When to Act: Recognizing the Warning Signs of Diabetic Foot Complications
Dr Rajeev Premnath, General Laparoscopic Surgeon and Endoscopist, Minimally Invasive Proctology Department at Ramakrishna Hospital, Bengaluru

Your feet are like health detectives, giving you valuable clues about your overall well-being. Instead of waiting until you’ve accidentally hurt them, start paying attention to your feet—they might be trying to warn you about potential health issues. After all, your feet are more than just the sturdy support for your adventures; they’re like a health barometer, ready to share important insights about your body.
If your feet frequently experience the sensation of “falling asleep,” it could be a signal that diabetes is at play. Elevated sugar levels might be causing a crucial nerve in your foot to misfire. Don’t ignore the warning signs—open sores, cuts, or injuries that drag your feet in healing could be red flags. It’s like your feet are sending an SOS, so don’t hesitate to seek a podiatrist’s expertise. If there’s a tingling or numbness sensation, it could be your body’s way of whispering, “Check for diabetes!”
Diabetes in India
In India, about 77 million adults aged 18 and above have type 2 diabetes, and almost 25 million are on the brink of developing diabetes. India stands second globally in the diabetes count. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mess with how our bodies handle blood sugar, and it all revolves around the hormone, insulin. Insulin, crafted by the pancreas’ beta cells, shuttles glucose from our food into cells for energy. Type 2 diabetes kicks in when cells resist insulin, causing sugar levels to rise, potentially impacting the heart, kidneys, and vision. Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune battle, destroys insulin-making beta cells with no cure, requiring insulin. Type 2 diabetes, often tied to lifestyle choices like obesity, can be tackled with a mix of healthy eating, exercise, and sometimes medications. Now, let’s explore the signs your feet may be signaling that it’s time to take action, especially if you have diabetes.
Exploring Diabetic Foot Complications
Nerve Troubles (Neuropathy): For people with diabetes, a common challenge is neuropathy, when foot nerves act up, bringing on tingling that hints your nerves might be in trouble, along with numbness or pain. If you notice a burning feeling, it could be a sign of nerve discomfort. Weak muscles are like a warning sign for nerve problems. Finding these signals early on is crucial for proper care.
Blood Flow Blockade (Peripheral Artery Disease): Another issue connected to diabetes is peripheral artery disease, which messes with blood flow to the extremities, like the feet. Watch for chilly or cold feet, as it might mean less blood flow. Slow-healing wounds could suggest circulation problems, and changes in skin color may signal vascular issues—warning signs that need quick attention.
Immunity Dilemma (Infections): Diabetes weakens the immune system, making infections more likely. Foot infections can escalate fast, stressing the importance of keeping a close eye and taking timely action.
Toenail Health: Your toenails spill secrets, especially about diabetes. If they break easily or get thick, it’s a nudge to check your blood sugar. Dark or yellow nails, tricky ingrown toenails, and slow healing are signals for a diabetes check. Diabetes can lead to toenail fungus, so stay alert for any thickness or color changes.
Neglecting foot issues can have a domino effect on overall health, potentially impacting the cardiovascular system and mobility.
Steps Towards Health Wellbeing
In a nutshell, embracing a healthy lifestyle is key to managing diabetes and ensuring optimal foot health. Start by keeping a close watch on your blood sugar levels through a balanced diet and regular exercise. Equally important is choosing the right footwear, acting as a shield against potential diabetes-related issues. Also don’t forget good hygiene practices, a robust defense lowering the risk of foot infections. The most crucial aspect is focusing on enhancing immunity.

