CATL Unveils Dual-Electric Range Extension Battery to Accelerate Electric Heavy-Duty Truck Adoption
BEIJING, Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — CATL today unveiled the innovative dual-electric range extension battery and the latest generation of heavy-duty battery-swapping solution to accelerate the electrification of road freight transportation.
Competition in electric heavy-duty trucking is moving beyond technical specifications toward full-lifecycle value. While battery swapping has made energy replenishment faster and more predictable, concerns about battery utilization, operating costs and residual vehicle value continue to affect fleet economics.
To address these challenges, CATL combines its dual-electric range extension battery with QIJI’s strategy of standardization, new infrastructure and a full commercial ecosystem, bringing battery swapping and industry-wide collaboration together to accelerate heavy-duty truck electrification.
A Dual-Electric Approach to Range Extension
CATL’s dual-electric range extension battery combines two independent yet complementary battery systems.
The main battery uses QIJI’s standardized chassis-mounted swappable battery to maximize efficiency. A behind-the-cab range-extension power system, currently equipped with a 77kWh battery capable of 3C charging, provides backup power. Together, the systems maintain uninterrupted power delivery and provide redundancy for demanding operating conditions.

- Dual-System Power Redundancy
In conventional battery-swapping trucks, drivers often return for a swap with unused capacity because they are reluctant to run the battery low. Backup power from the range-extension battery increases the main battery’s depth of discharge (DOD) from approximately 70% to over 95%, allowing it to be returned at less than 5% state of charge (SOC). At this threshold, CATL’s seamless switching technology transfers power delivery to the range-extension battery within milliseconds, maintaining a continuous and stable power supply.
- “1+X” Architecture and Independent Upgrades
The system uses a “1+X” architecture. One standardized main battery maintains compatibility with the QIJI battery-swapping network, while the range-extension battery can be customized for specific conditions with options including ultra-high energy density, low-temperature resistance for cold climates, or ultra-high power.
The two battery systems can be developed and upgraded independently to meet their respective technical and operational requirements.
- Flexible Leasing and Battery Asset Management
The independently owned on-board range-extension battery stays with the vehicle as an asset throughout its service life, reducing reliance on immediate access to a swapping station. The main battery can be leased according to seasonal freight demand, helping fleets reduce rental costs during quieter periods and manage battery assets more flexibly.
This architecture combines the benefits of standardization with flexible vehicle configurations, making electric heavy-duty trucks more practical and economically viable across a wider range of applications.
QIJI Builds a Shared Battery Swapping Ecosystem
QIJI complements these improvements with a three-pillar strategy of standardization, new infrastructure and a full commercial ecosystem. It seeks to speed heavy-duty truck electrification with a value-chain ecosystem co-created by all stakeholders, where benefits are shared collectively.

- Standardization Supports Wider Adoption
To accommodate a wider range of truck models and operating conditions, QIJI has introduced the 260# (432 kWh) and 300# (513 kWh) standardized battery-swapping blocks alongside the existing 75# block.
The system enables battery swaps in just five minutes, with a 99.99% first-time success rate, helping fleets minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
QIJI has also pioneered a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model in which customers pay for the net energy charged rather than the energy discharged. This allows customers to retain the value of energy recovered through regenerative braking, reducing per-kWh battery rental costs for users on basic plans by up to 20%. Flexible battery leasing options allow customers to tailor rental periods to their needs, from second-hand vehicle transitions to seasonal demand. This will minimize idle costs and offer more flexible options for off-season downtime, further helping fleets manage operating costs.
- New Infrastructure Improves Resource Efficiency
QIJI aims to make better use of four critical resources in long-haul freight: time, land, payload capacity and grid electricity. Rapid battery swapping reduces waiting times, while efficient station layouts serve more vehicles within the same footprint. Battery capacity is matched to transport needs, and centralized, coordinated charging makes better use of grid electricity. These measures aim to improve both resource efficiency and operational returns.
CATL plans to deploy 900 battery-swapping stations by the end of 2026 and 2,000 by 2027, with a long-term target of 10,000 stations nationwide in collaboration with its partners.
