Toyota Kirloskar Motor Celebrates Environment Month: Unite for Responsible Resource Consumption

Toyota Kirloskar Motor

Bangalore, 4th June 2024: Marking the ‘World Environment Day’, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today announced the kick-off of its ‘Toyota Environment Month’, a dedicated month (June 2024) to further foster eco-consciousness and advocating for a greener, sustainable future. Through a spectrum of initiatives intricately woven into its long-term vision encapsulated by the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 (TEC 2050) and this year’s theme “Unite for Responsible Resource Consumption towards becoming Global No.1”, the company aims to ignite awareness and action towards environmental stewardship with a key focus on water management and natural ecosystem revival with afforestation. This resonates strongly with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) theme for World Environment Day 2024, which underscores the critical issues of Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience, enfolded by the slogan “Our Land, Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration”.

Over the years, TKM has consciously adopted sustainable business practices and transformed from a carmaker to a mobility company. Keeping with its principle of ‘Respect for the Planet’, Toyota globally announced the ‘Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050’ (TEC 2050) in October 2015, comprising six environmental challenges. The first set of 3 challenges focuses on achieving carbon neutrality from our products, and its entire value chain including the manufacturing activities. The latter 3 challenges aim to create a net positive impact by minimizing and optimizing water usage, enabling a recycled-based society, and establishing a future society in ‘Harmony with Nature’.

To manage our resources responsibly, TKM has adopted a holistic approach and is actively engaging in various sustainable initiatives. The company has achieved significant milestones including a remarkable rise in groundwater level which is at 16.1 feet post monsoon FY 2022-23 (from 90ft in 2009), rainwater harvesting ponds with 51,000 m3 capacity for manufacturing and non-manufacturing applications. 95% of the water requirement for production is met through recycled and rainwater harvesting. Further, TKM is promoting a recycling-based society with enhanced recyclability of waste up to 96%.

As stewards of the environment, the company has taken significant steps in nature conservation. Over the years, TKM has planted over 328,000 trees across 112 acres within its factory premises using the Miyawaki concept. This focuses on restoring and reconstructing the forests based on the concept of “Potential Natural Vegetation”, and this very application has helped in creating a ‘Natural Forest’, within the premises of TKM, by planting native species to create biodiversity and aid food chain and ecology.

To further amplify the efforts in restoring the native biodiversity, TKM has established a state-of-the-art ‘Ecozone’, an experiential learning center with 17 theme parks located at TKM’s plant facility, which continues to contribute through knowledge-sharing on various aspects of nature conservation including climate change, waste-to-value, ecological balance, water resource management and so forth. Thus far, 42,000+ students have been sensitised, imbibing positive behavioral change to live in harmony with nature.

Marking the celebration of the environment month in June, TKM with its enhanced efforts continues to create awareness amongst its stakeholders on water scenario & conservation methods, alongside exclusive eco-webinars conducted by environmental experts. During the eco-driven month, TKM aims to actively engage with local communities through a myriad of eco-activities including plantation drives at school, rejuvenation project for local lakes/ponds, and clean-up efforts aimed at preserving natural habitats. Activities such as “Toyota Swachh Abhiyan, “RaaR” (Recycling as a Responsibility / e.g., office uniform recycling), Toyota Eco Club, Eco Family Walk (ecozone), etc., are also being planned throughout the month, to promote sustainable lifestyle amongst the stakeholders including employees & their families, business associates, members of Toyota group companies, school children and community members in and around Bidadi and Ramnagara regions.

Speaking about TKM’s Environment Month celebration, Mr. B. Padmanabha, Executive Vice President & Director of Manufacturing – at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “At Toyota Kirloskar Motor, we recognize that environmental and social sustainability is just as crucial as the economic progression. We are fully committed to the six environmental challenges that Toyota is trying to address globally. Our focus is not just on products & our manufacturing operations but the entire value chain, while also giving back to the communities where we operate.

By observing Environment Month, we continue to strive, inspire innovation, and drive tangible changes for a better tomorrow. TKM has been steering the eco-friendly journey strongly and the significant milestones of 100% Renewable Energy in grid electricity, using only 5% freshwater for our manufacturing, recycling of 96% of waste, etc. are a testament to it. Under this year’s Environment Month theme “Unite for Responsible Resource Consumption Towards Becoming Global No.1”, together with our stakeholders, we continue to make a significant impact on resource conservation through various eco interventions with a special focus in the areas of water management, land ecosystem revival (plantation drives) and reduction in energy consumption. Globally, our eco-efforts are driven to minimize the environmental footprints in every path that we undertake in a more holistic manner, thereby catalysing positive changes, and creating a happy place to live”, he added.

