Cisco’s Pioneering Identity Intelligence Defends Against Most Persistent Cyber Threat
CISCO LIVE EMEA, AMSTERDAM, Feb.7, 2024 — Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO), the leader in security and networking, today unveiled new innovations within the Cisco Security Cloud as part of its mission to simplify security. First-of-its kind Cisco Identity Intelligence and continued innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities are the latest milestones towards its vision of a unified, AI-driven, cross-domain security platform.
Cisco is introducing an industry-first approach that brings together identity, networking and security to better protect organizations’ complex identity stack against increasingly sophisticated attacker techniques.
Today there is blind trust between authentication and access solutions, and threat actors have successfully compromised some of the largest organizations in the world in 2023 by targeting these weaknesses. In fact, more than 26% of all Cisco Talos Incident Response engagements in 2023 involved adversaries using compromised credentials on valid accounts.
A user is often mapped to many digital identities and accounts – drastically increasing entry points for attackers and the possibility of lateral movement “across” identities. Too often legacy permissions have not been removed, and security teams are missing crucial context about historical identity behavior, actions across systems and current risk levels that are needed to make trusted access decisions.
Cisco Identity Intelligence runs on top of customers’ existing identity stores and provides unified visibility, as well as AI-driven analytics. Customers can discover their whole identity population, clean up vulnerable accounts, eliminate unused and risky privileges, detect behavior anomalies and block high-risk access attempts – without ripping and replacing their current solutions.
While multifactor authentication (MFA) remains a critical first line of defense against identity-based attacks, malicious actors are using new and creative ways to steal credentials. According to the 2024 Duo Trusted Access Report, Cisco Duo processed 16 billion authentications in 2023, up 41% annually, and saw weaker forms of MFA like SMS and phone calls dip to an all-time low of 5%, yet the volume of identity attacks is higher than ever.
“Identity is the fabric that connects humans, devices and applications in the workplace, and has become an easy target for modern cybersecurity attacks. Organizations need to adopt an identity-first approach to security, which among other things allows them to evolve from just asking ‘can’ a user access a system to continuously assessing whether a user ‘should’ be able to do what they are doing once they are authenticated,” said Jeetu Patel, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Security and Collaboration at Cisco. “By analyzing the entire attack surface of an organization’s users, machines, services, apps, data and their behaviors, Cisco Identity Intelligence bridges the chasm between authentication and access. We are the first vendor bringing together identity, networking and security into a complete solution to address the largest cyber challenge of modern times.”
Cisco Identity Intelligence is built on a powerful identity graph that pulls data from customers’ many existing third-party sources that manage identity and access. With AI-driven behavioral analytics and Cisco’s unmatched reach into the network, organizations can take a graduated response, such as quarantining an identity, killing active sessions or isolating the network leveraging Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE). Cisco customers will gain visibility with these critical insights through their existing solutions, including:
- Smart Authentication with Cisco Duo: Detect unusual patterns based on behavior and third-party signals.
- Smart Access with Cisco Secure Access: Verify the authentication decision and block unusual or high-risk behaviors.
- Smart Threat Detection with Cisco XDR: Correlate identity signals to provide missing information that traditional endpoint and network security solutions miss.
Cisco Identity Intelligence will be available July 2024. With the addition of Identity Intelligence to the Cisco Security Cloud, customers will get even more value from their existing investments.
“Hybrid work and modern multi, hybrid cloud IT architectures have evolved the perimeter to be based on Identity. The reality is that this modern identity includes islands of embedded legacy identity and corresponding directories, creating a complex, forever-evolving problem. Thus, a zero-trust future does not exist without identity having a prominent seat at the cybersecurity table,” said Frank Dickson, Group Vice President, Security & Trust, IDC. “Cisco now bridges the two worlds of identity and security to offer actionable visibility.”
“Identity is the new perimeter to protect and it’s an ongoing challenge for enterprises as witnessed by recent security breaches. Identity threat detection and response (ITDR) aims to converge identity and security, strengthening controls tied to authenticated access leveraging multiple data sources and analytics,” said Will Townsend, Vice President & Principal Analyst, Moor Insights & Strategy. “Cisco’s announcement is a step forward, combining identity intelligence and actionable insights with its existing network visibility, XDR orchestration, Secure Access and Duo access capabilities.”
