RBI Kicks Off Three-Day MPC Meeting Today, Set to Conclude on October 9

7th October 2024: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to begin its three-day monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting today, October 7, and will conclude on October 9 (Wednesday). During this critical meeting, policymakers will assess current economic conditions, including inflation trends and growth projections, to determine the appropriate stance on interest rates. Market participants are keenly watching for signals regarding the RBI’s approach to balancing inflation control with economic support, particularly in the context of evolving global economic challenges. The outcomes of this meeting will provide important insights into the RBI’s strategy for navigating the financial landscape in the coming months.

Mr. Sanju Bhadana, MD, 4S Developers:

The RBI is expected to maintain status quo as inflation risks persist. The apex bank is likely to monitor more factors like the emerging geo-political tensions, monsoon and inflation before it possibly undertakes rate cuts in the coming months. In view of the slowing down of property sales and launches in September quarter, a rate cut would be ideal during this festive season to spur demand.

Shiwang Suraj, founder and director of Gurugram-based property consulting firm InfraMantra:

The RBI must initiate rate cut cycle as housing sales have begun to show signs of slowdown. The fatigue from homebuyers is not only a result of rising home prices but also high mortgage rates. The RBI must look at ways to reinvigorate the housing momentum in view to balance the host of concerns that domestically or globally may affect India’s growth story.

Anuj Puri, Chairman – ANAROCK Group

The RBI’s upcoming monetary policy announcement will, as always, have implications on different industries and markets. The housing market is especially sensitive to changes in acquisition cost since in India, most home buyers use home loans. A cut in the repo rate would result in lower interest rates on home loans, which makes EMIs more manageable for borrowers.

Of course, interest rates are not the sole factor to influence purchase decisions – property rates also play a big role. As per ANAROCK Research, average residential property prices across the top 7 cities have collectively seen a significant 46% jump since 2021. More attractive interest rates can help improve overall affordability, and this can help catalyse housing sales during the festive season. Improved sales also benefit developers as better sales improve their cash flows and reduce their borrowing expenses for projects.

Equally importantly, a rate cut would help boost overall market sentiment and woo back investors. After many years of largely staying away from housing because of low price growth, investors returned to it after the COVID-19 pandemic because both demand and prices started going up. Currently, many investors have taken a breather as prices appear to have peaked out, but more attractive lending rates can bring them back to the market.

That said, we need to be realistic. While the recent US Fed cut would have prompted the RBI to follow suit, the fact is that the global economy is facing considerable uncertainty because of the ongoing geopolitical tensions. It is a tightrope walk for the RBI and it is therefore possible that it will hold on to the current repo rate for now, until these pressure ease.

Mr. Amit Jain, Chairman and Managing Director, Arkade Developers on the upcoming Repo rate expectation:

“The real estate industry has benefited from the stable repo rate since February 2023, which has maintained lending rates for various borrowings, including home loans. However, given the constrained headroom and mounting inflationary pressures, we anticipate a 25bps to 30bps rate cut in October. The rate cut will increase borrowing, boosting home sales further, particularly during Q3FY 24–25’s festive seasons. As the festive season is around the corner, it is one of the most important times for home sales. Rate reductions will boost demand in all markets, but particularly in Mumbai, which recently passed the one lakh home sales milestone in record 9-month time.”

Manipal Hospital Successfully Hosts National Organ Donation Summit in Pune

Pune, 07th October 2024: The Organ Donation Summit, hosted by Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant (MOST) in association with ZTCC Pune, ISCCM Pune and MOHAN Foundation, concluded on October 5, 2024, in Pune. The two-day event brought together leading national and international experts in organ donation and transplantation to discuss important topics such as “Donation after Circulatory Death” (DCD) and “Quality Assessment in Organ Donation,” which set new standards for organ donation procedures in India. Dr. (Col) Avnish Seth, VSM, Head of Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant (MOST) served as the Organizing Chairperson.

manipal hospital

National and international specialists presented their perspectives, with particular focus on the potential for Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) to boost India’s donor pool. This summit was also the first time that Quality Assessment in organ donation and the need for Key Performance Indicators specific for India were discussed. The summit was also a final step in the creation of a consensus statement of National Consortium on Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) for DCD. The event also investigated new technology and techniques for improving donation processes and outcomes.

