EY survey reveals that just 60% of music creators can pursue their careers on a full-time basis

Hyderabad/Mumbai, 7 December 2023: EY, the leading professional services firm, launched the first-ever comprehensive report on the state of the music publishing industry in India titled ‘The music creator economy: The rise of music publishing in India.’ The report aims to provide valuable insights into the current state, market potential, and perspectives surrounding music publishing in the country.

The report estimates that India generates over 20,000 original songs annually, contributed by 40,000 music creators. Music directly or indirectly generates over INR12,000 crore in revenues each year.

Commenting on the survey findings, Ashish Pherwani, EY India Media & Entertainment Leader, said, “Music is an important part of India’s media and entertainment sector and is an important contributor to India’s Soft Power. Both local and international labels have driven the music segment’s sound recording revenues for a long time. However, music publishing revenues remain much smaller, given the differing views on its applicability and litigation.”

Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA fame, now President of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), stated, “The works of songwriters and composers inspire our lives and enrich our cultures. With the support of publishers and authors societies, they are also a driver of economies that fuel other businesses and employ millions of people. This study can help improve many readers’ knowledge of our sector.”

The first-of-its-kind survey conducted by EY, in which 500 music creators participated, indicated that their financial income is unpredictable and often limited:

1. 87% of respondents would have liked to make a living off their music alone, but only 60% were able to do so.

2. Working outside of the traditional employer-employee relationship, one-time payments (upfront fees), live performances, and royalties were the primary sources of income for most creators.

3. A majority strongly believed that they needed to learn more about music production and monetization.

4. Only 56% of respondents had access to the equipment and infrastructure required to produce music.

5. 35% of respondents reinvested more than 50% of their earnings from music on equipment, gear, software, and other infrastructure required to create music.

While India consumes more music per capita than the world average, it ranks 14th in recorded music revenues. In contrast, publishing revenues are ranked 23rd due to various issues like lack of legal clarity and consequently, low compliance.

However, despite these challenges, India’s music publishing industry has grown, reaching INR884 crore (approx. US$100 million) in the fiscal year 2022-23. The Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS), with over 13,500 authors as its members, continues to expand its revenue, thanks to the support it has received from GOI, as more music users comply with publishing requirements.

SpiceJet’s Stock Soars as Company Secures Fresh Capital, Experts Bullish on Breakout

New Delhi: – Budget carrier SpiceJet’s Board will meet on Monday (December 11), to decide on the proposal to raise fresh capital in the Company through the issue of equity shares. Sources said the Company was looking for anywhere between $100-1200 million fresh equity infusion.

The airline’s stock jumped 20% on the Bombay Stock Exchange, hitting the upper circuit, on Thursday after the news broke.

Experts are extremely bullish on the stock, which is significantly undervalued.

“SpiceJet, with its market capitalization currently standing at around INR 4000 crore, appears to be significantly undervalued when compared to its peers in the Indian aviation industry. A substantial equity infusion into the airline can turn around the fortunes of the 18-year-old airline,” said an industry expert.

For reference, the market capitalization of IndiGo is INR 1.1 lakh crore. “This stark difference in market capitalization positions SpiceJet as an attractive investment opportunity, offering substantial growth potential and attractive returns for investors,” he said.

The airline has multiple strong points to its advantage. “SpiceJet holds coveted slots and routes at all important Indian and international airports like Dubai, Thailand, Oman, Colombo, Male etc., providing a competitive edge in the market and contributing to its potential for sustained growth. It also has a 200-plus plane order with Boeing for the its 737 Max aircraft.”

“A correction in SpiceJet’s stock prices is imminent and could result in sizeable returns for investors. We believe it stands out as the best bet among Indian aviation companies for growth and returns. SpiceJet’s current share prices present an advantageous entry point for investors looking to capitalize on potential upward movements,” a senior SpiceJet official said.

Global Music Industry Unites: International Music Creators Seminar 2023 Spurs Collaborations, Advocacy, and Visionary Discourse

Mumbai, 7th December 2023: The Indian Performing Rights Society (IPRS) hosted the International Music Creators Seminar on behalf of CISAC and the Asia Pacific Music Creators Alliance (APMA) on December 5th, 2023. The APMA International Music Creators Seminar 2023 featured insightful panel discussions, each dedicated to exploring different facets of the music industry.

How Artificial Intelligence Will Revolutionize the Music Industry

The first Panel was about How Artificial Intelligence Will Revolutionize the Music Industry. Renowned artists and industry experts who attended the panel highlighted the positive potential AI tools have for creators, and the exciting AI revolution that is already happening cannot be stopped. Generative AI can extend the frontiers of human creation,
enhance artistic expression, and deliver to creators new licensing opportunities and revenue streams. But AI also requires smart regulation. The industry needs to come together to prevent AI from undermining human creativity and threatening the livelihoods of creators.

In the discussion Dr. G.R. Raghavendra – Senior Consultant IPR, DPIIT, former Joint Secretary, Govt. of India, Achille Forler Founder Silk Road Communications, João Kruss Gomes Chairman MACA, Mayur Puri – Lyricist & Screenwriter alongside moderator Benjamin NG, Regional Director for Asia Pacific, CISAC shed light on leveraging AI while ensuring regulatory frameworks uphold creators’ rights. “The integration of AI in music creation presents boundless opportunities for artists globally. It’s imperative to develop robust regulations to safeguard creators’ rights in this evolving landscape,” mentioned lyricist, IPRS Board Member and APMA Vice Chairman Mayur Puri.

