Email Phishing Analysis: A SOC Analyst’s Guide to Spotting Suspicious Emails
In the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats, phishing emails remain one of the most persistent and damaging attack vectors faced by organizations globally. Disguised as legitimate communications – ranging from invoices and HR updates to alerts from senior leadership—these malicious messages aim to manipulate unsuspecting recipients into compromising sensitive data or systems.
This comprehensive guide, developed by 5Tattva, serves as a critical resource for SOC Analysts, offering a structured and methodical approach to spotting suspicious emails before they escalate into full-fledged security incidents. At 5Tattva, we believe that empowering analysts with practical knowledge and actionable insights is the first line of defense against phishing.
- The first line of defense lies in analyzing the sender’s identity. Phishing emails often use spoofed or misleading display names, masking the true nature of the sender. That “CEO” email? Might actually be a scammer named Rahul using a burner Gmail. A closer look at the full email address and domain can reveal subtle red flags – such as slight misspellings (like @paypa1.com instead of @paypal.com) or newly registered domains. A quick background check on the domain’s age and legitimacy, paired with a logical assessment of whether the sender would realistically be contacting you, can provide early warnings.
- Subject lines are another telltale sign. Phishing attempts frequently use emotionally charged or urgent phrases like “URGENT: Account Locked!” or “Payroll Issue – Immediate Action Required” or “You won a $500 gift card.” The goal is to trigger panic or curiosity, rushing the recipient into acting without due diligence. You should remain wary of anything that feels manipulative, especially if it’s unexpected or overly dramatic.
- Once inside the email, the body often reveals even more. Links should always be hovered over—never clicked—so analysts can inspect the real destination URL. Suspicious attachments, particularly ZIP files or Microsoft Word documents, should be examined in isolated environments to avoid triggering potential malware. Language inconsistencies, robotic phrasing, or uncharacteristic tone shifts from known contacts can all indicate a phish in action.
- To dig deeper, you should examine the email headers and routing information. This technical metadata provides insight into where the email originated and the path it traveled. You should ensure that the “From,” “Reply-To,” and “Return-Path” fields align. If they don’t—or if the sender claims to be local but the IP address originates from a foreign country—it’s a red flag. For example, if the sender claims to be your HR department but the reply address is scammyboy@fraudmail.com, something’s up. Tracking the email’s “Received” lines can also help identify unusual or suspicious mail flow patterns.
- Email authentication protocols add another critical layer of verification. SPF (Sender Policy Framework) checks whether a mail server is authorized to send on behalf of a domain, while DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) confirms that the email hasn’t been tampered with in transit. DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) builds on both, directing email servers on how to handle failures and providing reports to domain owners. Meanwhile, BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification), though not a security protocol, adds brand trust by displaying a verified logo beside authenticated emails.
- Once a phishing attempt is confirmed, swift action is vital. You should document all indicators of compromise (IOCs), alert relevant stakeholders, remove the email from inboxes, and block the malicious domain. An internal audit should follow to assess if any users interacted with the message. Most importantly, the incident should be transformed into a teachable moment for the broader organization.
“Phishing attacks are evolving faster than ever, but with the right processes, vigilance, and user awareness & trainings / Simulations, organizations can transform these threats into opportunities for education and improvement. At 5Tattva, we strive to equip every SOC analyst with not just tools, but the mindset of a proactive defender, “said Manpreet Singh, Co-Founder & Principal Consultant at 5Tattva and Chief Revenue Officer of Zeroday Ops
Phishing is no longer just an IT problem—it’s an organizational risk that demands constant vigilance and knowledge-sharing. With guides like this from 5Tattva, SOC analysts can stay ahead in this digital cat-and-mouse game, protecting the integrity of enterprise communications and ensuring cyber resilience in a dynamic threat landscape.

Osaka Kabir Yatra: Rajasthani Folk Artists to Share Bhakti and Sufi Traditions in Japan, July 5–12, 2025
Bikaner, July 01, 2025: The Malang Folk Foundation will host the Osaka Kabir Yatra, an international edition of India’s longest traveling folk music festival, the Rajasthan Kabir Yatra, across Osaka and Kyoto from 5th to 12th July 2025. Organized in partnership with the Indian Ocean World Studies (INDOWS) program at the University of Osaka, the Yatra aims to bring together musicians, seekers, and communities in a shared immersion into the spiritual songs of Bhakti and Sufi saints such as Kabir, Meera, Bulleh Shah, Shah Latif, and others. This musical journey will be led by celebrated Manganiyar vocalist Sakur Khan and his ensemble of folk musicians from western Rajasthan.
