World Cancer Day: Vedanta Aluminium leads the way to build awareness on cancer prevention
New Delhi; 06th February 2024: On World Cancer Day, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, reaffirmed its commitment to providing the best healthcare facilities and support to cancer patients, particularly those hailing from rural areas. On the occasion, Vedanta Group’s Raipur-based state-of-the-art cancer facility and one of India’s leading cancer care hospitals, BALCO Medical Centre (BMC), organised a series of cancer awareness activities in Chhattisgarh, focused on promoting prevention, detection, and treatment of the disease. BMC’s efforts were aligned with the theme ‘Closing the Care Gap’ by bringing cancer care to people’s doorsteps through a mammography van equipped with screenings for breast, cervix, and head & neck cancers – the 3 most common cancers in India as well as opening a chemotherapy daycare centre in the heart of Raipur so patients don’t have to travel far for chemotherapy. Similar activities and awareness camps were organised by BALCO in Korba, in collaboration with the NGO Help Age India.

World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4th, is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about cancer and acknowledging the tenacity demonstrated daily by cancer fighters and survivors. As part of the activities, BMC also organised awareness sessions in schools and societies and a cancer awareness walk in the Raipur city. Along with this, BMC also announced a special offer on preventive cancer screening packages and pharmacy and a free second opinion for cancer patients.
Since its inception in 2018, BMC has served the needs of over 35,000 patients, addressing existing gaps in domestic cancer awareness and treatment. It is the most preferred oncology hospital in central India for advanced radiation therapy, brachytherapy, nuclear medicine, surgeries, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood-related disorders, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and pain & palliative care. This cutting-edge medical facility features 170 beds and state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. BALCO Medical Centre is bridging the gaps in domestic cancer treatment, awareness, infrastructure, and expertise. Furthermore, the centre has formed alliances with prestigious institutions in the field, including the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in Mumbai and Anuva, a transnational research company specializing in genomics biotech.
On the occasion, Ms. Jyoti Agarwal, Chairperson of BALCO Medical Centre, said, “World Cancer Day serves as a reminder that the battle against cancer is fought not only in clinics and laboratories but also in the hearts and minds of those affected. At BALCO Medical Centre, we are committed to providing people in rural areas with access to quality healthcare and bridge the universal healthcare gap, promoting awareness, and eliminating the stigma associated with cancer and promoting early detection and care, thereby fostering an environment of empathy and resilience.”
Speaking about BALCO Medical Centre’s role in creating awareness around the illness, Dr Bhawna Sirohi, Medical Director of BMC, “The delay in cancer diagnosis means patients are not cured, suffer from financial & time toxicity, and the catastrophic expenditure pushes them more into poverty – this is counterproductive for our country’s heath. On this World Cancer Day, BALCO Medical Centre organized a series of cancer awareness camps to promote early diagnosis of the disease which will lead to higher cure rates, elevate quality of life, and reduce the cost and duration of treatment, thereby contributing to a healthier nation. Destigmatizing cancer was at the heart of all the initiatives conducted on that day.”
Established by the Vedanta Medical Research Foundation (VMRF) and backed by the Anil Agarwal Foundation (AAF), BALCO Medical Centre is making a difference in the lives of lakhs of people through increased access to quality medical care. BMC’s extensive roster of renowned cancer specialists regularly organises efforts to educate individuals on the cruciality of timely preventive screening and mitigation measures against various forms of cancer. Dedicated medical experts from the centre reach out to students, working professionals and other community members through several platforms such as awareness talks, health camps, and webinars. Along with cancer treatment, all patients at BALCO Medical Centre also receive robust psychological, nutritional and physical therapy, in addition to membership in patient support groups for emotional support during their care period.

The panel discussion was moderated by Hari Mohan, a first-class cricketer, and former Ranji Cricket Player.
MS—Multiple Sclerosis patients no longer need to be called so, I call MS Patients Most Special patients, said Dr Sudhir Kumar, a renowned Neurologist currently working in Apollo Hospitals said. Speaking about the book, Dr Sudhir said, this book has so many things which many doctors are not aware of nor any neurological books talk about. The treatment goes beyond medication. And those things which go beyond treatment are found in this book he said.
Meena Gupta said MS patients are not covered under Insurance. So the theme for this year’s MS Day was #InsureMyMS. She sought support for MS patients in getting disability certificates from the government without much hassle.
A video film was screened to sensitise people about MS at the beginning of the program
Though its prevalence was higher in the West, now there is a rise in these cases in India. Eight to nine people per one lakh population is estimated to be suffering from MS. India has a disease burden of roughly 2.5 lakh. The number is estimated to be higher than stated, as not many people are diagnosed due to the lack of awareness. Manish Sisodia’s wife is a well-known case of multiple sclerosis currently. The Telugu states have around 200 MS patients registered with the MS Society of Hyderabad.
MS is an auto-immune disease. The awareness about this condition is inferior to the public. What many don’t know is that with the right diagnosis, timely treatment, care and support many people can lead long, active and healthy lives.

