Emeritus’ success story now a Harvard Business School Case Study
Mumbai, February 13, 2024: The success story of edtech unicorn Emeritus, a global leader in delivering accessible and affordable high-quality education, is now a case study by the prestigious Harvard Business School (HBS), the company announced today. ‘Emeritus: Achieving Impact, Providing Access’, traces the first phase of the company’s founding journey by co-founders Ashwin Damera and Chaitanya Kalipatnapu, showcasing its innovative approach to education which has expanded opportunities to learners globally, and previews the road that lies ahead.

The case study, which will serve as a guide for mission-driven entrepreneurs and professionals, and be used in courses offered by Harvard, follows the journey of Damera, an HBS alumnus, and Kalipatnapu, an alumnus of INSEAD, who shared a dream of making societal impact by bringing access to high-quality education. Authored by HBS senior lecturer Ashish Nanda and research associate Zack Kurtovich, it intricately chronicles the origins of Emeritus’s transformative journey from idea to achieving global scale, made possible by a team united by the mission, and through the strength of strategic partnerships with world-class universities.
Emeritus, a pioneer in online executive education, led the way by offering Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs), cohort-based programs with a mix of synchronous and asynchronous elements, high-touch student support, and live faculty interactions. On how the company’s offerings came to life, the case study states, “…participation in executive education programs was often not feasible for individuals from developing regions, as they typically were prohibitively expensive and required participants to travel to the university campuses. Both Damera and Kalipatnapu were eager to address the unmet need among emerging market professionals for quality executive education at affordable rates”.
The study further notes that as the company’s growth accelerated in collaboration with top universities around the world, Damera and Kalipatnapu’s “leadership in tandem was critical to maintaining a sense of momentum and a strong culture within the firm”. Setting the company distinctly apart from competitors, the case notes the success metrics for the Emeritus co-founders are not valuations or financial returns, but the impact on individuals, companies, and society.
Announcing this milestone of being featured as an HBS case study, Ashwin Damera, Co-Founder and CEO, of Emeritus, said, “Chaitanya and I embarked on this journey to break down barriers to high-quality education. It is humbling to see our endeavor recognized as a case study by Harvard, a world-leading institution. This journey has been a whirlwind, and we hope that our approach to building Emeritus can offer some learnings to other entrepreneurs building mission-driven teams. We remain thankful to our team, university partners, and professionals around the world for placing their trust in us. This is a great achievement as we continue to work towards driving positive change through education.”
The case study also dives into the plans of the company to continue to expand and revolutionize the executive education and upskilling segment. Emeritus is prepared to navigate new markets, expand its product offerings, and forge newer strategic partnerships. With a steadfast commitment to excellence, innovation, and impact, Emeritus remains committed to redefining the landscape of executive education.

39% Indians’ potential love interest turning out to be scammers
India – February 13, 2024 — Today, McAfee, a global leader in online protection, unveils its second annual “Modern Love” study, about the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in online dating, and the implications this has for increased catfishing and romance scams. This study surveyed 7,000 people in seven countries worldwide, including India. The rise of powerful AI tools complicates the online dating landscape. By leveraging easy-to-use AI tools, romance scammers can craft convincing messages and realistic profile images to trick people looking for love online.
The key findings of this study revealed that 77% of Indians said they’d come across fake profiles and/or photos that look AI-generated on dating websites or apps, or on social media. Further, the prevalence of romance scams emerged with 39% of Indians saying their conversations with a potential love interest online turned out to be with a scammer. 26% said they’d talked with a potential love interest, to discover it was actually an AI-generated bot and not a real person.
91% of Indians revealed they, or someone they know, have been contacted by a stranger through social media or text message and started to “chat” with them regularly to know them better. With that in mind, those looking for love are often more vulnerable to scams when connecting with strangers, and cybercriminals use that vulnerability to their advantage by engaging in long and sophisticated attempts to steal from victims.
Furthermore, the study also discovered that more than half, 65% Indians have used ChatGPT/AI to help create pics or other content for a dating app. Specifically this Valentine’s Day, 56% of Indians are planning to or considering using AI to write messages for their love interest as it helps boost their confidence. However, this contrasts sharply with people’s feelings about receiving AI-generated content: 60% of people said they would be hurt or offended if they found out their Valentine’s message was written by a machine / Artificial Intelligence.
Despite mixed feelings and experiences, the effectiveness of AI is undeniable: 81% of people reported receiving more interest and better responses using AI-generated content than when they drafted or used their own original content.
And if you’re not on dating apps/sites, the McAfee Labs team reveals you still need to exercise caution online with an increase in Valentine-related scams. This includes Valentine-related malware campaigns (25% surge), malicious URLs (300% increase), and a variety of romance-themed spam and email scams (a staggering 400% increase), with the majority focused on Valentine’s shopping and gifts. McAfee Labs expects these numbers will continue rising as February 14 gets closer, urging vigilance.
“The possibilities of AI are endless, and unfortunately, so are the perils. For people who are shy about starting conversations, short on time to craft the perfect message, or whose photos could be brightened, AI offers tools to help enjoy all the fun and excitement that comes with online dating.,” said Steve Grobman, McAfee’s Chief Technology Officer.
“Unfortunately, we know cybercriminals also use AI to scale malicious activity. With love-seekers spending more time online leading up to Valentine’s Day, scammers are using AI to pose as love interests to steal your money or personal information. We encourage people to balance romantic hope with healthy skepticism, to pause before sharing sensitive information online, and to ensure they use the right tools to protect their privacy, identity, and personal information,” continued Grobman.
Steps for protecting yourself from online romance and AI scams.
People can help prevent financial and emotional heartbreak by taking the following steps:
- Scrutinize any direct messages you receive from a love interest, via a dating app or social media. One way to spot a scammer is to watch for consistent, AI-generated messages. These are often quite generic or lack substance. Additionally, it’s important to be sure not to click on any links in messages you receive from someone you have not met in person.
- Do a reverse-image search of any profile pictures the person uses. If the search results show that your love interest is associated with another name or with details that don’t match up with what they’ve told you, you may be chatting with a scammer.
- Never send money or gifts to someone you haven’t met in person, even if they send you money first. Scammers often send money to soften up their victim and build trust, so don’t share personal or account information, even if the other person is forthcoming with theirs.
- Talk to someone you trust about this new love interest. It can be easy to miss things that don’t add up when you are feeling hopeful and excited. So, pay attention to your friends or family when they show signs of concern, and take the relationship slowly.
- Invest in tools to help identify online scams. McAfee’s portfolio of products includes innovative protection features, such as McAfee Scam Protection, that detects and protects you in real time from never-before-seen threats and scams – whether that’s dangerous links shared on text, email, search results, or social media. In addition, McAfee recently announced deepfake detection is on the horizon, furthering McAfee’s commitment to use AI to fight AI scams and help arm consumers with the ability to detect deepfakes.
Survey Methodology
The survey was conducted online in January 2024 by Market Research Company, MSI-ACI via email inviting people 18 years and older to complete an online questionnaire. In total 7,000 adults completed the survey from 7 countries included the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, India, and Japan.