By connecting major freight corridors through a coordinated swapping network, QIJI aims to improve the efficiency and commercial viability of electric heavy-duty trucking.
- A Commercial Ecosystem Supports the Full Vehicle Lifecycle
QIJI connects truck manufacturers, financial institutions, insurers, channel partners and aftermarket service providers across the vehicle lifecycle, from purchase and operation to maintenance and resale, working together to build a comprehensive ecosystem of integrated products and services.
QIJI has introduced two partnership models: Battery Asset Service Partners and Energy Replenishment Service Partners. These models allow partners to participate in battery asset services and energy replenishment, extending their role beyond one-off vehicle sales to ongoing operations.
Through this integrated ecosystem, QIJI aims to turn the costs of the low-carbon transition into new growth opportunities, enabling stakeholders across the value chain to share the benefits of the new-energy era.

“The combination of the dual-electric range extension battery and QIJI battery swapping offers the best solution for electrifying heavy-duty trucks,” said Jesse Yang, CEO of QIJI Energy.
New Batteries and Industry Partnerships
The initiative has also gained commercial traction, with agreements signed for 13,000 units at the event.
Aside from the dual-electric solution, CATL also introduced a new lineup of heavy-duty truck batteries tailored to different vehicle configurations and operating requirements at the event. The lineup includes rear-mounted ultra-light and ultra-thin batteries for weight- and space-sensitive applications, as well as chassis-mounted solutions for short-haul and long-haul operations.

Blockchain.com Launches Options Trading for Eligible Users
New Trading Account feature makes it simpler to trade short-term market views with defined risk
VALLETTA, Malta, Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Blockchain.com, a global leader in crypto services for retail and institutional users, today announced the launch of options trading within its Trading Account, giving eligible users a simple and intuitive way to trade short-term views on where crypto markets are headed.
Options give traders greater flexibility to express a market view based on both price direction and timing. Blockchain.com is bringing that functionality to its consumer app experience to make options more accessible, while preserving the defined risk structure of buy options.
The new experience turns a traditionally complex trading process into a straightforward flow. Users select an expiry date and target price, enter their trade amount, and review the trade before confirming. Blockchain.com then translates that view into the corresponding call or put option, allowing users to focus on their market view rather than the mechanics of structuring the trade.
“Options give traders another way to act on where they believe the market is headed, but across a wide range of providers and apps, the experience is often difficult to navigate,” said Taro Ugen, VP of Consumer at Blockchain.com. “We’ve designed the Blockchain.com options experience around the decisions that matter: where traders think the market is going, when they think it will get there, and how much they are prepared to put behind that view. We take care of the complexity in the background, so users get a simpler way to access a powerful trading service with clearly defined risk that augments their investment toolkit.”
At launch, eligible users can buy call and put options on Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Solana (SOL), Hyperliquid (HYPE), Avalanche (AVAX), XRP and TRON (TRX). Live market prices are shown directly within the trading experience. Trades are funded upfront in USDC from the Blockchain.com Trading Account. Because users are buying options rather than trading on margin, the amount paid upfront represents the maximum potential loss.
The launch of options trading follows Blockchain.com’s introduction of perpetual futures trading earlier this year. Options will initially be available with expiries of up to one week and must be held through settlement. The product is available to eligible users in supported jurisdictions and is subject to applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
About Blockchain.com:

Project Eleven and Relm Insurance Partner to Explore Quantum Risk in Digital Asset Insurance
The first partnership to explore post-quantum security as a factor in pricing digital asset insurance.
NEW YORK, Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Project Eleven, the post-quantum security company for digital assets, today announced Relm Insurance as a development partner for Strongpoint, its flagship institutional custody product. The collaboration will explore how an institution’s post-quantum security controls could be evaluated within digital asset insurance underwriting, helping both companies better understand how quantum readiness may influence future assessments of digital asset risk.
As quantum computing advances, a sufficiently powerful machine could derive private keys from exposed public keys and compromise digital assets. Institutions need custody infrastructure capable of adapting its cryptography before such a machine becomes available. Strongpoint is built for that transition. The platform combines classical and post-quantum signing and separates institutional controls from the cryptography layer, enabling institutions to replace signing algorithms while preserving approval rules and audit history.
