Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. collaborates with leading Charge Point Operators to setup over 10,000 charging stations by FY25

Bengaluru, 12 December 2023: Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEM), pioneers of India’s EV revolution, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading charge point operators (CPOs), Chargezone, Glida, Statiq, and Zeon, to further develop India’s charging infrastructure.

This MoU crucially builds on the significant existing presence of each operator in the charging ecosystem and TPEM’s unique telematics insights basis more than 1.15 lakh Tata EVs on Indian roads. TPEM will actively assist the four CPOs in installing chargers at locations most frequented by its EV owners and share insights on how the chargers are being used to help understand and enhance customer experience.

Chargezone, Glida (formerly known as Fortum Charge & Drive India), Statiq, and Zeon are leading CPOs in the country, with a combined network of nearly 2,000 charging points across key cities. The robust charging ecosystem built by these operators forms the backbone upon which India’s transition to sustainable mobility is already happening. Through this collaboration, the CPOs intend to roll out over 10,000 additional charging points within the next 12-15 months.

Through this MoU, TPEM will also work with Chargezone, Glida, Statiq, and Zeon to explore the possibility to roll-out out a smart payment gateway through co-branded RFID cards respectively, that will enable ease of payment for Tata EV users. Furthermore, customers can avail benefits of loyalty programs from these respective CPOs and access a dedicated customer care number for any assistance.

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. collaborates with leading Charge Point Operators to setup over 10,000 charging stations by FY25

Speaking at the MoU signing, Mr. Balaje Rajan, Chief Strategy Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said, “EV adoption is a national imperative to address urban pollution, and convenient charging infrastructure is a key enabler for driving faster EV adoption. The need of the hour for accelerating a nationwide charging ecosystem is open collaboration, and we are delighted to announce our strategic collaboration with Chargezone, Glida, Statiq, and Zeon, to accelerate India’s journey towards e-mobility. This collaboration will benefit from TPEM’s unparalleled EV usage insights, coupled with the CPOs’ innovative charging solutions and entrepreneurial spirit, and create 10,000+ additional charging points in the country by FY25.”

Global case studies consistently demonstrate how widespread and easily accessible charging infrastructure is a crucial element of the EV ecosystem. The expansion of charging infrastructure has been shown to lead to a significant increase in the adoption of EVs. This innovative open collaboration between major CPOs and TPEM is anticipated to expedite the development of charging infrastructure in the nation, thereby playing a pivotal role in making EV adoption more widespread.

Since its inception, TPEM has been maintaining a close collaboration with Tata Power to develop charging infrastructure, resulting in over 4,900 public chargers across the country. Furthermore, the two companies also launched the EZ Charge Card – a RFID card that allows customers to initiate charging with a tap. In addition to this, a strategic alliance with BPCL aims to set up 7,000 chargers over the next year.

Commenting on the MoU, Kartikey Hariyani, Founder and CEO, of CHARGE ZONE, said, “With the industry witnessing a high-growth phase of electric mobility, we have been working with automotive OEMs for strategic partnerships and a collaborative approach towards building reliable high-speed charging infrastructure. The Apprenticeship Outlook Report brings to light a pivotal insight—41% of employers believe that degree apprenticeships stand as a formidable strategy to effectively address the skill gap through seamless industry-academia collaboration. This recognition underscores the transformative role of apprenticeships in shaping a future-ready workforce, emphasizing a strategic commitment to talent development, skill enhancement, and the establishment of a robust talent pipeline. As the report illuminates, this insight marks a significant leap toward fostering a skilled and promising future for India’s workforce.

This extraordinary surge underscores the robust growth anticipated in India’s apprenticeship landscape, with key cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad leading the charge. The report unveils a transformative phase for India’s workforce, promising unparalleled opportunities for skill development and career growth.

Employer satisfaction and reasons for apprentice engagement

An encouraging 70% of employers engaged apprentices during April-September HY1, 2023, with 63% expressing satisfaction with apprentice performance. Employers cited ‘addressing skill shortages,’ ‘cost-effective talent development,’ and ‘strengthening community engagement and CSR efforts’ as major reasons for engaging apprentices.

Gender preferences and workforce expansion anticipation

While 45% of employers have no gender preferences, others showcase a preference for female candidates, especially in Services sectors like BFSI (21%), Retail (18%), and in Manufacturing sector are Engineering & Industrial (20%), Automobile & Ancillaries (17%) and Electrical & Electronics (13%). City-wise Trends: Bangalore leads with a 17% increase in NAO

Among the metro cities, five out of six exhibit an increase in NAO for the Oct-Mar 2023-24 half-year, Bangalore leading with an impressive 85%, followed by Delhi at 82% and Hyderabad at 80%.The top three industries engaging apprentices in Bangalore are Engineering & Industrial (89%), BFSI (86%), and Retail (82%).

