various symptoms including localized or radiating pain, muscle weakness, and numbness. These symptoms often arise due to factors like incorrect lifting techniques, poor posture, sedentary lifestyles, or genetic predispositions. Ignoring early warning signs can exacerbate the condition, leading to further damage to spinal discs over time.
The Role of Prolonged Sitting in Slipped Disc Development
Prolonged sitting, especially with poor posture, significantly increases the risk of developing a slipped disc, particularly in the lumbar spine. This sedentary behavior not only stresses spinal discs but also weakens supporting muscles, compounding the risk of disc degeneration and herniation. Incorporating regular breaks, maintaining proper posture, and utilizing ergonomic furniture are essential to mitigate this risk.
Diagnostic Measures for Slipped Discs
Early diagnosis of slipped discs is paramount for timely intervention and management. Healthcare professionals employ various diagnostic tests including physical examinations, imaging tests like MRI and CT scans, and electrodiagnostic tests to assess symptoms, identify nerve compression, and determine the extent of disc herniation.
Treatment Strategies for Slipped Discs
The treatment approach for slipped discs depends on factors such as symptom severity, location of the herniation, and patient-specific considerations. Conservative treatments including pain management, physical therapy, activity modification, and epidural steroid injections are often effective in alleviating symptoms. However, surgical intervention such as microdiscectomy, laminectomy, or spinal fusion may be necessary in cases of severe pain or neurological deficits.
CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT:
A. PAIN MANAGEMENT: Over-the-counter pain medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen may help alleviate pain associated with a slipped disc. In some cases, prescription pain medications may be necessary for more severe pain
B. PHYSICAL THERAPY: Physical therapy exercises and techniques can help improve spinal flexibility, strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, and alleviate symptoms associated with a slipped disc. Physical therapists may also use modalities such as heat, ice, ultrasound, or electrical stimulation to reduce pain and inflammation
C. ACTIVITY MODIFICATION: Avoiding activities that worsen symptoms, such as heavy lifting, bending, or prolonged sitting, and adopting ergonomic practices can help reduce strain on the spine and promote healing of the disc herniation
D. EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTIONS: Injections of corticosteroids into the space around the spinal nerves (epidural space) can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain associated with a slipped disc, particularly if conservative treatments alone are not effective
SURGICAL INTERVENTION:
A. MICRODISCECTOMY: In cases where conservative treatments fail to provide relief or if there are signs of nerve compression causing severe pain or neurological deficits (such as weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control), surgical intervention may be necessary. Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to remove the portion of the herniated disc that is compressing the spinal nerves, thereby relieving pressure and alleviating symptom
B. LAMINECTOMY: In some cases, particularly if there is significant spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal) or if the disc herniation is associated with other spinal abnormalities, a laminectomy may be performed to remove a portion of the vertebral bone (lamina) to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves
C. SPINAL FUSION: In cases where there is instability of the spine or if multiple discs are affected, spinal fusion surgery may be recommended to stabilize the spine by fusing two or more vertebrae together using bone grafts, metal implants, or synthetic materials
Prompt and early diagnosis of back pain, especially when indicative of a slipped disc, is crucial for preventing long-term complications and improving patient outcomes. By understanding the symptoms, causes, and diagnostic measures associated with slipped discs, healthcare providers can offer timely interventions tailored to individual patient needs, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for those affected by this common yet debilitating condition.

Wockhradt Hospitals, Mira Road initiates an awareness campaign on Immunization catering to people of all age groups

