Let’s make RTC buses role models for respect

Public Transport is for us, and we must own it and deal with it accordingly to make it a pleasant experience for all

Let’s make RTC buses role models for respect

Hyderabad, July 17, 2025 — As women across Telangana embrace the free bus travel scheme in record numbers, a group of young researchers from EThames Business School is urging a deeper look into the commuting experience, not to find fault, but to find ways forward. Their message is clear: when a free ride sparks a fight, what commuters truly need is respect.

Recent viral videos of seat-related disputes among women commuters in TSRTC buses highlight the growing demand for public transport infrastructure, particularly during peak hours. The study by EThames students emphasises that these are not just isolated clashes, but reflections of the need for greater support systems, awareness, and shared commuter responsibility.

Public transport is more than just mobility — it’s a lifeline for millions. Telangana’s RTC operates over 9,000 buses daily, serving more than 40 lakh commuters across Telangana, a significant proportion of them women. The free travel scheme has empowered countless women with newfound independence and access to education, work, and healthcare.

However, with the rise in ridership, the challenges of overcrowding, comfort, and safety also increase. This study by EThames aims to make a positive contribution to existing efforts by highlighting practical, implementable suggestions to improve travel dignity for all.

The Key Findings from the EThames Study. The study was conducted over 43 days, and the student-led study surveyed 480 women and held 20+ interviews across bus routes in Hyderabad. While 52% of the surveyed respondents reported experiencing discomfort, only 23% were aware of or had used safety tools, such as apps or helplines. Key concerns included overcrowding, undertrained staff, and limited complaint visibility.

Rather than place blame, the students propose enhancements to the existing system to make public transport more respectful and responsive.

The recommendations for a safer, inclusive ride include Gender sensitivity training for RTC staff, QR-code-based complaint systems in buses and terminals, Improved lighting and clean toilets at key bus stops, Women-only buses during peak hours, and Bystander training to empower fellow commuters and Collaborative policing with plainclothes and uniformed staff

The research, instead of just highlighting problems, came out with a lot of suggestions, initiatives and ideas. Some of their suggestions include running a campaign to foster Respect. To complement operational changes, the team also recommends public-facing campaigns:

#MySafeSeat: Real experiences from women commuters

  • Ride With Respect: Visual messaging across buses and bus stands
  • SHE Can Travel: Testimonies from women who benefit from safety upgrades
  • Bus Buddy Program: Student or senior volunteers ride alongside during peak hours
  • Know Your Rights Cards: Helpline info in every bus

The study was conducted by students Divya Bengani, Mishika Chirag Kotecha, Drishti Jain, Syed Osman Ali, and Sayam Jain, under the guidance of Dr. Sahera Fatima and Dr. Naga Lakshmi Kundeti, Assistant Professors at EThames.

“Respect is the ticket every commuter should carry,” the students insist. No one is safe unless everyone is safe, they add.

V.C. Sajjanar, IPS, Vice Chairman & MD of TGSRTC, welcomed the insights and said, “TGSRTC is fully committed to strengthening women’s safety and dignity. We appreciate the EThames study, and many of its suggestions are already being addressed — from increasing bus frequency to crew training, safety helplines, CCTV, bus tracking apps, and collaboration with SHE Teams. Continuous improvement remains our priority.”

Shikha Goel, IPS, Director General, Women Safety Wing (SHE Teams & Bharosa), added: “Every woman deserves to travel freely and fearlessly. This study offers a roadmap to help achieve that, reinforcing our mission to make public spaces safer and more inclusive.”

Several countries offer innovative solutions worth emulating, the students suggest. France allows women to request on-demand night stops closer to home. Brazil’s real-time reporting apps link directly to transit police. Japan and Colombia offer women-only compartments or buses during peak hours. Sweden uses gender-disaggregated data to design safer routes and better-lit stops. Singapore combines AI-driven surveillance with strict law enforcement. These strategies show that behavioral change, design innovation, and tech integration can go hand-in-hand.

Several Indian states have adopted safety initiatives like Pink Buses (Delhi), women-only seats (Bengaluru), and compartments (Mumbai); these remain isolated efforts, not national norms. SHE Teams and free rides for women by SCSC in IT Corridors of Cyberabad are commendable, but systemic challenges like overcrowding, undertrained staff, and limited awareness still prevail.

Let’s together contribute and build a pleasant public transport experience for all.