Continued AI Momentum
Cisco continues to make AI pervasive across the Cisco Security Cloud to help to tip the scales in favor of defenders, including the recently unveiled Cisco AI Assistant for Security, which helps customers make informed decisions, augment their tool capabilities and automate complex tasks. On the heels of launching the AI Assistant for firewall, today, Cisco’s rapid pace of innovation is on display with additional groundbreaking AI capabilities:
AI Assistant in Secure Access: Leveraging the power of generative AI, customers can create security access policies using natural language prompts within Cisco’s Secure Services Edge (SSE) solution.
Securing AI: New capabilities in Secure Access will also automatically detect and protect intellectual property (IP) as it flows in and out of AI systems.
AI-based Email Threat Detection: Cisco Email Threat Defense now uses AI to simultaneously evaluate different portions of an incoming email for markers of malicious intent.
Secure Connectivity
Cisco is integrating its robust Networking capabilities with Cisco Secure Access. Experience Insights, powered by Cisco ThousandEyes improves productivity for hybrid workers by quickly revealing connectivity and application issues and fostering faster resolution. There is no additional cost for this feature, as it is included in all Secure Access licenses. Cisco Secure Access also now integrates Catalyst SD-WAN, for a complete Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) offering.

Ankit Desai, Marketing Director, Hershey India, said, “Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love in its myriad expressions, from the profound connection between spouses, to the bittersweet relationship between siblings, and the everlasting ties shared with parents. Over the past three years, we have been building and strengthening the ethos of our campaign ‘YourForevers’. To bring alive this, we are thrilled to yet again associate with Terribly Tiny Tales for the upcoming season of ‘Butterflies’. As we eagerly anticipate the romantic tales and heartfelt content that will surely strike a chord with the viewers, we are equally excited about TTT’s launch of their Generative AI portal that adds another dimension to the campaign. Embodying innovation at its core, this portal is a canvas for heartfelt messages, elevating the art of expressing love in the digital age. Our strategy seamlessly integrates creativity, strategic execution and cutting-edge technology, enabling heartfelt connections across diverse relationships. Through the AI portal, we want to enable consumers to express love to their forevers while providing a truly personalized and meaningful experience.”
Strategically slated for a pre-Valentine’s Day launch, the website launch campaign will leverage social media platforms for widespread promotion. Additionally, TTT will be collaborating with multiple influencers, who will use the portal to dedicate original songs and express how they feel. The brand is eyeing to generate 10K + submissionsthrough the portal and maintaining a dynamic buzz around the campaign. So, unleash the power of personalized storytelling, create unique dedications, and make this Valentine’s Day unforgettable for your loved ones. Just like love has no limits, so does the portal! Generative AI is the Pride of Cybercrime Services
Highlights:
- Generative AI as a Cybercrime Tool: Cybercriminals are increasingly using generative AI for sophisticated cybercrimes, including social media impersonation, spam campaigns, AI-based deepfake services and KYC verification services.
- AI-Powered Black-Hat Platforms: The rise of AI-driven platforms for creating and managing fake social media accounts, offering services to automate content generation and account activity for illicit purposes.
- Evolution of Spam, AI-based deep fake voice and face services and KYC Frauds: The integration of AI in spam services to bypass security controls, ability of AI-based deep fake voice, face and lip services and in KYC verification services for creating fake identification documents, signifying a new level of sophistication in cybercrimes.
Over the past year, generative AI and ChatGPT have continued to gain prominence in the ongoing struggle between attackers and defenders.
While many industries continue to explore the promise of AI to augment their capabilities, cybercriminals have also seen the powerful potential of AI in exploiting vulnerabilities and creating new attack vectors.
