Don’t Let Arthritis Take Over: Smart Ways to Fight Joint Pain
INDIA, 16 septembder 2025: Everyday movements, like climbing stairs or squatting, are often accompanied by a nagging stiffness that many brushes off as ageing. But such persistent joint discomfort is not something to ignore. In India, where daily routines often involve activities like squatting during household chores or prolonged standing in bustling markets, joint pain has become a common concern affecting people across age groups. Arthritis, an umbrella term for conditions causing inflammation in the joints, can disrupt mobility and quality of life if left unaddressed. With rising awareness through initiatives from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, understanding this condition is key to taking control. The question isn’t just how to treat arthritis, but how to outsmart it before it takes hold.
Understanding Arthritis and Its Key Symptoms
Arthritis refers to inflammation of one or more joints, leading to pain and limited movement. Common types include osteoarthritis, which stems from wear and tear of joint cartilage, and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks joint tissues. Other forms like gout arise from crystal deposits in joints, while rheumatic arthritis can follow infections.
Key symptoms often start subtly but worsen over time. Persistent pain in joints, especially during movement or after rest, is a hallmark sign. Stiffness, particularly in the morning or after inactivity, can last for hours. Swelling around affected areas, accompanied by warmth and redness, indicates inflammation. Many experience a grinding sensation or crepitation during joint use, along with reduced flexibility that hampers daily activities. According to the Community-oriented Program for Control of Rheumatic Diseases (COPCORD) Bhigwan study, these symptoms are prevalent in rural and urban Indian populations, highlighting the need for early recognition to prevent progression.
Causes and Risk Factors
Several factors contribute to arthritis development, often intertwined with everyday Indian lifestyles. Osteoarthritis commonly results from aging, where joint cartilage degenerates due to repeated stress. Injuries from falls or sports, irregular sleeping patterns, and exposure to cold, damp weather, common in monsoon seasons, can accelerate this process. Rheumatoid arthritis involves genetic predispositions and environmental triggers like infections, while gout is linked to high uric acid levels from dietary habits.
Risk factors abound in modern Indian life. Obesity places extra strain on weight-bearing joints like knees and hips, a concern noted in reports from the Indian Council of Medical Research on non-communicable diseases. Sedentary jobs, prevalent in urban settings, combined with poor posture during long hours at desks, heighten vulnerability. Unhealthy diets low in nutrients but high in processed foods, along with habits like suppressing natural urges or irregular meals, exacerbate issues. Activities such as prolonged kneeling in traditional occupations or twisting movements in sports further elevate risks.
Prevention Strategies
Preventing arthritis begins with proactive lifestyle choices tailored to Indian contexts. Maintaining an optimal weight through balanced nutrition reduces joint stress, incorporate anti-inflammatory foods like ginger, garlic, and turmeric, staples in Indian cuisine. Regular physical activity, such as yoga or brisk walking, strengthens muscles around joints and improves flexibility without overstraining them.
Avoid excessive repetitive motions; for instance, alternate between sitting and standing during work or use supportive cushions for squatting. Hydration is crucial, as adequate water intake lubricates joints. Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol, as recommended, can mitigate risks. Early screening for comorbidities like diabetes, often co-occurring in India, allows timely intervention.
Lifestyle Habits That Help Protect Your Joints
Exercise, the Smart Way – Gentle, targeted movements, like quadriceps strengthening and low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, or cycling, support joint strength and relieve pain. Avoiding high-impact exercises such as running, deep squats, or jumping can help reduce strain and inflammation.
Maintain a Healthy Weight – Excess weight increases pressure on joints, especially knees and hips, accelerating wear and amplifying pain. Even modest weight loss makes a real difference, easing mechanical stress and slowing arthritis progression.
Anti-Inflammatory Diet for Joint Wellness – Food can be medicine. An Indian-style anti-inflammatory diet rich in leafy greens, berries, turmeric, ginger, nuts, seeds, and omega-3-rich fatty fish helps reduce inflammation and supports joint health. Maintaining a balanced vegetarian plan focused on whole foods can also help manage symptoms effectively
Conclusion: Take Control Before Arthritis Does
Arthritis might be common, but it does not have to define your life. By embracing wellness habits, from mindful movement and weight management to healing diets and early action, you hold the power to preserve your joints. The path forward is twofold: nurture your body with consistency, and act at the earliest sign of discomfort. Wisdom and prevention today can transform tomorrow’s mobility, and let living stay free of joint pain.

