Aster Medcity Introduces Excimer Laser Angioplasty for Cardiovascular Patients

Kochi, 04 -May-2024: Aster Medcity launched the latest advancement in cardiovascular care with the introduction of Excimer Laser Angioplasty. This revolutionary technology of PLS Excimer Laser System marks a milestone in plaque modification for both Coronary and Peripheral Arteries, offering a comprehensive solution for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions.

The PLS Excimer Laser System stands out as the sole laser system with a broad spectrum of clinical indications, including to Lead Extraction Procedures. Utilizing a specially designed ELCA Catheter, this system facilitates the recanalization of occluded arteries, modifies lesion morphology, and optimizes treatment options, addressing the challenges faced by both patients and doctors. It is a clinically proven technology which is safe and is the only atherectomy equipment showing superiority in safety and efficacy with clinical evidence.

“Excimer Laser therapy provides solutions for various cardiovascular issues, including severe blood clots, challenging lesions, and balloon failure during conventional angioplasty procedures, “ said Dr. Anil Kumar R, Senior Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, Aster Medcity-Kochi.

Laser angioplasty offers several advantages, including higher success rates and better results in complex interventions, particularly beneficial in cases of highly thrombotic lesions by avoiding low reflow or no-reflow phenomena without the necessity for distal protective devices. It demonstrates significant improvement in instances of in-stent restenosis, often avoiding the need for a new stent insertion.

In addition to its primary applications, Laser angioplasty highly used for thrombotic lesions during percutaneous coronary intervention in acute myocardial infarction and acute coronary syndromes. It is a key tool for angioplasty of under-expanded stents and facilitates the modification of the proximal cap of calcified lesions that are otherwise challenging to cross with a wire. Similar blockages in peripheral arteries, carotids, and other vascular territories are addressed. It also plays a vital role in the extraction of previously implanted pacemaker leads

By emitting a cool beam of ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 308 nanometers, the Excimer Laser precisely breaks down, vaporizes, and removes arterial obstructions through pulsed photoablation, ensuring minimal tissue damage and maximal efficacy. In a laser angioplasty procedure, a catheter is inserted into an artery that emits advanced laser light ray that eliminates tough blockages in its path that could not have been achieved with conventional angioplasty. This procedure eliminates the conventional need for open-heart surgery in many patients, enhancing the quality of life for the patient, while also enabling the patient to go back home within 24 hours of the procedure.

“The latest model of the Excimer Laser system installed at Aster Medcity has enhanced features, including a smaller footprint, rapid readiness in less than 30 seconds, and touchscreen-guided workflow for seamless operability. This advancement enables its utilization even in acute myocardial infarction cases, delivering timely and precise cardiovascular care, said Dr. Rajasekhar Varma, Senior Consultant- Interventional Cardiology, Aster Medcity-Kochi.

“It is to be noted that Excimer Laser Angioplasty cardiovascular intervention, offers precision care, shorter hospital stays, and enhanced quality of life for patients”, commented Dr. Rajiv C, Senior Consultant – Interventional Cardiology , Aster Medcity-Kochi.

Farhaan Yasin- Aster India Vice President, Senior Consultants from the Interventional Cardiology, Aster Medcity- Dr. Anil Kumar R, Dr. Rajiv C and Dr. Rajasekhar Varma, and Consultant Dr. Sandeep R attended the press conference held in Kochi.