At the beginning of 2023, we exposed the initial hints of cybercriminals showing interest in using ChatGPT to create malware, encryption tools, and other attack vectors that leverage Generative AI. In addition, Russian cybercriminals immediately started to discuss how to bypass any restrictions to begin using ChatGPT for illicit purposes.
One year after the launch of ChatGPT, we observe that the use of generative AI has become the new normal for many cybercrime services, especially in the area of impersonation and social engineering. Some of them have realized the potential of generative AI as a differentiator to increase the effectiveness of their services and are even bragging about it.
In this blog, we provide examples of 4 Russian underground AI-powered services that utilize generative AI built-in as part of their illicit tools and platforms:
Black-Hat Platform for Social Media Impersonation on large scale
Deepfakes Service
Malicious Spam Tool
KYC Verification Services
Case 1: AI-powered Black-Hat Platform for Social Media Impersonation
Fake social media accounts pose a significant cybersecurity threat due to their potential for malicious activities, brand impersonation, spreading disinformation, and much more.

In December 2023, an experienced threat actor, with official status of a seller in a “reputable” Russian underground forum offered for sale a ready-to-go platform that uses AI as a core module to generate content for social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Telegram. This can be used to almost fully automate maintenance of fake accounts on social media.
In one case study provided as an example, the threat actor shows generated content for female models. In another use case, the actor generated a series of fake profiles that mimic those of successful financial traders.
The threat actor explained that he only realized just how powerful these tools are while working on his platform and he now offers two business models:
Fake social media accounts management as a service – The threat actor and his team create all the necessary accounts on Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, and Twitter. They then automatically generate the content and promote the accounts to give them visibility and a sense of authenticity by joining relevant groups, “liking” similar topic accounts, etc.
As proof of concept, the actor shows an example of 20 accounts of female models that were created and run using AI.
The platform can simultaneously create content for over 200 accounts and generate daily posts, reels, etc. The AI-managed accounts attract followers and the traffic from all the accounts can be used for any malicious purposes.
This managed service costs $50 for a single Instagram account per month and a bundle of connected fake social media accounts in 4 networks is $70. The minimum required order is for 10 accounts.
A stand-alone platform – The platform is sold “as is” and the buyer handles the management of all AI-driven accounts by himself. One of the core features of platform ownership is the ability to upload content and enrich it using AI.
The price of the platform is $5,000.
Case 2: AI-Powered Deepfakes Service
On December 31st, the New Year’s Eve, another impersonation service was introduced in a major Russian underground forum.
This service is focused on providing AI-based deepfake services in three areas:
1. Lip Sync – for 100$ per 30 seconds of the content.
2. Deepfakes which include lip sync and face replacement – for 150$ per 30 seconds.
3. Voice Acting – for $30 per 1 minute.
Using services described in cases 1 and 2, separately, or combined can create possible impact in two significant areas avenues:
Creation of fake profiles army in social media to promote certain political agendas or products.
Impersonation of celebrities or corporate executives which can lead to severe brand reputation damage or initiation of cyber-attacks.
Case 3: AI-Powered Malicious Spam Tools and Services

Malicious spam is one of the oldest illicit services found on underground cybercrime forums. Spam is the most common initial vector for various attack scenario objectives such as phishing and credential harvesting, malware distribution, scams/fraud, etc.
One spam service was launched in November 2023 by a reputable threat actor who claims over 15 years of criminal experience. After receiving positive feedback on his service, he proceeded to make his spam services AI-powered, specifically by ChatGPT.
Using ChatGPT helped randomize the spam text and created a higher rate of success that the spam email would reach the victim’s inbox.
As one customer of this service said, the AI-driven spam service helped him bypass anti-spam and anti-phishing controls of popular webmail services and achieved a 70% successful delivery rate to the targeted email address.
Do you want to know how much the average hacker needs to invest to successfully deliver 70,000 malicious emails? The 100,000 package of spam email costs $1,250 (which can be paid in Bitcoin, Monero or USDT).
On the demand side of spam tools, currently, cybercriminals looking for new spam tools are requesting that the tools must include ChatGPT-powered randomization function as part of their technical specifications. This automatically creates unique text for each spam email, which helps it to easily bypass anti-spam filters.
