Vicki Bisbee’s New Book Assiniboine Nakoda Book of Basic Words

Wolf Point, MT, April 08, 2024 -Fulton Books author Vicki Bisbee, a retired school counselor, has completed her most recent book, “Assiniboine (Nakoda): Book of Basic Words”: an educational guide meant for readers of all ages to help them learn basic words and pronunciations of the Assiniboine language.

Born and raised on the Fort Peck, Indian reservation, author Vicki Bisbee attended MSU-Northern, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business education and a master’s degree in education – guidance and counseling. Both of Vicki’s parents attended boarding schools and her mother is Chippewa from the Turtle Mountain Reservation in ND and her dad is Assiniboine. There was no Native American culture taught in school but much of that had changed when Vicki returned to the reservation in 1992. In 1996, Vicki enrolled in Native American Studies at Fort Peck Community College and began her journey by participating in her first Medicine Lodge in 1997, which finished in June 2000.

“Great efforts are being made to revitalize the Assiniboine language on the Fort Peck Reservation and areas where Assiniboins reside,” writes Vicki. “The Fort Peck Community College on the Reservation has been instrumental in teaching the Assiniboine culture and rich language. This book is a brief guide of basic words and pronunciation.”

Author D.D. Darwin’s New Book Life’s Little Mysteries

Still, for all that, the single most striking feature was his sparkling pale-blue eyes that were accented by his chestnut-brown skin. One more thing, somewhere, somehow from the time we had left his home several hours before, a metaphysical change had taken place. Years appeared to drop from his appearance. No longer was he an old man but a man filled with vitality, boundless strength, and as I was to find out, incredible endurance.”

The Frederick Turner Prize committee does not confine itself in its search for excellence to free verse poetry, but seeks to recognize the many shaped, sung, and crafted forms of poetry that have arisen independently in human cultures all over the world. Its chief criterion is beauty, and it reflects its namesake’s interest in a philosophy of esthetics that includes the evolution of the cosmos. The prize includes a personalized medal, a diploma, and an award of $1,000.

Richard Harteis’s Latest Collection of Poetry

New London, CT, April 08, 2024 –If a crumb falls from a table, it falls to the earth because of gravity. In space, there is no gravity, and a crumb becomes a kind of dangerous missile, a drop of water, or a tear, a fountainhead. Gravity is a function of time the poet tells us; in space there is no time.

So it is with these “crumbs,” written after too much sativa, mindful observations of the particulars of life, hence the title of Harteis’s new book, “CRUMBS.”

In his book letters to a young poet, Rilke says that everything will become easier, “if you trust in Nature, and what is simple in Nature in the small things that hardly anyone sees, and that can so suddenly become huge, immeasurable, if you have this love for what is humble, and try very simply as someone who serves to win the confidence of what seems poor.” And Richard Wilbur has described how fruitful an aesthetic is that focuses on things. “Nothing but in things,” the bard from New Jersey reminds us.

In his book, the Power of Now, and later in The New Earth, Eckhart Tolle tells us that the goal is look at reality with full attention, full consciousness. And so these small crumbs.

In legend one leaves crumbs by the wayside to find our way back home. What happens if a bird or some creature eats the crumbs we have carefully left to guide us? Are we lost? It is in placing the crumbs that matters. Paying attention to our life, marking the moments that have caused us to stop and make sense of what has just happened. Only an exercise in observation perhaps, but fruitful one hopes, or at least pleasurable for a reader: getting to know another human being in language. All art is an attempt to overcome our physical limitations, to transcend ourselves, and greet another with love.

Author Wesley Stein’s New Book, New Beginnings

Elwood City, PA, April 06, 2024 –Wesley Stein has completed his new book, “New Beginnings”: a coming-of-age story that follows along as Xander starts to be able to do things he has never been able to do before that are not even possible. On top of that, a handful of kids in his school start to experience the same thing, including the mysterious new girl.

Growing up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania made author Wesley Stein much of who he is today. The tight-knit community fueled his imagination and inspired much of his writing. He has always loved being in nature and sitting outside. Listening to birds helped him in his writing. Music has had a significant impact on Wesley’s life. Someone in his house is always singing or playing an instrument, himself included. Past classmates and other people whom he has met in life have been an influence on his novel; some of them even inspired select characters. Wesley hopes to continue following his creative spirit in future novels he will write someday.

Wesley writes, “The orphanage in which she is currently living is in agreement with the US Military. They started this program in which once you turn sixteen, the government will adopt you per se and train you in multiple aspects of the military—how to hold a gun, how to hold your own in a fight, and which wire to cut. Once eighteen, you can join whichever aspect of the military you want; and two years later, they will pay for college if you so wish. It is a nice program, and a lot of kids who haven’t been adopted take up the offer. But she is not like most kids.”

TMSA Student Placed Second in the Technology Division in NC Science Fair

Cary, NC, April 04, 2024 –TMSA Cary student Diana Zavadskaia competed at the NC State Fair under Junior Division and won second place in the technology division.

Her project focuses on artificial hearts. The project shows the process of designing and actual 3D printing of an original artificial heart, as well as an experiment that puts the invention to test. She became interested in this topic right when they started the anatomy unit dedicated to hearts in school. Since then, she has been studying independently and began focusing on artificial hearts. This was her first year of competition above the school level.

There is also a chance to be promoted to the national level and travel to a different state where the students from all the US will spend a week talking about research and presenting their projects.

Diana said, “It amazed me that something so essential can be replaced. I hope one day my research and inventions can be used in the medical field.”
