"Unprotected: The Link Between Missed Vaccines and Cancer Risks"
By
Dr. N. Senthil Kumar PhD,

Missing the HPV vaccine in the immunization schedule can leave individuals vulnerable to HPV infection and its associated complications, including cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers. If someone has missed receiving the HPV vaccine according to the recommended schedule, they need to catch up on their vaccination as soon as possible.
HPV VACCINE
Boys and girls aged 9 -12 should receive the HPV vaccine. To be effective, the vaccination should be completed by age 13. 9vHPV administration is an intramuscular (IM) injection in the deltoid region or anterior lateral thigh area. Current vaccination recommendations are based on the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
Age 9 to 15 years: Two doses of the HPV vaccine are recommended for most patients. The second dose of the HPV vaccine is administered 6 to 12 months after the first dose. Adolescents who have received two doses less than five months apart require a third dose of the HPV vaccine.
Age 15 to 26 years: Three doses of the HPV vaccine are recommended for teens and young adults who start the series at 15 through 26 years. The recommended three-dose schedule is 0, 1 to 2, and 6 months. Three doses are recommended for a patient with immune-
compromised conditions (e.g., HIV infection, immunosuppressive therapy)
Age 27 to 45 years: Most adults in this age group would have very minimal benefits from vaccination. Individuals who are not already immunized to HPV (e.g., a previously unvaccinated person who has never had sex) and the person at risk for acquiring a newer
HPV infection shortly (e.g., who plans to have sex with a new partner) might benefit from vaccination.
Debunking Myths and Misconceptions: The route of HPV transmission is primarily through skin-to-skin or skin-to-mucosa contact. Sexual transmission is the most documented, but there have been studies suggesting non-sexual courses. The horizontal transfer of HPV includes fomites, fingers, and mouth, skin contact (other than sexual).
Vertical transmission from mother to child is another HPV transfer course. Several studies have emphasized the possibility of infection through the amniotic fluid, or the placenta, or via contact with maternal genital mucosa during natural birth.
Overcoming Barriers to Vaccination: While the HPV vaccine offers significant benefits, barriers to vaccination persist, including cost, access, and cultural factors. Efforts to increase vaccine accessibility, such as implementing school-based vaccination programs and
subsidizing vaccine costs, are essential in reaching underserved populations. Additionally, culturally sensitive education initiatives can address cultural beliefs and promote vaccine acceptance within diverse communities.
HPV Vaccination for Men’s Health: While cervical cancer is often associated with HPV, the virus can also cause other cancers in men, including anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. By getting vaccinated, men can significantly reduce their risk of developing these types of cancers later in life.

Uncovering the Thyroid Harmony with an Emphasis on the Integrated Function of Physiotherapy
By Dr.Jeslin.G.N (PT), Lecturer at Saveetha College of Physiotherapy, Chennai, MPT (Urology and Obstetrics), (PhD) Department of Urology and Obstetrics,
Saveetha College of Physiotherapy, SIMATS, Chennai
The thyroid gland is a key player in the complex dance of human health, directing a metabolic harmony symphony that permeates every facet of our health. However, when thyroid conditions upset this delicate balance, the consequences affect our bodies, brains, and spirits in ways that go well beyond simple symptoms of illness. In this piece, we explore the significant impact that thyroid problems have on overall health, emphasizing the integrated role that physiotherapy plays in re-establishing balance.
THE MIND
Anxiety, depression, and cognitive fog are just a few of the ways that thyroid issues can have a negative impact on one’s psychological well-being. The constant weariness and mood swings can sap our energy and happiness and test our fortitude. By recognizing the multifaceted connection amongst thyroid function and mental health, we allow people to look for all-encompassing support, such as mindfulness training and psychiatric counseling.
THE BODY
Thyroid dysfunction presents a wide range of physical symptoms, from palpitations and weight loss in hyperthyroidism to lethargy and sluggishness in hypothyroidism. These symptoms cause major dangers to reproductive health and cardiovascular health in addition to interfering with day-to-day functioning. This is where physiotherapy’s encompassing approach excels, delivering individualized exercise plans, postural correction, and manual therapies to reduce pain and increase range of motion.
SPIRIT
The care of the spirit, the part of ourselves that yearns for resilience, connection, and purpose, is the fundamental component of holistic healing. This essential base can be undermined by thyroid abnormalities, which makes people feel disenchanted with their bodies and discouraged by their difficulties. By means of physiotherapy along with other integrated therapies, we may light the flame of resilience and cultivate a sense of energy and independence that extends beyond the boundaries of sickness.
In summary, the path to thyroid harmony includes not just the physical realm but also the mental and spiritual domains. We the Department of Urology and Obstetrics at Saveetha College of Physiotherapy, SIMATS, Chennai clear the way for overall well-being and lively life by educating and practicing ways for adopting an integrated strategy that recognizes the interdependence of these dimensions. Elevate the standard of thyroid harmony and let’s set off on a path to recovery andmetamorphosis that links to the core of our being.