At Osaka Kabir Yatra, audiences will experience the emotive power of Rajasthani Sufi-folk music through public concerts, immersive student seminars, and interactive musical workshops. The ensemble, led by Nikita Tiwari (Project Director, Malang Folk Foundation), includes traditional instrumentalists Satar Khan (Dholak), Fuse Khan (Sarangi), and Lateeb Khan (Khartal), each bringing the soul and rhythm of the desert to Japanese audiences.
“This unique cultural odyssey brings the timeless wisdom of India’s mystic saints—Kabir, Meera Bai, Bulleh Shah, and others—across the seas to Japan. Through soul-stirring Sufi music performances and reflective sessions, the tour carries the living oral traditions of India to new shores. It’s about awakening deeper questions through music that has lived for centuries on the tongues of wandering saints,” said Gopal Singh Chouhan, Founder of the Rajasthan Kabir Yatra and Malang Folk Foundation.
The Yatra will open with a research workshop and a public Sufi performance titled “A Sufi Musical Evening with Sakur Khan & Ensemble” on 5th July at Osaka University’s Minoh Campus, with free entry for all attendees. This will be followed by a week-long series of seminars and performances exploring key themes in mystic poetry—love, surrender, resistance, and spiritual oneness. Sessions such as “Unapologetically Meera”, “One Song, Many Voices”, and “Spirit of Oneness in Sufism” will invite university students to engage deeply with these living traditions. All sessions will be facilitated by Malang Folk Foundations’ Founder Gopal Singh Chouhan, who is also an independent scholar and archivist. Workshops on traditional Indian instruments and talks on the oral storytelling legacies of India’s desert communities will offer hands-on experiences. These sessions will be exclusive to students.
The festival will conclude with an evening Satsang concert on 11th July at the Utano Youth Hostel in Kyoto, celebrating shared listening and collective reflection. Like the opening concert, this closing event will also be open to the public and free to attend. The performance is going to be held during the Minami Asia Kenkyu Shukai (South Asia Research Colloquium), to be held in Kyoto from 11 to 13 July 2025.
The collaboration between the Malang Folk Foundation and INDOWS emerges from a shared vision of cultural dialogue and spiritual inquiry. It seeks to build bridges across borders through the transformative power of oral traditions, music, and mystic poetry. Regarding this partnership, Gopal Singh Chouhan said, “We are deeply honoured to be hosted by the Indian Ocean World Studies program at the University of Osaka, whose vision of cross-cultural dialogue lies at the heart of this collaboration.”
“The Osaka Kabir Yatra reflects the core vision of the Indian Ocean World Studies program at the University of Osaka—exploring the movement of people, faith, culture, and ideas across the Indian Ocean and its surrounding regions,”said Takashi Miyamoto, Associate Professor, Osaka University.
Supported by cultural archivists, faculty curators, and passionate students, the Osaka Kabir Yatra promises to be more than a musical event—it will be a spiritual exchange, a scholarly dialogue, and a celebration of shared humanity.
If you are in Japan between 5th and 12th July, don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness the soulful magic of Rajasthan’s folk mystics. Come be part of this journey of music, mysticism, and cultural resonance.

Speaking about the event, Mr. Nishant Deshmukh, Founder and Managing Partner of Sugee Group, said, “We are overwhelmed with the response and the collective energy that filled the auditorium. ‘Abhangwaari’ was envisioned as a celebration of devotion, and witnessing communities come together in such spiritual harmony reaffirms our belief in the power of cultural legacy.”
Rahul Deshpande, revered for his classical command and emotive rendition, delivered an unforgettable performance that resonated deeply with spiritual seekers and music connoisseurs alike. With every note and verse, he transported the audience into a realm of devotion, seamlessly weaving together history, emotion, and divine rhythm. The soulful journey featured a thoughtfully curated repertoire of abhangas and devotional compositions, including ‘Sundar Te Dhyaan’, ‘Pandharicha Vaas’, ‘Shriranga Vitthala’, ‘Khel Mandiyela’, ‘Bolava Vitthal’, ‘Kaanada’ along with a vibrant medley of ‘Kaal Dehasi’, ‘Bhagyada’, ‘Abir Gulaal’, ‘Tirth Vitthal’ and ‘Majhe Maaher’ amongst others. Each composition, rendered in perfect harmony and classical depth, invoked the divine presence of Vitthal and echoed the spiritual richness of Marathi devotional literature.
The success of Abhangwaari reaffirms the city’s enduring love for devotional music and the need for platforms that nurture our shared spiritual and cultural ethos. With memories etched in melody, the evening concluded with standing ovations, misty eyes, and hearts full of gratitude.
