Breathless Nation: Tackling the surge of Asthma

By-Dr Srinivas Jakka, Consultant in Paediatrics, Pulmonology & Allergy,Ankura Hospital for Women and Children
Asthma, a chronic respiratory condition marked by airway inflammation and constriction, is increasingly prevalent in India. As of 2024, approximately 34.3 million Indians are affected, representing about 13% of the global asthma burden. Alarmingly, India accounts for 46% of global asthma-related deaths, highlighting significant challenges in disease management and awareness. Asthma can affect people of all ages, but it most commonly begins in childhood. Here’s how it typically breaks down:
Children (0–14 years): Asthma is particularly prevalent in this age group. According to the Global Asthma Report 2022, nearly 10% of Indian children suffer from asthma symptoms. In urban areas like Hyderabad, paediatricians report that 20–25% of their young patients present with asthma or asthma-like symptoms, often triggered by pollution, dust mites, or respiratory infections.
Adolescents (15–19 years): Asthma often continues from childhood into adolescence, with hormonal changes, stress, and continued exposure to environmental triggers exacerbating symptoms.
Although Asthma can affect anyone, children under 14 years are the most commonly affected group, followed by a rising incidence in adult women due to environmental and lifestyle factors.
In Telangana, particularly Hyderabad, medical professionals have observed a notable rise in asthma cases, especially during winter months. Up to 80% of allergic reactions during this season are attributed to indoor allergens like house dust mites and moulds. Clinics report that 40–50% of patients present with respiratory symptoms, including acute asthma exacerbations.
Air pollution remains a significant trigger for asthma. In January 2024, severe air quality in Delhi led to a surge in asthma medication sales. This indicates a direct correlation between pollution levels and asthma flare-ups.
Despite the availability of effective treatments; under diagnosis and inadequate use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) persist. Less than 10% of diagnosed patients in India use ICS regularly, often due to misconceptions and lack of awareness.
Addressing asthma’s growing burden necessitates a multifaceted approach that goes beyond symptomatic relief to long-term disease control. While asthma does not have a permanent cure, it can be effectively managed through a combination of medical treatment, lifestyle adjustments, and environmental interventions. The cornerstone of asthma management is the regular use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), which reduce inflammation in the airways and prevent the onset of severe attacks. Despite their proven efficacy, usage remains dismally low in India—with fewer than 10% of diagnosed patients adhering to ICS-based therapy. Increasing awareness around the safety and effectiveness of inhalers is critical to bridging this gap.
For patients experiencing frequent symptoms or nighttime disturbances, long-acting bronchodilators (LABAs) are often prescribed in combination with ICS. In acute episodes, short-acting beta-agonists (SABAs) like salbutamol are used for immediate relief. Newer biologic therapies, such as omalizumab and mepolizumab, have shown promising results in patients with severe asthma that doesn’t respond to standard treatment, though access and affordability remain challenges in India.
Non-pharmacological interventions play a vital role too. Identifying and avoiding specific triggers—such as pollen, pet dander, household dust, tobacco smoke, and air pollution—is essential. In cities like Hyderabad, where environmental allergens and pollutants are rampant, using air purifiers, maintaining clean indoor environments, and improving ventilation can significantly reduce symptom frequency. Breathing exercises and pulmonary rehabilitation programs have also shown to improve lung function and overall quality of life for asthma patients.
Equally important is early diagnosis—particularly in children, who often go undiagnosed due to misinterpretation of wheezing and cough as recurrent infections. Regular screening in schools, public health campaigns, and training for primary care physicians can aid in timely intervention.
Ultimately, a collaborative approach is vital. Healthcare providers must ensure patient education and personalized treatment plans; policymakers should improve access to essential asthma medications; and communities must support awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and encourage early care-seeking. With sustained and integrated action, asthma can be controlled effectively, preventing hospitalizations, improving daily functioning, and enabling individuals to lead full and active lives.
In order to facilitate patient adoption of treatment and ensure compliance, Ankura Hospitals operate Asthma Clinics at each of their branches. We are also organizing a Webinar on Asthma Management for the medical practitioners for an update on the latest approaches in Managing Asthma on World Asthma Day.

