Record Voter Turnout in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu; CEC Hails Historic Participation

Apr 24 (BNP): The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, has lauded the voters of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu for recording the highest-ever voter turnout since Independence, describing it as a historic milestone in India’s democratic journey.

According to the Election Commission of India, Tamil Nadu registered an impressive voter turnout of 84.69%, while West Bengal (Phase I) recorded a remarkable 91.78%. Both figures surpass previous records set in 2011, when Tamil Nadu had recorded 78.29% and West Bengal 84.72%.

Commending the electorate, the CEC said the unprecedented participation reflects rising voter awareness, strong faith in the electoral system, and a deep commitment to democratic values. “This is the highest-ever polling percentage since Independence. We salute every voter in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu,” he stated.

The polling process was closely monitored through 100% live webcasting across all polling stations in both states. The CEC, along with Election Commissioners Dr. S. S. Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, maintained continuous oversight to ensure transparency and the smooth conduct of polling.

Special arrangements were made for Persons with Disabilities (PwD), including the provision of wheelchairs, volunteer assistance, and transportation to polling stations, ensuring inclusive participation.

The Election Commission also commended polling personnel, security forces, and administrative officials for conducting the elections in a peaceful, free, and fair manner.

The record turnout is being widely seen as a strong indicator of growing civic engagement and the continued strengthening of democratic processes in the country.

Apr 24: Kerala Grameena Bank (KGB), sponsored by Canara Bank has unveiled an ambitious strategic roadmap for the financial year 2026–27, setting a target to achieve ₹1 lakh crore in total business. McMaster-Built AI Speeds Up Drug Discovery, Designs New Antibiotic in Early Tests

Researchers at McMaster University have developed a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of drastically speeding up drug discovery and, in early tests, it has already designed a brand-new antibiotic.

The discovery is a demonstration of how AI could dramatically improve the slow and costly search for new antimicrobial medicines, as bacteria and other microbes continue to evolve resistance to our current suite of drugs.

The new model, called SyntheMol-RL, is trained to explore a vast chemical space of up to 46 billion possible compounds  far beyond what could realistically be tested in the lab, where even large-scale screens top out at around a million molecules. Drawing on roughly 150,000 molecular ‘building blocks’ and a set of 50 chemical synthesis reactions, the AI model is designed to generate structurally novel antibiotic candidates.

“In the lab, we can build chemical compounds using a set of smaller chemical fragments, which can be stuck together like molecular Lego blocks,” says Assistant Professor Jon Stokes, whose laboratory developed the new model. “SyntheMol-RL configures those fragments in different ways, faster than humans ever could, to create new, larger chemical compounds that should  based on its knowledge  be antibacterial.”

Stokes, a member of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research, says that while generative AI is becoming increasingly effective at designing novel antibiotic candidates, key properties that determine a potential drug’s clinical viability remain difficult to assess without extensive  and expensive — laboratory testing.

“It doesn’t matter if you find a new chemical that’s antibacterial in the lab if it can’t dissolve inside the body, if it’s toxic to human cells, or if it can’t be metabolized and expelled after it has done its job,” he explains. “Bleach is antibacterial  so is fire. But they obviously don’t tick those other boxes. Good drug candidates must meet several different criteria, otherwise they’ll never become actual medicine.”

Past iterations of SyntheMol exclusively designed molecules with antibacterial activity, without consideration for these other critical properties. But, over the past two years, Stokes’ team  with collaborators at Stanford University  has refined the model so it only generates antibacterial compounds that are easy to develop in the lab and likely to be soluble in the body.

“There is a lot of conflict between compounds that are antibacterial and compounds that are water soluble,” says Gary Liu, a graduate student in Stokes’ lab and lead developer of the new model. “In previous studies, filtering for compounds that were both antibacterial and soluble after our prompt often left us with significantly fewer viable drug candidates, so we built solubility right into the generation process and now the model can efficiently design antibiotic candidates with greater clinical promise.”

In a new study, published April 23 and selected for the cover of the June issue of Molecular Systems Biology, Stokes’ team put their enhanced model to the test. They tasked it with generating water-soluble antibiotics that could treat infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus  colloquially known as “staph infections”  and quickly got several hits.

From a batch of 79 model-proposed antibacterials, Stokes’ group homed in on one particularly interesting compound  a novel, water-soluble compound that seemed likely to have antibiotic activity against S. aureus.

The new computer-designed drug candidate, which they called synthecin, was then formulated as a topical cream in the lab and tested on an otherwise drug-resistant wound infection in mouse models.

“Synthecin was highly effective at controlling the infection,” says Denise Catacutan, a grad student in Stokes’ lab who led the wet lab portions of the study. “It worked extremely well as a topical drug, and also shows early promise as something that could be applied or optimized for systemic use in the future.” 

While the new study highlights synthecin’s promise, the team has yet to uncover how the drug inhibits bacteria  a key step, Stokes says, in determining its safety profile and therefore its likelihood of someday landing in clinics. His group is now actively engaged in these critical “mechanism-of-action” studies.

Regardless of how those studies play out, though, the group sees the discovery of synthecin as validation that their AI model can rapidly generate high-potential drug candidates, shifting the burden of drug discovery from finding viable compounds to designing and optimizing them.

That shift, Stokes says, is significant not only for antibiotic discovery, but also for all areas of biochemistry.