“Every institution holding digital assets will eventually need to prepare for post-quantum cryptography. The open question is whether that transition happens on the institution’s schedule or under pressure,” said Alex Pruden, CEO and Co-Founder of Project Eleven. “Insurance plays a critical role in how markets assess and manage risk. We believe there is an opportunity for institutions that invest in stronger post-quantum defenses to eventually see that reflected in how their risk is evaluated. Working with Relm is an important first step toward understanding what that could look like in practice.”
Exploring Post-Quantum Risk in Insurance Underwriting
Through the development partnership, Relm and Project Eleven will explore how post-quantum security could be assessed within existing digital asset insurance frameworks. Areas of investigation include key exposure, signing systems, transaction approvals, migration readiness, and third-party dependencies.
Relm will also provide input into the design and development of Strongpoint, helping Project Eleven understand how institutional custody infrastructure can better support insurance underwriting and risk assessment. This collaboration will help inform Strongpoint’s approach to security controls, auditability, and the evidence institutions may need to demonstrate their post-quantum readiness to insurers.
Joseph Ziolkowski, founder and CEO of Relm Insurance, said, “Insuring exposures across the digital asset ecosystem requires underwriters to anticipate how risks will evolve. Quantum computing is a clear example of an emerging threat that should shape the way we assess risk today. Our work with Project Eleven will explore how institutions identify their exposure, demonstrate effective controls, and prepare for the transition to post-quantum readiness. Bringing underwriting expertise into that process early can help lay the groundwork for insurance solutions that support confidence, resilience, and continued growth in digital assets.”
The collaboration is exploratory, with a focus on developing a shared understanding of post-quantum risk and the controls that could help mitigate it. Any future implications for underwriting or insurance premiums would be subject to further evaluation and Relm’s independent underwriting processes.

Metabolon Announces New Bioinformatics Application to Translate Metabolomic Biomarkers into Actionable Multiomic Hypotheses
New bioinformatics application combines curated metabolite-protein knowledge, advanced network algorithms, interactive exploration, and optional AI interpretation to generate clearer mechanistic hypotheses
MORRISVILLE, N.C., Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Metabolon, Inc., the global leader in metabolomics solutions advancing life sciences research, diagnostics, therapeutics, and precision medicine, today announced Splash & Ripple, a new bioinformatics application within the company’s Integrated Bioinformatics Platform. Splash & Ripple helps researchers translate metabolomic biomarkers into candidate protein mechanisms and actionable multiomic hypotheses.
Metabolomics captures biochemical activity close to phenotype, revealing the combined effects of genes, protein activity, disease, treatment, and environmental influences. While this proximity makes metabolomics highly informative, it can also complicate interpretation. A changed metabolite may be associated with numerous enzymes, transporters, receptors, and binding proteins, while conventional pathway enrichment often provides broad biological context without identifying the specific mechanisms researchers should investigate next. Moving from a metabolomics result to a focused mechanistic hypothesis can therefore require extensive manual research across scientific literature, biological databases, and multiple omics datasets. This process can take months, even for teams with specialist expertise, creating a significant barrier to realizing the full value of metabolomics.
Splash & Ripple brings this work into a single exploratory environment. Starting with a set of metabolomic biomarkers, the application identifies associated proteins and traces their relationships through high-confidence interaction networks. Splash & Ripple prioritizes candidate proteins based on the strength and concentration of supporting metabolite evidence, allowing researchers to identify mechanisms supported by multiple biochemical signals and examine the evidence behind those relationships.
“Metabolomics gives researchers an exceptionally powerful view of the biology that governs the phenotypes researchers care about, but acting on that information has required considerable time and specialist expertise,” said Ro Hastie, President and CEO of Metabolon. “Splash & Ripple enables scientists to explore candidate protein mechanisms immediately, understand why they have been prioritized, and develop more focused multiomic hypotheses. Combined with our optional AI interpretation capability, Splash & Ripple can accelerate work that might otherwise take months and help researchers determine the most valuable next experiment.”
