We hope this partnership empowers researchers and participants alike, fostering collaboration and fueling discoveries that will transform the lives of people living with ALS, their families, and their communities. We are excited to continue deepening our collaboration with ALS TDI and hope this marks the beginning of a revolution in ALS research.”
Data privacy and security remain top priorities in this collaboration. Both ALS TDI and Unite Genomics adhere to strict privacy measures, ensuring that participants’ data is de-identified and securely managed throughout the research process. In addition, all ARC participants will have complete control over whether they would like to participate in the EHR import feature of the ARC portal and will also be able to specify what specific information they choose to import and share.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in ALS TDI’s research – one that could help researchers reveal new insights into the disease, accelerate discoveries, and ultimately make a tangible difference in the lives of people with ALS.
Paul Wicks, PhD, an ALS researcher, caregiver, and community advocate, recognizes the need for, and the great potential of this integration, commenting that, “Over the past decade the ALS community has demanded that their data be put to good use in order to accelerate research and advance new therapies. Many families I’ve spoken to over the years were frustrated that their electronic medical records were inaccessible to researchers. It looks like the ALS TDI ARC/Unite partnership is closing that gap. I’m hopeful that the surveys, wearables, and biospecimens health data already captured by ARC will be bolstered by the data carefully entered by the care team in clinical records.”

Effective Tips for Chronic Pain Management

Dr. J V Srinivas, Lead Consultant – Orthopedics & Joint Surgery, Aster RV Hospital
What Is Chronic Pain
Acute pain can occur for a short while after injury but tends to disappear after the healing is complete. Typical solutions such as pain relief gel or pain relief patches are enough to support healing. Chronic pain, on the other hand, continues to last for a longer time. In some cases, it is not related to any injury but can develop on its own.
Pain that lasts for longer than three months is considered to be chronic pain. People may experience bouts of pain daily or have a slight pain sensation at all times. Living with such pain can not only impact one’s physical life but also one’s social and emotional life. This necessitates the need for better pain relief options.
Globally, it has been estimated that 1 in 5 adults suffer from pain and that another 1 in 10 adults are diagnosed with chronic pain each year.1 For people suffering from chronic pain, correct treatment is important. The best orthopedic doctor in Bangalore can help your case by either identifying the cause (if any) or providing you with safe pain relief tablets and other helpful treatments.
Common Symptoms of Chronic Pain
Chronic pain can manifest in numerous ways. Depending on the type and area of pain, it may range from mild to severe and show up in the following ways:
· Shooting pains
· Muscle aches
· Joint pains
· Burning or tingling sensations
· Aches
· Electrical or stinging pains
· Stiffness or tightness in the area
· Throbbing pain
Living with these symptoms daily can further lead to other symptoms such as depression, anxiety, restricted movement, fatigue, and insomnia, among others. The most common types of chronic pain are back pain, neck pain, headaches, joint pain, and nerve-related pain.
Chronic Pain Management
In case of an underlying condition, your orthopedic doctor will first try and treat that. However, chronic pain does not always have a clear cause. In such instances, pain relief can be achieved through proper management. Some of the approaches used for pain management include:
Medications
These may include a range of pain relief tablets such as muscle relaxers, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), topical products including pain relief gel and pain relief patches, corticosteroids in the form of pills or injections, and others. Only take the medicines given by your orthopedic in the recommended dosage to avoid unwanted side effects.
Physical Therapy
Certain forms of persistent pain may benefit from physical therapy. This usually includes a mix of stretching and body manipulation exercises that can help with pain. Physical therapy is widely used for back pain relief and may be suggested by your doctor.
Exercise
Low-intensity exercises can work wonders for people with pain. The release of endorphins along with improved blood circulation and overall health can help alleviate or reduce pain. Be sure to consult your doctor as to which exercises are safe for you and which to avoid. Avoid exerting yourself but instead focus on gentle forms of exercise such as walking, swimming, or yoga.
Stress Relief
Stress can be a major contributor to pain. Consequently, living with chronic pain can worsen stress leading to a vicious cycle. Reducing stress through meditation, walks in nature, deep breathing exercises, therapy, etc. can work wonders in pain relief. Certain techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation can also help relax stiff muscles.
Diet
Diet has a direct role to play in pain and inflammation. A healthy diet for weight loss may further be required for back pain relief or pain in the legs. Additionally, cutting back on inflammatory foods such as sugar, salt, red meat, and other processed food may be recommended to mitigate pain. Alcohol can also worsen pain so reducing alcohol or quitting it completely, based on your situation, can help.
Living with chronic pain can be challenging as it can interfere with a lot of daily tasks. Timely treatment is important to effectively manage pain. Along with orthopedic approaches discussed above, you may also benefit from therapy to support your mental health which can further have an impact on pain. Discuss possible treatment and lifestyle options with the best orthopedic doctor in Bangalore to manage the pain better.

