Shyam Steel and Macaw Paints extend post-flood relief support to affected communities in Assam

Sivasagar, Aug 19: In response to the disruption caused by recent floods in Upper Assam, Shyam Steel and Macaw Paints have come together to support affected communities in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts through a post-disaster relief initiative. The programme focused on addressing some of the immediate household, hygiene and essential daily-use needs of families as communities began the process of recovery.

Shyam Steel and Macaw Paints extend post-flood relief support to affected communities in Assam

The effort behind Together We Rebuild, covered 10 villages across the two districts and benefited around 1,500 families. The relief effort was planned with a focus on communities that had faced significant disruption due to prolonged flooding, including damage to homes and infrastructure, loss of livelihoods and limited access to essential services.

The assistance comprised utensil kits, blankets, mosquito nets and phenyl/disinfectants. The relief materials were identified with consideration to the immediate needs of families during the post–flood period, particularly household requirements, bedding and sanitation.

Sivasagar and Charaideo were identified for the initiative based on the severity of the flooding and the humanitarian requirements of affected communities. Inputs from Assam State Disaster Management Authority flood situation reports, district-level information and ground-level assessments were considered in identifying priority areas and understanding the needs of affected families. The programme was implemented with the involvement of the companies’ trade networks in the steel and paints sectors, while local community inputs helped facilitate the distribution of relief materials.

Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Lalit Beriwala, Director, Shyam Steel, said,

“The impact of a flood continues well beyond the immediate crisis, particularly for families who have lost household essentials, faced damage to their homes and are working to restore their everyday lives. Through this initiative, Shyam Steel and Macaw Paints’ joint effort was to support communities with some of the basic requirements that could make the recovery period a little more manageable. We hoped this assistance would reach families at a time when they needed continued support to rebuild their daily lives.”

The initiative also took into account the challenges faced by affected communities after floodwaters recede. In addition to damage to residential homes and disruption of connectivity, the floods have affected agricultural and livelihood activities and led to concerns around drinking water and sanitation. Shortages of bedding, clothing and other essential items have further added to the difficulties faced by several households.

The relief programme was completed over a period of approximately seven to eight days, subject to weather conditions and accessibility of the affected areas. The initiative was intended as a post-disaster support measure, with the focus remaining on delivering need-based assistance to families as they transition from immediate flood response towards recovery.

By directing relief towards practical household and sanitation requirements, the programme contributed to the restoration of basic living conditions for affected families while complementing the broader relief and recovery efforts underway across the flood-affected communities of Upper Assam.

Centre Rolls Out Incentive Plan to Expand Piped Gas Access Across Homes

New Delhi, August 19, 2026: The Central government has approved a new Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Domestic PNG Connections aimed at accelerating the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections among households across the country.

The scheme, approved by the government on August 18, will come into effect from September 1, 2026, and is designed to encourage City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities to expand their household PNG networks and convert unbilled or inactive connections into active, billed connections.

Under the initiative, eligible CGD entities will receive an additional allocation of domestic APM gas for incremental billed domestic PNG connections. The incentive is intended to reduce gas sourcing costs for distributors and improve the financial viability of expanding household PNG infrastructure.

The scheme will be implemented in two six-month tranches. The additional domestic gas allocation is expected to help CGD companies reduce their dependence on relatively more expensive LNG for their overall gas requirements, thereby improving the economics of domestic PNG expansion.

According to the government, the financial benefit could significantly shorten the investment payback period for domestic PNG connections. Investments that currently take around 10 years to recover could see the payback period reduced to nearly three years, creating a stronger incentive for CGD companies to expand their networks.

The initiative is expected to support the government’s broader objective of increasing access to clean, safe and affordable cooking fuel. PNG offers households a continuous piped fuel supply and can reduce dependence on conventional LPG cylinders.

The scheme is also expected to encourage CGD companies to extend networks into new areas where household PNG penetration remains limited. By improving the commercial viability of new connections, the government hopes to accelerate the rollout of piped gas infrastructure and bring more households into the country’s expanding city gas distribution network.

The move comes as India continues to expand the use of natural gas as part of its efforts to diversify the energy mix and promote cleaner fuels. The government expects the incentive mechanism to provide both consumers and gas distribution companies with greater momentum toward wider adoption of domestic PNG.

RailTel Wins Rs 166.8 Crore Order from EPFO for IaaS Solutions

New Delhi, August 19, 2026: RailTel Corporation of India Ltd has secured a work order worth Rs 166.8 crore, including taxes, from the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) for providing Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), strengthening the public sector telecom company’s presence in government digital infrastructure projects.

The order involves a one-year extension of RailTel’s existing IaaS engagement with EPFO, along with additional components. The contract is valid up to February 2027, according to information available on the order.

Under the arrangement, RailTel will provide infrastructure required to support EPFO’s technology operations and digital services. The company has previously been associated with EPFO for infrastructure and managed IT services, including IaaS support for its Passbook and Management Information System (MIS) services.

EPFO documents have also referred to RailTel’s role in providing IaaS infrastructure for initiatives including the Centralised IT Enabled System (CITES) 2.01, Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme and Centralised Pension Payment Scheme (CPPS).

The latest order adds to RailTel’s growing portfolio of government technology and digital infrastructure contracts. The company has been securing orders across telecom, ICT and infrastructure-as-a-service segments, supporting its strategy of expanding beyond its traditional railway-focused connectivity business.

The EPFO contract is also significant as government organisations increasingly rely on scalable IT infrastructure to support digital delivery of services, large databases and citizen-facing platforms. RailTel’s continued engagement with EPFO reflects the company’s role in providing technology infrastructure for critical public-sector applications.