At the foundation of Splash & Ripple is Metabolon’s proprietary Metabolite Affiliated Proteins (MAP) Database, an exclusive, scientist-curated knowledge resource that connects measured metabolites to enzymes, transporters, receptors, and binding proteins through biologically meaningful relationships. Unlike conventional pathway-centered analyses, the MAP Database extends beyond predefined annotations to reveal mechanistic connections that may otherwise remain hidden. Built on Metabolon’s decades of metabolomics expertise and supported by scientific literature and biological databases, this proprietary knowledge layer provides a uniquely powerful foundation for translating biochemical signals into biological hypotheses. Splash & Ripple applies advanced network algorithms to these curated relationships to identify proteins most closely associated with observed metabolite changes, connect multiple biochemical signals, and help researchers prioritize the mechanisms and experiments most likely to advance discovery.
Additional Splash & Ripple supporting features include:
- An optional AI-assisted interpretation module that evaluates promising protein–metabolite relationships against literature, genetic associations, interaction evidence, and phenotypic context to generate citation-supported hypotheses for scientific review and refinement. Because AI is separate from the core analysis, organizations can use Splash & Ripple without AI when project requirements restrict AI usage. In either configuration, outputs support hypothesis generation and experimental validation rather than establishing causality.
- Access to Metabolon’s scientific services team to help evaluate hypotheses, assess supporting evidence, and translate findings into actionable research plans, with support available based on project needs and scope.
- An interactive interface that lets researchers navigate among biomarkers, candidate proteins, and supporting network relationships to investigate potential mechanisms underlying observed biochemical changes.
Splash & Ripple is part of Metabolon’s Integrated Bioinformatics Platform, where researchers can interpret metabolomics alongside genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, clinical, and other biological data. By linking metabolomic biomarkers to candidate protein mechanisms using curated metabolite–protein knowledge, advanced network analysis, interactive exploration, and optional AI interpretation, Splash & Ripple helps researchers quickly develop focused mechanistic hypotheses, prioritize downstream experiments, and extract greater scientific and commercial value from metabolomics and multiomics data.

llm-d 1.0 Advances Open, Cost-Efficient AI Inference for Production Scale
- llm-d 1.0 consolidates a hardened core for distributed inference validated for day 2 production deployments that helps organizations improve AI serving efficiency and scale enterprise workloads.
- llm-d is broadly adopted and trusted by frontier model labs, hyperscalers and neoclouds, hardware accelerators, and major enterprises, with recent demonstrations showing up to five to 10 times cost reductions for context-heavy agentic workloads1 and three times greater output throughput.2
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Today, llm-d project contributors announced the release of llm-d 1.0, a major milestone for the open source project designed to help organizations deploy and scale large language model inference more efficiently across modern infrastructure. Founded in 2025 by Red Hat, IBM (NYSE: IBM), Google Cloud, CoreWeave and NVIDIA, and now governed by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), llm-d plays a key role in the open foundation for enterprises deploying AI at scale in production.
As organizations race to put AI into production, many are discovering that running AI at scale can be as challenging and expensive as building the models themselves. Organizations need a way to deliver responsive experiences for users, support agentic workloads, and maximize utilization of increasingly scarce compute resources. llm-d 1.0 is built to address these challenges through intelligent distributed inference capabilities to facilitate improvements in performance, increases in throughput and help organizations gain greater control over the economics of AI serving.
Turning Innovation into Production Reality
With the rise of agentic AI, new types of workloads are placing a different kind of stress on infrastructure systems. Agentic workloads continually access and reuse vast amounts of context while supporting parallel agents that can generate unpredictable bursts of activity. Managing that context often consumes more resources than generating the final output itself, making latency, throughput, memory efficiency and infrastructure costs critical factors in realizing AI ROI. llm-d already delivers hardware heterogeneity and advanced inference capabilities out of the box for complex infrastructure environments, as well as prefix-cache and load-aware routing, KV cache offloading, prefill/decode disaggregation, wide expert parallelism and batch and async inference — across multiple model servers, including vLLM and SGLang.
llm-d 1.0 is engineered to bring that performance to the realities of Day 2 operations and the ongoing work of running inference in production: serving multiple tenants, balancing competing priorities, providing with zero downtime features and supporting emerging agentic workloads, all within one suite of co-designed components that compose into a platform. New capabilities in 1.0 include:
- Multi-tenant quality of service — Priority and fairness-aware flow control helps latency-sensitive requests, and bursty agent workloads share a fleet without starving one another.