Previously, TKM has been conferred with various accolades/recognitions for its eco commitment in the respective categories, to name a few, TERI Water Sustainability Awards, CII Sustainability Award for Biodiversity, CII Award for Water & Hazardous Waste Management, CII-SR EHS Excellence Awards in Water Management, CII GreenCo Platinum Company’ Award for Environmental Excellence and Sustainable Leadership, etc.

TKM remains committed to its core values of sustainability, environmental responsibility, and innovation. In pursuit of Carbon Neutrality, Toyota remains steadfast in enhancing its clean mobility solutions, adopting multiple vehicle technology pathways including alternate fuels. Stakeholder engagement lies at the heart of TKM’s environmental advocacy. This collaborative spirit is further underscored by TKM’s Environment Management System, which integrates ecologically sound practices across its business ecosystem including its supplier and dealer partners, covering the wider spread of eco-consciousness, plantation & clean-up drives, ‘No Plastic’ campaign, lowering water usage, reduction of carbon footprints in their operations and so forth. Driven by its strong belief in collaborative action, Toyota extends an open invitation to stakeholders, partners, and individuals passionate about environmental preservation to join hands in their sustainable endeavors, catalyzing positive change within the community.

Holden House and the Clarks Celebrate Decades of B&B Hospitality in June 2024

Holden House and the Clarks Celebrate Decades of B&B Hospitality in June 2024

Colorado Springs, CO, June 03, 2024 — Who would have thought that when Sallie and Welling Clark turned the corner in 1985 to see the abandoned house on the corner of West Pikes Peak Avenue, they would still be running Holden House 1902 Bed & Breakfast Inn, an award-winning bed and breakfast, today and celebrating 38 years of continuous operation on June 9. After honeymooning in Colorado in 1980 and with Sallie’s family roots in Colorado where she spent time on her Grandmother’s farm in Pueblo every summer, the Clarks developed a love for the trails, parks, open spaces, mountains and culture that Colorado Springs offered. At the time, the nearby historic district, known as “Old Colorado City,” so named because of its designation as the first territorial capital in 1859, had received a revitalization thanks to the City of Colorado Springs economic redevelopment efforts. The Clarks recognized the potential opportunity of the area with shops and restaurants nearby and were on the ground floor to establish the city’s first Westside bed and breakfast inn. Looking to start a small business when Welling left the Navy, Colorado Springs was the perfect fit.

Although they saw the abandoned and neglected house with overgrown weeds, faded facade and deteriorated sidewalks, they also envisioned the potential for opening a B&B. The Victorian character drew them to the project and after a year of renovation, including replacing the foundation of the house, the Clarks opened Holden House, named for the original owner and Colorado Springs area pioneer, Isabel Holden. While they started with one building and three guest rooms, they were eventually able to purchase the original carriage house and Victorian house next door and converted all rooms into suites. The result has been the opportunity to welcome guests for over 38 years. While it has not been without challenges including city council zoning approval, construction loans, business insurance difficulties and more, the Clarks were determined to make it a success. They can still remember their first guests, a young Army couple on their honeymoon making their way to a duty station in Arizona and also recall turning away potential guests while awaiting B&B insurance approval for a new industry that was little known at the time. “No one knew what a B&B was in 1986 and we were forced to secure expensive hotel insurance,” said Welling Clark, owner-innkeeper.

When asked about the challenges over the years, there have been many. From the terrorist attacks on 9-11 to the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest wildfires, economic ups and downs, the proliferation of vacation rental properties and new hotels, the 2020 pandemic and more, a steady-as-you-go mentality has been the key to consistency. “What sets Holden House apart is our personal service, full gourmet breakfast, quality accommodations with all private baths and attention to detail. We have also been committed to a sustainable business plan and financial stability,” said Sallie.

So what makes stay-ability in this time and personally intensive hospitality business still successful today? “It’s the continued involvement in the inn operations and maintenance, as well as recognizing when to hire staff to assist in the day-to-day operations,” says Welling. “We couldn’t do what we do without the amazing assistant innkeepers who work for us, as you can’t continue to work seven days a week on call 24 hours a day without taking the time to renew and refresh yourselves.” The Clarks and Holden House also give back to the community, from donations to local charities, to serving as neighborhood association leaders and on county and city boards, while also engaging in Colorado tourism efforts. In 1986, Sallie and Welling established the state’s first nonprofit bed and breakfast association, Bed & Breakfast Innkeepers of Colorado, which markets and represents B&Bs across the state and they are still directly involved in the organization.

