Breakthrough Treatment Options Offer Hope for Hemophilia Patients

Hemophilia meaning love (philia) of blood (hemo) has been referred to as the disease of the kings,” as is often described in the descent of Queen Victoria of England. Haemophilia affects 1 in 10000 live births. The disease is of two kinds-Hemophilia A and B. Hemophilia A is more prevalent (80% to 85% of the total haemophilia population) than haemophilia B.

Hemophilia is usually an inherited condition and is caused by the congenital deficiency of clotting factors in the blood. As a result, your blood doesn’t clot properly causing prolonged and excessive bleeding after minor trauma or sometimes even spontaneously. Haemophilia A and B are caused by a deficiency of factors 8 and 9 respectively.

The diagnosis combines an index of suspicion due to a family history of bleeding, clinical manifestation, as well as laboratory testing. Your doctor does a simple test of PTT, mixing study and factor assays and confirms the diagnosis. Hemophilia is diagnosed if the factor activity is less than 40% of normal factor activity. The disease is categorised into mild, moderate and severe forms by quantification of factors activity done in a good laboratory and interpreted by an expert.

Both haemophilia A and B are inherited via an X-linked recessive pattern which means all the males carrying the affected gene will have the disease and 100% of females born from affected fathers will be carriers. Affected men have affected sons and carrier daughters. Carrier females have a 50% chance of affected sons and a 50% chance of carrier daughters. Up to a third of haemophilia cases happen sporadically which means that there is no evidence of the in family history

The haemophiliac kid can present at varying stages based on their severity as joint swelling (knee, elbow, ankles commonly), oral bleeding, skin bleeds, prolonged bleeding following tooth extraction or tonsillectomy or post-surgery and major bleeds such as brain bleeds, and abdominal bleeds. Repeated bleeding affects the day-to-day quality of life and causes arthropathy or destroys the joints permanently and should be dealt with as a matter of importance.

While performing pain management, one should avoid aspirin and take painkillers with doctors’ guidance as chances of bleeding may increase. All vaccinations to be given intramuscularly should be given by experts or avoided. The haematologist’s advice is PRICE therapy in case of a bleeding episode known acronym for Protect the joint, Rest, ice application, compression, and elevation. Immobilization of painful joints, early initiation of physical therapy and exercise program, maintaining strength, and preventing further injury by gait training patients go hand-in-hand. The treatment is fulfilling the deficiency that nature has bestowed i.e. urgent factor replacement. These are intravenous drugs given as a replacement basis as and when required or prophylactic to avoid joint bleeds. There are also newer subcutaneous once-a-month injections available, Emicizumab that has changed the life of haemophiliac kids.

Overall, haemophilia is an inherited condition. The median life expectancy with care and prophylaxis is reaching normal values. Adequate counselling, genetics opinion, and haematologist consultation are needed. In case of family history, be alert for testing during pregnancy. If your child is haemophilia consult an expert haematologist, always carry factor backups for emergencies with adequate storage, have appropriate peri-procedural consultation, screening for “inhibitors”, and adequate and planned follow-ups. Gene therapy for haemophilia has progressed remarkably and could soon become a reality.

Jalandhar: 20th April 2024– Lovely Professional University (LPU) Campus got transformed into a vibrant realm of Indian culture & heritage when its annual mega cultural fest ‘One India-2024’ commenced with great splendour and spectacle. This 12th edition of the fest witnessed an awe-inspiring display of equality, diversity, and inclusivity as students from across the country showcased the magnificence of their respective states, and joined hands with others.

For this, a large number of Indian festivals, rituals, cultures, traditions, dances, songs were showcased and performed on, in full mirth and merriment. Students raised slogans for oneness, particularly “Bharat Mata Kee Jai” and “Hum Sab Ek Haen”, amid showcasing of large diversity of the country. The fest had an impressive line-up of activities, featuring 29 exhibition stalls that provided a glimpse into the rich heritage, art, and cuisine of each state and union territory. On-looking 25000+ students were also enthralled by the diverse range of products, handicrafts, and other related things that were on display. The fest also showcased 29 folk music & dance-performances, 3 kms long variegated cultural procession- which added magnanimity and lustre to the fest.