For RailTel, the order provides additional revenue visibility while reinforcing its position as a government-focused technology and infrastructure service provider.

India’s General Insurance Market Hits ₹3.36 Lakh Crore as Health, Motor Segments Drive FY26 Growth

India’s general insurance industry closed FY2025-26 on a stronger footing, with total premium collections rising about 9% to ₹3.36 lakh crore. The expansion marks a notable improvement over the previous financial year and reflects a gradual increase in demand for financial protection among households and businesses. Rising healthcare expenses, a growing vehicle base, greater awareness of insurance and the rapid adoption of digital distribution are reshaping the country’s non-life insurance market.

Health insurance emerged as the standout performer, with premiums expanding at a significantly faster pace than the overall industry. The segment has benefited from increasing awareness of medical risks and the need to protect household finances from rising treatment costs. The shift towards retail health policies is particularly important, as more consumers seek individual and family-level coverage rather than relying solely on employer-provided insurance. Insurers are responding with technology-led underwriting, digital policy issuance and faster claims processes.

The motor insurance segment also crossed an important milestone, with annual premiums moving beyond the ₹1 lakh crore mark. India’s expanding automobile market, mandatory third-party insurance requirements and increasing vehicle ownership continue to provide a stable base for the segment. At the same time, the industry is entering a period of technological change as electric vehicles, connected cars, telematics and digital claims solutions create new opportunities as well as new underwriting challenges for insurers.

The broader growth story, however, extends beyond premium numbers. India remains a relatively underpenetrated insurance market, creating considerable room for expansion in areas such as property, agriculture, cyber insurance, small-business protection and climate-related risks. Insurers are increasingly exploring embedded insurance, fintech partnerships, data analytics and mobile-first distribution to reach customers beyond traditional urban markets.

For the industry, the next phase will be less about simply selling more policies and more about making insurance accessible, affordable and relevant to a wider section of the population. The FY26 performance suggests that general insurance is becoming increasingly integrated into household and business financial planning. If insurers can combine product innovation with stronger customer service and efficient claims settlement, the sector could become an important pillar of India’s broader financial inclusion and risk-management ecosystem.

Gwalior-Chambal Rail Connectivity Gets Major Boost with Kailaras-Birpur Section Inauguration

Gwalior, August 18, 2026: The Gwalior-Chambal region is set to receive a major boost to rail connectivity with the inauguration of the Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur gauge-converted rail section and the extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service to Birpur.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the upgraded section and flagged off the extended train service, marking a significant step towards improving passenger connectivity and supporting economic activity across the region.

The gauge conversion project is expected to benefit residents of more than 100 villages across Morena and Sheopur districts by improving access to rail services and strengthening connections with major urban centres.

Vaishnaw said the upgraded connectivity would provide new opportunities for local communities and contribute to the development of the Gwalior-Chambal region. The project is also expected to facilitate smoother movement of passengers and goods while supporting regional trade and economic activity.

The Railway Minister said work on the Birpur-Seroni Road and Seroni Road-Sheopur Kalan sections is almost complete, further strengthening the railway network in the region.

The developments are part of broader efforts by Indian Railways to expand and modernise infrastructure, improve connectivity and provide better services to passengers across Madhya Pradesh.

Vaishnaw also highlighted the expansion of employment opportunities in Indian Railways, stating that more than 5.54 lakh personnel have been recruited since 2014.

He further said the railway budget allocation for Madhya Pradesh has increased nearly 24-fold, from ₹632 crore during 2009-14 to ₹15,188 crore in 2026-27. The increased investment and ongoing infrastructure projects are expected to strengthen Madhya Pradesh’s rail network and support long-term regional development.

Inside India’s Evolving Affluent Economy

The Whitepaper reinforces this shift, noting that 7 in 10 affluent consumers seek bespoke and exclusive offerings – reflecting with strategic expansion of the Visa Infinite proposition.

“Visa has long played a defining role in shaping the world of premium payments and affluent lifestyles, connecting consumers to experiences, privileges, and unparalleled acceptance across the globe,” said Rishi Chhabra, Country Manager, India, Visa. “The refreshed Visa Infinite portfolio builds on this leadership and has been shaped by a clear understanding of India’s affluent consumers – their global identity, need for hyper-personalization and customized offerings, and expectations of premium propositions that are intuitive, relevant, and connected to their lives. A progressive approach to modern affluence

The Visa Infinite portfolio introduces a clear progression of benefits and access across three tiers, underpinned by intelligent payments capabilities including elevated transaction limits, smart authorisation, cross-border issuance and always-on security.

  • Visa Infinite anchors the suite, delivering elevated everyday value and enhanced travel and lifestyle rewards.
  • Visa Infinite Privilege builds on this with broader access and more curated experiences.
  • At the top tier, Visa Infinite Private is an invitation-only offering, designed for ultra-high-net-worth individuals, with bespoke services and exclusive access to rare and highly personalised experiences.

Experiential programs around consumer passions

The refreshed proposition responds to the evolution in affluence, where premium consumers increasingly expect access that moves seamlessly across travel, dining, sport, wellness and other lifestyle passions that define how they aspire to live. Bringing this to life are curated experiential programmes that move beyond conventional card benefits to offer more immersive and discovery-led access.

These include curations like Infinite Tastes: Beyond the Menu, a chef-led culinary programme that unlocks deeper access to the stories, craft and culture shaping Asia Pacific’s dining scene, including India, and Visa Destinations, a passion-led global travel platform offering handpicked journeys and exclusive access. Together, these programmes reflect the expanded Visa Infinite portfolio’s focus on creating meaningful moments that bring cardholders closer to the passions they value most.
