RoofPRO Joins The Complete Player Charity and Community Associations Institute for an Interactive Youth Camp Field Trip Event in Severn, MD

Severn, MD, August 09, 2023 — RoofPRO is proud to announce its participation in a unique and educational youth camp field trip event organized by The Complete Player Charity and Community Associations Institute. The event, taking place at The Church at Severn Run in Severn, MD, aims to empower children from low and moderate income families by teaching them about the abundance of opportunities in the trades industry. Through engaging role-play training and outreach activities, the event seeks to inspire the next generation of skilled professionals.

The event revolves around a captivating scenario, where a student Board and Association meeting unfolds. As part of the role-play, the students actively participate in voicing their concerns as homeowners. They simulate a persistent leak into an upper-floor unit and a flooded backyard, raising challenges that require professional assistance.

The student Board proceeds to solicit Request for Proposals (RFPs) from two contractors: Gary from AMG and Kelly Rae from RoofPRO. To make the experience more immersive, Gary and Kelly lead their groups of children in developing their respective proposals. This process involves various mathematical opportunities, including measurements, labor and materials estimations, fostering a hands-on learning environment.

Kelly Rae brings an impressive roof/gutter mockup, enabling the children to explore the intricacies of roofing and guttering systems. During the exercise, it is discovered that the roof leak has led to mold issues, requiring remediation. Enter Beth, who joins the scene to provide insight into the mold remediation process.

While the three groups of student “contractors” are busy developing their proposals, another character, Michelle, enters to present budget scenarios. The Board is tasked with discussing and voting for spending projects involving capital improvements and maintenance, providing real-life experience of making important financial decisions.

The highlight of the event is when the three contractor groups return to present their proposals to the Board/Association. The ensuing discussions foster collaborative problem-solving, allowing the young participants to devise solutions for both problems. The event encourages the students to consider loan or special assessment scenarios to finance the repairs, while also promoting collaboration among the contractors.

Dr. Mary J. Gallant Recognized as a Woman of Distinction for Fall 2023 by P.O.W.E.R.

(Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized). Each quarter, the publication chooses four women for its distinction award. These four noteworthy women deserve recognition for their exceptional accomplishments. They go the extra mile to achieve results and create a significant impact in their chosen profession.

About Dr. Mary J. Gallant
Dr. Mary J. Gallant is an associate professor of Sociology at Rowan University. She teaches classical social theory in the core of the sociology major. From 2007-2012, she served as chair of Sociology and continued as chair of the combined department of Sociology and Anthropology from 2013-2015.

One of Dr. Gallant’s greatest concerns is the growth of conflict and violence worldwide. She is a Holocaust scholar and teacher with an awareness of the Holocaust as a turning point in the lives of millions of European Jews. Her latest efforts in post-Holocaust research focus on the new anti-Semitism and what surviving genocide means globally for individuals and their families caught up in chaos.

Mary Gallant’s career began at a small liberal arts and sciences graduate school where she taught and developed grant proposals to support her own research and fund assistantships for graduate students. One of these research grants involved a community ethnography and in-depth interviews with Holocaust survivors who were still silent about their traumatic memories. In the interviews, they shared their experience of cruelty, hatred, and indifference, opening a window into the soul that inspires both grief and wonder. What they said left an imprint that is still sharp and clear in her memory.

Unfortunately, the Holocaust project was cut short by factors beyond her control, but Dr. Gallant remained determined. In part it was the urgency these survivors felt to have others carry their memory forward that moved her in 1994 to present a paper at the World Conference of Holocaust Scholars and Survivors, called Errinerung und die Zukunft II in Berlin, GDR. Her paper was titled, “Children and Adolescents in the Holocaust: Effects of Trauma” and it carried their words to all who were assembled. Thousands of people from all over the world attended that colloquium — survivors of the Holocaust, scholars and professionals from many walks of life. The colloquium went on from Germany to London and then Oxford.

Dr. Gallant’s second presentation was on rescue during the Holocaust. The watershed from that world conference alone had an exceptional effect on her presentations and publications for many years thereafter. In 2000, after the conference, Remembering for the Future (RFTF) at the University of South Florida, Palgrave published a three volume work edited by John K. Roth and Elisabeth Maxwell under the title, “Remembering for the Future; The Holocaust in an Age of Genocide” in which Dr. Gallant has a book chapter, “Social Dimensions of Rescue in the Holocaust,” Volume 2:254-270. More recently, Mary contributed another book chapter, “The Kindertransport: Gender and the Rescue of Jewish Children 1938-39,” in a volume out of the University of Washington Press edited by Myrna Goldenberg and Amy H. Shapiro titled, “Different Horrors, Same Hell; Gender and the Holocaust” (2013).

Some highlights of Dr. Gallant’s published work include her first book, “Coming of Age in the Holocaust: The Last Survivors Remember” (ISBN-7618-2403-0) in 2002. She is currently preparing a new edition of this work. It compared aspects of the survival process as emerging from the caring and ingenuity of survivors themselves while under captivity and abuse. Since effective teaching and earnest engagement of students is a life goal for her, she mainly prepared this book for her course, Sociology of the Holocaust. At the time, this course was proposed as new curriculum by Rowan University for students in the general B.A. program and the coordinate major in the then Education Department. Dr. Gallant’s recent work is presently underway reflecting on the Holocaust and Allied forces in WWII. It is expected to contribute to a socio-historical volume on military ethics and education.

