Tenable and Siemens Energy Expand Collaboration on OT Cybersecurity

India (October 27, 2023) — Tenable®, Inc. the Exposure Management company, today announced that it has expanded its partnership with Siemens Energy to further secure operational technology (OT) environments in the energy sector. Building on years of collaboration, Siemens Energy will integrate Tenable OT Security into their Omnivise T3000 control system as a network intrusion detection system (NIDS), in addition to already leveraging Tenable OT Security for asset discovery and vulnerability management. Siemens Energy’s decision to bring Tenable into this flagship offering joins existing collaboration on their recently rebranded cybersecurity service offering, Omnivise OT Security, powered by Tenable.

Tenable and Siemens Energy’s collaborations bring together cybersecurity and OT knowledge bases to address a key challenge for the energy sector: securing an ever-changing asset base that bridges the digital and physical world. Energy sector worksites typically involve unique configurations of equipment from many manufacturers and increasingly involve a fluctuating set of networked digital devices. If companies fail to keep up with the onslaught of new devices and new threats, they can end up with cybersecurity blind spots and increased risk in the physical and digital systems that produce and move electricity and fuel.

Zscaler ThreatLabz Finds a 400 Percent Increase in IoT and OT Malware Attacks Year-over-Year

Bengaluru, October 27, 2023 – Zscaler, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZS), the leader in cloud security, announced today the release of the ZscalerTM ThreatLabz 2023 Enterprise IoT and OT Threat Report. This year’s report provides an in-depth look at malware activity over a six-month period, analyzing approximately 300,000 blocked attacks on IoT devices secured by the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange™ platform.

The high number of attacks on IoT devices represents a 400% increase in malware compared to the previous year. The increasing frequency of malware attacks targeting IoT devices is a significant concern for OT security, as the mobility of malware can facilitate movement across different networks, potentially endangering critical OT infrastructure.

ThreatLabz focused on understanding IoT device activity and attributes via device fingerprinting and analyzing the IoT malware threat landscape. As more industries, organizations and individuals continue to rely on internet-connected devices, the threat from malware and legacy vulnerabilities increases. By adopting a zero-trust architecture, organizations can gain visibility into IoT device traffic and minimize IoT security risks.

“Weak enforcement of security standards for IoT device manufacturers coupled with the proliferation of shadow IoT devices at the enterprise level poses a significant threat to global organizations. Often, threat actors target ‘unmanaged and unpatched’ devices to gain an initial foothold into the environment,” said Deepen Desai, Global CISO and Head of Security Research, Zscaler. “To address these challenges, I encourage organizations to enforce zero trust principles when securing IoT and OT devices – never trust, always verify, and assume breach. Organizations can eliminate lateral movement risk by utilizing continuous discovery and monitoring processes to segment these devices.”

Consistent growth in attacks

With the steady adoption of IoT and personal connected devices, the report found an increase of over 400% in IoT malware attacks year-over-year. The growth in cyber threats demonstrates cyber criminals persistence and ability to adapt to evolving conditions in launching IoT malware attacks.

Additionally, research indicates that cybercriminals are targeting legacy vulnerabilities, with 34 of the 39 most popular IoT exploits specifically directed at vulnerabilities that have existed for over three years. The Mirai and Gafgyt malware families continue to account for 66% of attack payloads, creating botnets from infected IoT devices that are then used to launch denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against lucrative businesses.

Botnet-driven distributed DDoS attacks are responsible for billions of dollars in financial losses across industries around the globe. In addition, DDoS attacks pose a risk to OT by potentially disrupting critical industrial processes and even endangering human lives.

Manufacturing top targeted industry – Education being taught a lesson

Manufacturing and retail accounted for nearly 52% of IoT device traffic, with 3D printers, geolocation trackers, industrial control devices, automotive multimedia systems, data collection terminals, and payment terminals sending the majority of signals over digital networks. However, the quantity of device traffic has created opportunities for cybercriminals, and the manufacturing sector now sees an average of 6,000 IoT malware attacks every week.

Moreover, these substantial IoT malware attacks can disrupt critical OT processes, which are integral in many industrial manufacturing plants like automotive, heavy manufacturing, and plastic & rubber.

This creates long-term challenges for security teams at manufacturing businesses but also demonstrates that industrial IoT holds a substantial lead in adopting unique IoT devices (nearly three times more than other sectors). This increase is critical as manufacturing organizations continue adopting IoT tools for automation and digitization of legacy infrastructure.