The emotive and sensory connection between the brain and art discussed
Gandhinagar: Have you ever thought how any form of art influences the human brain or how our cognition aids in the development and interpretation of art in its various forms? These may seem two separate entities of science and arts, but in fact, they enrich and shape one another and, in turn, enrich us intellectually and emotionally.

To explore and understand the intricacies of this intertwined relationship and its creative and cognitive processes, the Curiosity Lab at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), in collaboration with the Cognitive Science Society, Art@IITGN, and the departments of Cognitive and Brain Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences at IITGN, organised the ‘Art and Cognition Confluence 2024’ on February 10 and 11, 2024.
The two-day residency brought together a unique blend of artists and neuroscientists/researchers from India and abroad for a series of immersive expert talks on the themes of: Art, Minds, and Brains; Music & Mental Health; Neuroaesthetics: The Science of Art; Dance & Emotion; Visual Thinking; What does Drawing Do?; Cajal’s Legacy: Art, Perception and Persona; Art & Cognition through Comics; and AI & Art.

On the first day, Kohinoor Darda, a cognitive neuroscientist, professional Indian classical dancer, and founder and director of the Advancement and Research in the Sciences and Arts (ARISA) Foundation, delivered a talk on ‘Neuroaesthetics: Exploring the Science of Art’. She explained how neuroaesthetics involves applying the science of the brain to the study of art and discussed how important aspects like culture, context, and emotions influence people’s perception of art.
Prof Frederick Coolidge, adjunct faculty at IITGN and a professor of Psychology at the University of Colorado, USA, talked about ‘Cerebellum & Creativity’ and explained how the cerebellum, an important portion of the human brain, tweaks ideas, images, thoughts, and motor movements that influence our creativity. Cognitive scientist, photographer, filmmaker, and writer Dyutiman Mukhopadhyay conducted a workshop on ‘The Image in Context: Exploring Narrative, Color, and Context through Photography’ that focused on understanding, using, and creating photographs and how context affects meaning-making and emotions experienced by a person. The session on ‘What Does Drawing Do?’ by Andrea Kantrowitz, an artist, educator, and director of the Art Education Program at the State University of New York, discussed using drawing to extend and reflect on one’s thought processes. She said, “Some purposes of drawing include observing, visualising, remembering, and reflecting. It makes our thoughts visible. Using drawing to think and learn can be really valuable.”
Shantala Hegde, a neuropsychologist at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences and a musician, through her talk on ‘Music & Mental Health’, looked at music from a neuroscience perspective and said, “Music, one of the higher-order neurocognitive functions of the brain, can be used as a tool to understand the functioning of mind and behaviours. Actively engaging with music corresponds to positive mental health, including intellectual, emotional, social, environmental, physical, and spiritual health.”
The second day of the residency witnessed more fascinating talks and workshops. Roshan Sahi, a visual artist at Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology, spoke about ‘Visual Thinking: Rang – Rasa – Raga’ and through various sketching, drawing, colouring, and painting tasks given to the participants, he explained how the experience of an aesthetic form emerges through the interaction between colour (Rang), emotions (Rasa), and melodic expression (Raga). Prof Vinod Goel, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at York University in Toronto, Canada, delivered a talk on ‘Art, Minds and Brains’ and explained what art is in terms of the structure of symbol systems. According to Prof Goel, “The structure of symbol systems matters. What we imagine as a depiction based on a particular description would differ for different people.”
A cancer researcher turned comics artist, Prof Argha Manna, Artist-in-Resident at IITGN, conducted a session on ‘Drawing Thoughts in Sequence: Exploring the Relationship between Art and Cognition through Comics’. This workshop explored critical thinking, visualising scientific concepts, and cognition through comics. One of its tasks involved encouraging participants to think abstractly, view the world from new angles, and translate it into short comics. Prof Argha said, “The beauty of comics is that the process is abstract, but the output is often concrete. Comics are the shape of your thoughts as text and images in a rhizomatic relationship. Include comics as a part of your learning process. Apart from prose, if you can also draw the science behind why the sky is blue, you really know the process!”