An additional element of Dr. Gallant’s research is in the area of social network analysis. This research emphasis emerged out of her dissertation on medical school socialization. In 2013, she published a second book, “Friendship Networks in Medical School: A Network Analytic Approach to the Study of Social Solidarity” at the invitation of a German publisher specializing in dissertation research and interested in teamwork in different kinds of social networks. Work is now being prepared which focuses on the role of informal social support and medical student success.

Mary obtained a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Minnesota in December 1985. She is affiliated with the American Sociological Association and the Eastern Sociological Society. She has been showcased on the famous Reuters Billboard in Times Square in New York City and was featured on P.O.W.E.R. Radio with a podcast. She was also featured in the spring 2022 issue of P.O.W.E.R. Magazine as a Woman of Distinction.

In her spare time Mary enjoys nature walks, choral music, National Public Radio, J.S. Bach, and (backyard) bird-watching.

Palestine Writes Literature Festival Announces Program in Philadelphia

PALESTINE WRITES LITERATURE FESTIVAL RETURNS WITH AN OUTSTANDING LINE-UP OF WRITERS AND ARTISTS

PHILADELPHIA, PA (Aug 1, 2023) – Three years after Covid-19 forced the inaugural Palestine Writes Festival to be held virtually, the only Palestinian literature festival in North America is back with an impressive list of writers, artists, musicians, dancers, filmmakers, and other intellectuals. The festival will be held at the University of Pennsylvania’s historic Irvine Auditorium on September 22-24, 2023. One-off events will also take place in the days leading up to the festival’s opening on Friday.

Speakers include Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen, Arabic Booker Prize winner Ibrahim Nasrallah, celebrated filmmaker Darin Sallam, rock music legend Roger Waters, and dozens more renowned authors, such as Elias Khoury, Huzama Habayeb, Isabella Hammad, Sahar Mustafah, Suad Amiry, Salman AbuSitta, Gary Younge, Nur Masalha, and more.

The festival will be bilingual, with simultaneous translation for most sessions. The program and speaker list are published online, featuring 1) continuous children and YA programming; 2) Coffee & Books sessions; 3) Panel discussions; 4) Plenaries; 5) Hakawati oral storytelling; 6) An art exhibit; 7) Workshops; 8) Presentations; 9) A film screening, and; 10) Live performances.

The Cost and Rewards of Friendship. A discussion with Viet Thanh Nguyen, Gary Younge, Roger Waters, and Rachel Holmes on what it means to live ethically and in solidarity with Palestinian in the midst of an empire that holds Palestinian in contempt.

The Novel as a Historic Record. Lebanese writer Elias Khoury, Aboriginal Australian writer Ali Cobby Eckerman, and Viet Thanh Nguyen will talk about the ways in which novels correct, obfuscate, reinvent, or destabilize history.

Film director Darin Sallam, creator of Farha, a ground-breaking Palestinian film that streamed on Netflix and was Jordan’s submission for the Oscars, will talk about her film and Palestinian cinema in general.

Palestinian chefs Fadi Kattan, owner of Fawda Restaurant and akub London, and co-author of Craving Palestine, and Reem Assil, owner of Reem’s California and author of Arabiyyeh, will talk about Palestinian cuisine, food appropriation, and agricultural traditions cultivated over centuries in Palestine.

Al Ajaweed Dabke Troupe, traveling to Philadelphia from the Palestinian refugee camp of Baqa’a in Jordan, will perform Palestinian traditional line dance to folkloric songs.

The Festival will be the most dynamic gathering of Palestinian creatives in North America. In addition, the newly formed Palestine Writes Press will launch its first book, a translation and reprint of Ghassan Kanafani, at the Festival; the book was written by the Palestinian legendary writer’s widow, Anni Kanafani, and will feature a new foreword by Kanafani’s childhood friend Dr. Fadle Naqib, and an introduction by scholar and historian Louis Allday. The Press also plans to release an anthology of fiction, poetry, and other creative prose by Palestinians across the diaspora in 2024.

World Campus Connections Creates Strategic Funds

The first is a scholarship fund that will be established in the name of Luerene Brooks Caddle, mother of one of WCC’s co-founders. Mrs. Caddle was an incredibly strong Christian woman and proponent of advance education. Each scholarship recipient will exemplify the determination and Christian values that Mrs. Caddle demonstrated throughout her life. Today would have been Mrs. Caddle’s 90th birthday.

The second strategic fund will be an endowment created in the name of Christine Glantz, mother of WCC’s first donor. The fund was created as a lasting tribute to celebrate the life of Mrs. Glantz, and a way to continue to help others as she did through her teaching career, participation in community service, and endless dedication as a mother, wife, grandmother, and friend to many.

Together, these two funds will continue to help support the mission of WCC and provide the resources and support to further the education and careers of our young adults. WCC is proud to announce the Luerene Brooks Caddle Memorial Scholarship and the Christine Glantz Endowment Fund.