Bengaluru leads India’s residential market: 25% Share in Q1 2025 launches and sales, premium segment soars 119%: JLL
BENGALURU, MAY 5th 2025: In the first quarter of 2025 (Q12025), Bengaluru set a new benchmark in India’s residential real estate market. The city achieved its highest-ever quarterly launch of 20,484 residential units, while also recording 15,340-unit sales. This performance established Bengaluru as the top contributor (with around 25% share) to both residential supply and demand across India for Q1 2025. Despite a general slowdown in housing sales both nationwide and within Bengaluru during this period, the city maintained its premiere position in the country’s residential landscape highlighting its sustained appeal to homebuyers.
Bengaluru’s residential supply of 20,484 units in 1Q 2025 surpassed the city’s previous high set in Q2 2024 and registered a substantial 62% increase compared to the same quarter in the previous year. The prime factors driving the sustained residential sector growth in Bengaluru include its robust IT and startup ecosystem, its rising popularity as an employment hub and the ongoing expansion of Namma Metro and road networks connecting peripheries to the core. Additionally, strong property sales performance in previous quarters that boosted investor and developer confidence resulted in steady surge in launches and strengthened Bengaluru’s position as a key player in India’s housing sector.
Bengaluru’s residential sector performance
| Bengaluru | Q1 2025 | Q1 2024 | Y-O-Y growth | Share across top 7 cities, Q1 2025 |
| Units launched | 20,484 | 12,616 | 62% | 26% |
| Units Sold | 15,340 | 16,995 | -10% | 24% |
“Sustained quarterly sales in Bengaluru have been largely driven by healthy buyer interest in projects launched during the same quarter. Interestingly in Q1 2025, around 30% of Bengaluru’s sales were contributed by projects launched during the first quarter of the year, signalling strong buyer confidence in such projects in early stages of construction. In terms of submarket wise performance, Bellary Road emerged as the frontrunner in new project launches, accounting for over a third of the total, meanwhile, Whitefield proved most attractive to homebuyers, generating 35% of the quarter’s overall sales,” Siva Krishnan, Senior Managing Director (Chennai & Coimbatore), Head – Residential Services, India, JLL.
Sustained contribution by high end and premium apartments in Bengaluru’s housing sector dynamics
Improved supply and demand traction in apartments priced more than INR 1.0 crore drove Bengaluru’s quarterly housing sector performance, despite a short-term slowdown in sales Apartments priced INR 1.0 crore and above, held a dominant share of around 61% in Bengaluru’s Q1 housing sales and recorded a remarkable growth of ~31% when compared to Q1 2024. Out of this, the premium segment apartments (priced between INR 3.0 -5.0 crore) witnessed majority of the traction with ~119% year-on-year growth in sales. The consistent rise in demand for more expensive homes reflects growing wealth among property seekers, evolving lifestyle aspirations, and a shift towards prioritizing spacious and high-end residences.” said Dr. Samantak Das, Chief Economist and Head of Research and REIS, India, JLL
High end and Premium Housing Segment experiences steep growth trajectory
| Ticket Size Break Up – Sales (%) in Bengaluru | |||
| % share in Sales | |||
| Q1 2025 | Q1 2024 | Y-O-Y growth in sales | |
| Less Than 50 Lakh | 3% | 7% | -59% |
| 50 Lakh – 1 crore | 36% | 51% | -36% |
| Sub INR 1 crore | 39% | 58% | -39% |

| Above INR 1 crore | 61% | 42% | 31% |
| Total | 100% | 100% | -10% |
Residential prices see steady climb
Bengaluru’s residential real estate market witnessed a healthy upswing in Q1 2025, with average property prices climbing by approximately 13% compared to the previous year. This price appreciation can be largely attributed to factors such as introduction of high-end projects at premium price points that has pulled the average price upwards and the rapid absorption of quality developments. Whitefield enjoyed the highest Y-o-Y price growth of 17% followed by Hosur Road submarket with 14% appreciation.

UTI Asset Management Company : Q4FY25 Result Update
UTIAM saw a soft quarter as core income missed PLe by 7% led by higher opex. Revenue yields were in-line at 42.2bps (PLe 42.4bps) as AMC yield was stable QoQ at 33.9bps. Equity performance in 1-yr bucket has been consistently improving since Mar’24, and 59% of equity AUM is in quartile 1 & 2 as of Mar’25. A dilution of 1-2bps is expected in yields which will be cushioned by commission rationalization carried out in Q4FY25. Staff cost is guided to grow by 3%/5% at the standalone/consol level; we envisage other opex to grow at an 11% CAGR over FY25-27E. Due to operating leverage, opex/AuM could fall from 24bps to 21bps over FY25-27E, which would translate to a core PAT CAGR of 15%. Stock is valued at 10.5x suggesting a 62% discount to NAM. We tweak multiple to 16x and TP to 1,300 as we roll forward to Mar’27 core EPS. Retain ‘BUY’.
- Soft quarter; core income miss due to higher opex/tax: Overall QAAuM came in at Rs3.41trn,(-3.6% QoQ) while equity QAAuM de-grew by 5% QoQ to Rs1.22trn. Revenue was in-line at Rs3.6bn; annualized yields declined to 42.2bps (PLe 42.4bps). Opex was a miss at Rs2.1bn (PLe Rs2.0bn); staff cost and other expenses were higher due to branch expansion. Core income at Rs1.5bn was 7% below PLe. Resulting operating yields were lower at 17.3bps (PLe 18.7bps). Other income was a miss at Rs60mn (PLe Rs200mn) due to MTM losses in UTI international. Tax rate was higher at 33.8% (PLe 23%) owing to change in DTL on account of withdrawal of indexation benefit. Core PAT was Rs980mn (20% miss to PLe). PAT was Rs1.02bn.
- AMC yields were stable QoQ: Equity share declined QoQ to 35.8% from 36.4% in Q3’25; debt/liquid share inched up by 0.8%/0.2% to 10.8%/9.8%. ETF share decreased by 0.8% QoQ to 31.3%. AMC yields were steady QoQ at 33.9bps as equity yields saw a slight uptick QoQ to ~75bps. Company rationalized commissions during Q4FY25, the impact of which will be visible Q1FY26. Equity performance in the 1-yr bucket, a lead indicator, has been consistently improving since Mar’24. As per the company, 59% of equity AUM is in quartile 1 & 2 as of Mar’25. 3-yr performance is also enhancing since Aug’24. Market share in net flows has turned positive in FY25, as against outflows for FY24.
- Opex leverage to continue led by controlled staff cost growth: Consol other opex was elevated due to i) NFO expenses ii) opening of 91 branches iii) branch renovation. Expenses in UTI International have also gone up due to expansion in Europe & USA. As per UTIAM, staff cost might increase in FY26 by 3%/5% at the standalone/consol considering wage hike of 7-8%. Capex increase in FY25 was majorly due to branch expansion and IT upgradation; these are expected to slow down in FY26. Hence in our opinion, other opex could grow at a lower pace in FY26 than FY25. However, we are conservatively factoring an 11% CAGR in other opex over FY25-27E (10% YoY growth in FY25). Tax rate is expected to normalize to 23-24%.
