Mumbai, April 21(BNP): Mumbai Indians delivered a commanding all-round performance to secure a resounding 99-run victory over Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2026 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Arriving at a venue that has historically posed challenges and amid a difficult run of form, Mumbai Indians rose to the occasion with a clinical display. The innings was anchored by Tilak Varma, who registered his maiden IPL century with an unbeaten 101 off 45 balls, guiding MI to a formidable 199/5 in 20 overs.
After a measured start—scoring 19 off his first 22 deliveries Tilak Varma shifted gears dramatically, adding 82 runs from his next 23 balls. His knock came at a crucial juncture after early setbacks caused by Kagiso Rabada, and proved pivotal in setting up a challenging total.
In response, Gujarat Titans struggled to build any momentum as Mumbai’s bowlers dominated proceedings from the outset. Early breakthroughs from Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya put the hosts on the back foot, while Ashwani Kumar delivered a standout performance with a four-wicket haul. Support from Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar ensured Gujarat Titans were bowled out for 100 in 15.5 overs.

ITRHD Observes World Heritage Day with Renewed Focus on Rural Sustainability
New Delhi, April 19, 2026:
The Indian Trust for Rural Heritage and Development (ITRHD) celebrated World Heritage Day with a special programme in New Delhi, bringing together policymakers, scholars and cultural voices to deliberate on the preservation of India’s rural heritage, aligned with this year’s theme — “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters.” The occasion also marked 15 years of ITRHD’s work in the field of heritage conservation.
The event was graced by Manish Tewari, Member of Parliament, as the Chief Guest, in the presence of Padma Bhushan Shri S. K. Misra, Chairman, ITRHD.
The programme featured addresses by distinguished speakers including Dasho Sonam Kinga (Former Chairman of the National Council of Bhutan), Geshe Dorji Damdul (Head of Tibet House, New Delhi), and Kartikeya Vajpai (Author). The event was also attended by Archana Capoor (Member Secretary, ITRHD) and members and representatives of ITRHD.
Addressing the gathering, Manish Tewari highlighted the urgent need to prioritise heritage conservation in the context of ongoing global conflicts. “Given the scale of ongoing international conflicts since 2022, the conservation of historical sites and heritage places, especially in conflict zones, must become a priority—even though, when such crises unfold, it is often the last thing on anyone’s mind,” he said.
He further pointed to the gap between policy and implementation in India, adding, “While India has a fairly robust legal architecture for heritage conservation, there remains a clear lack of consciousness and sensitivity when it comes to preserving, protecting and promoting our heritage, particularly in rural areas.”
Speaking on the occasion, Padma Bhushan Shri S.K. Misra emphasised the broader responsibility associated with heritage preservation. “World Heritage Day is not just a symbolic observance; it is an occasion to renew our collective responsibility to preserve our heritage for future generations, especially in a country like India where such immense cultural wealth cannot be allowed to remain unattended,” he said.
Highlighting ITRHD’s approach, he added, “We see rural heritage as a catalyst for rural development. Our effort is to identify neglected heritage sites, particularly those linked to Buddhist traditions, and reintegrate them into community life by building awareness and local participation.”
Dasho Sonam Kinga said that in Bhutan, the preservation of Buddhism has been sustained through the close integration of community life, cultural practices and state support, particularly in rural areas. He pointed out that heritage continues as a living tradition because communities actively practice and pass it on across generations.
Geshe Dorji Damdul said that heritage goes beyond physical structures and carries deeper human values such as compassion, wisdom and harmony. He explained that preserving heritage is important not only for protecting history but also for sustaining the values that shape human society.
Kartikeya Vajpai, author of The Unbecoming, said that preservation should begin with safeguarding the philosophical and spiritual essence of heritage. He said that when people, especially the youth, engage with this wisdom through experience and introspection, cultural continuity follows naturally.
The discussions explored the intersection of heritage, identity and its contemporary relevance, with a particular focus on rural ecosystems and traditional knowledge systems. Speakers highlighted how India’s rural heritage, spanning monuments, agricultural practices, crafts, languages, performing arts and indigenous knowledge, remains a largely underutilised resource in the country’s development narrative.
With nearly 70% of India’s population residing in rural areas, many of which continue to face economic challenges, the need to recognise heritage as a valuable economic and social asset was strongly underscored.
Observed globally on April 18 under the aegis of the International Council on Monuments and Sites and UNESCO, World Heritage Day underscores the importance of protecting cultural and natural heritage.