While speaking at the summit, Dr. (Col) Avnish Seth, VSM, Head, Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant (MOST) said, “In 2023 we crossed 1000 organ donors following brain death for the first time in India. In brain death the heart is still beating so that blood supply to organs continues. We are now moving towards establishing protocols for DCD. Here, since the heart has stopped, one must move quickly to save organs. One of the ways this can be done effectively is by re-establishing circulation for 2 to 4 hours by a process called Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP). Through Organ Donation Summit 2024, we have made significant progress towards developing a low-cost, hybrid, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation system for NRP in India. This summit marks a critical turning point for organ donation in India, and the innovations and discussions we’ve seen here will help improve transplant outcomes and save more lives in the years to come.”

Dilip Jose, Managing Director and CEO, Manipal Hospitals, “At Manipal Hospitals, we believe that organ donation is a powerful way to give others a second chance at life. The MOST Summit represents our commitment to raising awareness and improving the systems that make this life-saving practice possible. Our goal is to ensure that every patient in need of a transplant has access to the care they deserve, and that organ donation becomes a more widely understood and accepted practice in India.”

Dr. Anil Kumar, Director, National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), “Organ donation is one of the most powerful ways to give someone a new lease on life. Quality assessment at each step from early identification of potential donors to organ retrieval and transplantation is important for achieving excellence and promoting best practices in the field.’ With thousands of people in need of transplants, it’s important for people to understand the impact they can make by becoming organ donors after death.”

The highlight of the summit was the presentation of a low-cost hybrid Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) circuit for normothermic regional perfusion, a technology specifically designed to improve organ preservation in DCD scenarios. This innovation is poised to revolutionize the organ donation process by increasing the viability of organs for transplantation, thus saving more lives.

A significant part of the Organ Donation Summit 2024 focused on navigating the ethical and practical challenges surrounding the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, a crucial aspect of DCD. The summit concluded with a strong call for deeper collaboration among healthcare professionals, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to establish a sustainable organ donation framework so that more lives can be saved through timely transplants.

Mahadevi Birla Students Tackle Kolkata’s Litter Crisis with Smart Dustbin Solution

Kolkata, 7th October, 2014: In the bustling, vibrant streets of Kolkata, a group of young innovators from Mahadevi Birla Shishu Vihar has taken a bold step to combat one of the city’s most pressing challenges—littering and waste management. Inspired by their daily encounters with overflowing trash bins and unsightly litter, five students from the school have developed an innovative solution, aptly named “The Dustbin of Dreams,” to contribute to a cleaner, more beautiful Kolkata.

Dustbin

Kolkata, a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage and lively streets, faces a growing problem with waste disposal and littering. The issue has not only marred the city’s aesthetic appeal but has also contributed to environmental pollution. Determined to act, these young students – Arshi Drolia, Srithi Bhattacharya, Aradhana Ghosh, and Jagriti Jhunjhunwala came together to design an automatic dustbin that makes disposing of waste easier, more hygienic, and more effective.

Their innovative dustbin, equipped with advanced sensors, automatically detects when someone approaches and opens its lid, allowing users to dispose of their waste without needing to touch the bin. “The dustbin also features a built-in trash compacting system that reduces the volume of waste, preventing the bin from filling up too quickly and reducing the frequency of waste collection. To further encourage positive behaviour, the students incorporated a digital display screen that thanks users for properly disposing of their trash, promoting a sense of community responsibility in keeping the city clean,” one of the student inventors, Srithi Bhattacharya explained.

Speaking about their motivation behind the project, the students shared how personal the issue of littering had become for them. “Having grown up witnessing the detrimental effects of waste on our city’s environment, we felt a strong sense of responsibility to create change. This personal connection led us to design “The Dustbin of Dreams”—a symbol of our vision for a cleaner, greener Kolkata,” another inventor Aradhana Ghosh added.

“Our project was born from the love we have for our city,” another participating student inventor, Arshi Drolia stated. “We wanted to make something that not only helps reduce litter but also encourages people to take part in keeping Kolkata clean,” Jagriti Jhunjhunwala added.

The students’ innovative project has already garnered attention from both their school and the local community, inspiring others to think creatively about solving environmental issues. Their goal is to implement the dustbins in public spaces across the city, helping to address the problem of littering at its source while fostering a culture of cleanliness and civic pride.

As these young innovators continue to push forward with their project, they hope to collaborate with local authorities, businesses, and environmental organizations to bring their vision of a cleaner Kolkata to life.
