Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta’s Breakthrough: Treating 87-Year-Old’s Severe Heart Blockages

Anantapur, 6th May 2024: Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, successfully treated Mr. Reddy, an 87-year-old resident from Anantapur, who experienced severe breathlessness and chest pain. These symptoms led to the diagnosis of critical heart blockages caused by calcium deposits. Dr. Srinivas Prasad BV, Consultant-Interventional Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, used the state-of-the-art Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) technology to address the complexities of Mr. Reddy’s condition. This innovative technique breaks down the calcium while minimizing vessel wall trauma allowing the surgery to be completed efficiently within 45 minutes. Mr. Reddy was able to go home just three days following the procedure, marking another success in advanced cardiac care by Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta.

Mr. Reddy was referred to Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta due to the unavailability of the required resources in Anantapur to perform the surgery. After a comprehensive evaluation, it was revealed that Mr. Reddy had experienced a mild heart attack caused by the calcific blockages in his coronary arteries. The blockages led to chest pain and breathlessness, impacting his daily activities. Given the urgency and complexity of his case, Dr. Srinivas Prasad BV opted for a minimally invasive procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to open the blocked arteries and restore normal blood flow. This procedure was complemented using Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) technology, which efficiently breaks down the calcium deposits while minimizing damage to the vessel wall.

Therefore, we opted to proceed with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) and Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) to open the blocked arteries, restore normal blood flow, and crush the calcium deposits. Following the crushing of the calcium deposits, a balloon was inserted into the artery to open the arterial blocks, and a stent (a small, metal mesh tube) was placed inside the blockages to help keep them open.”

Diving into the details, a 30-year-old pregnant woman with Non-Cirrhotic Portal Hypertension (NCPH) came to the Star Hospitals at Financial District when she was 17 weeks into her pregnancy, presenting a complex medical challenge. During her assessment, doctors discovered she had grade 3 varices with RCS, an enlarged spleen, and a low platelet count of just 35,000. She was referred to BirthRight by Rainbow Hospitals for a safe delivery.

The multi-disciplinary team at Rainbow Children’s Hospital and BirthRight by Rainbow along with Star Hospitals, Financial District took on her case, assessing her condition and discussing the associated risks with her. They explained to her that she could face potential complications, including variceal bleeding, spontaneous abortion, and premature delivery.

The patient was prescribed beta blockers and was closely monitored throughout the pregnancy paying special attention to her coagulation levels, fetal heart rate, and the health of her baby.

As the pregnancy progressed, she eventually underwent a cesarean section. As liver conditions impact the bleeding factors and coagulation profile of the patient, this patient was carefully managed with the use of TEG to assess and provide necessary corrections to her coagulation and to control bleeding intra and post-operatively.

“She has been diagnosed with Non-Cirrhotic Portal Hypertension (NCPH) during pregnancy. The blood vessels in the liver become engorged, causing portal hypertension. This condition resulted in her spleen enlargement with dilated blood vessels over the food pipe, known as varices. Such patients are at high risk of bleeding or liver failure, compounded by the added complexity of pregnancy.”, noted Dr. Srinivasa Reddy, Consultant Hepatology & Liver Transplant Physician at Star Hospitals Financial District.

Unmasking Primary Immune Disorders: ACC spearheads raising awareness and the battle against PIDs

In commemoration of the World Primary Immunodeficiency Week, observed from April 22nd to 29th, ACC spearheads discussions around this crucial health issue, shedding light on its prevalence and impact.

Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders represent a group of inherited conditions that compromise the body’s immune system, leaving individuals susceptible to infections. Shockingly, a significant portion of individuals with PIDs remain undiagnosed, leading to untreated complications and heightened risks. Despite the widespread impact of PIDs, there is alarmingly high mortality rates among affected infants, particularly those below one-year-old. Undiagnosed cases significantly contribute to this concerning statistic. While PIDs tends to be more severe in children, it can also affect adults, albeit with differing diagnostic challenges. In adults, the road to diagnosis may be prolonged, sometimes spanning up to 25 years from the onset of initial symptoms to an accurate PID diagnosis. This delay underscores the importance of heightened awareness and proactive screening initiatives to ensure timely medical intervention and improved outcomes for individuals affected by PID.

Over 6 million people globally suffer from PIDs, with an alarming 70-90% of cases remaining undiagnosed

In India, where consanguineous marriages are prevalent, the incidence of PIDs is notably high, exacerbating the challenge. It is estimated that there could be more than one million patients with PID in India. Since PID is a genetic condition, there is a chance of every pregnancy being affected. Prenatal diagnosis or testing the foetus at 10 to 11 weeks for pregnancy can help detect whether the foetus is affected or not and families need to be counselled accordingly.

According to WHO (World Health Organization and IUIS (International Immunological Societies), over 120 Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders (PIDs) exist, with antibody deficiencies like CVID (Common Variable Immunodeficiency), and XLA (X-linked Agammaglobulinemia), topping the list.

Virinchi Hospitals Hosts Neonatal Resuscitation Workshop to Combat Oxygen-Related Neonatal Mortality

Hyderabad,2nd May 2024: Virinchi Hospitals, a pioneer in healthcare services in Hyderabad, hosted a specialized workshop on Neonatal Resuscitation for the nursing staff, today at Virinchi Hospital, Banjara Hills. This vital program was organized by senior consultant Pediatrician Dr. Vannala Raju, with esteemed faculty members including Dr. Purna Guggilum, KIMS Cuddles; Dr. Vaddi Vamsi Krishna, Rainbow Children’s Hospital; and Dr. Raju himself.

The workshop focused on critical resuscitation techniques necessary for caring for newborns immediately after birth. More than 50 nursing professionals from various hospitals in & around the city participated in this engaging and informative session, acquiring skills that are crucial in reducing brain damage due to lack of oxygen immediately after birth (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy – HIE) —a common yet preventable threat to newborns.

India’s current neonatal mortality rate stands at approximately 20 deaths per 1,000 live births and conditions such as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) because of poor cry/inability of the baby to breathe immediately after birth contribute significantly to neonatal deaths. It is estimated that 1.5 babies per 1,000 live births in India are affected by HIE, making it a crucial area for intervention.

Dr. Vannala Raju, who spearheaded the workshop, emphasized the importance of equipping nursing staff with the knowledge and techniques to administer immediate care. “Through this workshop, we aim to disseminate knowledge and skills to reduce neonatal mortality and enhance the quality of care provided right at the moment of birth,” said Dr. Raju.

The training covered a range of topics crucial to newborn care, including the effective management of breathing and cardiovascular stabilization. The workshop’s hands-on approach ensured that the nursing staff could practice and master these lifesaving techniques in a controlled, supportive environment.