Education is another sector that suffered from outsized attention from cybercriminals in 2023, with the propagation of unsecured as well as shadow IoT devices within school networks providing attackers with easier access points.

The wealth of personal data stored on their networks has made educational institutions particularly attractive targets, leaving students and administrations vulnerable. In fact, the report found IoT malware attacks in the education sector increased by nearly 1000%.

The United States and Mexico are the most targeted

Findings show that the United States is a top target for IoT malware authors with 96% of all IoT malware distributed from compromised IoT devices in the United States.

In 2023, Mexico experienced the most infections, with 46% of all IoT malware infections. In fact, three of the top four most infected countries (Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia) are all Latin American countries.

Safeguarding against IoT/OT attacks with the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange™

The Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange platform is a holistic approach to zero trust security, verifying identity and context, applying access controls, and enforcing policies before brokering a secure connection between a device and an application from anywhere, and on any network.

Zscaler protects enterprise networks using the Zero Trust Platform by leveraging Zscaler Internet Access™ (ZIA™), whose identity-driven access and risk-based, comprehensive security protects the exchange of telemetry between IoT devices and corporate networks.

Zscaler protects the security of enterprise networks with the Zero Trust Exchange platform, which utilizes Zscaler Privileged Remote Access to provide remote workers and third-party vendors with clientless remote desktop access to sensitive RDP, SSH, and VNC production systems without having to install a client on unmanaged devices or log into jump hosts and VPNs. This means remote employees or third parties can access and service OT devices without compromising the security of the network or the critical infrastructure it powers.

To download your full copy of the report, please visit Zscaler ThreatLabz 2023 Enterprise IoT and OT Threat Report.

Methodology

The research methodology for this report includes analysis of device logs from a multitude of sources and industry verticals between January and June 2023.

The report uses data derived from customer deployments that connect to the Zscaler global security cloud, which processes over 500 trillion daily signals and blocks 9 billion threats and policy violations per day, with over 250,000 daily security updates.

Over 60 lakh lives positively impacted by Tata Motors' CSR initiatives in the past decade

Bengaluru, October 27, 2023: Tata Motors, India’s leading automobile company, today released its 9th Annual CSR Report, highlighting its extensive efforts towards addressing some of India’s most critical and social challenges across the domains of Health (Aarogya), Education (Vidyadhanam), Employability (Kaushalya) and Environment (Vasundhara). Collectively, these efforts have benefitted more than 60 lakh lives over the past 10 years, with a significant percentage of beneficiaries belonging to the marginalised communities.

In 2014, Tata Motors designed and adopted a comprehensive 4-pillar approach to harmonise its CSR initiatives across the country. Capabilities, experience and expertise acquired by individual units and teams in each identified fields led to the creation and execution of focused interventions with clearly defined outcomes and remarkable results. By harmonising programmes across locations, leveraging digital technologies, fostering partnerships with diverse stakeholders, and strengthening trust with the communities, the company effectively surpassed its projected impact.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vinod Kulkarni, Head of CSR at Tata Motors, said, “At Tata Motors, our CSR efforts are deeply rooted in our unwavering commitment to promote inclusive growth, thus contributing to nation-building. We are humbled to have positively impacted millions of lives through our efforts. In fact, several of our CSR ideas and programmes have grown to become marquee projects, worthy of being emulated as models for community development. Using the novel approach of ‘More for Less for More’, we have narrowed the gap between our aspirations and the available resources, achieving pan-India scale for numerous projects. Our commitment to advancing our CSR agenda remains steadfast, as we strive to create a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable India. By meticulous planning and effectively utilising our financial and human resources, we aspire to make a progressively greater impact with each passing year.”

Here’s a quick glance into the company’s select marquee projects in the areas of Health, Education, Employability, and Environment, that have made a significant impact in terms of convergence, scale and reach, over the last ten years.

Addressing Malnutrition Through Community-based Interventions

Tata Motors has made significant strides in addressing the issue of malnutrition among children. By shifting its focus from institutional-based clinical approaches to community-based health interventions, the company has been able to create a sustainable impact. Despite having high levels of severely acute malnourished and moderately acute malnourished children in some of the targeted states, the company has successfully moved more than 91% of malnourished children to healthy zones in the past decade.

Empowering Leprosy Patients with Early Detection and Care

Tata Motors has been actively involved in raising awareness about leprosy and providing early detection and care to affected individuals. Through annual door-to-door awareness campaigns in hard-to-reach villages, the company has screened thousands of households, identified and treated over 4,000 leprosy patients. The company’s community-based Leprosy programme in Jharkhand, a state with a high incidence of the disease, is the first of its kind initiative in the country to eradicate the disease.

