Iranian Crude Returns to India After 7 Years; Tanker Docks at Paradip

Paradip/New Delhi, Apr 14 (BNP): In a significant development for India’s energy sector, Iranian crude oil has resumed flows to the country after a gap of nearly seven years, amid temporary easing of US sanctions and tightening global supply conditions.

A very large crude carrier (VLCC), MT JAYA, carrying around 2 million barrels of crude from Kharg Island, docked at Paradip Port on April 9, marking the first such delivery since 2019 when sanctions halted trade.

According to port authorities, the vessel delivered approximately 277,321 metric tonnes of crude oil to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) refinery at Paradip. Officials described the arrival as a step that further strengthens the port’s role as a key gateway for India’s energy imports.

Adding to the development, another VLCC, Felicity, also carrying nearly 2 million barrels of Iranian crude, is currently anchored near Sikka, taking the total recent inflow to about 4 million barrels.

While it remains unclear which refiners have procured the cargoes, industry sources note that IOCL operates the Paradip refinery, while Reliance Industries Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited receive crude at Sikka.

The resumption of Iranian oil supplies comes at a time of heightened global energy volatility and reflects shifting trade dynamics, as countries seek to secure stable crude sources amid geopolitical uncertainties.

Inflation Edges Up to 3.4%, Middle East Conflict and Weak Monsoon Pose Risks

New Delhi, Apr 14 (BNP): India’s retail inflation rose modestly to 3.4 per cent in March, marking its highest level since January, according to official data released on Monday.

Despite the increase, inflation remains below the 4 per cent target set by the Reserve Bank of India, indicating that price levels are still within the central bank’s comfort zone.

However, concerns are mounting over potential upward pressure on inflation in the coming months. A prolonged conflict in the Middle East could push global crude oil prices higher, posing a significant risk for India, which imports nearly 90 per cent of its oil requirements.

Additionally, forecasts of below-average monsoon rainfall—possibly the first such instance in three years—have raised apprehensions about agricultural output and food prices.
Economists caution that the combined impact of global geopolitical tensions and domestic weather uncertainties may lead to an increase in the cost of living, prompting policymakers to remain vigilant and responsive to emerging inflationary trends.

Income Tax Collection in Odisha Hits INR 18,500 Crore; Filers Drop to 15 Lakh

Bhubaneswar, Apr 14 (BNP): Odisha recorded a net income tax collection of around ₹18,500 crore in the financial year 2025–26, according to official data shared by the Income Tax Department.

The number of income tax return filers in the state declined to nearly 15 lakh in FY25–26, compared to about 16.7 lakh in the previous financial year. The drop of around 1.7 lakh taxpayers is attributed to the increase in the income tax exemption limit announced in the Union Budget, which reduced the number of individuals required to file returns.

The information was shared during a press briefing held after the assumption of office by Odisha’s new Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Dr. D. Sudhakar Rao.

Officials also noted that Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) emerged as the highest corporate taxpayer in the state, contributing about ₹3,750 crore in taxes during the year.

For FY26–27, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is expected to set a new collection target for the state, with preliminary estimates placing it close to ₹20,000 crore. Authorities expressed confidence in meeting the upcoming target.

India Cracks Down on Overloaded Vehicles with Higher Fines, Digital Monitoring

Apr 14 (BNP): India has introduced stricter enforcement rules for overloaded vehicles, combining heavier penalties, mandatory unloading of excess cargo, and advanced digital monitoring to improve road safety and protect highway infrastructure.

Under the revised framework, vehicles found carrying excess load will face a fine of ₹20,000, along with an additional ₹2,000 for every extra tonne beyond the permitted limit. Authorities will also require immediate unloading of excess cargo before the vehicle is allowed to continue its journey.

Repeat violations may attract further action, including suspension of driving licences and cancellation of transport permits for up to three months, tightening compliance across the transport sector.

To strengthen enforcement, toll plazas across the country are being upgraded with weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems that can detect overloaded vehicles without requiring them to stop. Penalties for overloading will be collected through the FASTag system, enabling automated and cashless enforcement.

In addition, violation data will be linked with the VAHAN database to improve monitoring and ensure coordinated action against repeat offenders. Both drivers and transport operators will be held responsible for ensuring compliance with load regulations.

Vehicles carrying protruding or oversized loads beyond permissible height and width limits will also face penalties of ₹20,000.

Officials have made it mandatory for overloaded vehicles to be detained until excess cargo is removed, reinforcing strict compliance measures. The rules are being enforced more rigorously on major freight corridors, particularly in mining and industrial transport routes where overloading has been a persistent concern.

The appointments were announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday, ahead of the government’s upcoming 2026 defence strategy and investment review.

