Aster Medcity Performs Kerala’s First Non-Surgical Fontan for Single-Ventricle Heart

Aster Medcity Performs Kerala’s First Non- Surgical Fontan Procedure on Children with Single-Ventricle Heart

Kochi, 29th September 2025: Aster Medcity has achieved a major milestone in pediatric cardiology by successfully performing Kerala’s first-ever Transcatheter Fontan completions—a non-surgical alternative for children with complex congenital heart defects. The groundbreaking procedures were performed on two young children, offering them a less invasive path to improved heart function without the need for open-heart surgery.

 Aster Medcity

The Fontan completion is the final and critical stage in the treatment of children born with single-ventricle physiology, a condition where only one heart chamber effectively pumps blood. Traditionally, this requires major surgery to connect the inferior vena cava (IVC) to the pulmonary artery, allowing oxygen-poor blood to reach the lungs without passing through the heart.

One of the first recipients was a five-year-old girl from Idukki, diagnosed with pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, who had previously undergone a Glenn shunt in infancy. Her case was particularly complex due to her family’s Jehovah’s Witness faith, which prohibits blood transfusions, making traditional surgery too risky. The Aster team successfully completed the Fontan circulation using a covered stent, and she was discharged in five days. Two months later, she is thriving.

The second case involved a four-and-a-half-year-old boy from Ernakulam, born with a double inlet left ventricle. Having already undergone two surgeries, his family sought a minimally invasive alternative to avoid a third open-heart procedure. After careful planning and CT imaging, a covered stent was placed, completing the Fontan pathway. The child recovered quickly with no complications.

“This innovative approach offers new hope to families of children with complex heart defects, and we are proud to introduce this advanced, non-surgical treatment in Kerala,” said Dr. Edwin Francis, Director & Senior Consultant – Paediatric Cardiology, Aster Medcity, Kochi.

Both procedures represent a transformative shift in managing single-ventricle heart conditions—achieving Fontan circulation without major incisions, bypass, or blood transfusions.

Sammohan 2025 Concludes with a Powerful Message of Inclusion and Talent

Thiruvananthapuram, September 29, 2025: Sammohan 2025, the National art festival for children with disabilities, concluded today with a vibrant showcase of creativity, resilience, and possibility. Organised by the Different Art Centre (DAC) under the leadership of magician and social innovator Gopinath Muthukad, the two-day national festival brought together over 200 participants from eight states, proving that disability is no barrier to talent.

Sammohan 2025

The festival stage came alive with a wide range of performances — from classical dance, theatre, and music to magic, painting, and folk art. Each act reflected the participants’ determination to challenge stereotypes and celebrate their abilities. The closing ceremony saw enthusiastic participation from families, educators, and disability advocates, underlining the festival’s growing role as a platform for inclusion.

Reflecting on the festival’s vision, Gopinath Muthukad, Founder and Executive Director of DAC, said:

“Sammohan is not just a festival; it is a movement to change mindsets. These children have shown that disability does not define them — their courage and talent do. As we look ahead to Sammohan 2026 on September 26 and 27, we carry forward this spirit of inclusion and hope.”

This year’s edition also highlighted DAC’s broader mission, including the upcoming International Institute for People with Disability (IIPD) in Kasaragod, which will integrate therapy, education, and livelihood training under one roof.

Historic ‘World Kayastha Conclave 2025’ to be Held in New Delhi on October 23–24

WKD 2025

Two-day event at Talkatora Stadium to celebrate heritage, unity, and future leadership of the Kayastha community

New Delhi, September 27, 2025: The All India Kayastha Mahasabha (Regd. 2150, New Delhi) and the Chitransh Chamber of Commerce & Industries (CCCI) today announced that the World Kayastha Conclave 2025 will be held on October 23–24, 2025 at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi.

Announcing the conclave, National Chairman Dr. Abhishek Verma said it will coincide with the auspicious occasion of Yam Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj), traditionally celebrated with the worship of Lord Chitragupta. He added that the conclave will mark a historic opportunity for the Kayastha community to unite and demonstrate its strength.

The Kayastha community traces its origin to Lord Chitragupta, revered as the celestial accountant of Yamraj, responsible for maintaining the record of human deeds. Over the centuries, Kayasthas have played a central role in administration, diplomacy, education, literature, and governance—from the royal courts of ancient India to the modern bureaucracy and judiciary. Although classified among the upper castes, many scholars believe that the unique identity and role of the community distinguish it as a Varna in its own right, with a tradition rooted in knowledge and governance.

Dr. Verma called upon the estimated 12 crore Kayasthas in India to come together, showcase solidarity, and emerge as a significant political and social force to help position India as a ‘Vishwa Guru’ (World Leader) by 2047, the centenary year of independence.

The conclave will also pay tribute to eminent figures of the Kayastha community, including Swami Vivekananda, Khudiram Bose, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Jayaprakash Narayan, Shrikant Verma, Premchand, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Gopaldas Neeraj, Biju Patnaik, and Jyoti Basu. A special tribute will be offered to Balasaheb Thackeray, acknowledging his transformative contribution to Indian politics through the founding of Shiv Sena in 1966.

Dr. Verma further announced the institution of the ‘Shrikant Verma Samman’ in memory of his father, the renowned poet and Parliamentarian, the late Shrikant Verma. This award will be conferred annually, carrying ₹21 lakh for Hindi Literature—the highest award in Hindi literature—₹5 lakh for Journalism, and ₹2 lakh each for Art and Performing Arts.