Bridging the Educational Gap through Digital Empowerment

Tata Motors’ flagship remote learning programme, ENABLE, has helped talented students from over 550 Jawahar Navodya Vidyalayas access resources and guidance for admission to the top engineering and medical institutions. Over the past decade, this programme has benefitted over 20,000 aspirants from underprivileged backgrounds, many of whom have secured admissions in prestigious institutions such as in IITs, AIIMS and government-run engineering and Medical colleges. Additionally, support classes are being conducted for students in grades IX and X in state-run government schools, utilising both digital and in-person modes. This approach has proven to be effective in improving the pass rates and academic performance. Notably, this model has been successfully implemented in about 200 schools under the Thane and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Maharashtra.

Skilling Unemployed Youth for a Brighter Future

The LEAP programme, part of the Kaushalya initiative by Tata Motors, focuses on skilling unemployed youth, especially in Automotive courses and facilitating their entry into the workforce. This programme has also enabled young women to overcome stereotype barriers and attain financial independence. Over the past decade, this skilling initiative has grown from 2 to 60 institutes. About 85% of the trainees have secured placement with an average salary ranging between Rs. 15000 to 18000, thereby creating a positive impact on their lives and the economy.

Restoring and Expanding Rural and Urban Forest Cover

With the objective of creating sustainable livelihoods for the farmers through Agro-Forestry plantation and transforming unused land into cultivable areas by prioritising government convergence, the company has successfully planted nearly one million trees, ensuring the survival of over 90% of them. In FY24, an additional one million trees are planned to be planted.

In collaboration with the Forest Department (GOI) and TERRE Policy Center, a significant expanse of 16.5 hectares of forest land in Warje (urban Pune) has been reforested. Bad bots use residential IPs to appear human and evade defenses, reveals Barracuda’s Threat Spotlight Report

India, 27th October 2023: Barracuda, a leading provider of cloud-first security solutions, has unveiled a new Threat Spotlight that shows how in the first six months of 2023, bad – or malicious – bots used residential IP addresses to launch attacks without being caught by the security blocks put on known malicious IPs. In many cases, the people who used or were later allocated those IPs ended up in “CAPTCHA hell,” unable to pass checks from Google or Cloudflare because their IP triggered a red flag as having been used for malicious activity.

Bots are software programs that move around the web performing automated tasks like search engine crawling. Barracuda researchers track the prevalence and behavior of good and bad bots from year to year.

bot-threat-spotlight-chart-3

Data for the first half of 2023 shows that nearly half (48%) of total global internet traffic was made up of bots, and most of this was down to bad bots. These complex computer programs are designed to cause mischief and harm, at speeds and volumes that human attackers couldn’t match.

And while in 2021, the bad bot landscape was dominated by swarms of “retail bots,” sent out to hunt for scarce and sought-after sneakers and toys to resell at a profit, in 2023, bad bots are often being used for more advanced attacks.

Armed with millions of common username and passwords, the bad bots are being sent out across the internet with the aim of compromising email accounts – particularly those they can reach through vulnerable application programming interfaces (APIs) – by bashing them with countless combinations of usernames/passwords until they get the one that works.

APIs are a growing target for cyberattack because they are relatively under-protected and used extensively for automated processes and communications. Examples of applications that use APIs to access emails and inboxes include email marketing applications that send and track bulk or personalized emails to potential or existing customers, as well as applications to manage, verify, and automate emails.

“For the organizations targeted by these bots, a combination of under-secured APIs, weak authentication and access policies, and a lack of bot-specific security measures – such as limiting the volume and speed of inbound traffic leave them vulnerable to attack,” said Tushar Richabadas, Principal Product Marketing Manager, Applications and Cloud Security at Barracuda. “Organizations can be overwhelmed due to the sheer number of solutions required to stop bots, but the good news is that solutions are consolidating into Web Application and API Protection (WAAP) services that identifies and stops bad bots.”

The research also shows that in the first half of 2023, North America was the source of 72% of bad bot traffic. Roughly two-thirds (67%) of bad bot traffic came from hosting providers, including the two large public clouds: AWS and Azure, which skews the geographic data toward North America. The next most prevalent regions are the United Arab Emirates (12%), Saudi Arabia (6%), Qatar (5%), and India (5%).