Persistent Launches Population Health Management Solution
February9, 2024
Santa Clara, CA and Pune, India
Persistent Systems (BSE and NSE: PERSISTENT), a global Digital Engineering and Enterprise Modernization leader, today launched an innovative Generative AI-powered Population Health Management (PHM) Solution in collaboration with Microsoft. Aligned with value-based care models, the Solution identifies Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) to determine patients’ non- clinical needs and better predict the cost of care driven by clinical conditions. It helps patients receive quality care at the right time and in the right place, while optimizing capacity and cost- effectiveness for healthcare providers and organizations.
Predictive risk modeling is a critical tool to identify patients who will require significant medical assistance, as a relatively small proportion of the population accounts for the majority of healthcare spending. Leveraging Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and Dynamics 365 Customer Insights, Persistent’s PHM Solution identifies SDoH based on Electronic Health Records (EHR) data. Since up to 80% of key patient information within an EHR is in the form of unstructured clinical notes, Persistent’s Solution accurately extracts this information, unlike PHM solutions in the market, which are solely dependent on third-party data sources or survey data. This innovative method, compared to existing natural language processing-based approaches, is intended to improve patient outcomes through more timely and intelligent care recommendations, and provides higher accuracy, improved scale, and increased compliance.
In addition, Persistent’s PHM Solution assists a physician or a caregiver in recommending personalized interventions through community-based programs and care management teams to prevent emergency department visits, avoidable readmissions, and extended hospital stays. The Solution decreases 30-day readmissions by up to 60%, and continuously monitors correlations and outcomes to ensure quality patient engagement.
Persistent and Microsoft share a longstanding 32-year relationship. With more than 4,500 Microsoft-certified consultants and 50+ IPs and accelerators, Persistent is focused on establishing a resilient ecosystem supported by delivering top-notch digital solutions that aim to improve health outcomes, offer enriched patient experiences, reduce care costs, and optimize operational efficiency. The PHM Solution is a testament to Persistent’s deep domain expertise and proficiency in leveraging Microsoft platforms to help its clients deliver personalized healthcare. The PHM Solution is currently available on Azure Marketplace.
Ganesh Nathella, Senior Vice President & General Manager – Global Lead, HLS Business, Persistent:
“Addressing the causes of negative healthcare outcomes is increasingly understood as a critical component of any PHM program. With this innovative Solution, built on Persistent’s deep domain expertise and differentiated frameworks along with Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and Dynamics 365 Customer Insights, we are identifying care access and health equity issues by optimizing enterprise capacities and ensuring cost-effectiveness. We’re confident that through actionable and trackable insights and personalized intervention, this Solution will significantly improve physician’s and caregiver’s decision-making to enhance patient experience and overall care quality.”David Rhew, M.D., Global Chief Medical Officer & Vice President of Healthcare, Microsoft:
“The goal of population health management is to improve overall health of a population by applying cost-efficient interventions designed to promote better health for groups of individuals. To accomplish this, we need to harness data to identify individual needs, monitor the success of interventions, and benchmark against comparative data. Leveraging Microsoft Azure OpenAI
Service and Dynamics 365 Customer Insights to extract and track crucial SDoH data, Persistent’s PHM Solution will yield personalized care recommendations and help reduce costs, ultimately contributing to enhanced care quality.”

Teach For India’s Revolutionary Retreat brings together student leaders and young changemakers from across India
Mumbai, 9th February 2024– Hosted by Kids Education Revolution (KER), Teach For India’s global platform for student leadership, the Revolutionary Retreat is a one-of-a-kind space for like-minded and passionate student leaders to come together as a community and dream about a better world. It is a space for students across the country to reflect on their own leadership, build the skills they need to drive sustainable impact, and join a movement of leaders who are reimagining education through community-level solutions for change.