“It’s been said that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life, and while it depends on what day you ask us, the love of sharing our home, the history of the area and introducing our guests to the many incredible sights of the Pikes Peak region makes it all worth it,” says Sallie. And, she remarks with a smile, “On to year 39!”

Advance Knowledge of Neurofibromatosis Development and Treatment

Baton Rouge, LA, June 03, 2024 –Neurofibromatosis type 1, a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow along nerves, occurs in 1 in 3,000 to 4,000 people worldwide. Although the tumors are usually benign, they can cause blindness, deafness, disfigurement, bone abnormalities, learning disabilities, and disabling pain. eurofibromatosis 1, more commonly called NF1, is also associated with an increased risk of other tumors including leukemia, glioblastoma, and breast cancer.

There is no cure for NF1, and until very recently, there were no specific therapies beyond treating the individual symptoms with chemotherapy and radiation, bracing or surgery, and pain medications and alternative therapies. May has been designated as NF Awareness Month, to bring more attention and education toward Neurofibromatosis.

Dr. Robert Kesterson is Professor of Cancer Precision Medicine and Director of the Genetically Engineered Models, or GEMS, core facility at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Families from all over the world with children diagnosed with NF1 reach out to him in hopes of developing the best therapy for treating their child’s specific genetic mutation.

“NF1 is caused by multiple mutations in the NF1 gene. When I first began studying NF1, there were no treatments. Today, there is a drug called a MEK inhibitor that reduces symptoms in some patients. It doesn’t work for all patients, so we need to work to develop additional therapeutics,” Dr. Kesterson said. “One issue with NF1 is that the gene is very large and there are so many different mutations, with over 7,000 mutations already known.”

Over the last few years, Dr. Kesterson has been working on multiple ways to target and edit NF1 genetic typos. NF1 animal models help uncover the underlying process of the disease, which can lead to new treatments, and often extremely individualized treatments, to better manage the disease in a patient. Dr. Kesterson estimates that he has created between 300 and 500 animal models for unique diseases within the last 20 years.

Dr. Kesterson’s lab is examining molecular mechanisms associated with the NF1 gene since it is a tumor suppressor gene associated with many types of cancers. He specializes in creating personalized animal models that mimic a patient’s specific genetic mutations, which hold the promise of uniquely tailoring therapies to either correct a particular mutation at the DNA level or provide the missing protein back to the tumor cells growing abnormally.

“Coming to LSU and Pennington Biomedical after working at centers for the National Cancer Institute at Vanderbilt University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham for over 25 years was a natural fit since there are numerous connections between my cancer research and metabolism, where Pennington Biomedical is a leader,” Kesterson said.

Dr. Kesterson’s work extends beyond NF1. He has created mouse models for patients with diseases such as cystic fibrosis, polycystic kidney disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, blindness, and many types of cancer.

The kind of personalized gene rescue Dr. Kesterson is able to do relies on increasingly affordable genetic sequencing and can make the difference between life and death for people with rare diseases.

He said technological advances in the last six years have made it much easier to provide true precision medicine and have opened up the rapid development of animals beyond just mice.

“Genetically engineered models represent one of the best ways we can help individuals with a unique disease because we can look at the specific mechanisms. We can identify the specific gene and then identify what about that gene is leading to the disease. Where is the protein? Where is the mutation? What bonds can be disrupted? Some genes have been studied clinically for a very long time, but patients have different phenotypes,” he said. “This process used to take a long time using mouse stem cells. With the development of CRISPR technology, it is much easier and quicker to make changes in the genome.”

Dr. Kesterson believes his work will ultimately lead to the ability to restore partial function of the gene associated with NF1, thereby reducing the growth of tumors and other symptoms of the disease. He is not alone in thinking his work holds tremendous promise. He has significant funding from both federal sources and many families with children diagnosed with NF1 who are passionate about supporting efforts to find new treatments and eventually, a cure.

“Dr. Kesterson is a world leader in both cancer precision medicine and genetically engineered models,” said Dr. John Kirwan, Pennington Biomedical executive director. “As Louisiana works toward a National Cancer Institute designation, the work of researchers like Dr. Kesterson and others focused on cancer and related diseases will be instrumental in contributing to building the critical mass necessary to bring cutting-edge cancer care to those in our state.”