Prof Dawn Hunter, a renowned visual artist, associate professor, and a distinguished faculty member at the University of South Carolina’s School of Visual Arts and Design, delivered a talk on ‘The Fusion of Artistry, Perception, and Persona in Cajal’s Legacy’, to discuss the work of Santiago Ramon y Cajal, a Spanish neuroscientist and Nobel Prize winner in 1900, who is also known as the father of modern neuroscience. Gayatri Nerpagar, a Sabarmati Bridge Research Fellow at IITGN’s Department of Cognitive and Brain Sciences and a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, talked about ‘Navarasa: Exploring the Embodiment and Perception of Emotions’. She used various activities during the session to explain how Navarasa fits into certain cognitive science theories.
Prof Jaison Manjaly, Coordinator of the Confluence and the Jasubhai Memorial Chair Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at IITGN, conducted the final session on ‘AI & Art’ and explored the subject by discussing various questions such as: What is a machine?, What is the difference between humans and machines?, Are humans machines?, and so on.
All the sessions of the Art and Cognition Confluence 2024 involved lively Q&A and discussion segments among the participants and experts, which further offered critical insights into various facets of art and cognition, which enable us to make sense of the world around us and respond to it. The confluence of art and cognition is an intersection where creativity and aesthetics come together to shape our perceptions, emotions, and intellectual abilities.

"Unprotected: The Link Between Missed Vaccines and Cancer Risks"
By
Dr. N. Senthil Kumar PhD,
Saveetha College of physiotherapy, SIMATS, Chennai
Ms. Akshaya. V, MPT Saveetha College of physiotherapy, SIMATS, Chennai
Missing the HPV vaccine in the immunization schedule can leave individuals vulnerable to HPV infection and its associated complications, including cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers. If someone has missed receiving the HPV vaccine according to the recommended schedule, they need to catch up on their vaccination as soon as possible.
HPV VACCINE
Boys and girls aged 9 -12 should receive the HPV vaccine. To be effective, the vaccination should be completed by age 13. 9vHPV administration is an intramuscular (IM) injection in the deltoid region or anterior lateral thigh area. Current vaccination recommendations are based on the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
Age 9 to 15 years: Two doses of the HPV vaccine are recommended for most patients. The second dose of the HPV vaccine is administered 6 to 12 months after the first dose. Adolescents who have received two doses less than five months apart require a third dose of the HPV vaccine.
Age 15 to 26 years: Three doses of the HPV vaccine are recommended for teens and young adults who start the series at 15 through 26 years. The recommended three-dose schedule is 0, 1 to 2, and 6 months. Three doses are recommended for a patient with immune-
compromised conditions (e.g., HIV infection, immunosuppressive therapy)
Age 27 to 45 years: Most adults in this age group would have very minimal benefits from vaccination. Individuals who are not already immunized to HPV (e.g., a previously unvaccinated person who has never had sex) and the person at risk for acquiring a newer
HPV infection shortly (e.g., who plans to have sex with a new partner) might benefit from vaccination.
Debunking Myths and Misconceptions: The route of HPV transmission is primarily through skin-to-skin or skin-to-mucosa contact. Sexual transmission is the most documented, but there have been studies suggesting non-sexual courses. The horizontal transfer of HPV includes fomites, fingers, and mouth, skin contact (other than sexual).
Vertical transmission from mother to child is another HPV transfer course. Several studies have emphasized the possibility of infection through the amniotic fluid, or the placenta, or via contact with maternal genital mucosa during natural birth.
Overcoming Barriers to Vaccination: While the HPV vaccine offers significant benefits, barriers to vaccination persist, including cost, access, and cultural factors. Efforts to increase vaccine accessibility, such as implementing school-based vaccination programs and
subsidizing vaccine costs, are essential in reaching underserved populations. Additionally, culturally sensitive education initiatives can address cultural beliefs and promote vaccine acceptance within diverse communities.
HPV Vaccination for Men’s Health: While cervical cancer is often associated with HPV, the virus can also cause other cancers in men, including anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. By getting vaccinated, men can significantly reduce their risk of developing these types of cancers later in life.