Mumbai: A team of doctors have come together to bring awareness about Vaccination catering to all age groups at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road. Millions of children are being deprived of essential routine vaccinations, putting their lives at risk. Not only does vaccination safeguard individual health, but it also plays a significant role in enhancing immunity by preventing the spread of contagious illnesses. Vaccinations offer long-term benefits by reducing the burden on healthcare systems and preventing unnecessary hospitalizations. Emphasizing the importance of vaccination and creating a safer environment for everyone, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road conducts an immunization program catering to people of all age groups.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a decline in routine childhood vaccines with nearly 67 million children missing out on one or more potentially life-saving vaccines, according to a UNICEF report titled “The State of the World’s Children 2023”. There is also an alarming surge in cases of measles in the country as a large number of children have fallen prey to this vaccine-preventable condition. In 2022, an estimated 11 lakh children missed their first dose of the measles vaccine in India, placing the country among the ten nations with the highest measles vaccination gap, even post-pandemic, a report from the World Health Organization and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals. The report also highlights India as one of the 37 countries that experienced outbreaks, recording 40,967 cases in 2022.
Doctors highlight that Immunity is nothing but power to prevent infections, vaccines produce immune reactions from the body without producing disease. When someone receives the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR vaccine), it triggers a similar immune response as if the body had encountered the pathogens naturally. In India, there are vaccines for 26 diseases but typically only 10-12 diseases are vaccinated against. Vaccination is crucial for people of all ages, including adolescents, pregnant women, and the elderly over 40, and helps protect against various infections such as Influenza, Pneumonia, and Hepatitis. The DTaP vaccine is crucial for combating Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Whooping cough (pertussis), while the MMR vaccine is effective against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. Meningitis can be prevented with the Meningococcal vaccine, chicken pox due to the varicella vaccine, polio with the IPV vaccine, and pneumonia through the pneumococcal vaccine. The government also provides HPV vaccines to raise awareness about Cervical Cancer Prevention.
Dr Ankit Gupta, Paediatric Critical Care Specialist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road explained, “Vaccination rates are declining across the nation, affecting both children and adults due to a lack of awareness about immunization. Those with mumps present with severe headaches, Encephalitis, and symptoms such as headaches, fever, seizures, unconsciousness, altered sensorium, CSF flow obstruction leading to long-lasting complications in the brain, orchitis an inflammation of one or both testicles causing infertility in men due to mumps and skipping MMR vaccine. The cases of empyema, a complication of pneumonia caused by not receiving the pneumonia vaccine, are on the rise.
“Despite the government offering free vaccines, many people are still not getting vaccinated, leading to complications. Unvaccinated children born just before or during the COVID-19 pandemic are now suffering from various vaccine-preventable diseases. The children who missed their vaccinations have now aged out of routine immunization programs and are considered zero-dose children who are not vaccinated at all even with the first dose. Boosting vaccination rates in children through targeted campaigns that educate parents will be beneficial. By highlighting the benefits of vaccinations in preventing serious diseases and debunking common myths, parents can make informed decisions for their children’s health,” concluded Dr Badshah Khan, Consultant Paediatrics, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road
“Optional vaccines such as Pneumococcal Vaccine, flu vaccine, Varicella vaccine for chickenpox, and Hepatitis A vaccine should be given to adults. Flu or influenza vaccine should be taken every year by people of all age groups, especially Diabetes, Kidney, Heart, and Lung disease patients. Every year based on the mutation of the virus, a new vaccine is administered to adults. Even the Pneumococcal vaccine should be given to high-risk populations having Kidney, and Heart Disease, taking Chemotherapy, and those awaiting Transplant. Pneumonia can be fatal in those who are immunosuppressant. Females are given the Gardasil vaccine for the prevention of Cervical Cancer for HPV-associated cancers ideally till puberty age. The Shingles vaccine is given to the geriatric population after 50 for the prevention of herpes zoster (HZ). These vaccines are available for adults in the country. Flu is like an epidemic, Influenza should be included in the mass vaccination program for the benefit of everyone,” concluded Dr Jinendra Jain. Consultant Internal Medicine, Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road.
| Age Group | For |
| After Birth | Hepatitis B vaccine. Ideally, the first dose is given within 12–24 hours of birth, but kids not previously immunized can get it at any age. Some low birth weight infants will get it at 1 month or when they’re discharged from the hospital. |

Repsol Honda Team look for progress in Jerez

Spain, 24th April 2024: With the complications of the Americas GP behind them, the Repsol Honda Team is aiming to reset and return to making forward progress at the familiar Gran Premio Estrella Galicia 0,0 de España
The Circuit de Jerez – Angel Nieto first hosted a Grand Prix in 1987 and has become one of the most well-attended and iconic races on the calendar with fans flocking to the grandstand and hills around the track. At 4.42 kilometers long, the track has created legendary moments such as Doohan vs Criville, Rossi vs Gibernau, Marquez vs Lorenzo, and many more. Honda has won the Spanish Grand Prix in the premier class on 25 occasions, first in 1983 and most recently in 2019.
Leaving Austin with a double DNF, Joan Mir is eager to get back to the form he showed in the opening two races of the year and continue maximizing his performance throughout the weekend. The Jerez circuit offers another contrasting track in the opening gambit of the MotoGP season for Mir and the Repsol Honda Team to test the RC213V machine in the hunt for improvements.
Like his teammate, Luca Marini arrives in Spain looking for more. The Italian was able to complete both races in America but remains focused on making progress forward and joining the fight for top Honda honors consistently. At this stage, more bike time and more information to work with are what is needed. Marini’s best finish at the Spanish Grand Prix is sixth in the premier class, achieved in 2023.
Stefan Bradl and the HRC Test Team will join as a fifth Honda RC213V this weekend, the team regularly testing at Jerez throughout the year.
A one-day post-race Test will follow the Grand Prix on Monday.
Joan Mir
“I think coming to a race like Jerez where you have all the home fans to support you will be a help after the tough weekend we had in Austin. It’s important to put that behind us and keep working like we did at the start of the year to understand the capability of the bike this weekend. We are realistic about what is possible, and we need to focus on making improvements and aiming for more in the future. It’s about step by step, making steady progress and we can’t expect a big leap at this stage.”
Luca Marini
“It’s another weekend to keep working with the team and aim for more improvements. Now is not the time to stop working, we have to keep on gathering information and not only trying to improve our current package but also working on developments for the future. Jerez is a good track for this kind of job, the Test Team has done a lot of testing here and will be with us this weekend so it will be interesting to see what we can learn from this.”
