Timely Thrombectomy Saves 32-Year-Old from Stroke at Wockhardt Hospitals

Mumbai – A 32-year-old woman, Mrs. Anuradha Shinde (name changed), experienced a life-threatening ischemic stroke during a routine health check-up, highlighting the underappreciated risks of dehydration and prolonged fasting. Mrs. Shinde, in good general health, had been fasting overnight for approximately 12 hours in preparation for a routine annual health check-up. During this period, she also abstained from drinking water. After her early morning blood tests at a diagnostic center, she entered the washroom to provide a urine sample but did not emerge for over 30 minutes. Concerned staff eventually found her inside the washroom with signs of acute neurological distress, specifically, weakness on the left side of her body.

Dr. Pavan Pai

She was rushed for immediate medical attention. An MRI of the brain revealed that she had suffered an ischemic stroke, affecting the right hemisphere of her brain. She was promptly administered a thrombolytic (clot-busting) injection in an effort to restore blood flow. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly. A follow-up MR angiography showed a complete occlusion of the right internal carotid artery (ICA), the major vessel supplying blood to the brain.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, she was transferred to Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road where a team led by senior neuro-interventionist Dr. Pavan Pai performed a mechanical thrombectomy—an advanced minimally invasive procedure used to remove the clot directly from the artery.

“This case was a stark reminder that even young individuals without prior health conditions can suffer serious strokes under specific circumstances like dehydration,” said Dr. Pavan Pai, Consultant Interventional Neurologist & Stroke Specialist in Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road “When a person is dehydrated, blood becomes more viscous, or thicker, and this can severely impact circulation. In people who may already have some level of narrowing in their blood vessels, the risk of clot formation and blockage rises dramatically. Mrs. Shinde’s quick transfer and the rapid intervention with mechanical thrombectomy were critical to saving her life and preventing permanent disability.”

Following the procedure, Mrs. Shinde was placed on a comprehensive neurorehabilitation program, which included physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Over the course of three months, she made a remarkable recovery. Today, she has regained full function and is back to work, living independently and without deficits.

This case underscores the importance of awareness around the potential dangers of extended fasting and dehydration, even in the context of routine medical procedures. While fasting is commonly practiced for blood tests, individuals—especially women and those with known or suspected vascular issues—should be advised to stay well-hydrated unless specifically instructed by a doctor. When you’re dehydrated, your blood becomes thicker, making it harder to circulate through the body. If you already have a narrowed or partially blocked blood vessel, dehydration adds stress to your system and significantly raises your risk of stroke.

Dr. Pavan Pai further emphasized the importance of timely diagnosis and intervention: “Stroke is a medical emergency where every second counts. Rapid imaging and treatment can mean the difference between full recovery and lifelong disability. Public awareness and preparedness are essential.”

Key Takeaways:
• Always stay adequately hydrated before routine fasting blood tests unless otherwise instructed.
• Be alert to warning signs of stroke: sudden weakness, difficulty speaking, facial droop, or loss of coordination.
• Seek immediate medical help at the first sign of neurological symptoms—timely action saves lives.
World Stroke Thrombectomy Day was established in 2021 to support Mission Thrombectomy’s campaign to bring awareness to the benefits of stroke treatment intervention, and the need for access to such treatments, specifically in low- and middle-income countries. This day is recognized each year on May 15th, but the work to secure global access happens every day.

Sakhi gets entangled in a hit-and-run case in Sony SAB’s Wagle Ki Duniya

In the upcoming episodes, Sakhi (Chinmayee Salvi) finds herself in a distressing situation when a street urchin suddenly runs in front of her car, resulting in an accident that leaves her shaken. The child is rushed to the hospital, but a video of the accident goes viral and the boy’s mother files a police complaint against Sakhi.

In the upcoming episodes, the Wagles rush to support Sakhi as the police allege that she jumped a signal during the incident. Sakhi is charged with a hit-and-run case, and the authorities arrive to arrest her. While the family discusses the situation with the injured boy’s parents, Sakhi sincerely offers to cover all medical expenses and asks if there’s anything more she can do to help. What follows leaves everyone stunned — the parents request Sakhi to become a surrogate mother for their child, revealing that they’ve been trying unsuccessfully to have another baby for years and promising to drop the case if she agrees. The entire Wagle family is shocked by this unexpected and drastic demand. Meanwhile, Atharva (Sheehan Kapahi) uses his sharp instincts to analyze the viral video from every angle, hoping to uncover the truth about what actually happened.

Will Atharva’s findings come in time to save Sakhi, or will she be forced to consider the unimaginable?

