Annemarie Estor Wins the 2024 Frederick Turner Prize for Poetry

At a time when poetry is shrinking in its range, in its form, and its ambition, Annemarie Estor stands out. Wildly inventive, her huge vocabulary spans every genre and field of discourse, her gentle irony shines a light into every civilizational secret, and her passionate love of life, even in our doubtful times, makes us feel that we are not at the end of things but at the beginning. Long poems like No Man’s Land Night and The Armpits of the Beast explore the mysterious underworld landscapes of our current civilization and the transformative realm of sexual desire, crossing boundaries that are cultural, moral, philosophical and political, and never entirely “correct.”

Estor is that rare phenomenon, the learned poet who is also spontaneous, comic, and passionate. Her curiosity extends across cultures and across the sciences. Her beautiful and sardonic Flemish translates into a new tone in English, one that is both self-assured and hopelessly self-revealing. Winner of two of the most important Flemish prizes, the Herman de Coninck Prize and the Jan Campert Prize, among many other honors, her work deserves to be internationally known.

Mundus Artium’s Frederick Turner Prize for 2024 thus goes to Annemarie Estor. They hope that the prize will spur more translations of her work in other languages.

The Frederick Turner Prize committee does not confine itself in its search for excellence to free verse poetry, but seeks to recognize the many shaped, sung, and crafted forms of poetry that have arisen independently in human cultures all over the world. Its chief criterion is beauty, and it reflects its namesake’s interest in a philosophy of esthetics that includes the evolution of the cosmos. The prize includes a personalized medal, a diploma, and an award of $1,000.

Richard Harteis’s Latest Collection of Poetry

New London, CT, April 08, 2024 –If a crumb falls from a table, it falls to the earth because of gravity. In space, there is no gravity, and a crumb becomes a kind of dangerous missile, a drop of water, or a tear, a fountainhead. Gravity is a function of time the poet tells us; in space there is no time.

So it is with these “crumbs,” written after too much sativa, mindful observations of the particulars of life, hence the title of Harteis’s new book, “CRUMBS.”

In his book letters to a young poet, Rilke says that everything will become easier, “if you trust in Nature, and what is simple in Nature in the small things that hardly anyone sees, and that can so suddenly become huge, immeasurable, if you have this love for what is humble, and try very simply as someone who serves to win the confidence of what seems poor.” And Richard Wilbur has described how fruitful an aesthetic is that focuses on things. “Nothing but in things,” the bard from New Jersey reminds us.

In his book, the Power of Now, and later in The New Earth, Eckhart Tolle tells us that the goal is look at reality with full attention, full consciousness. And so these small crumbs.

In legend one leaves crumbs by the wayside to find our way back home. What happens if a bird or some creature eats the crumbs we have carefully left to guide us? Are we lost? It is in placing the crumbs that matters. Paying attention to our life, marking the moments that have caused us to stop and make sense of what has just happened. Only an exercise in observation perhaps, but fruitful one hopes, or at least pleasurable for a reader: getting to know another human being in language. All art is an attempt to overcome our physical limitations, to transcend ourselves, and greet another with love.

Greater Kolkata College of Engineering under JIS Group organised the 3rd National Conference

Kolkata, 8th April 2024 Greater Kolkata College of Engin ring, under the esteemed aegis of JIS Group Education Initiatives, concluded the two-day-long event, the 3rd National Conference on Emerging Approaches Towards Sustainability (NCEATS-2024). In technical collaboration with the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) Kolkata chapter, the conference was held on April 5th and 6th, 2024. The primary objective of NCEATS-2024 was to provide a platform for academicians, engineers, and professionals from research laboratories and industry to share and exchange the latest advancements and findings in their respective fields. The conference featured oral presentations of technical papers across four diverse tracks over two days. NCEATS-2024 witnessed an overwhelming response, with 58 research papers in total among which 20 papers are from various states across the nation other than West Bengal. The accepted papers will be published in UGC Care and other indexing journals, thereby amplifying the dissemination of knowledge and bringing forward collaboration within the academic and industrial sectors. NCEATS-2024 stands as a token of commitment of Greater Kolkata College of Engineering and its partners to promote sustainable development through innovation and research. The conference serves as a vital platform for nurturing ideas, promoting interdisciplinary collaborations, and driving positive change toward a sustainable future.

Author Wesley Stein’s New Book, New Beginnings

Elwood City, PA, April 06, 2024 –Wesley Stein has completed his new book, “New Beginnings”: a coming-of-age story that follows along as Xander starts to be able to do things he has never been able to do before that are not even possible. On top of that, a handful of kids in his school start to experience the same thing, including the mysterious new girl.

Growing up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania made author Wesley Stein much of who he is today. The tight-knit community fueled his imagination and inspired much of his writing. He has always loved being in nature and sitting outside. Listening to birds helped him in his writing. Music has had a significant impact on Wesley’s life. Someone in his house is always singing or playing an instrument, himself included. Past classmates and other people whom he has met in life have been an influence on his novel; some of them even inspired select characters. Wesley hopes to continue following his creative spirit in future novels he will write someday.

Wesley writes, “The orphanage in which she is currently living is in agreement with the US Military. They started this program in which once you turn sixteen, the government will adopt you per se and train you in multiple aspects of the military—how to hold a gun, how to hold your own in a fight, and which wire to cut. Once eighteen, you can join whichever aspect of the military you want; and two years later, they will pay for college if you so wish. It is a nice program, and a lot of kids who haven’t been adopted take up the offer. But she is not like most kids.”

TMSA Student Placed Second in the Technology Division in NC Science Fair

Cary, NC, April 04, 2024 –TMSA Cary student Diana Zavadskaia competed at the NC State Fair under Junior Division and won second place in the technology division.

Her project focuses on artificial hearts. The project shows the process of designing and actual 3D printing of an original artificial heart, as well as an experiment that puts the invention to test. She became interested in this topic right when they started the anatomy unit dedicated to hearts in school. Since then, she has been studying independently and began focusing on artificial hearts. This was her first year of competition above the school level.

There is also a chance to be promoted to the national level and travel to a different state where the students from all the US will spend a week talking about research and presenting their projects.

Diana said, “It amazed me that something so essential can be replaced. I hope one day my research and inventions can be used in the medical field.”

Author J.M. Vessard’s New Book Portals to the Infinite