- Zero-downtime operations — Router high availability with hot standby and rolling updates keep traffic flowing through upgrades and planned maintenance. Management of prefill/decode replicas as one logical unit, with coordinated rollouts and lockstep upgrades—making disaggregated serving practical in production.
- A stable foundation to build on — A v1 configuration API and a hardened request path, validated across clouds and accelerators, give adopters a release they can standardize on.
- Agent-aware serving — Session-aware routing keeps multi-turn conversations close to their cached context, while turn-priority scheduling and native Responses API state support help agents reuse context across turns and reduce recomputation.
The result is infrastructure that can support diverse AI workloads, ranging from latency-sensitive user interactions to large-scale autonomous agent workflows, without forcing organizations to choose between responsiveness and efficiency.
Growing Ecosystem Momentum
llm-d is already being used across a growing ecosystem of model developers, cloud providers, infrastructure vendors and enterprise users. Today, the project includes more than 500 contributors from over 25 organizations collaborating on the future of distributed AI serving and helping build common foundations across the AI infrastructure stack.
Core users including organizations running large-scale distributed inference, frontier model developers optimizing inference stacks and cloud providers serving multi-tenant AI endpoints have all seen measurable benefit from deploying llm-d.
In one recent use case, open frontier models and llm-d enabled IBM Research to explore quantum error correction hardware at 11.5 times lower inference cost than an all-proprietary configuration.3 Researchers reported a prefix-cache hit rate of approximately 98% and a blended serving cost of about $0.11 per million tokens.
In a separate recent demonstration using benchmark workloads, researchers showed that llm-d could efficiently serve large mixture-of-experts models for agentic workloads. Researchers used llm-d to deploy GLM 5.2, an approximately 753-billion-parameter open-weight model, on widely deployed NVIDIA GPUs, demonstrating how enterprises can use existing GPU fleets to serve frontier-class AI at scale. On a workload with hundreds of agentic sessions running in parallel, the deployment delivered over 6.6 million output tokens per minute at peak on agentic benchmarks, serving up to 3,000 concurrent coding agents with zero preemptions. At current cloud rental rates, this deployment led to costs that would have been 5 to 10 times less per token than equivalent commercial API pricing, with the largest savings on the input-heavy traffic patterns typical of agentic workloads, highlighting how llm-d can save resources and costs for enterprises deploying AI in production at scale.4
Through its CNCF governance model and broad industry participation, llm-d aims to accelerate innovation while providing organizations with an open alternative for managing increasingly complex AI infrastructure. Looking to the future, the community will continue adapting to new hardware and models as they emerge, evolving the software stack to achieve peak performance across new architectures. “JetBrains has been working with llm-d since its early releases, and it is great to see the project reach 1.0. llm-d now runs in production behind our new Junie Lite plan and serves a significant share of its traffic. Our traffic ranges from long agentic coding sessions to short requests, and predicted latency-based scheduling was straightforward to enable and keeps latency consistent across that mix. Junie Lite brings our AI coding agent to developers at no cost, and llm-d helps make that possible by letting us serve more requests per GPU at lower cost and with faster responses. We have enjoyed working with the llm-d team and congratulate them on this release.”
Mathis Felardos, Lucas Fernandes-Martins and Nikhil Thomas (Mistral, Inference Engineers and llm-d contributors)
“Serving frontier models across interactive applications and high-volume APIs means handling steep traffic spikes without letting bursty workloads degrade latency for priority customers. With llm-d’s prefix-cache-aware routing, flow control and disaggregated serving support we can enforce strict priority bands across our commercial tiers, automatically holding or shedding lower-priority requests when pools saturate so paid traffic meets our latency SLOs. Mistral is a proud supporter of open-source software, and we will continue to contribute back to llm-d and DisaggregatedSet projects.”
Nishchaie Khanna, Sr Director of Engineering, AI Platform, Roblox