Sumeet Raghvan, who essays the role of Rajesh Wagle, said, “As a father, Rajesh is naturally very particular about his kids’ safety, especially when it comes to things like driving. So when this accident happens, his first instinct is worry and disbelief. Somewhere deep down, he knows Sakhi isn’t someone who would be careless like that, but when the police and the evidence suggest otherwise, it really shakes him. Both Rajesh and Vandana are devastated about the little boy getting hurt and they do everything they can to ensure he’s taken care of in the hospital But at the same time, they’re trying to understand what really happened, and how to keep Sakhi from being pulled into such a serious allegation.”

Actors Reflect on the Values Instilled While Growing Up in Joint Families

Joint families are more than just a household. They are a way of life that fosters shared values, deep bonds, and lifelong memories. From learning the art of compromise to finding strength in unity, growing up in such close-knit families teaches lessons that shape who we become. On International Family Day, &TV artists reflect on the deep-rooted values instilled in them while being raised in joint families. These include Smita Sable (Dhaniya, Bheema), Sonal Panwar (Malaika, Happu Ki Ultan Paltan), and Vidisha Srivastava (Anita Bhabhi, Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai). Smita Sable, aka Dhaniya from Bheema, shares, “Growing up in a joint family of twelve taught me the true meaning of unity and sharing. Our mealtimes were split into two rounds because we could not all fit at the table together, but those meals were the heart of our day. They were filled with laughter, stories, and a sense of belonging. That environment taught me how important it is to relate to those around you. Even today, on the sets of Bheema, I make sure to eat with my co-actors. We laugh, we bond, and it feels just like home. I firmly believe that togetherness strengthens every bond and that’s a value I carry with me wherever I go.”

Sonal Panwar, aka Malaika from Happu Ki Ultan Paltan, adds, “Life in a joint family was my first school of values. My cousins were my best friends; we played, fought, and celebrated every moment together. Whether it was playing cricket in the lanes or sleeping under the stars during power cuts, those moments taught me that joy multiplies when shared. Even now, that sense of belonging drives me. In Mumbai, I have found friends who feel like family, and I am always available for them. On set, too, we play games and look out for each other. Being raised in a joint family taught me how to nurture relationships, and that’s a lesson for life.” Vidisha Srivastava, aka Anita Bhabhi from Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai, reflects, “Joint family life gave me a foundation of unconditional support. Sure, we fought over things like the TV remote or who got the last snack, but when it came to being there for one another, we stood as one. That experience taught me to be a dependable presence for the people I love. Today, I apply those values in every relationship, be it family, friends, or colleagues. If someone close to me needs help or support, I show up, no questions asked. That spirit of solidarity, loyalty, and love is the legacy of my joint family upbringing.”

Watch Bheema at 8:30 PM, Happu Ki Ultan Paltan at 10:00 PM, and Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai at 10:30 PM—Monday to Friday, only on &TV!

Human library event at Stonehill Lit Fest 2025 – Books have voices too

15th May, 2025: In an inspiring initiative to foster empathy, dialogue, and deeper understanding, Stonehill International School organised a ‘Human Library’ as part of its annual Literature Festival – Stonehill Lit Fest 2025 that was a week-long celebration of books, literature and storytelling.

Drawing from a movement that started in 2000 at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark – The Human Library Organization, the Human Library in Stonehill invited staff members to become ‘human books’ sharing their personal stories with students in small group settings, aligning with the theme of the Lit Fest  – ‘I am a Story. You are a Story. We are a Story’.

This experience nurtured open-mindedness, communication skills, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for the diverse journeys that shape who we are, among students.

The event provided students with a rare opportunity to engage directly with the lived experiences of teachers and staff — from tales of overcoming adversity and navigating cultural shifts, to humorous anecdotes and reflections on life’s unexpected turns; from adopting an abandoned pet to being a motorbike enthusiast!

Each of the 12 sessions every day allowed students to ‘borrow’ one human book based on their interest.  Students asked questions, and learned not just through facts, but through feelings and firsthand accounts.

The event highlighted the power of storytelling as a bridge across generations and backgrounds. Aayaan (Grade III), said, “I liked the Human Library book which spoke about us being ourselves and overcoming our fear”.

What turned out to be one of the most impactful events of the Human Library, was the inclusion of the school’s support staff such as drivers and gardeners as storytellers. To bring out the richness of their experiences, the personal accounts were translated, allowing students to access stories in multiple languages. This emphasized not only inclusivity but also the value of communication beyond linguistic boundaries.

Vijay Kumar, a support staff at Stonehill, narrated his journey from being a farmer to becoming a gardener at the school. “I truly enjoyed telling my story to students. From farming to working at Stonehill, every step has taught me something valuable. I feel proud and happy to be where I am today,” he said.

“I learnt what the Support staff do when they are here in school. I liked how the support staff had a chance to express themselves about how they feel. We often don’t see the support staff and without them the school wouldn’t be able to function,” said Jonathan (Grade III).