A Healthful Affair: Kavita Devgan Hosts High-Tea
January 31, 2024, New Delhi
India is a fast-growing market for American pistachios as consumers here find out more about the health benefits of regularly consuming these delectable nuts.
The Indian office of American Pistachios Growers (APG), organized a knowledge session to talk about the nutritive properties of pistachios on January 24, 2024, in New Delhi. The event was attended by a diverse consumer group including nutritionists, media professionals, business entrepreneurs, and lifestyle influencers.
The session especially focused on a recent study conducted by Cornell University and published in the journal Nutrients that found that pistachios have a high antioxidant capacity. The antioxidant capacity of pistachios rivals that of popular antioxidant-containing foods, including blueberries, pomegranates, cherries, and red wine. The researchers used two different methods to measure the antioxidant potential of pistachios – Oxygen Radical absorbance Capacity (ORAC) and Cellular Antioxidant Activity (CAA) – and found that pistachios have very high levels of antioxidant activity.
Generally, most health professionals recommend antioxidants from food sources to help protect healthy cells from free radical damage in the body.
Pistachios are one of the very few foods high in antioxidants that are also a complete protein. This makes them perfect for people who want a more plant-based diet. Research conducted and published in 2020 has shown that California-grown pistachios are a complete protein; which means that they contain all 9 essential amino acids that your body needs. These types of complete proteins are only found from animal sources. Vegetarians need to balance this with supplements. Pistachios are a natural source.
Pistachios are also low in calories when compared to other nuts. One serving of pistachios (49 nuts) is only 160 calories making them a great anytime guilt-free snack.

Speaking on the occasion Ms. Kavita Devgan a leading Dietitian, holistic health consultant, and eminent writer said “We live in challenging times, and it is important to consciously include superfoods rich in antioxidants in our diet to help protect our bodies from free radical damage. Equally important is ensuring an adequate daily intake of protein, as it serves as the building blocks for muscle regeneration and repair. American pistachios have both of these powers. Since they are shelf-stable and easily portable, I suggest consuming a handful of American pistachios daily by all”.
Speaking on the Indian market Mr. Sumit Saran, In-Country Marketing Representative of American Pistachios Growers remarked. “We have seen tremendous demand for American pistachios, as people are getting more aware. They are great as a snack or as an ingredient. American pistachios are available on all major e-commerce platforms or with major dry fruit retailers. All consumers have to do is search for California pistachios.

10 Fascinating Facts Redefining Robotic Heart Surgery
Robotic surgery is becoming increasingly popular, and the good news is, it’s not about replacing surgeons with machines. Instead, these robots assist surgeons by enhancing precision and enabling operations in tighter spaces. The use of smaller incisions reduces the chances of complications and accelerates the healing process.
Thanks to advancements in robotic technology, heart surgeons now endorse it for procedures like mitral valve repair and coronary artery bypass surgery. Almost anyone can qualify for robotic heart surgery, except for individuals who are extremely unwell or have undergone previous chest surgeries.
The Precision of Robotic Surgery
Robotic cardiac surgery is a type of heart surgery where small cuts are made in the chest. With tiny instruments and robot-controlled tools, surgeons perform the surgery with much smaller incisions than open-heart surgery. Sometimes called da Vinci surgery, named after the robot manufacturer, this approach allows surgeons to sit at a computer console, viewing a high-definition video of the patient’s body through a camera on an endoscope.
Unlike traditional surgery where the surgeon stands over the patient, in robotic surgery, the surgeon manipulates devices from the console, controlling surgical instruments at the end of robotic arms. The robot mimics the surgeon’s hand movements with remarkable precision, even compensating for any hand tremors using special software programming. This method offers a less invasive way to perform heart surgery.
Robotic heart surgery offers precise solutions for various cardiac conditions, including mitral and tricuspid valve repair/replacement, combined valve surgeries, atrial fibrillation ablation, atrial septal defect, patent foramen ovale repair, and cardiac tumor removal. This minimally invasive approach revolutionizes treatment across a spectrum of complex cardiac cases, demonstrating its versatility and transformative impact on cardiovascular care.
Benefits derived from robotic heart surgery
Minimal Trauma: Robotic heart surgery accesses the heart through small chest incisions, contrasting with the larger incision required in traditional surgery, resulting in reduced trauma for patients and lowering the risk of complications.
AI-driven precision: The incorporation of artificial intelligence into robotic systems elevates accuracy by analyzing live data, aiding surgeons in making well-informed decisions during intricate cardiac procedures.
Faster Recovery: Smaller incisions lead to a typically faster recovery process, allowing patients to return to normal activities and work sooner, enhancing overall satisfaction.
Reduced Blood Loss: The use of smaller incisions in robotic surgery often means less blood loss during the procedure, decreasing or eliminating the need for blood transfusions.
Shorter Hospital Stays: Quicker overall recovery translates to shorter hospital stays, contributing to a more efficient and patient-friendly healthcare experience.
Lower Pain Levels: The smaller incision is generally less painful for patients, as it avoids the need to split the breastbone, providing a more comfortable postoperative experience.
Enhanced Visualization: Robotic-assisted surgery provides enhanced visualization for surgeons, resulting in more precise procedures and improved patient outcomes. Advanced 3D imaging in robotic-assisted surgeries offers a detailed and immersive view of the patient’s anatomy, facilitating the navigation of complex structures within the heart with greater ease.
Improved Surgeon Performance: Surgeons benefit from a greater range of motion and enhanced dexterity during robotic-assisted procedures, further improving the overall surgical process.
Remote Precision: Telepresence surgery, facilitated by robotic systems, enables skilled surgeons to perform remote operations. This capability proves especially advantageous in delivering specialized care to individuals in distant or underserved regions, effectively overcoming geographical barriers to healthcare access.
International Cooperation in Robotic Surgery: Utilizing robotic systems, surgeons from different parts of the world can engage in real-time collaboration, nurturing a worldwide network of skills and enabling the exchange of knowledge to perpetually enhance robotic heart surgery.

