West Bengal Records Strong Growth in Mineral Revenue Collection

Kolkata, Sep 17: West Bengal has recorded a significant rise in revenue generated from its mineral resources during the opening months of the 2026-27 financial year, with collections increasing by 32.60 per cent compared with the same period last year.

According to figures released by the State Finance Department, mineral-related tax revenue stood at Rs 567.82 crore between April 16 and August 15, 2026, compared with Rs 428.20 crore during the corresponding period in 2025.

The increase has brought greater attention to the contribution of the state’s mineral-rich districts to public revenue. Birbhum recorded the highest collection at Rs 235 crore, followed by Jhargram at Rs 70.29 crore. East Burdwan contributed Rs 56.12 crore, while West Burdwan accounted for Rs 48.59 crore during the period.

The latest figures indicate that mineral resources continue to play an important role in West Bengal’s economic activity. The sector supports a wider network of businesses linked to mining, transportation, processing and industrial operations, particularly in mineral-producing regions.

The improvement in collections has also been attributed by the State Finance Department to efforts to strengthen revenue monitoring and address leakages in mineral-related collections. This has the potential to improve the state’s ability to mobilise revenue from its natural resources without placing additional pressure on ordinary taxpayers.

For the state economy, stronger mineral revenue provides an additional source of own-tax receipts and can support broader fiscal planning. West Bengal has projected its own tax revenue at Rs 1,30,669.68 crore for 2026-27, compared with Rs 1,11,737.13 crore in the revised estimate for 2025-26.

The mineral sector also has an important business impact at the district level. Mining and related activities generate demand for transport, logistics, equipment, services and other supporting businesses, creating an economic chain that extends beyond the extraction activity itself.

The latest revenue numbers therefore highlight the importance of effective resource management, transparent collection systems and stronger monitoring of mineral-related economic activity.

With mineral-rich districts continuing to contribute significantly to state revenues, sustained improvement in collection mechanisms could strengthen West Bengal’s revenue base while supporting economic activity across mining and allied sectors.
