70% Indians Fall Short on Daily Fibre Intake

India, May 30, 2025: On the occasion of the World Digestive Day, Aashirvaad Happy Tummy platform released an insightful analysis of the nation’s digestive health based on the responses provided by over 8 lakh people. The results included over 1.27 lakh respondents from Fiber Meter and over 7.4 lakh from Digestive Quotient on Happy Tummy. Aashirvaad Happy Tummy is an online platform by Aashirvaad Atta with Multigrains, which serves as a comprehensive guide focused on digestive health and fibre intake.

The Fiber Meter report revealed that 70% Indians who responded to the survey, did not consume the recommended daily fibre intake. The gap is wider among women, with 74% reporting inadequate fibre intake compared to 64% among men, highlighting that majority of people missed upon an important component of digestive health. Research links low fibre intake to common digestive issues such as constipation and chronic conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Highlighting the importance of Digestive health, Dr. B S Ramakrishna, Director & Senior Consultant -Medical Gastroenterology, SRM Institutes for Medical Science, Chennai stated “The central role of the digestive system and the gut microbiota in development and perpetuation of many chronic diseases is now well appreciated. Scientific evidence consistently highlights the role of dietary fibre—particularly from whole grains and multigrain sources—in supporting gut microbiota diversity and enhancing overall digestive health. On World Digestive Health Day 2025, with the theme Nourish to Flourish, it is imperative to promote fibre-rich diets as a cornerstone of preventive health strategies to address the dual burden of undernutrition and non-communicable diseases.”

Mr. Anuj Rustagi, Chief Operating Officer – Staples and Adjacencies, ITC Foods, said, “Fibre is foundational pillar for our digestive health and yet daily diets of a majority don’t reflect this priority. With most people underestimating the role of fibre, which acts like a natural panacea for the digestive system. The survey demonstrates a serious fibre gap in Indian diets, which merits urgent correction. Simple shifts—like including multigrains, vegetables, fruits, and adequate water—can go a long way in improving gut health.”

Talking on the importance of Diet & Digestive health, Ms. Anita Jatana, Chief Dietician at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital Delhi said “Increase in prevalence of digestive health issues is mostly due to poor dietary and lifestyle habits. Consuming a diverse array of fiber-rich foods, particularly whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables are essential for promoting optimal digestive health. These foods are also naturally rich in essential micronutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that contribute to overall physiological well-being. Multigrains like whole grain wheat flour, oats and millets must be incorporated in daily diet instead of refined grains. Complementing balanced diet with adequate proteins, healthy fats, essential vitamins and minerals and fiber intake with proper sleep, hydration, physical activity and relaxation supports digestive health.”

These findings are based on analysis of self-reported responses submitted between 2021– early 2025 on Aashirvaad Happy Tummy platform, with respondents from across India.

Chamkili’s Secrets on the Brink of Exposure in Shemaroo Umang’s Badi Haveli Ki Chhoti Thakurain

shemaro

In Shemaroo Umang’s show Badi Haveli Ki Chhoti Thakurain, the drama is heating up as the web of lies spun by Chamkili (played by Ishita Ganguly) threatens to unravel. Viewers have seen how Chamkili has skillfully manipulated the entire haveli through her cunning words and calculated moves. But now, with the recent promo hinting at a massive revelation, it seems her sins are catching up with her.

Will karma finally play its part? Or will Chamkili outsmart everyone once again?

Amidst this unfolding chaos stands Chaina, played by Diksha Dhami—a character who has walked the fine line between right and wrong, not for personal gain but to protect those she loves. She shares, “When I first read the character of Chaina in Badi Haveli Ki Chhoti Thakurain, I saw someone who wasn’t black or white—but deeply human. She lied, yes, but only to protect her family. Honestly, haven’t we all been there? Sometimes we twist the truth to save a friend or to protect someone’s feelings. My mom always told me that telling the truth is easier than telling a lie, because one lie. leads to a web of lies, complicating situations. This life lesson stayed with me, and through Chaina, I’ve been able to bring those real emotions to the screen.”