Employer strategies and structured training programs

Structured training programs (53%) and regular mentoring and coaching (41%) emerge as the preferred strategies for engaging apprentices, reflecting a commitment to their development. A significant 78% of employers report that over half of their apprentices successfully complete their training.

Top reasons for employers foreseeing an increase in apprenticeship hiring include real-time skill availability (35%) and business growth (21%). These statistics underscore the vital role apprentices play in contributing to tangible business outcomes.

Apprenticeship categories in demand

Optional Trade (82%), Designated Trade (80%), and Diploma Apprenticeship (77%) top the list of sought-after apprenticeship categories. Fitter/Mechanical Assembly (31%), Production Engineer (26%), and Computer Networking Technician (19%) are the most in-demand career opportunities in Optional/Designated Trade, while Machinist (22%), Production Apprentice (16%), and Mechanic (12%) are the top three roles in Trade Apprenticeships. In a Diploma Apprenticeship, the roles are Technical Service Engineer (25%), Machine Operator (18%), and Data Analyst (15%). In Graduate Apprenticeships, positions such as Electrical and Electronics Engineer (25%), Mechanical Engineer (17%), and Automobile Engineer (14%), are highly sought after.

Sumit Kumar, Chief Business Officer at TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, remarked, “It’s encouraging to note that the percentage of businesses eager to boost their apprentice involvement in the quarter has improved as India Inc. continues to recognize the value of apprenticeships in building a robust talent pool. Over the last three years, the net apprenticeship outlook has gone up from 41% in 2021 (Jan – June 2021) to 75% (Oct 23 – March 24) which is an all-time high. The primary reasons driving the growth are real-time skill availability, cost-effectiveness, and driving community engagement under CSR. Also, initiatives from Govt. like PLI and Make in India are driving the employment opportunities for which employers are relying on apprenticeships to build a talent pipeline. 63% of employers have reported satisfactory performances of the apprentices, which is encouraging for employers to scale up the intake. Employers are beginning to realize that apprenticeships linked to a degree are much more effective and impactful in attracting the youth for apprenticeships and also longer engagements. Anticipating a promising trajectory for apprenticeship engagement in India throughout fiscal 2023, degree apprenticeship is emerging as the modern Nayi Talim, which can yield socio-economic growth for the country. Apprenticeships or work-based programs can help balance the GER with the employability factor to lead India on the path to becoming the skill capital of the world. Evidently, the impetus from the PLI and NEP and the rise of academia-industry collaboration to expand degree apprenticeships are major contributors to the ecosystem. Additionally, gender neutrality in apprentice engagement is evident amongst employers across industries. Manufacturing exhibits a greater level of gender neutrality, especially in Engineering & Industrial (20%), Automobile & Automobiles (17%), and Electrical & Electronics (13%).”

Dhriti Prasanna Mahanta, Vice President at TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, emphasized, “Apprenticeships emerge as the key to unlocking greater opportunities for female candidates in the evolving retail sector of India.” In the retail industry, the percentage of women working is 25–30%, while it is 60–75% in the US and the UK. It is evident that a considerable increase in the women’s labor participation rate is facilitated by apprenticeships. HR leaders highlight that apprenticeships will not only influence the talent pool in technology, services, and retail in the future but will also serve as a beacon for closing the gender gap. The total number of apprentices employed over the last five years has increased by 30%, and growth in the retail, BFSI, and logistics industries is predicted to reach 67% during the next 3 years”

Road Safety Good Practices

A Blueprint to Trace the Path to Reducing Road Crash Deaths by Half in India

A step towards achieving Target 3.6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): To reduce Road Crashes and Deaths by 50% by 2030

December 12, New Delhi: Scaling successful corridor-based road safety practices can save as many as 40,000 lives each year. This was revealed in a study released earlier today by the Hon Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari.

Undertaken by SaveLIFE Foundation in close cooperation with the World Bank Group and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the study, titled “Road Safety Good Practices in     India”, showcases road safety success stories from across the country. These are interventions that have led to a measurable and, in many cases, a remarkable reduction in road crash fatalities on target road corridors.