Carrying the theme of “Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity”; this year’s fest aimed to celebrate the glorious Indian philosophy that binds the entire nation together. The festival welcomed students from all corners of India, who not only represented their states but also collaborated with their peers from different regions.

The event was celebrative and informative with massive presentations made by 4000+ participating LPU students, hailing from all Indian states & union territories. They collaborated with one another to learn and imbibe the goodness of other cultures as well. Even international students of 40+ countries worked together with their Indian counterparts to prove the fest grand in form and aim. The result was a harmonious amalgamation of cultures, traditions, perspectives which showcased the true spirit of a united India.

Founder Chancellor of LPU & Rajya Sabha Member Hon’ble Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal inaugurated the fest by releasing tri-coloured balloons. Dr Mittal congratulated all at the fest for upholding India’s magnanimity in its diversity, as also maintained at the campus itself. Dr Mittal encouraged students to always stand united in all of their endeavours for the betterment of the community, country and the world. Pro-Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal accompanied him. While visiting the individual stalls raised by students; both of them appreciated the incredible enthusiasm and collaboration displayed. They inspired students to go ahead in all unified works for the betterment of the student community.

Along with unity in diversity, inclusion too ensured that students across varying identities feel valued, welcomed, respected, included, represented, heard, and that they can contribute collectively with a voice of their own. What truly set this edition of ‘One India’ apart was the active participation of international students as well. Hailing from different corners of the world, they worked hand in hand with their Indian counterparts, further enriching the festival’s grandeur and demonstrating the spirit of global unity as well. Their contributions highlighted the event’s underlying message of fostering cultural exchange and embracing diversity.

An ‘Art Exhibition-Abhivykati’ was also organized where different departments presented their exclusive creations of their students. The English department displayed original poems, comics, slogans and more to publish soon; Fine Arts exhibited art pieces in diverse forms; Architecture put forth artisan works in diverse textures; Fashion came out with dresses for different occasions; Hotel Management with delicious delicacies; and so on.

Different Schools of the university represented different states of India separately, and their students worked together to bring out the great aspects of the individual states for 28,000 other on-looking students. The conclusive occasion will vouchsafe the cultural showcase and fashion show amid continuous rhyming performances of all the states of India.

Illustrative factor of the celebration was that students of a particular state were seen working and performing for the other state. Andhra Pradesh students were seen in the Punjab tableau; whereas, Kerala students showcased all about Maharashtra state. Kolkata: ICICI Bank has announced a range of initiatives to make banking more convenient to its senior citizen customers in West Bengal. As part of this programme, the Bank has set up desks with Relationship Managers dedicated to service senior citizens at all branches in the state. The desks offer personalised assistance to senior citizens for various banking requirements including providing form 15H, life certificate, fixed deposits and interest certificate. In case the senior citizens want to avail of these services from the convenience of their home, they can do so digitally on the Bank’s retail banking application, iMobile Pay. Additionally, the Bank has made banking services available at the doorstep of senior citizens to provide improved convenience to them throughout the state.

Modular Interoperability Layer Union to Integrate with the AggLayer, Connecting the Polygon and Cosmos Ecosystems

DOVER, DE—20th April 2024 — Union Labs, the modular interoperability layer, will be integrating with the AggLayer, a decentralized service developed by Polygon Labs that safely connects chains to enable shared state and liquidity, to facilitate message passing and asset transfers between the Polygon ecosystem chains connected to the AggLayer and the broader Cosmos ecosystem. This integration will position Union as a key IBC gateway in and out of the AggLayer, a unified zk-bridge connecting sovereign, modular chains while maintaining the unified liquidity and UX of the monolithic architecture.

The integration will unlock greater liquidity access and movement between AggLayer-connected chains and IBC-enabled chains, ensuring a trustless, efficient, and low-latency process. Layer 2 solutions leveraging Polygon CDK will benefit from the seamless access to liquidity without vendor lock-in, freedom for technical innovation through open standards, and unrestricted liquidity movement and composability with other Web3 protocols, provided by the integration.