Sharing details of the upcoming conclave, National President and Convener Manish Srivastava said the two-day event is expected to attract over 25,000 participants and will feature a National Talent Search Examination, a Matrimonial Meet, a Mega Job Fair, and Business and Political Workshops. He also announced plans for the installation of an 111-foot statue of Swami Vivekananda and an 81-foot statue of Lord Chitragupta in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh.

The World Kayastha Conclave 2025 is envisioned not only as a cultural celebration but also as the beginning of social unity, political awakening, and new leadership within the Kayastha community. With its historic association with knowledge and governance, the community is being called upon to rise as an organized force and contribute to India’s emergence as a global leader by 2047.

The announcement was made in the presence of Poet Vishnu Saxena (President, Literary Cell), National Working President Sunil Nigam, National General Secretary Manoj Srivastava, National Vice President Vivek Kulshrestha, National Executive Women cell President Nishi Kulshrestha and other senior members of the organization.

VST Tillers Tractors Passes GST Reduction Benefits to Customers, Enhancing Value and Transparency

Antony Cherukara

September, 26, 2025: In response to recent tax reforms by the Government of India, VST Tillers Tractors, one of India’s leading farm equipment manufacturers, announced that it has passed on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) reduction directly to its customers.

The GST rate on agricultural machinery has been reduced from 12% to 5%, and VST has promptly transferred this benefit to its customers. By adjusting prices in line with the revised GST rates, VST ensures that farmers directly benefit from the government’s fiscal policies, fostering greater trust and loyalty.

Mr. Antony Cherukara, CEO, VST Tillers Tractors Ltd., said, “VST has always been at the forefront of the Make in India movement. As a pioneer in the development of Power Tillers and Compact Tractors in India, we have consistently brought world-class, affordable, and efficient farm equipment to Indian farmers. Our team draws inspiration from the vision of the Honourable Prime Minister of India on promoting Swadeshi products. Passing on this GST reduction is in line with our commitment to support small and marginal farmers in mechanizing their farms. We have also developed and produced 100% Made-in-India power weeders, which can be used with multiple attachments to perform a variety of tasks in small fields, while addressing labour shortages and the narrow operational window for de-weeding in precision crops.”

This GST reduction will further encourage farmers to purchase Swadeshi products, reducing dependence on lower-quality imports that are often unreliable, non-serviceable, and detrimental to long-term farm income. By choosing trusted Indian products, farmers not only gain access to durable and efficient machinery but also contribute to strengthening the rural economy

Leading Nutritionist Debunks “Fear of Fats” Myth at Global Oil Industry Summit

Mumbai, September 26, 2025: The global edible oils industry received a wake-up call today as leading nutrition scientist Dr. James Brooks challenged decades of dietary dogma at Globoil India 2025, the world’s premier oils conference.

Myth at Global Oil Industry Summit

Dr. Brooks, a professor at Clemson University, addressed an audience of international industry leaders and policymakers, asserting that the widespread “fear of fats” dominating dietary advice since the 1950s is scientifically unfounded. He emphasized that palm oil deserves recognition as a valuable component of a healthy diet.

Tracing the origins of today’s fat phobia to Ancel Keys’ controversial ‘lipid-heart hypothesis’ and The Seven Countries Study, Dr. Brooks highlighted critical flaws in the decades-old approach that pushed the reduction of all fats—including total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol—in favor of polyunsaturated fats to reduce heart disease risk.

Citing research by Ateneo de Manila University chemist Dr. Fabian M. Dayrit and American physician Dr. Mary T. Newport (2024), Dr. Brooks explained that the hypothesis failed to distinguish between harmful industrial trans fats and natural saturated fats, assumed all saturated fats have the same effect, and narrowly focused on linoleic acid as the sole representative polyunsaturated fat. While these studies showed cholesterol reduction, they did not demonstrate a corresponding decrease in cardiovascular disease.

In his presentation titled “Malaysian Palm Oil in Today’s Market: Functional Nutrition, Flavor & the Future of Oils & Fats Technologies,” Dr. Brooks outlined palm oil’s balanced nutritional profile: approximately 50% saturated fat, 40% monounsaturated fat, and 10% polyunsaturated fat. He noted that palm oil is naturally free from trans fats and cholesterol, and rich in Vitamin E tocotrienols—potent antioxidants with anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective, and neuroprotective properties. Referencing studies by Teh et al. (2018), Wang (2019), and Marangoni et al. (2017), he affirmed that palm oil has neutral to beneficial effects on blood lipid profiles, comparable to olive, sunflower, and canola oils.

Linking these findings to India, Dr. Brooks highlighted the 2024 Dietary Guidelines for India released by the Indian Council of Medical Research–National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN). The guidelines recognize fats as essential to a balanced diet and advocate moderate consumption of a variety of plant-based oils, including palm oil, to optimize health outcomes.

Expanding on global evidence, Dr. Brooks referenced long-term research such as the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), which showed that simply reducing fat intake does not lower cardiovascular risk. Follow-up of nearly 49,000 women revealed that low-fat diets failed to produce meaningful weight loss or reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes, underscoring the need to focus on fat quality and dietary balance rather than fat quantity alone.

Concluding, Dr. Brooks said, “Palm oil is often misunderstood, but science confirms it can be part of a balanced, heart-healthy diet. Its unique fatty acid profile, rich Vitamin E content, and versatility make it a vital ingredient in addressing global food and nutrition needs. India’s National Mission on Edible Oils–Oilseeds and Oil Palm (NMEO) exemplifies this, promoting farmer welfare, self-reliance, and sustainability, while reinforcing palm oil’s nutritional and economic relevance.”
