Ancient landscape discovered beneath East Antarctic Ice Sheet

Ancient landscape discovered beneath East Antarctic Ice Sheet

October 28, 2023: The research team, which also involved scientists at Durham University, used satellite data and radio-echo sounding techniques to map a 32,000 km2 area of land underneath the vast ice sheet.

They discovered a landscape that appears to have been formed by rivers at least 14 million years ago and possibly even before the initial growth of the East Antarctic ice around 34 million years ago.

This newly discovered landscape consists of ancient valleys and ridges, not dissimilar in size-and-scale to the glacially-modified landscape of North Wales, UK.

Its existence implies a long-term temperature stability of the ice sheet in the area investigated by the researchers.

A satellite image showing the ridges and valleys of the ancient landscape, with the ridges highlighted in red and the valleys highlighted in blue.

The study has been published in the journal Nature Communications.  Co-author Neil Ross, Professor of Polar Science and Environmental Geophysics at Newcastle University, said: “It is remarkable that this landscape, ‘hidden in plain sight’ for many years, can tell us so much about the early, and long-term, history of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, as well as helping us to understand how it might evolve in response to future climate change.  This has been something of a slow burn project, but one that has now come to fruition in an exciting paper involving a great research team.”

Co-author Professor Stewart Jamieson, in the Department of Geography, Durham University, said: “The land underneath the East Antarctic Ice Sheet is less well known than the surface of Mars.

“And that’s a problem because that landscape controls the way that ice in Antarctica flows, and it controls the way it might respond to past, present and future climate change.

“So, we’re investigating a small part of that landscape in more detail to see what it can tell us about the evolution of the landscape and the evolution of the ice sheet.  And what we find is an ancient land surface that has not been eroded by the ice sheet and instead it looks like it was created by rivers before the ice came along.

”This tells us that there hasn’t been a lot of change in this particular area, which indicates that although this part of the ice sheet may have retreated during warmer times in the past, the conditions at this site likely did not change much, and that helps us understand how the ice sheet might respond to future and ongoing warming.”

The discovery builds on previous work by this team who, in collaboration with other researchers, have mapped out hidden mountain ranges, canyon systems and lakes beneath the ice in Antarctica.

Although the landscape beneath the ice sheet is not visible to the naked eye, satellite images captured over the region show small undulations of the ice sheet’s surface that provide clues about the sub-ice landscape.

In a few places, the landscape’s existence has been confirmed by using radio-echo sounding from planes to see through the ice and map the shape of the land beneath the ice sheet.

The research team proposes it is likely that there will be other, as yet undiscovered, ancient landscapes hidden beneath the East Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Professor Jamieson added: “We’ll continue exploring the landscape, doing our best to fill in gaps where surveys don’t exist, and using that information to understand how the ice sheet and its underlying landscape have changed over their long history.”

The survey data collection that underpins this work was supported by the UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA.

Inspired by successful, self-reliant students who have saved money and achieved their academic aspirations, Halp offers a reliable path to studying abroad. Its goal is to promote a culture where students can make independent decisions without being unduly influenced by unfair and financially motivated agents.

The company has, thus far, successfully served thousands of students worldwide with the highest success rate in the industry. India remains their primary market, as the number of Indian students studying abroad is rapidly increasing, and cases of fraud and cheating are also on the rise. Their continued focus on the Indian market is aimed at helping these students avoid falling into the traps set by unfair agents

Matthew-Founder, Halp (2)

“We operate with an approach that prioritizes trust among students. Unlike many agents motivated by commissions, our coaches are not driven by financial incentives, which often result in subpar experiences for students. Matthew McLellan, Co-founder & CEO of Halp, emphasized, “Our commitment lies in being a dependable guide for foreign education.”

In addition, Matthew underscored their dedication to providing transparent and affordable support to all students, regardless of their backgrounds or financial situations. Halp aims to reduce students’ reliance on unregulated and unfair practices in the study abroad sector, ensuring that decisions to study abroad are based on personal choice rather than agents’ vested interests.

In today’s ever-evolving educational landscape, an increasing number of Indian students are choosing the DIY (do it yourself) route, motivated by the success stories of their peers. However, many of them also grapple with concerns regarding the trustworthiness and costs associated with agents and consultants, which can impede their ambitions.

BITS Pilani Shifting Narrative from Highest to Median package to Foster Healthier Learning Environment

India, 19th October 2023: BITS Pilani, a renowned institution known for its commitment to innovation is taking a significant step towards inculcating a healthier academic environment. Starting this academic year, BITS Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad campuses have decided not to publicize their highest placement package. Instead, these campuses will focus on highlighting the average or median packages their graduates secure. This resolution stems from BITS Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ramgopal Rao’s perspective of addressing the enduring concerns among students and parent community about the unhealthy competition created by such monetary disclosures. This decision also aligns with BITS Pilani’s unwavering commitment to fostering a well-rounded and inclusive learning environment.

Shifting the narrative from the highest package to the median or average, will enable BITS Pilani to reduce the undue pressure that often accompanies the race for the highest salaries. At these BITS campuses in the AY2022-23 the domestic median salary has risen to 18 lakhs, a growth of 12% over the last AY 2021-22. The average domestic salary grew to reach 20.74 lakhs, a growth of 11 % over the last academic year, along with this the minimum salary also rose by 17% over the last year. Another important aspect has been the increase of 10% in the number of unique companies which have visited the campus this year for placements.

Speaking on the initiative, BITS Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ramgopal Rao said, “Recent incidents underscore the dire consequences of an excessively competitive environment and the need for changing the current landscape of higher education in India. BITS Pilani acknowledges that while striving for excellence is important, it should not come at the cost of mental health and well-being. This paradigm aligns with institute’s comprehensive mission to provide an education that prepares students not only for their careers but also for a fulfilling and a balanced life beyond the campus walls. Also, other similar institutions of such rich legacy and repute need to be aware of the impact of their practices on the mental and emotional well-being of the students. They must be willing to adapt and evolve, taking proactive measures to create an environment that fosters growth, learning, and, most importantly, the overall well-being of their students.”

The dire need for the country, as also outlined in the 2020 National Education Policy, is increasing the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in our higher educational institutions from the current ~27% to 50% in the next decade. This requires exploring options of developing many new educational institutions into better quality ones in addition to increasing the student count in existing high quality institutions. Keeping this in mind, BITS is in the process of augmenting its physical infrastructure in the coming years to reach a total student enrolment of 25000 in all of its campuses. This strategic endeavor is poised to position BITS Pilani institutions uniquely, as they strive to offer top-tier education at a significant scale.
