MathWorks Predicts 2026 as the Breakthrough Year for Unified Satellite–5G Networks
Bangalore, Jan 9: MathWorks, the leading developer of mathematical computing software, today predicted a major shift in the global connectivity landscape, with 2026 expected to be the first year when satellite and 5G networks will start functioning as a unified system, rather than parallel infrastructures. The company said it expects hybrid satellite-5G connectivity to move from pilot projects into real-world deployment with 3GPP Release 17 and 18, enabling deeper integration of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) and Terrestrial Networks (TN). This convergence is expected to unlock a new generation of resilient, globally accessible communication services, reshaping applications in mobility, public safety, IoT, and remote connectivity.
The 3GPP Release 17 standard provides a baseline for NTN-TN interoperability, specifying reliability and latency parameters. Release 18 expands support for NTN-IoT and higher frequency bands, which are critical for scalable, high-throughput architectures.
“2026 is going to mark the moment when satellite links start behaving like a natural extension of existing 5G networks,” said Mike McLernon, Principal Technical Marketing Engineer, MathWorks. “For engineers, this means building systems that can operate seamlessly across sky and ground with critical simulation-led design.”
India is a key market poised to accelerate NTN-TN adoption. With operators exploring space-based coverage for rural regions and emergency communications, the country is expected to play a central role in bringing hybrid connectivity to scale.
This shift will introduce new design challenges for telecom R&D teams, ranging from satellite-cell handovers and multi-band transceiver design to high-mobility user scenarios and real-time coordination between ground and space systems. As telcos race to deliver direct-to-device satellite services, hybrid networks will demand more complex testing, simulation, and system-level validation.
“NTNs will not be replacing TNs; rather, they will be augmenting them, forming a hybrid ecosystem that will define the next generation of global wireless connectivity,” said McLernon. “A major technical focus for wireless engineers is to ensure reliable transitions between satellite and terrestrial links.”
Interoperability between NTNs and TNs is paramount, as handover management and resource coordination will ultimately determine the success of the overall system design. For the RF community, the emergence of NTN-TN networks also signals a growing need for flexible, multi-band transceivers and robust channel modeling across variable propagation environments.

From celebration to chaos: Rashi’s wedding leaves Pushpa at an emotional breaking point in Sony SAB’s Pushpa Impossible
Sony SAB’s Pushpa Impossible continues to strike a chord with audiences through the inspiring journey of Pushpa (Karuna Pandey), an ordinary woman with extraordinary grit. From a devoted homemaker to a determined lawyer, the show traces her rise against every challenge, as she refuses to be defined by life’s setbacks and remains steadfast in her beliefs and resilience.

In the upcoming episodes, Pushpa’s daughter Rashi (Akshaya Hindalkar) marries Rishabh (Shrey Maradiya) amid intense drama. Before the wedding, Swara (Pari Bhatti) suspects Rishabh of gaslighting Rashi with false promises, including a flat he never intended to buy. When her concerns are dismissed, a furious Swara runs away with Titli (Bhoomi Ramola) to meet her mother Kadambari (Brinda Trivedi) in jail, triggering panic during the wedding. Kadambari manipulates Titli into believing Pushpa was responsible for her father Jugal’s (Anshul Trivedi) death, leading Titli to leave home and move in with Viren (Hemant Kher). Pushpa is left at a painful crossroads as three daughters drift away from her. After the wedding, Rashi begins to see cracks in her marriage as Rishabh continues to emotionally manipulate her.
As Pushpa battles heartbreak on multiple fronts, will she be able to save her daughter trapped in a toxic marriage?
Speaking about the ongoing track, Karuna Pandey, who essays the role of Pushpa, shares,
“This phase is one of the most painful chapters in Pushpa’s journey. As a mother, watching your children drift away, misunderstand you, and make choices that could hurt them is heartbreaking. Pushpa has always believed in raising strong, independent daughters, but here she realises that empowerment also means knowing when to step in and protect. This track reflects the silent strength of a mother who may be breaking inside, yet refuses to give up on her children or her values.”

Generative AI 2026: Businesses Focus on Real Value Amid Growing Skepticism
Businesses worldwide have invested billions of dollars into generative AI, yet recent headlines have raised questions about whether organizations are truly seeing returns. Despite this skepticism, the trend is not a retreat—it’s a shift toward refinement. Fewer companies expect to be “just starting” or stuck in pilots in 2026, while more are integrating AI into core operations, according to a recent IEEE global survey of technology leaders.
The report, “The Impact of Technology in 2026 and Beyond: an IEEE Global Study,” highlights increasing adoption of generative AI. Respondents were asked to identify the stage of AI adoption in their organization. Compared to 2025:
-
Just Starting: 1% (down 4 points)
-
High Expectations / Trying Small Projects: 8% (down 25 points)
-
Challenged / Rethinking Approach: 4% (down 14 points)
-
Learning / Seeing Some Benefits: 13% (down 11 points)
-
Using Regularly, but Selectively: 39% (up 19 points)
-
Rapidly Integrating / Expecting Bottom-Line Results: 35% (new in 2026)
A Period of Skepticism
New technologies often follow the “hype cycle”, a pattern where innovations surge in popularity, experience disillusionment, and eventually mature into practical value. Generative AI has been at the peak of expectations, but nearly one-third of projects are expected to be abandoned. McKinsey reports that while nearly eight in ten companies use generative AI, a similar proportion sees no measurable bottom-line impact.
“We’re entering a period of healthy skepticism following the natural technology adoption cycle,” said IEEE Senior Member Santhosh Sivasubraman. “This reflects a maturing understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations. Companies that rushed deployments without planning are now reassessing approaches for more thoughtful implementation.”
Why Many AI Projects Fail
Survey data indicates a key challenge: overestimating AI reliability. The confidence of AI systems, particularly chatbots, often leads to unrealistic expectations. Half of the respondents cited over-reliance on AI and potential inaccuracies as top concerns.
“Inflated expectations have led leaders to imagine digital workers instead of systems designed for clear, measurable outcomes,” said IEEE Senior Member Eleanor Watson.
Common pitfalls include applying advanced models where simpler analytics suffice and using poor-quality data. Another frequent misalignment is confusing AI’s emotional appeal with functional value. According to IEEE Member Ning Hu, organizations often invest in chatbots or virtual assistants that sound friendly and empathetic but deliver little measurable impact.
Generating Real Value
Generative AI’s most reliable returns are emerging in operational back-end processes, Hu notes. Examples include:
-
Automated order-to-cash workflows
-
Inventory replenishment driven by predictive analytics
-
Robotic process automation (RPA) for finance and HR
-
Precision control in manufacturing or medical imaging
The survey identified cybersecurity, supply chain and warehouse automation, and software development as the top use cases for AI in 2026. Another resilient approach is sandboxed experimentation, where AI models explore creative solutions in isolated environments before outputs are transferred to production.
“In all these scenarios, AI’s value is measured in concrete, business-critical metrics, not user sentiment,” Hu said. “Sometimes the most valuable AI is surprisingly mundane—but highly effective.”
In short, the future of generative AI lies not in flashy applications, but in its ability to drive tangible, measurable business outcomes.