Aster Medcity Performs Kerala’s First Robotic-Assisted Cardiac Bypass, Ushering in New Era of Cardiac Care
Bangalore, September 15, 2025: Aster Medcity, one of the best multispecialty hospitals in the country, trusted for its clinical expertise and use of cutting-edge technology, has successfully performed the state’s first-ever robotic-assisted Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery, marking a significant advancement in cardiac surgical care. This pioneering procedure was performed on a 42-year-old woman, Ms. Nisha Purushothaman. The patient, hailing from Guruvayur, Thrissur Dist. experienced a rapid recovery and was discharged just four days after the surgery.
Ms. Purushothaman, who was diagnosed with severe triple vessel disease, consulted doctors at Aster Medcity after conventional angioplasty was deemed not a viable option. Fearing a traditional open-heart surgery, which involves a large incision and longer recovery time, the surgical team recommended a robotic-assisted MIDCAB (Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass) procedure, offering her a superior and safer alternative. While minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) has been a significant advancement, robotic assistance takes it to the next level. The robotic system provides surgeons with enhanced precision, control, and visualization during complex operations.
Commenting on this, Mr. Ramesh Kumar, COO, Aster DM Healthcare, said, “At Aster, our mission has always been to bring the most advanced healthcare solutions closer to the people of India. The successful completion of Kerala’s first robotic-assisted cardiac bypass surgery is a proud milestone for us and a transformative step for cardiac care in the region. This breakthrough not only reflects the expertise and dedication of our medical teams but also our commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology that ensures better outcomes and faster recovery for patients. We believe such innovations will redefine the future of surgery, making complex procedures safer, less invasive, and more patient friendly.”
The surgical team from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, under the leadership of Senior Consultant Dr. M.M. Yusuf, performed the complex procedure with precision. Other key members of the team included senior consultants, Dr. Manoj P. Nair and Dr. George Varghese Kurien, and Associate Consultants, Dr. Sabin Sam, and Dr. Jishnu Palliyani.
“Initially I was a little anxious and had some reservations, but when the doctors explained the entire process and how safe robotic-assisted procedure is, it gave me the confidence to go ahead,” said the patient, Ms. Nisha Purushothaman.
The surgical team at Aster Medcity followed the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol, a patient-centered approach designed to help patients recover quickly from major surgery. The robotic-assisted procedure perfectly complemented this protocol by minimizing surgical stress on the body. Robotic-assisted surgery offers significant advantages for patients. It provides a more cosmetically pleasing result with much smaller incisions, which often leads to less visible scarring. It also contributes to a faster recovery, allowing patients to return to their normal daily activities much sooner. Additionally, this advanced technique reduces the risk of post-surgical complications and pain.
Dr. M. M Yusuf, Senior Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery who spearheaded the procedure said, “This is a major leap forward in cardiac surgery. The robotic system allows us to navigate complex anatomical areas with enhanced control and visualization, leading to superior surgical outcomes and reduced trauma for the patient.” said. Dr. George Varghese Kurien, Senior Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery, explained that the robotic arms can maneuver in tight spaces not easily accessible with conventional tools, leading to more accurate surgical steps and minimal blood loss.
Dr. Nalanda Jayadev, Chief Executive Officer, Aster Medcity, Dr. Shuhaib Kader, Chief Operating Officer, Aster Medcity, Dr. Dilip Paniker, Chief of Medical Services, Aster Medcity, Patient Nisha Purushothaman, Senior Consultants from cardiothoracic surgery Dr. M.M. Yusuf, Dr. Manoj P. Nair and Dr. George Varghese Kurien, Associate Consultants, Dr. Sabin Sam, and Dr. Jishnu Palliyani attended the press conference held at Aster Medcity, Kochi.
