National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) Names Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

Nashville, TN, Nov 1, 2023 ,The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), the nation’s leading organization dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges, has awarded Chancellor Flora Tydings of the College System of Tennessee its 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award.

“NACCE’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes inventive leadership and dedication to local communities and is presented to individuals who have played a pivotal role in the community,” said NACCE President and CEO Rebecca Corbin. “This year’s selection recognizes Chancellor Tydings’ leadership and dedication to entrepreneurship education, particularly in the state of Tennessee.”

Making an Impact
Since she was appointed in 2016, Chancellor Tydings has unified the community and technical college system under the state’s “Focus on College and University Success” (FOCUS) Act of 2016, part of a statewide effort to increase the percentage of working-age Tennessee residents with a college degree or post-secondary certificate or credential to 55 percent by 2025. This recognition highlights the importance of education and leadership, and the positive impact community and technical education has on individuals and communities.

In addition to her contributions to higher education, Chancellor Tydings has served on various boards and committees, advocating for initiatives that promote economic development and education. Earlier this year, USA Today named Tydings one of its “Women of the Year,” in recognition of women who have made a significant impact in their communities and across the country.

Tydings was formerly president of Chattanooga State Community College and Athens Technical College and served as interim president at both Central Georgia Technical College and Sandersville Technical College. She earned her Ed.D. at the University of Georgia, a master’s in education at Mercer University, and a B.S. in Education at Georgia Southern University.

“I am deeply honored and grateful to NACCE and its members for this recognition, which I share with our Board of Regents, the presidents and faculty of our colleges, our system staff and the thousands of others on the front lines of educating our students,” Chancellor Tydings said. “Education is a high calling, and we are all privileged to work every day toward the success of students. I’m proud of this award because I know that NACCE and its members share that mission.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award was announced at NACCE’s annual conference in Nashville during a VIP luncheon, which included national and state leaders in higher education.

Why all languages have words for ‘this’ and ‘that’

New Delhi, October 31, 2023: Languages around the world have words for ‘this’ and ‘that’ according to new research from an international team, led by the University of East Anglia.

Researchers studied more than 1,000 speakers of 29 different languages to see how they use demonstratives – words that show where something is in relation to a person talking such as ‘this cat’ or ‘that dog’.

It was previously thought that languages vary in the spatial distinctions they make – and that speakers of different languages may think in fundamentally different ways as a consequence.

But the new study shows that all of the languages tested make the same spatial distinctions using words like ‘this’ or ‘that’ based on whether they can reach the object they are talking about.

Lead researcher Prof Kenny Coventry, from UEA’s School of Psychology, said; “There are over 7,000 diverse languages spoken across the world.

“We wanted to find out how speakers of a wide range of languages use the oldest recorded words in all of language – spatial demonstratives, such as ‘this’ or ‘that’.”

The 45-strong international team studied 29 languages from around the world including English, Spanish, Norwegian, Japanese, Mandarin, Tzeltal, and Telugu.

They tested over 1,000 speakers to see how they use demonstratives in their language to describe where objects are across a range of different spatial configurations.

Statistical analysis revealed the same mapping between reachable and non-reachable objects and demonstratives across all languages.

Prof Coventry said: “We found that in all the languages we tested, there is a word for objects that are within reach of the speaker, like ‘this’ in English, and a word for objects out of reach – ‘that’.

“This distinction may explain the early evolutionary origin of demonstratives as linguistic forms,” he added.

This research was led by the University of East Anglia in collaboration with researchers at 32 other international institutions including Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Germany, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Aarhus University, Denmark, and the University of Buffalo, USA.

It was funded by EU H2020 ITN Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action grant agreement no. 676063 (DCOMM) awarded to Kenny R. Coventry and colleagues.

‘Spatial Communication Systems Across Languages Reflect Universal Action Constraints’ is published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour.

Krea University has commenced the first round of Admissions for the 2024 intake to the 4 year BA (Honours) and BSc (Honours) programme at the School of Interwoven Arts and Sciences (SIAS), as well as the 5 year Integrated BBA+MBA Programme and 2 year MBA Programme at IFMR Graduate School of Business (GSB).

The 4 year BA (Honours) & BSc (Honours) degrees at SIAS helps students identify the Major that best suits their career and life interests. Students can choose a Major in their second year after they complete 11 Core and Skills course requirements at Krea. The University offers Majors in thirteen disciplines, four Double Majors and sixteen Minors, all housed in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, Division of Literature and Arts, and Division of Sciences respectively.

The flagship 5 year Integrated BBA+MBA Programme was launched at IFMR GSB, rooted in the belief that a leader needs to get started young, straight out of school, and be offered domain knowledge and gain an understanding of the world of business and management through their undergraduate journey. Designed strategically with flexibility, this programme allows learners the freedom after three years of BBA, to either choose to pursue the MBA programme at IFMR GSB or exit the fourth year with a PG Diploma or head for a year-long sabbatical before joining the MBA programme, again.