Real-Time Analysis of Performance Degradation in Water Electrolysis
Changwon, South Korea, Apr 20 (BNP): Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS), led by President Chul-jin Choi, announced that a research team led by Sung Mook Choi, principal researcher at KIMS, in collaboration with Professor Yangdo Kim of Pusan National University, has developed a two-electrode-based real-time diagnostic technology capable of precisely analyzing the causes of performance degradation in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) systems under actual operating conditions. This study is significant in that it introduces a new analytical framework that separates and quantifies voltage loss mechanisms within complex water electrolysis systems by individual components.
Water electrolysis is a key technology for hydrogen production through the electrochemical splitting of water. Among its various types, anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) has attracted attention as a next-generation hydrogen production method due to its low cost and efficient hydrogen production. However, performance degradation caused by voltage increases during long-term operation has remained a major challenge, with difficulties in clearly identifying its underlying causes. Conventional electrolysis systems are based on a two-electrode configuration, which allows monitoring of overall performance but makes it difficult to pinpoint specific degradation factors. While previous studies have relied on three-electrode configurations or half-cell experiments to analyze individual electrode reactions, these approaches differ from actual single-cell operating conditions, limiting their applicability to real-world systems.
To overcome these limitations, the research team developed an advanced analytical framework that integrates electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data obtained from operating single cells with distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis, along with a proprietary method for overpotential separation.
Through this approach, the team successfully quantified voltage loss contributions by categorizing them into charge transfer resistance, hydroxide ion (OH⁻) transport resistance, membrane and contact resistance, and mass transport resistance. The results revealed that voltage increase in water electrolysis systems arises not only from electrode degradation but also from combined effects such as ion transport limitations and mass transfer constraints. The reliability of the analysis was validated through repeated experiments under various electrolyte concentrations and membrane conditions, demonstrating strong reproducibility. The findings are expected to serve as key diagnostic indicators for electrode material development, membrane–electrode assembly design, and optimization of system operation strategies.
Notably, the developed technology enables differentiation of electrode-specific reaction characteristics within practical two-electrode-based systems without requiring additional three-electrode setups. By allowing real-time tracking and analysis of performance degradation during long-term operation, the technology is expected to serve as a commercialization-friendly diagnostic platform, contributing to the design of high-efficiency and high-durability water electrolysis systems.
“This study presents a new analytical framework that enables real-time deconvolution and interpretation of voltage loss mechanisms in complex water electrolysis systems under actual operating conditions,” said Sung mook Choi, principal researcher at Korea Institute of Materials Science. “We aim to further develop this technology into a key diagnostic platform that will accelerate the commercialization of green hydrogen production.”
This research was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea under the “H2 NEXT ROUND” program, as well as KIMS’s institutional research program and the NRF Nano and Materials Technology Development Program. The findings were published online on March 27, 2026, in the international journal ACS Energy Letters (Impact Factor: 18.9).

7.4 Quake Hits Northern Japan, Triggers Tsunami Warning
Apr20(BNP): A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a tsunami warning for waves of up to three metres. The quake occurred at 4:53 PM (local time) in the Pacific waters off Iwate Prefecture and was strong enough to shake buildings as far away as Tokyo.

‘Z’ to broadcast DP World ILT20 Season 5 beginning Sunday, 22 November 2026
Apr 20: Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (‘Z’), India’s leading content and technology powerhouse, announced the live broadcast schedule of DP World International League T20 (ILT20). Season 5 of the biggest cricket league in the Gulf region – the second-most watched T20 league in the world – DP World International League T20 will begin on Sunday, 22 November 2026. The six-team, 34-match tournament, which has featured some of the biggest T20 stars over the years, will climax with the Season 5 finale on Sunday, 20 December, at the Dubai International Stadium.
The league moved to a December window in Season 4; the first three seasons were played in the January-February window. Season 4 was a big success with enhanced broadcast numbers, and spectator attendance.
