Indian Students Prioritise Practical Learning and Global Experience, Reveals Oxford International Study

26th June 2025: As the number of Indian students looking to study abroad continues to rise, the latest findings from Oxford International’s Student Global Mobility Index (SGMI) highlight a shift in what drives these decisions. Practical, hands-on learning and exposure to international environments have emerged as top motivators. According to the study, 30% of students chose overseas education for access to advanced practical studies, while 28% were influenced by the promise of a better future and global career opportunities.

While ambition runs high, the study also sheds light on the emotional and environmental challenges Indian students face when studying abroad. Weather conditions proved difficult for 26% of respondents, followed by homesickness (24%), cultural adjustment (21%), and accommodation issues (20%).

Conducted by Oxford International, the second edition of SGMI surveyed over 15099 current and prospective students from key regions across India. The research offers a holistic view of both the motivations and hurdles that shape Indian students’ global education journey, providing institutions and policymakers with valuable insights to better support this growing segment.

Commenting on the study and its findings, Mohit Gambir, Managing Director, Oxford International India, said, “Indian students today are driven by a desire to gain real-world skills and global exposure that go beyond pure academics. Our Student Global Mobility Index reflects this shift, while also highlighting the emotional and logistical challenges students face. Understanding these motivations and barriers is crucial for institutions looking to better support international students in their academic journey abroad.”

Other Key Findings from the study:

Gender-wise Insights

The top reason female students choose to study abroad is for advanced and practical studies (33%). For male students, both advanced/practical studies and the pursuit of a brighter future are equally important factors, each influencing 29% of their decisions. Among female students, 27% are motivated by the promise of a brighter future.

While 57% of students expressed concerns about studying abroad, a notable gender gap exists—67% of female students reported concerns compared to 51% of male students.

Concerns among students increase with age—from 66% at age 27 or older, to 62% (26 years), 58% (25 years), 53% (24 years), 51% (23 years), and 47% at age 22—while 57% of those aged 21 or younger also report concerns.

Male students’ top concerns include weather (29%), homesickness (21%), and accommodation (21%). Male students are nearly as concerned about food overseas (18%) as they are with homesickness and accommodation. Female students, in contrast, worry less about food (11%) but more about homesickness (27%).

Family influenced 44% of female students and 41% of male students in their decision to study abroad. Meanwhile, 41% of female and 39% of male students described themselves as self-motivated.

Region-wise Insights

Students from Central India show a stronger preference for short-term courses (16%) and top-ranked universities (18%). Students from Eastern India are particularly motivated by globalization, with 14% citing it as a key factor.

Students from Western India express more concerns than those from the South and North—36% worry about weather, 30% about culture, and 23% about food.

Students from Northern (44%) and Western India (42%) are most likely to make independent decisions about studying abroad.

In contrast, Family influence was notably stronger in Central India, where 52% of students cited it as a key factor in their decision to study abroad, followed by 44% in East India, both higher than the 35% – 44% range observed in other regions.

Students Across Delhi NCR Reimagine the Future with Samsung Solve for Tomorrow

GURUGRAM, India, June 25, 2025: Classrooms lit up with curiosity, corridors buzzed with conversations around innovation, and young students stood confidently pitching bold ideas for a better tomorrow. The recent Samsung Solve for Tomorrow roadshows and open houses have been igniting minds across cities, and Delhi NCR was no exception.

Delhi NCR SFT

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, launched on April 29, 2025, is more than just a national innovation challenge. It is a call to action for India’s youth — an invitation to step up, identify real-world issues, and build technology-based solutions that can impact lives. The programme equips students with design thinking tools, mentorship from Samsung leaders and IIT Delhi faculty, investor connects, and prototyping support. It also offers INR 1 crore to the top four winning teams.

As part of the outreach, the Samsung team visited Mamta Modern School in Vikaspuri, Kamal Model Sr. Sec. School in Mohan Garden, DAV Sector 14 in Gurgaon, St. Teressa School in Indirapuram, and WCTM Gurgaon. In these open houses, students interacted with programme facilitators, asked questions, explored case studies from previous seasons, and began shaping their own problem statements.

At the New Delhi leg of the roadshow, the excitement was palpable. Students from schools gathered with ideas ranging from AI-based solutions for senior citizen care to sustainable energy innovations and mental health apps tailored for teens.

Among them was Aarna Kaushal, a class 11 student, who has been deeply moved by the sight of overflowing landfills in her city. Inspired by the programme, she’s now working on a smart segregation system for waste collection. “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow made me feel like someone is finally listening to students like us. I’m not just dreaming anymore — I’m planning, researching and designing,” said Aarna.

For Bhumika Rawal, it was the experience of watching kids around her struggle with dyslexia that sparked an idea. “I want to create a voice-based learning app that helps kids learn at their own pace. The roadshow helped me shape that dream into a project,” said Bhumika, her eyes lit with determination.

The energy in these sessions went beyond pitches and prototypes. Students discussed the importance of inclusion, accessibility, climate responsibility, and rural connectivity. They learnt that ideas don’t have to be perfect to be powerful — they just need to be rooted in purpose.

As the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow roadshows continue to travel across India, they’re not just spreading awareness about the programme — they’re awakening a generation of problem-solvers and change-makers.

India is full of young innovators. Samsung is providing them the tools, the platform, and the confidence to build something meaningful.

With open houses like these, Samsung is doing more than scouting for the next big idea — it’s investing in the next generation of changemakers who believe that solving for tomorrow begins today.

Parents explore new-age parenting at Jasudben ML School’s interactive workshop

Mumbai, June 24, 2025: In a bid to strengthen the parent-school partnership and align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s vision of holistic development, Jasudben ML School (JML) launches JML-SPARK (School Parent Alliance for Raising Kids), a new space for dialogue, learning, and connection with the parent community. The inaugural talk, ‘Creating Safe Spaces for Our  Teens’, conducted by Piya Marker was organised exclusively for parents of students from Classes 6 to 8. It focused on promoting trust and emotional resilience between parents and their adolescent children.

The session was facilitated by Piya Marker, an educator with over 26 years of experience, a Master’s in Special Education, and an internationally certified parent coach. Speaking to a full house of engaged parents, she shed light on the evolving world of adolescents today. A world marked by social media, peer dynamics, academic pressure, shifting identities, and a constant need for validation. She helped parents explore how they can intentionally create safe spaces at home and in their relationship with their children by being more aware, responsive, and emotionally available.

Marker’s depth of understanding comes not only from her professional experience but also as the founding Principal of a school for children with learning disabilities. She shared, “Today’s adolescents face a world that’s easier in comfort but harder in complexity. As parents, we must be vigilant, compassionate, and willing to evolve to truly understand the shifting ground they stand on, their safety depends on it!”

The session went beyond general advice and offered concrete strategies for building trust and open communication, such as active listening, setting boundaries with empathy, acknowledging adolescent stressors, and reframing parental responses in challenging moments, among others.

Principal Shilpa Gandhi remarked, “Parenting today comes with new-age challenges. At Jasudben ML School, we believe education cannot be limited to the classroom. It must also include equipping our families to understand the emotional lives of children. Mrs. Marker’s session gave our parents not just insight, but confidence. Because when school and home come together, the child thrives, not just academically, but as a whole person.”

Through the JML-SPARK initiative, the school aims to prioritise emotional intelligence, safe school-home dialogue, and holistic child development, core pillars of NEP 2020. The school recognises that academic success is deeply tied to emotional safety, and that parenting, much like education, must evolve with time.
