L&T Finance Ltd. Empowers Over 42 Lakh Community Members through the Digital Sakhi Program

30th July 2024  Mumbai, Maharashtra, India  L&T Finance Ltd. (LTF), one of the leading Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) has empowered over 42 lakh community members so far through the ‘Digital Sakhi’ program which is a key initiative under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The program which was initiated in 2017, has consistently expanded its geographical footprint in 7 states namely, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka and Kerala with a cadre of 1,370 trained Digital Sakhis over the years. The program aims to create awareness on Digital and Financial Literacy amongst the rural population.

Speaking about the progress of the Digital Sakhi program, Ms. Apurva Rathod, Company Secretary & Chief Sustainability Officer at LTF said, “Our Digital Sakhis have played an active role in bridging the last mile gap and facilitating convergence of government schemes, conducting sessions in Gram Sabhas and the State Rural Livelihood Mission programs and supporting the community to obtain the benefits of government schemes. The efforts of Digital Sakhis have been instrumental in bringing the larger community into the ambit of entitlements. Our Digital Sakhi project has continued to invigorate the women empowerment narrative with many women rising up the ranks, from the confines of their homes to being change agents in their community. In FY24, our Digital Sakhis have effectively helped empower over 11 lakh rural communities by promoting digital financial inclusion, providing impetus to 2,400 women entrepreneurs.”

Digital Sakhi is a flagship program of LTF, that equips rural women with the skills and knowledge to confidently impart Digital and Financial Literacy (DFL) training to households in their communities and nurture an ecosystem of digital financial transactions. The program focuses on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 – Gender Equality, wherein women are identified from rural communities and trained extensively on DFL, leadership, and technology. These women are called “Digital Sakhis‟. Each Sakhi is equipped with a mobile tablet with preloaded DFL modules. The program also nurtures women entrepreneurs from the communities, providing them with upskilling and enterprise development training to help them build their businesses and enhance their livelihoods.

In FY 2023-24, under the program, LTF has successfully impanelled 400 Sakhis in the new geographies of Uttar Pradesh (Gorakhpur), Bihar (Supaul), Tamil Nadu (Madurai), and West Bengal (Murshidabad).

Across existing and new program locations of Digital Sakhis, there has been a commendable 12 percent increase in the adoption of digital payments among community members, promoting a cashless economy and enhancing financial inclusion.

Details of progress made in the last financial year

The Digital Sakhi project in Uttar Pradesh at Gorakhpur district was launched in the last financial year and in the first year of the project, more than 1,25,000 individuals were reached through various awareness activities.

Similarly, the project was launched in Bihar at Supaul district and it has started to show results on the ground. In the first year of the project, more than 1,00,000 individuals were reached through various awareness activities.

The Digital Sakhi project was also launched in Tamil Nadu at the Madurai district and in the initial year, more than 1,00,000 individuals were reached through various awareness activities.

Lastly, the project in West Bengal at Murshidabad district was launched last year and during the year more than 1,00,000 individuals were reached through various awareness activities in the first year.

‘Redlight’ serves as a historical testament to human tragedy. The author has spread all the colours of human existence in this short but poignant story. The main character of the story sees ‘Mulago Hospital’ at Kampala’s famous jam-packed red light as a place of faith, sacrifice, and dedication towards the freedom fighters.

The hero of the story, who has received police training, keeps turning his attention to the inconsistencies in African society, far away from India, while simultaneously connecting it with the values and culture of Indian society. He also gets excited after finding the company of non-resident Indians and the ancient Ganesh temple near his residence. He also sees the beautiful blend of tradition and modernity, dazzling nightclubs, and people dying from malaria that has been otherwise eradicated. The hero’s favorite subject is the exploration of the universal social elements of India and Uganda. The story also introduces us to the powerful campaign of Burma’s famous Prime Minister U Shaw against British rule during the Second World War and the poignant story of his being made a prisoner of war.

In the middle of the story, the hero’s daily stop at the traffic red light to watch the hustle and bustle of the local goods market set up at the crossroads, just like in India, becomes his favorite way of life. While the enjoyment of the youthful appearance of the attractive young woman from Kampala, burdened by the basket of juicy mangoes at the red light, reflects the innate desire of the male element, the inquiring about her health and the regret over the habit of haggling over the price of the basket of mangoes is the manifestation of the noblest form of human values.

Through his story, Keshav made ‘Mulago Hospital’ a subject of historical importance which became a metaphor in world fiction. This hospital is like the famous ‘cemetery’ of Paris, filled with the graves of world-famous thinkers, philosophers, and agitators along with the dictators of the French Revolution. During the Second World War, forty-seven prisoners of war brought from Malta by the British oppressive power were kept in ‘Bambo Barracks’ in Uganda, where they fell victim to malaria and ultimately sacrificed their lives at ‘Mulago Hospital’. The ‘Red Light’ story, through the medium of the hospital, forces people from India to Africa to remember the sacrifices of their ancestors who were freedom fighters and have a sense of devotion towards them.

Apart from this, in the story Golki Frame Ke Chashma, all the old things of Bettiah city revolve like a cinema reel. The reason behind the establishment of Maharani Janaki Kunwar College has been depicted wonderfully. George Orwell, Prakash Jha, and Manoj Bajpayee have also been depicted in the same story in a flow of emotions. Even now the people of that city are not aware of this. While reading it, it felt as if the literature of an established author was being read. Faisla and Khilona are beautifully woven together depicting women’s power.

There is a frank and unmatched description of Prayag in Kalpavas. Every person who belongs to that era must read this book. He will definitely consider himself a character in this book. Every story in this book is good, and lively, about me-you-village-home- city. Such non-fiction prose has been written in Bhojpuri after a long time.

The event, held on Sunday morning, marked a significant milestone for Gatorade towards promoting the love and will for playing sports amidst the hustle and bustle of India’s metropolitan cities.

Launched in February earlier this year with its first turf debuting in Mumbai, this initiative by Gatorade is committed to finding people places to play, wherever and whenever space permits in the city. The initiative is aimed at addressing the scarcity of recreational space in urban India through Google Maps data. This may just be how cities look at urban playgrounds in the future. Through this initiative, Gatorade seeks to inspire young individuals to embrace physical activity as a key part of their daily lives.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participants coming together to play and relish the excitement offered by the specially tailored turf, catering to badminton, and basketball aficionados. Delhi witnessed its first turf drop earlier in March in Lajpat Nagar, and the brand is aiming to drop another turf in the city soon.