The report highlights good practices, such as the National Highway 48 (Old Mumbai-Pune Highway) Zero Fatality Corridor (ZFC) project, that registered a remarkable 61% decrease in fatalities between 2018 and 2021. Similarly, the Belgaum Yaragatti Highway’s Safe Corridor Demonstration Project (SCDP) in Karnataka recorded a notable 54% reduction in deaths over three years from 2015 to 2018. Most remarkably, the Sabarimala Safe Zone has maintained zero road crash deaths between 2019 and 2021, serving as a blueprint for pilgrimage sites nationwide. In each of the aforementioned cases, a concerted effort was undertaken to analyse road crashes and take a 360-degree approach to
address them. These include enhancement of road safety furniture on the road, effective and targeted enforcement, and improvements in emergency medical response.

The report, released in the presence of senior officials from Central and State Governments, categorises interventions as corridor-based, network-based, and state-based, covering nine corridor- based, two city/network-based, and two state-based interventions across ten states. The report not only documents “what has worked” but also “how it was done,” to enable effective adoption and replication of the good practices.

To gather these practices, all the relevant departments (i.e., police, transport, health, etc.) of all 28 States and 8 Union Territories across India were contacted with questionnaires. Further, secondary research was conducted to understand the national road safety landscape, locate promising road safety endeavours, and supplement the data shared by States. The responses from States and the findings from secondary research have been analysed and presented in the report.

Speaking about the report, Shri Nitin Gadkari said, “This timely report by SaveLIFE Foundation, with support from the World Bank Group and MoRTH, aims to chart a safer course for India’s roadways. Its comprehensive analysis will serve as a resource for policymakers, administrators, and stakeholders to identify and replicate strategies that have been effective in reducing road crash deaths. I am certain that the report will serve as a much-needed catalyst for fostering collaboration and encouraging the sharing of knowledge, through its practical solutions, drawn from real-world examples, that can be tailored to suit the diverse conditions found throughout India. By honing in on successful interventions specific to certain corridors or localities, the report provides a nuanced understanding of what works- and what can work elsewhere if appropriately adapted.”

“Road crash deaths in India have increased by 7% between 2018 and 2022, underscoring the need for India to enhance the ongoing efforts to achieve a sustainable reduction in deaths. This report has been created to act as a guidebook for states to replicate practices that have shown notable improvements in road safety. We hope that the standardised formats and templates that the study puts forth will allow for cross-functional knowledge exchange and more informed initiatives at the ground level” added Piyush Tewari, Founder and CEO of SaveLIFE Foundation.

Uber partners with Goonj to spread warmth with Uber Package

Bangalore, December 12, 2023: Uber today rolled out its annual winter campaign – ‘Spread Warmth with Uber Package’, by inviting people to contribute woolens to help the needy this winter. Uber will provide free pick-ups and drops for these giveaways in Delhi- NCR between Dec 13 and Dec 19, from 10AM to 5PM. The ridesharing company has partnered with notable non profit Goonj for this campaign, which has been running winter giveaway campaigns for over two decades.

On the Uber app – a dedicated delivery option, ‘Package Giving’, has been created through which people can give away their woolen clothes in good condition to the underprivileged to help provide some comfort during north India’s cold winter. Uber will provide logistics support by offering free Uber Package rides for delivering woolens to Goonj’s Head Office in Delhi. Goonj will sort and include these woolens in its ‘Winter Kits’ to be sent to colder regions of rural India, carefully prepared for families in need.

Uber is committed to supporting communities it serves in, and urges residents of Delhi-NCR to generously support the initiative which makes giving and sharing as easy as a few clicks on the app.

Speaking about Uber’s campaign, Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia, said, “We have always strived to support the communities in the cities we serve, in all the ways we can. We know the winters are harsh in most of north India, and that many are forced to endure the biting cold without access to proper woolens.  Speaking about the partnership, Anshu Gupta, Founder Director, Goonj, said, “We believe winters are an annual, preventable disaster for people who have little clothes. In cities like Delhi, where we have abundance of clothes and woolens in our homes, this campaign gives everyone an option to create exponential impact beyond the regular recycling of their woolens. Instead when you ‘Goonj it’ your woolens, you not only bring warmth to someone you also contribute to rural development outcomes. We also hope that more corporations and cloth brands partner with us on preventing this annual suffering of people.”

Help Spread Warmth this winter in 3 easy steps:
● Open the Uber app (For new users- Get the free Uber app from the App Store or Google Play on your smartphone and open the app to create your account).

 ● Click on Package Icon in your Uber app and enter destination as Goonj, Gurjar Rajesh Pilot Marg: Delhi Center and select ‘Uber Package Giving’
