11, 01, 2024: The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) organized an enlightening workshop titled “Social Determinants of Lifestyle Related Chronic and Non-Communicable Diseases among Adult Women in India.” The event took place on the 10th of January 2024 at the Dept. of HSS Auditorium, IIT Roorkee.
The workshop commenced with an Inaugural Session featuring esteemed guests and experts in the field.
The Director of IIT Roorkee, Prof. K. K. Pant, expressed his enthusiasm for the workshop, stating, “Guided by a legacy of 176 years, IIT Roorkee stands as a beacon of excellence, continually striving to illuminate the path of knowledge and societal progress. In hosting events like the International Workshop on Social Determinants of Lifestyle-Related Diseases, we not only bridge academia with real-world challenges but also reaffirm our commitment to shaping a healthier and more enlightened society. Focused on addressing the escalating burden of chronic diseases, especially among vulnerable populations, this initiative aims to bridge research gaps and deliver evidence-based solutions. By concentrating on women of reproductive age in northern states, the project seeks to disseminate vital health knowledge and make a lasting impact on individuals, communities, and states. This workshop underscores IIT Roorkee’s commitment to societal well-being and the pursuit of knowledge that transcends boundaries.”
The Chief Guest, Dr. Sanjeeb Kumar Patjoshi, IPS, Government of Kerala, delivered an insightful address, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaborations to address the complex issue of lifestyle-related diseases. He remarked, “IIT Roorkee’s initiative to delve into the social determinants of health is commendable. Such collaborations between academia and industry are pivotal for developing effective strategies to tackle health challenges in our society. He also emphasised pivotal role of rural Panchayats and almost 14 lakh women elected representatives in these local self governments in awareness campaign, aggregating data, secondly focusing on nursing staff mostly women in India for their hands on experience insights in this research.”
The Inaugural Session was marked by the presence of key figures, including Prof. Anindya J. Mishra, the Convener, extending a warm welcome to guests, and Prof. S. P Singh, Head of Humanities & Social Sciences, offering insights into the department’s significance. Prof. Sabu S. Padmadas, the International Principal Investigator from the University of Southampton, provided a comprehensive overview of the project, while Co-Principal Investigator Prof. Tapas Mishra outlined impactful pathways. Notably, the session also highlighted the crucial roles of Co-Convenors Prof. Pooja Garg and Prof. Falguni Pattanaik, emphasizing their pivotal contributions to the organization of the workshop. This collaborative effort of distinguished individuals exemplifies the workshop’s commitment to excellence and the seamless coordination essential for its success.
The workshop, graced by esteemed resource persons like Dr. Yutaro Setoya of WHO, Prof. Pradyot Ranjan Jena from NIT Surathkal, and Dr. Swati Sharma from VIT Chennai Campus, showcases a convergence of global perspectives on NCDs and co-morbidities. Their valuable insights contribute to a nuanced understanding of lifestyle-related chronic diseases among adult women in India. This event not only underscores IIT Roorkee’s commitment to academic excellence but also emphasizes its dedication to societal contributions. The inclusion of international perspectives, represented by Prof. Sabu S. Padmadas and Prof. Tapas Mishra from the University of Southampton, highlights the institution’s global outreach and collaborative ethos. The workshop’s sessions, led by eminent speakers like Prof. Anand Krishnan and Mrs. Kusum Ghildiyal, delve into critical aspects of gender and non-communicable diseases, utilizing population-level datasets and addressing intricate social determinants, reflecting the workshop’s diverse expertise.
The workshop concluded with valuable insights during the Deliberations and Way Forward session, led by Dr. Tulika Bhattacharyya from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) India Office.
Prof. Anindya J. Mishra, the Convener of the workshop, expressed his gratitude, stating, “This workshop has provided a platform for rich discussions and collaborative efforts to address the social determinants of lifestyle-related diseases among women. I am thankful to all the participants for their valuable contributions.”
The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Prof. Anindya J. Mishra, and participants left with a sense of collective commitment towards addressing the challenges highlighted during the workshop.