Kenvue collaborates with Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) Neonatology Chapter
National, 13 February 2024 – Kenvue, the world’s largest pure-play consumer health company by revenue, released its latest consensus on ‘Recommendations for Neonatal Skincare Protocols for Hospitalized Neonate’ endorsed by the IAP Neonatology Chapter. The comprehensive recommendations were officially unveiled at PEDICON 2024 which is the 61st National Conference of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics at the IAP Neonatology Chapter, a prestigious medical conference for pediatricians and neonatologists. The recommendations aim to provide neonatologists in India with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for neonatal skin care in hospitalized neonates and implement skincare protocols grounded in scientific principles and empirical evidence.

Neonates in NICU are at a high risk of skin barrier impairment due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors including infection due to thermal imbalance, fluid and electrolyte loss, skin injury, and sepsis leading to increased mortality and morbidity. These complications, however, can be reduced if NICUs have established evidence-based skincare protocols and perform skin assessments as an integral part of management.
Today, there are multiple approaches to the quality of neonatal skincare practices in NICUs that impact neonatal outcomes including survival. The consensus intends to bridge this gap by providing clinical recommendations on neonatal skincare in hospitalized neonates.
The recommendations have been built by adopting the Delphi methodology which incorporates views from a scientific advisory board comprising eminent pediatricians and neonatologists across specialties including Dr. R Kishore Kumar, Dr. Arun Inamadar, Dr. Alok Bhandari, Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Dr. Kheya Uttam Ghosh, Dr. J K Mittal and Dr. Pradeep Suryawanshi, Dr. Sanjay Wazir and Dr. Satyen Hemrajani and moderated by Dr. Naveen Bajaj, Chairperson, IAP Neonatology Chapter.
The recommendations provide practical guidance on neonatal skin care for babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) including the need for neonatal skin assessment for early identification and treatment of skin problems through screening tools and risk assessment frameworks, the importance of hygiene in NICU babies through stringent hand hygiene practices, cleansing for newborns to reduce infections, when and how to bathe the baby, cleansing with appropriately formulated wipes with mild cleansing agents. Additionally, the paper also covers aspects related to the usage of emollients in preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), umbilical cord care, perineal care, Neurodevelopmental Care and regimen, and parent Education during discharge.
Manish Anandani, Managing Director, Kenvue India* said, “When it comes to newborn care, there exist broad variations in routine skin care practices in NICUs in India. With our latest recommendations, we aim to ensure that every newborn not only survives but thrives by providing healthcare professionals with a comprehensive guide of standardized evidence-based skincare protocols. We are proud to release these recommendations in partnership with the IAP Neonatology Chapter to significantly improve the health of newborns.”
Dr. Naveen Bajaj, Chairperson, of the IAP Neonatology Chapter said, “Comprehensive care of neonates admitted in NICU is the key for their survival and early discharge. Skincare of these newborn babies forms an essential aspect of their overall management plan, and is of critical importance in extremely preterm babies, these evidence-based guidelines will help streamline the practice of neonatal skin care, helping to contribute to improved overall neonatal morbidity and mortality, especially the extreme preterm newborns.”