Case 4: KYC Verification Services
Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures have become standard practice for companies providing financial services due to the need for enhanced security, risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance.
KYC also plays a crucial role in retrieving access to an account in case the legitimate owner is unable to use traditional methods like password reset. The company usually requires customers to undergo a KYC process to confirm their identity and ensure that they are legitimate account holders. This typically involves providing valid identification documents, such as a government-issued ID, passport, or driver’s license, along with additional verification steps like a photo with a document.
A whole underground market exists with shady services such as creating images of fake documents for verification. Previously, this kind of cybercrime job was done mostly by manually manipulating relevant images.
Now, however, one of the KYC Darkweb services vendors said that with the advent of artificial intelligence, he had recently integrated AI technology that significantly sped up the process of creating fake verification documents without sacrificing quality.

Optimize site monitoring and security with Hikvision
06-02-2024
Timelapse video expert Site-Eye integrates its solution with Hikvision cameras to optimize site monitoring and security

Site-Eye, the UK’s leading timelapse video provider, has integrated its software solution into Hikvision cameras using the HEOP 2.0 development platform. By converting its software into an onboard app in the Hikvision cameras, Site-Eye is making timelapse video better, less expensive, and less complex – helping its clients create professional timelapse video marketing content, monitor project management milestones, streamline supplier disputes, and improve overall site security. Hikvision spoke to Site-Eye’s Managing Director, Gareth Evans-McClave, to find out more.
How the project started
In the early 2000s, when we were undertaking our first time-lapse projects, keeping cameras running was difficult – requiring frequent battery and tape changes. To overcome this challenge, Site-Eye developed a system based on digital cameras and software that could reliably take time-lapse images at defined intervals for literally weeks on end. Since then, there has been high demand for our solutions, and we are now the biggest time-lapse video provider in the UK.
Site-Eye solutions
Site-Eye automates the process of time-lapse imaging on-site, making it very efficient and customizable to clients’ needs. For example, we can configure all connected cameras centrally, which means we can set the interval for images to be taken, turn cameras off and on remotely, and change the interval between timelapse images. Based on these capabilities, clients can create great marketing content for their projects, resolve supplier disputes faster, and increase overall site security and project efficiency. Thanks to these benefits, a project manager on a very large construction project in London reported a £1 million saving with Site-Eye.
One of our clients used Hikvision cameras for security applications and asked if we could integrate Site-Eye software into their devices. At that point, I reached out to Hikvision to see if they had this capability, and the support we received from them from day one was incredible. The Hikvision team provided us with demo cameras as well as some help and advice to get us started with the process of deploying Site-Eye as on-board software. As well as the excellent support, we’ve found that Hikvision devices are extremely reliable for our clients, and provide a great price-to-quality ratio. We’ve installed Hikvision cameras at many client sites now and we’ve never experienced a reliability issue, which is impressive.
Hikvision HEOP 2.0 to integrate Site-Eye with Ultra Series cameras
HEOP 2.0 allows us to control all Hikvision camera functions directly from our on- board app. Because HEOP 2.0 gives us the ‘key’ to the cameras, we’re not limited at all in terms of the software functions we can write and deploy. Also, HEOP allows us to harness the AI features that are built into Hikvision cameras at the factory. One example of this is the Hikvision People Counting capability, which
one of our clients has used to understand the flow of people through their site at different times of the day.
We’re working on new functionality, called SiteStream that we’re planning to integrate into Hikvision cameras in the near future. This captures 10 minutes of video between each still timelapse photograph, and the videos can be retained by the client for a pre-defined period and reviewed in the event of a security incident or supplier dispute. Hikvision is updating the firmware of HEOP 2.0 to enable the integration of SiteStream, which is a great example of how responsive and flexible the Hikvision team is.
Hikvision’s global presence and technology leadership also helps us connect with and serve customers in markets where we haven’t traditionally operated. What’s more, we ship the solution easily as an onboard app in Hikvision cameras, which means companies all over the world can use it to create professional timelapse videos of their projects.