Rutgers Plays Host to 10th Annual Leadership Academy for Teens with Tourette Syndrome

Somerville, NJ, August 04, 2023 — High school students will learn about advocacy, self-leadership, and resilience from professionals and mentors as NJ Center for Tourette Syndrome and Associated Disorders (NJCTS) conducts their tenth Tim Howard Leadership Academy, August 3 to 6, on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ.
Created in 2014 in partnership with former professional soccer player, current broadcaster, and Tourette Syndrome (TS) advocate, Tim Howard, the Academy is the only leadership program for teens diagnosed with TS in the nation. The 19 teens participating this year will represent seven states and Canada.
TS is a neurobiological disorder characterized by uncontrollable movements and sounds known as tics. As many as 1 in 50 school-aged children show signs of TS or other tic disorders, which are frequently accompanied by other mental health disorders including ADHD, OCD, and anxiety.
According to a survey conducted by the Tourette Association of America in 2022, 80% of students with TS felt that their tics negatively affected their school experience, 70% had experienced bullying due to their disorder, and 38% worry about being socially isolated.
Over the course of their four days on campus, when the participants are not interacting with doctors, psychologists, and other experts in the field to learn more about their TS, they will have the opportunity to form connections with new friends through small group activities or friendly games of kickball in the quad.
“The goal of the Academy is to have the teens leave with the ability to advocate for themselves and be ready to face an often misinformed public,” explained Academy Director Melissa Fowler. “With the lessons and skills they gain, and the goals they’ll set for themselves, this Academy class will step up to be the voice of awareness in their own communities. It will also give them a network of friends and professionals to help them on their journey.”
NJCTS is a not-for-profit organization committed to the advocacy of individuals and families affected by Tourette Syndrome and its associated disorders. Dedicated to delivering high quality services, the Center recognizes the importance of educating the public, medical professionals, and teachers about this disorder through programs and affiliations with schools, health centers, and the community.

Apollo Hospitals in Bengaluru successfully removed a 7.0+ cm kidney stone from a patient with “Moses technology” (Moses2.0)
Bengaluru, July 29, 2023: Doctors at Apollo Hospitals in Seshadripuram, Bengaluru, successfully removed a 7.2 cm kidney stone using an innovative new minimally invasive Holmium laser with ‘Moses Technology (Moses2.0). According to doctors at Apollo Hospitals, it is the most unusual case in which a large kidney stone has been removed using RIRS and Moses technology.
The patient, a 65 + year-old lady, used to have recurrent flank pain for 1 year, and on evaluation, she was found to have large kidney stones measuring 7.0 + cm, producing a staghorn pattern calculus. Her case was a challenging one, as she had four other co-morbid conditions like Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, hypertension, and a cardiac condition with a post TAVI procedure (cardiac procedure) and was on blood thinners (Antiplatelet agents: ecosprin and clopilet). Her condition was challenging in that the stone was large (occupying 2/3 of the kidney and upper ureter) and associated with comorbidity as mentioned above, and moreover, the patient was taking blood thinners (which makes the invasive surgery next to impossible).
Dr. T. Manohar, Chief Urologist & Transplant surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Seshadripuram said, “We took up this challenging case at our hospital and promised her a ray of hope. With our team and technical experts, we have decided to go ahead with the procedure using the new Moses 2.0 technology. The huge kidney stone was cleared with only minimal incisions and minimal blood loss. The patient is doing well after the operation and is on the path to recovery.”
The currently available treatment for such large stones is PCNL (where the kidney is punctured and stones are removed through 2-3 holes), which might lead to severe bleeding and incomplete clearance. She was advised to undergo conservative management by several other specialists. Also, it requires multiple staged procedures if done via conventional methods. On seeing the success rates and benefits of “Moses technology” (Moses 2.0), Dr. T. Manohar added, “The new stone age era has arrived for Uro Sciences.”
Speaking on the success of this urology case, Mr. Uday Davda, COO, Apollo Hospitals, Seshadripuram, said, “The doctors at Apollo Hospitals, Seshadripuram, Bengaluru, have been at the forefront in using advanced technologies in medical science. Till date, we have successfully removed more than 1200 kidney stones, and among them, more than 500 were large kidney stones, varying in size from 2.5 cm to 6.2 cm. This large stone (7.0 + cm) is treated by RIRS and Moses technology.”