Tehran/Washington/New Delhi, Apr 14 (BNP): Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply as Iran warned that no port in the Persian Gulf or the Sea of Oman would remain safe if its own maritime infrastructure is targeted, hours before a proposed blockade by the United States comes into effect.

The warning follows the US military’s announcement that it will begin blocking vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports, a move aimed at intensifying pressure on Tehran after the failure of recent ceasefire talks.

Iran’s military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that maritime security in the region must be collective and indivisible. “Security in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman is either for everyone or for no one,” officials said, cautioning that any threat to Iranian ports would have wider consequences across the region.

The escalating standoff has already begun to impact global shipping, with disruptions reported in the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz—a key route for global oil supplies. Concerns over supply chain disruptions have also led to a surge in international oil prices.

Mumbai, April 14: Rising cricket star Ayush Mhatre shared insights into his inspiring journey and recent experiences with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on JioStar’s ‘TATA IPL: Dream On’, highlighting key moments that shaped his career from humble beginnings to playing at the highest level.

 At just 18, Mhatre has already made a mark as an ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup-winning captain, a consistent performer in Mumbai’s domestic circuit, and a member of CSK’s playing XI in the Indian Premier League.

Early Beginnings and Cricketing Journey

Recalling his early days, Mhatre spoke about discovering his passion for cricket while playing near his home in Virar with his father. His journey took a defining turn when he joined the academy of Dilip Vengsarkar, setting the foundation for his professional career.

Challenges and Domestic Breakthrough

Mhatre highlighted the challenges of travelling long distances for matches during his early career, describing physically and mentally demanding routines. Reflecting on his TATA IPL 2025 journey, Mhatre spoke about going unsold at the auction before being picked by CSK as an injury replacement. He recalled his first interaction with MS Dhoni, who advised him to stay true to his natural game.

Speaking on JioStar’s ‘TATA IPL: Dream On’, CSK’s Ayush Mhatre opened up on the start of his cricketing journey:

“There was a little space outside our house, so my father used to bowl to me. It was with a plastic bat and ball. One day, I hit the ball from our house to the terrace of another house. That day, my father realised that I could play. He didn’t want me to become a cricketer, but he wanted me to be involved in sports in some way or another. He wanted me to have a good diet, stay fit, and get tired so that I wouldn’t use my mobile phone after coming back home. Gradually, I started batting well and my father noticed it. However, cricket wasn’t that popular in Virar at that point. So, my father did some research and admitted me to Dilip Vengsarkar sir’s academy in Mumbai. That’s how the journey began.”

On making his red-ball domestic debut for Mumbai at the age of 17:

“From Virar to Churchgate, there were no seats available on the train, so we had to stand. After that, we had to get to the ground, play, and even after hours of batting, there were no seats available on the return journey either. So, we had to stand again and then walk. It was mentally tough. I was playing in the KSC tournament and my performance there was good. I didn’t even know that I was close to selection. I was in Baroda at the time and got a call from the MCA asking for my T-shirt size and jersey number for the Irani Trophy. I can’t describe what that feeling was like. Mumbai cricket has also played a huge role in my journey, especially in terms of getting opportunities. Making it to the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team at such a young age was a huge achievement, because sharing a dressing room with legends like Shardul da and Ajju bhai, and learning from them, was special.”

On TATA IPL 2025 mega auction and subsequent call-up from CSK as an injury replacement:

“The Asia Cup was going on and the auction was happening side by side. It would have been great if I got picked, but even if I didn’t, I didn’t need to feel bad because I had another big target to focus on, which was the Asia Cup. But as they say, things happen for a reason. I was at the NCA when I got a call from CSK. They wanted to see me bat in the nets, so I had a two-day camp with them. I came back to the NCA and two to three days later, I got another call asking me to be ready and inform my family, as they were completing the formalities. They said I could play the next game against LSG, but I couldn’t get a flight ticket. So, I joined the team in Mumbai. The team was very welcoming. During my first interaction with Mahi bhai, he told me that now that I was selected, I should just play my game, go for my shots but not try to hit every ball, and continue doing what I had been doing for the last two to three years.”

On his cricketing idol and the main goal:

“Rohit Sharma is my favourite cricketer. I have been watching his batting since childhood. He spoke to me very nicely after the game in the IPL. That was the first time I met him. He praised my batting, gave me a few tips on playing the short ball, and urged me to continue playing the way I have been. He even said that I could call him anytime without hesitation, and that really helped calm my nerves. Every young cricketer’s dream is to play for India. The moment of wearing the jersey during the Under-19 World Cup was special. I didn’t take any pressure about carrying a legacy or anything like that. My main goal is to play for India, stay in the team for a long time, and perform. Whether it is the Ranji Trophy or the IPL, wherever I get a chance to play, I want to do well and not focus too much on the results; they will follow automatically.”