Commenting on the same, Dr. G.R. Raghavendra – Senior Consultant IPR, DPIIT, former Joint Secretary, Govt. of India said, “In the vast landscape of AI, it’s important to dispel the notion that it’s inherently risky. Throughout the course of technological evolution, every leap forward has been met with the creation of rules and protections to ensure responsible usage. AI, such as ChatGPT, is essentially a machine that can’t replicate the depth of human abilities—it’s not that creative or original. When we talk about using someone’s work, whether in AI or any other field, seeking permission and offering fair compensation is not just a courtesy; it’s a fundamental aspect of ethical practice. In the grand scheme of technological advancements, maintaining fairness and ethical standards becomes the cornerstone of integrating AI responsibly into our lives. So, as we navigate this exciting era of innovation, let’s keep in mind the importance of consent, fair compensation, and ethical considerations in the realm of AI.”

The second panel, Fair Value of Music in the Streaming Economy delved into the streaming landscape, emphasizing the need for creators to receive equitable returns from this burgeoning market. Discussions led by leading creators, legal experts, and industry veterans Dhinraj Shetty – MD of Sony Music Publishing (India), Swanand Kirkire – Lyricist, Singer & Actor, Irfan Aulia – Musician, Managing Director, Massive Music, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Collective Management Organization Wahana Musik Indonesia, Notapol Srichomkwan – Songwriter and chairman MCT, Tarsame Mittal – Music Entrepreneur, moderated by Satoshi Watanabe of CISAC, highlighted the necessity for adaptations and government interventions to ensure a fair music ecosystem.

The third panel, The Future of Female Representation & Contribution in the Music Industry, featured discussions by Lyricist and Screenwriter Kausar Munir, Music Composer Sneha Khanwalkar, Composer and Music Producer Merlyn D’Souza, Music Composer and Producer Hiral Viradia, and Nanni Singh – Chief Executive ShowcaseEvents, moderated by poet and lyricist Irshaad Kamil, on gender dynamics in the music industry. The panel passionately advocated for breaking down stereotypes, fostering inclusivity, and creating a diverse and inclusive musical landscape.

“The industry must actively foster an environment that embraces diversity and empowers female creators. It’s time to dismantle barriers and create more opportunities for women in music”, stated eminent lyricist and screenwriter Kausar Munir.

Javed Akhtar, legendary lyricist, screenwriter, poet, and Chairman of IPRS, expressed his satisfaction with the event’s success, stating, “The International Music Creators Seminar 2023 underscores the power of collaborative innovation. The recently established collaboration with KOMCA ushers in a transformative period, encouraging a dynamic interchange of creation between India and Korea. Our commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable music industry where creator rights are safeguarded and creativity is nurtured was highlighted through stimulating panel discussions. Our narrative revolves around breaking down barriers, creating opportunities, and envisioning a world where creators and creativity flourish. We look forward to bringing such platforms to India and elevate our artists.”

The International Music Creators Seminar provided a platform to underscore the importance of cross-border partnerships and smart regulation for a vibrant and equitable creative landscape.

Warehouses and office security: better safe than sorry
Warehouses and office buildings face numerous security threats, including intrusion, graffiti, and theft. Network speakers integrated with video security can deter potential incidents before they occur by broadcasting warnings to unauthorized individuals. By delivering messages like “You are trespassing, please leave the area,” potential intruders are immediately alerted to their unauthorized presence. Also, via real-time two-way audio alerts from a centralized location, any dubious parties can be informed of their prohibited presence in specified areas. This audio and video integration bolsters security procedures, safeguarding essential assets.

Critical facilities: precise, timely protection
For large, high-secure facilities like airports or power plants, the complexity of threats escalates to zone violations, sabotage, and even terrorism. Video and audio linkage is especially important in these scenarios. Imagine an airport with extensive fencing covering a significant distance. Thermal cameras are positioned to effectively detect any unauthorized intrusions, even during nighttime hours.
Upon detection, PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras automatically zero in on the exact location of the potential intrusion. In addition to this, the integration of network speakers act as a deterrent, utilizing pre-recorded messages or direct communication to discourage criminals. However, challenges persist as intruders may attempt to divert attention or trigger false alarms to obstruct security. To address this, the cameras employ advanced intelligent algorithms that accurately distinguish genuine threats from false alarms. By doing so, this comprehensive system ensures top-notch security in expansive outdoor spaces through accurate situation assessment and efficient response.

Integrating audio and video with Hikvision

Hikvision enhances customers’ security experience by integrating its diverse video products with network speakers.

  •   In live monitoring situations, Hikvision cameras bring unique imaging benefits through advanced technologies like DarkFighter and ColorVu, which excel in low-light situations. Furthermore, Hikvision enhances active protection with precise alarms and rapid responses. For example, Smart Hybrid Light  technology enables cameras to trigger visible light when a vehicle or a person appears, capturing pivotal details in vivid color. This precision allows network speakers to optimally deter intruders, as clear vision ensures accurate alarm activation and effective protective measures.
  •  In response to potential threats, Hikvision network speakers deliver pre- recorded or live messages, providing superior incident control to cameras alone. Hikvision speakers support up to 124db acoustic pressure, covering distances up to 300 meters. They can hold up to 1000 audio materials, allowing customization options for tackling vandalism, intrusion, and break- ins.

Hikvision network speakers and related devices can be managed all-in-one with Hikvision software. The combination of video alarm triggering and audible warning, followed by live video feeds for verification, streamlines security process automation. With audio and video integration, feel at ease knowing your safety is in good hands.