“We used our model to design new antibiotics, but it’s capable of so much more,” says Stokes, a faculty member at the Marnix E. Heersink School of Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship and an executive member of NexusHealth. “We built it to be disease agnostic, meaning it could just as easily generate novel drug candidates for diabetes or cancer or other indications.”

Stokes’ lab continues to enhance SyntheMol and anticipates that an even more robust version will be available later this year.

The Symposium aimed to bring together leading experts, scientists, academicians, and industry stakeholders to discuss recent advancements in quantum technologies, including quantum computing, communication, sensing, and materials.

Highlighting the significance of Quantum Science & Technology, Dr. Poornendo Chaturvedi, Scientist G, DRDO, averred, “Quantum Technology is extremely crucial in today’s scenario. It includes principles like superposition, entanglement, and interference to create capabilities which are impossible for classical systems. The first Quantum Revolution took place in 1940s which included transistors, semiconductors, lasers, solar cells, etc and the second revolution is taking place now which includes Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing and Quantum Materials, resulting in a paradigm shift in computation, communications, sensing and device technology. The reason for a sudden Quantum boom is technological advancement and use of Quantum technology in various areas such as Drug Discovery, Logistics & Supply Chain Optimisation, Climate Modelling and Weather Prediction, and many others. Under the National Quantum Mission, the government is actively investing in quantum R&D, infrastructure and ecosystem building. Quantum Technology has also been included in AICTE Curriculum and UG & PG curricula in Quantum Technology have been launched to build India’s quantum-ready talent across institutions. C-DOT is keen on partnering with academia and industry to build, secure and advance India’s Quantum Future.”

Stressing upon the need for “Quantum Accelerators for enabling Quantum Computing on Supercomputers”, Dr. Abhishek Tiwari, Associate Director, Scientist F, C-DAC Noida, asserted, “There is a need for Quantum Accelerator since classical computers are not able to solve the problems at a fast rate. Physical quantum computers are expensive, error-prone and limited and our country lacks the indigenous access to quantum hardware for researchers and students. Texas Children’s Researcher Awarded $6.7 Million NIH Grant to Accelerate Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery and Advance New Therapies

HOUSTON (April 23, 2026) – Dr. Damian Young, investigator at Texas Children’s Duncan Neurological Research Institute (Duncan NRI) and director of the Center for Drug Discovery at Baylor College of Medicine, along with collaborators, has been awarded a $6.7 million grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to develop new approaches to rapidly identify potential treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias with the goal of accelerating the discovery of new therapies. 

While Alzheimer’s is often associated with aging, researchers at Texas Children’s are uniquely positioned to study it. By examining how the brain develops and functions early in life, scientists can better understand how those same systems break down over time—revealing new opportunities to prevent and treat neurodegenerative disease.

Texas Children’s Researcher Awarded $6.7 Million NIH Grant to Accelerate Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery and Advance New Therapies

This five-year project brings together experts in chemistry, artificial intelligence and translational science to tackle one of the most complex challenges in Alzheimer’s research—quickly identifying therapies that are both safe and effective.

“This grant will enable the most expansive screening effort to date for compounds targeting Alzheimer’s disease,” Dr. Young said. “By integrating cutting-edge biological insights from Alzheimer’s disease research worldwide with a highly innovative chemistry and machine learning platform, we aim to unlock new opportunities for discovery. This work will represent the first critical step toward developing transformative therapies for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.”

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias affect millions of people worldwide, yet developing new treatments remains a slow and complex process. One of the biggest challenges is identifying which molecules can successfully target the biological drivers of disease and reach the brain in a safe and effective way.

To address this, Dr. Young’s team will use DNA-encoded chemical libraries, a technology that allows researchers to screen hundreds of millions of potential drug compounds at once. Each compound carries a unique DNA “barcode,” enabling scientists to quickly identify which molecules interact with proteins linked to Alzheimer’s.

The team will then use artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze the data and predict which compounds are most likely to succeed—significantly reducing the time from early discovery to viable drug candidates. Ultimately, this approach is designed to shorten the timeline for identifying new treatments—bringing potential therapies to patients faster and with greater precision.

The project will move through multiple phases, starting with large-scale screening and advancing to refining the most promising compounds to improve their strength, safety and ability to reach the brain. Researchers will also explore whether existing drugs can be repurposed, potentially accelerating the path to clinical testing.

A key component of the project is its open science approach. Data and compounds generated—including results from screening more than 900 million unique compounds—will be shared publicly, enabling researchers worldwide to build on the findings and advance new treatments. An internal advisory board of Texas Children’s and Baylor faculty consisting of Drs. Huda ZoghbiJoshua ShulmanHugo Bellen, and Juan Botas will provide critical expertise in prioritizing protein targets most strongly implicated in Alzheimer’s disease.

The work will be supported in part through collaboration with the Structural Genomics Consortium, which will provide critical protein targets needed for the research.

This research reflects Texas Children’s commitment to solving the unsolvable by advancing innovative, collaborative approaches to complex neurological diseases. Insights gained from pediatric research often inform adult treatments, and discoveries in adult disease can in turn accelerate breakthroughs in children’s health. By bridging these areas, researchers at the Duncan NRI are helping drive progress across the full spectrum of neurological disease, with the goal of improving outcomes for patients of all ages. For patients and families affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias, this work represents a critical step toward earlier detection, more effective treatments and ultimately, prevention.