Inspiring Saga: This Renowned Doctor Has Been Participated In Mumbai Marathon For 15 Years
Mumbai: Numerous experts join the Mumbai marathon to support various noble causes such as organ donation, and raising awareness about liver and lung diseases, Covid-19, or stroke. However, Dr. Chetan Shah, a cardiologist at Zynova Shalby Multi-Speciality Hospital in Ghatkopar, has been participating in the marathon for the past 15 years with a specific focus on promoting heart health. His primary goal is to demonstrate that staying physically fit after undergoing Angioplasty and bypass surgery is achievable and to debunk the misconception that it’s impossible. Each year, approximately 10-15 post-angioplasty and post-bypass surgery patients undergo cardiac screening before joining him in the race covering 21 kilometers. This doctor’s story serves as an inspiration and challenges the notion that exercising after angioplasty and bypass surgery is ill-advised.

The Mumbai marathon is not just a race but it’s a vibrant carnival that brings together people from all walks of life. What sets this event apart is the active participation of doctors and patients alike, all united in their purpose to promote health causes. For doctors and healthcare professionals, their involvement in the marathon goes beyond just physical activity, it’s a powerful statement advocating for better health practices and raising awareness about various medical conditions. Alongside them, patients who have triumphed over their health battles take center stage, inspiring others with their resilience and determination. One encouraging story is of Dr Chetan Shah, a cardiologist at Zynova Shalby Multi-Speciality Hospital in Ghatkopar who has been participating in the Marathon for the past 15 years to highlight how to exercise after angioplasty and bypass surgery.

Dr Chetan Shah said, “While it is believed that running or exercising after angioplasty and bypass surgery is dangerous, the truth is quite the opposite. Regular physical activity can significantly improve the overall health and well-being of individuals who have undergone angioplasty or bypass surgery. Even studies have confirmed that engaging in moderate exercise like walking, cycling, or swimming can help patients recover faster, strengthen their hearts, and reduce the risk of future cardiovascular issues. Exercise has been proven to positively impact mood and mental health, which is crucial for those recovering from major surgery. Staying physically active can help maintain a healthy weight and reduce the likelihood of developing other chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. We as doctors need to debunk the myth that post- angioplasty and post-bypass patients should avoid exercise and instead encourage them to establish a suitable workout routine based on their individual capabilities and recovery progress. With the right guidance and support, physical activity forms an integral part of rehabilitation after angioplasty or bypass surgery.”
Dr Shah added, “I pledge to stay committed to improving the quality of life of patients after angioplasty or bypass surgery as they have the right to live a normal life. Over the years, I have encouraged my patients to participate in the marathon. Before the race day, we conduct every patient’s cardiac screening Those who are found to be fit can only participate in the race. During the race, the patient’s BP is monitored along with adequate hydration. I feel proud to see my patients following instructions and completing the race, defying previous beliefs about exercising post-angioplasty or post-bypass surgery. So, exercising after the angioplasty or bypass is feasible, provided it’s done under medical supervision and going for regular cardiac screening with all health parameters in check.”
“It’s hard to believe that just a few months ago, I was lying on the operating table undergoing angioplasty surgery. The road to recovery was long and arduous, filled with uncertainty and fear. But against all odds, I not only survived but thrived. And today, I stand before you as a proud finisher of a marathon race. This year I am going to run a half marathon. This year I am going to run a half marathon. The journey from the hospital bed to the marathon finish line was not easy. But, Dr Shah gave us the confidence and motivation to bounce back after the surgery and resume a normal life like before. Don’t believe any myths, it is possible to start exercising after the bypass surgery,” Concluded post angioplasty Patient Amubhai.