This year, the 3-day Revolutionary Retreat brought together over 150 students and educators from across India, and abroad (Malaysia, New Zealand, and Kazakhstan), at Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini in Bhayander, Mumbai.
KER Revolutionaries, or participants, are students who come from diverse backgrounds working on a range of changemaking projects, coming together to develop and strengthen their commitment to self, others, and India. Through immersive learning experiences, collaborative spaces, and reflective activities, students embark on a personal leadership journey that is rooted in the idea of building active citizenship and giving back to the community. The Revolutionaries at the retreat are guided by student mentors, who are paying it forward by helping a new set of students grow into empathetic, empowered, and confident young leaders. Anisha Ansari, a student mentor, shared, “It is a powerful thing to see students learning from each other, and helping each other grow. I feel like I am part of a community that is working towards the same goal – to build a better India”.
At this year’s retreat, students engaged in sessions that built their understanding of design thinking and collective leadership, as well as of Teach For India’s framework of the 8Cs – courage, compassion, consciousness, communication, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and curiosity. Through hands-on activities that encouraged children to think about the most pressing issues that impact them and their communities, through experiential learning spaces that deepened their understanding of India’s Constitutional Values and the role that they play in upholding them, and through a stimulating exposure visit to Mumbai’s Museum of Solutions – the young student leaders explored ideas of social justice, inequality, gender, discrimination, environment, and much more.
Shaheen Mistri, Founder and CEO of Teach For India, led a session where students explored “India and the World”, thinking about children in conflict zones, and the role that each of us can play in building a world that is safe, equitable, and just. Through the power of art, expression, and collaborative thinking, she led students to create a giant mandala as a symbol of peace and solidarity, that represented the idea of rebuilding and reimagining the world that our children are growing up in.
The 6th edition of Revolutionary Retreat concluded with a screening of the Conference of the Birds Film – a feature-length film based on Teach For India’s musical, that takes the audience on a journey through the valleys of Justice, Equality, Liberty, and Fraternity, in search of the true meaning of India. As students and educators watched this exploration of India’s values together, and reflected on their understanding of our Constitution, the power of partnership between students and educators was highlighted once again.
This year, the Retreat brought together KER Revolutionaries who are working on change projects exploring themes like gender equality, access to education, mental health and wellness, expression through art, and more – while also inviting educators and teachers who are partnering with students to create safe spaces, amplify student voices, and develop holistic learning experiences. Through a process that is grounded in the practice of reflection, listening, collaboration, and action, the Retreat sparked the desire for change in many young leaders and educators who are in our classrooms today.

Amrita Hospital Faridabad Ties Up with IIT Hyderabad to Develop New Technology
Hyderabad, February 09, 2024: Dr. Bhaskar Viswanathan, HoD, Department of Radiation Oncology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, has been recently selected for a research grant, meant to develop an indigenous robotic ultrasound for tumor motion and radiation hyperthermia for cancer treatment. The technology would be developed in association with Dr. Avinash Eranki, Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Medical Ultrasound Research Laboratory of Indian Institute of Technology – Hyderabad, Eranki Labs Private Limited, and Amrita Centre for Advanced Robotics.

Dr. Bhaskar Viswanathan, Head of Radiation Oncology Department at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad said, “It is a matter of immense pleasure and pride for us that we have been selected for this grant to indigenously develop robot-assisted ultrasound system for image-guided therapies and hyperthermia for cancer patients. It is a non-invasive technique that uses focused ultrasound waves and has a huge potential in cancer treatment like tumor ablation, mild hyperthermia for radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and motion management during radiation delivery.”
“This cutting-edge technology will allow precise localization of lesions, enabling targeted and effective delivery of therapeutic radiation and avoiding damage to the surrounding tissue and organs. Robotic ultrasound plays an important role in guiding the delivery of hyperthermia by accurately locating the tumor and monitoring its motion during treatment. Real-time tracking can be crucial in ensuring that hyperthermia is delivered precisely to the intended target,” the doctor said.
He explained that tumors in the body can move due to factors like breathing and organ motion. Tracking this motion is crucial for accurately delivering radiation therapy. Robotic ultrasound systems can be used to track the movement of tumors in real-time. They use robotic arms equipped with ultrasound transducers to continuously monitor the tumor position during treatment, thus improving targeting accuracy.
Hyperthermia involves raising the temperature of the tumor region to make cancer cells more sensitive to radiation. It also improves blood flow to the tumor, enhancing the delivery of oxygen and chemotherapy. Combining hyperthermia with radiation therapy can significantly enhance the therapeutic effects and theoretically allow for theoretic lower radiation doses, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Dr. Avinash Eranki, Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, and CEO of Eranki Labs Pvt. Ltd. said, “The need for spatially precise and efficacious delivery of radiation and ultrasound energy is possibly key to improved outcomes in patients with debilitating cancer disease.”
“The collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and Eranki Labs Private Limited enhances the project’s scope, leveraging the expertise of both medical and engineering domains. This interdisciplinary partnership is crucial for advancing technology in cancer care, emphasizing a holistic approach to treatment innovation. We expect to complete the project in 3 years, the grant for which was provided to us by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),” added Dr. Viswanathan.