The Impact of Technology on Sports Mat Safety and Injury Prevention
By Paras Maheshwari, Director, Gravolite
In recent years, technology has revolutionized various aspects of our lives, and the world of sports is no exception. One crucial area where technology has made a significant impact is sports mat safety and injury prevention. No doubt, technology has improved the safety of sports mats, reduced the risk of injuries, and enhanced athlete performance. By examining advancements such as sensor technology, impact-absorbing materials, and real-time feedback systems, we can gain a deeper understanding of how technology has transformed the landscape of sports mat safety.
Understanding Sensor Technology and Data Analysis:
One of the most significant advancements in sports mat safety is the integration of sensor technology. Sensors embedded within the mats can detect impact forces, athlete movements, and landing mechanics. This data can be analyzed in real-time, providing valuable insights into an athlete’s performance and injury risk. By tracking metrics like force distribution, angle of impact, and joint alignment, coaches and sports scientists can identify potential hazards and correct technique flaws before they lead to injuries.
Furthermore, the collected data allows for personalized injury prevention strategies. Athletes can receive detailed feedback on their landings, ensuring proper technique and reducing the risk of trauma. Additionally, by analyzing the data across multiple athletes, trends and patterns can be identified, leading to the development of new training protocols and injury prevention strategies.
Impact-Absorbing Materials:
Another critical aspect of sports mat safety is using advanced impact-absorbing materials. Traditional mats often lacked the ability to adequately absorb and distribute impact forces, resulting in an increased risk of injuries. However, with the advent of new materials, such as high-density foam and innovative gel-based substances, sports mats can now provide superior shock absorption capabilities, which is especially helpful in combat sports like Wrestling, Judo, etc.
These materials possess unique properties that dissipate impact forces, reducing stress on an athlete’s joints and muscles during landings. Additionally, they offer enhanced stability, reducing the likelihood of slips and falls. By minimizing the impact forces exerted on athletes’ bodies, these innovative materials play a vital role in preventing acute injuries, such as fractures and sprains.
Real-Time Feedback Systems:
Real-time feedback systems have become increasingly prevalent in sports mat safety and injury prevention. These systems utilize advanced technologies, such as video analysis software and motion tracking sensors, to provide instant feedback to athletes and coaches during training sessions.
By capturing an athlete’s movements and analyzing them in real time, coaches can identify potential injury risks, incorrect techniques, or imbalances. This immediate feedback allows for prompt corrections and adjustments, minimizing the chances of repetitive stress injuries and promoting safer movement patterns.
Furthermore, real-time feedback systems enable athletes to visualize their performance metrics and track their progress over time. By seeing their improvement firsthand, athletes are motivated to refine their techniques and reduce the risk of injuries, ultimately enhancing their overall performance.
There are many talented athletes in the world, but talent is not enough. The ability to constantly push your boundaries and break new benchmarks makes a good athlete. And in this case technology can help to understand one’s progress and create better infrastructure facilities to be on that path of continuous improvement. By providing valuable data insights, advanced materials, and instant feedback, technology has transformed the way athletes train, ensuring safer and more efficient performance on the sports mat. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect further advancements that will push the boundaries of sports mat safety, making sports participation safer and more enjoyable for athletes of all levels.