IIT Kanpur joint-study on Cost-Effective Alloy for Energy Storage recognized by Nature Magazine
Bengaluru, 11 January 2024: A research paper and study on the use of a special alloy that could make it easier and affordable to convert and store energy from renewable sources by Prof. Krishanu Biswas of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur and a team of multi-institutional researchers has been highlighted by Nature, the world’s leading multidisciplinary science journal, as one of the ‘high-impact research papers from India that are shaping science’.
Prof. Krishanu Biswas and fellow researchers from IIT Mandi, IIT Kharagpur and IISc Bangalore, conducted research on a special kind of material called a high entropy alloy (HEA), comprising a mix of five elements; Cobalt, Iron, Gallium, Nickel, and Zinc, for its use in splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen. Water splitting is essential in many technological applications such as electrolyzer, fuel cells, and catalysis. The most important aspect of water splitting is its ability to efficiently separate water, abundantly available on the earth, into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen is considered a clean substitute for fossil fuels with net-zero emissions. This research categorically demonstrates the effectiveness of this innovative alloy, surpassing the performance and durability of expensive materials such as ruthenium oxide, currently used for the same purpose. The materials of the study are made up of earth-abundant elements, making it sustainable and easy to fabricate for application. The research paper titled ‘Low-cost high entropy alloy (HEA) for high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction (OER),’ was published in the Nano Research Journal in its edition dated 2022, 15 (6).
The study has wide ramifications in green hydrogen economy in which energy-rich hydrogen is extracted from water through electrochemical water-splitting. Electrochemical water splitting is a highly promising sustainable and pollution-free approach for green hydrogen and oxygen production. The process requires two electrodes being immersed in an electrolyte solution. The chemical reactions at the electrodes driving the production of oxygen and hydrogen gas require efficient bifunctional catalyst. However, the process was not commercially viable so far, as most electrochemical systems use rare and expensive metals that restrict their use in large-scale applications. On the other hand, lower-cost systems were not being able to achieve efficient catalysis. The novel alloy catalyst designed, developed, and tested by Prof. Biswas and his collaborators can make this process easier and more affordable by using low-cost high-entropy alloy to store energy from renewable sources, allowing the use of clean energy. This could further aggravate our stride towards a cleaner environment, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and mitigating global warming.
In addition to Prof. Krishanu Biswas, the other researchers on the team included Dr. Nirmal Kumar Katiyar from IIT Kanpur, Prof. Aditi Halder and Dr. Lalita Sharma from IIT Mandi, Prof. Chandra Sekhar Tiwary and Dr. Rakesh Das from IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Abhishek K. Singh, Dr. Arko Parui and Dr. Ritesh Kumar from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

Dreamz Production House and Dubai Beauty School hosts beauty pageant
New Delhi, January 11, 2024: Dreamz Production House, well known in the fashion industry along with Dubai Beauty School, which provides top-notch education in the beauty industry hosted the grand finale of renowned beauty pageant – ASIA SUPER MODEL 2023 Season-10 recently at Noida Film City. In the Miss Category, Arshia Bhardwaj from Jammu was crowned the winner title “Miss. Asia Super Model 2023” whereas Sonika Yadav from Delhi and Shivani Lakhera from Kotdwar, Uttarakhand achieved the first and second runners up position respectively.

Before joining Swastik Productions, Manish worked in various roles at Zee Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. initially as a part of the hindi movies cluster and then as the Vice President and Head of Marketing for Zee Zest where he showcased his strategic prowess in handling the Zest’s channel and website, contributing to a significant market share in the lifestyle category.
His journey also includes impactful positions at Loktantra Mediatech Pvt Ltd, where, as Chief Marketing Officer he orchestrated a team of marketing professionals for a successful product launch and brand campaign. Manish’s diverse career comprises noteworthy roles at Times Television Network, Star TV Network, Sony Pictures Networks Distribution India, Publicis India, and Percept H, each adding layers to his extensive experience in marketing, brand management and strategic leadership.

Dedication of 17 Ag&p Pratham’s Cng Stations to Serve the People of Hassan
Hassan, 11th January 2024: Hon’ble Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Shri Hardeep Singh Puri dedicated 17 AG&P Pratham’s CNG stations in Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu Geographical Area to the people today, in the presence of Shri Abhilesh Gupta – Managing Director and CEO, AG&P Pratham and Shri Takeshi Shinohara – Senior General Manager, Osaka Gas, Japan, along with other dignitaries from AG&P Pratham, Osaka Gas and HPCL. In the state of Karnataka, AG&P Pratham operates in 15 districts catering to 55% of the geographical area.
Speaking at the Inauguration ceremony of AG&P Pratham’s CNG station, Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas appreciated AG&P Pratham’s efforts in building natural gas-powered infrastructure in the country. The Minister welcomed the Japanese investment in Indian CGD sector and sought more Japanese investment in development of gas infrastructure in India. He talked about the technological advancement in the gas sector in Japan and expressed his hope that the collaboration with AG&P Pratham would ensure bringing Japanese technology into Indian operations. He said that this is testament of the commitment of the Government under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to provide people with convenient and environment-friendly energy options. He also said that the availability of CNG and PNG in the region opens a new chapter in the lives of the community and further said that very soon every household in Hassan will have PNG connects. He also talked about Governments’ commitment to phased increase in bio gas blending on CNG and PNG as per recent policy initiatives. He further said that Shri Narendra Modi led Government is working on increasing FDI and improve international collaborations and in developing India as an energy hub.
Shri Abhilesh Gupta, Managing Director and CEO, AG&P Pratham, informed that AG&P Pratham has already invested around 4000 Crores in its GAs and further commitment of another 15000 Crores in the next 6-7 years. He said that we are ready to provide PNG connections to about 2 lakh household in the next few months. Under the visionary leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the able guidance of the Hon’ble Minister the Government has realised the dream of One Nation One Grid and which ensure gas is delivered far-flung areas with optimised logistics costs and removing tax inefficiencies. Our network spans 3400 kms of MDPE pipelines, 900 kms of steel pipelines and 300 CNG Stations. He thanked Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, Chairman, PNGRB for the passion with which PNGRB has been driving creation of CGD infrastructure across the country.