Diksha adds, “In our show, we see two very different kinds of people—Chaina, who bends the truth for the sake of others, and then Chamkili, who is so deeply entangled in lies spun for her own gain that redemption feels impossible. It’s a powerful contrast that mirrors real life too—where the intent behind your actions truly defines who you are. Chaina’s journey from a street-smart girl to a fierce voice for justice is close to my heart. And now, as Chamkili’s web of lies starts to unravel, the big question is—will this break her or turn her more dangerous than ever?”

With tensions rising and the stakes higher than ever, viewers can expect Badi Haveli Ki Chhoti Thakurain to deliver one of its most powerful revelations yet. Will Chamkili’s secrets finally come to light?

Apollo Cancer Centres Introduces OraLife – the Screening Program for Early Detection of Oral Cancer

Delhi, May 30, 2025: Tobacco use is no longer a personal habit—it’s a national health crisis. India accounts for nearly one-third of global oral cancer cases, with 77,000 new diagnoses and 52,000 deaths annually. The survival rate stands at just 50%, significantly lower than in developed countries (link). This alarming trend is compounded by rising tobacco consumption across both urban and rural India, as highlighted by the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (2022–23) (Link), which noted increased spending on paan, tobacco, and other intoxicants.

On account of World No Tobacco Day, Apollo Cancer Centres (ACC) has launched #OraLife, a proactive screening initiative focused on the early detection of oral cancer. The program emphasizes public awareness, routine screening, and targeted intervention particularly for high-risk individuals, including tobacco users, alcohol consumers, those with HPV-16 infection, and people with prior oral lesions.

As part of this initiative, ACC has partnered with the Isha Foundation to provide holistic support for individuals seeking to overcome tobacco addiction. This collaboration integrates physical health interventions with mental and emotional wellness support.

“Tobacco users are six to seven times more likely to develop oral cancer than non-users. Oral cancer is one of the few cancers that can be detected early through a simple oral examination. With this program, our goal is to detect cases early—before it’s too late. Our objective is to foster a culture of preventive healthcare. Oral cancer is highly treatable when detected early. We urge everyone over 30, especially tobacco users to undergo screening” said Dr. Gopal Kumar, Senior Consultant – Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Delhi.

Oral cancer is the most common cancer among Indian men and is rising steadily among women. Incidence rates vary widely across states: West Bengal reports the highest, while Kerala sees the lowest. Maharashtra, Ahmedabad Urban, and Meghalaya also report alarmingly high figures—largely driven by tobacco use. Chennai-based studies have identified an increase in cancers of the tongue and floor of the mouth, sites known for high metastatic potential. The buccal mucosa remains the most frequently affected site nationwide. Notably, smokeless tobacco use is rising among women, contributing to a narrowing gender gap in incidence rates.(Link)

Risk factors—such as the combined use of smokeless tobacco, betel quid, and alcohol—are especially prevalent in underserved communities with limited access to preventive care. The disease is increasingly affecting individuals aged 31–50, with poor nutrition further exacerbating the risk.

The #OraLife, the Oral Cancer Screening Program involves a comprehensive visual and tactile oral examination conducted by trained head & neck surgeons. It aims to identify early warning signs such as persistent ulcers, red or white patches, lumps, painless and non-healing sores, many of which are often overlooked.

To support mental and emotional recovery, and to incorporate spiritual well-being into its tobacco cessation efforts, individuals will have access to a simple yet effective 7-minute guided meditation led by Sadhguru.

The Isha Foundation has extended its support through the Miracle of Mind app, a free meditation platform designed to help individuals take charge of their well-being. With over 2 million downloads, the app offers guided meditations, streak tracking, personalized messages, and motivational rewards—creating a supportive environment for those on the journey to overcome addiction and improve their mental health.

“This initiative represents Apollo’s leadership in holistic oncology care “Our mission goes beyond treatment—we aim to equip individuals with the tools and knowledge to take control of their health. Our collaboration with Isha Foundation is a testament to our belief in integrated care, where early detection and mental wellness are both critical pillars.” said Dr Bipin Puri, Director Medical Services, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals

In addition to the health burden, the initiative also addresses the financial and emotional toll of tobacco use. Through the #CutTheCost campaign, Apollo Cancer Centres calls on tobacco users to re-evaluate the true cost of their habits—not just in terms of health, but also financial security and emotional well-being. The campaign reinforces the value of early detection and long-term lifestyle change as the most powerful tools for prevention.