Artemis Hospitals hosts an Expert Panel on Safe and Ethical Aesthetic Care

Gurugram, July 17, 2025: Artemis Hospitals in Gurugram organized a panel discussion titled “New Age Cosmetic and Aesthetic Wonders” to mark World Plastic Surgery Day. Featuring leading experts in dermatology, plastic surgery, gynecology, and digital media, the session focused on safe, inclusive, and science-backed cosmetic care. Adding a touch of humor, standup comedian Ms. Harpriya’s witty performance had the audience laughing and thoroughly entertained.

The Department of Cosmetology and Plastic Surgery put on the session, which talked about how beauty standards are changing, why people choose certain looks, the rise in male clients, and the need for trained medical advice in a world where beauty trends are influenced by social media.

The day also recognized India’s historical contribution to the domain, tracing plastic surgery’s origins back to ancient physician Sushruta, and highlighting India’s leadership role in starting World Plastic Surgery Day, now celebrated across the world on every July 15.

“Plastic and aesthetic care today is no longer confined to vanity, it’s an extension of mental wellness, body confidence, and emotional recovery,” said Asgar Ali, Head – Sales & Marketing, Artemis Hospitals. “At Artemis, we offer modern solutions that are not just medically advanced, but also emotionally respectful. Our focus is on delivering outcomes that enhance both appearance and quality of life, without compromise on ethics or safety.”

The discussion featured experts from Artemis Hospitals, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Singh (Head – Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery), Dr. Monika Bambroo (Head of Dermatology), Dr. Renu R. Saigal (Chairperson, Obstetrics & Gynecology), and social media influencer Anshul Choudhary. They collectively discussed how there is a growing normalization of aesthetic treatments, covering everything from acne scar removal and lip fillers to rhinoplasty, skin boosters, and cosmetic gynecology.

It was brought to light that there has been an increase in the number of male patients looking for alternatives to hair transplants for personal hygiene. Men from all areas of life are showing signs of a growing trend toward self-care by embracing procedures such as PRP hair treatment, botox, and under eye fillers. The session touched on the psychological nature of cosmetic treatments, highlighting that for most, the choice is highly personal and is frequently connected with deep-seated insecurities or post-traumatic recovery.

“Cosmetic care should never be about chasing perfection. It’s about finding your confidence, correcting genuine concerns, and feeling more like yourself. From post-pregnancy correction to acne scars or aesthetic corrections, people deserve access to responsible solutions, free from stigma and societal judgment. But this must always be led by medical expertise, not market hype. Every patient deserves a safe, stigma-free space to seek help,” they said.

The panel as a whole discussed and debunked a number of common myths regarding aesthetic procedures, particularly those promulgated by social media. They underscored that glutathione injections, commonly promoted for skin lightening, were originally developed for liver care and should only be used under strict medical supervision. It was also made clear that oral collagen supplements are just regular vitamins and minerals and not magic pills that make skin look younger.

The talk also brought up how filters and digitally enhanced beauty standards are making people expect things that aren’t possible, especially teens and young adults. The experts strongly warned against getting cosmetic procedures done at salons or by unlicensed practitioners. They stressed the need for the public to be more aware of this and for the beauty and wellness industry to be more closely monitored. Patients who are getting cosmetic procedures should always choose a center that is well-known, well-equipped, and supervised by a doctor.

India’s First Family Mediation Training held

Hyderabad, July 16, 2025 — A landmark initiative in conflict resolution was held successfully recently. It was India’s first-of-its-kind Family Mediation Training Program. The 7-day, 70-hour intensive workshop, held at the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre (IAMC), Gachibowli, was jointly organised by Invisible Scars Foundation and IAMC Hyderabad.

meditation programme

The program was specifically designed for non-legal professionals working in the social or development sector. It was fully funded under the CSR mandate of Centific, a global digital solutions company.

“This marks the beginning of a new era—where family mediators are trained to support survivors of family and domestic violence and restore peace with dignity,” said the organisers.

“Disputes between spouses often arise over trivial matters. If they sit and talk, many issues can be resolved without court intervention, but that is not happening. We need more mediators to prevent the pile-up of family cases in courts.”

Mediation has deep cultural roots in India, where resolving disputes through dialogue and mutual understanding has long been a preferred approach, especially in matters related to family. Across generations, Indian society has placed a strong emphasis on amicable settlement, reflecting a tradition of prioritizing harmony over conflict.

The workshop brought together 32 participants from across India—Ajmer, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Hazaribagh, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nalgonda, Pune, and Warangal. The cohort included social workers, psychologists, and law enforcement officers, now certified as Family Mediators.

Upon certification, they are empanelled with IAMC and support conflict resolution across programs in GBV, WASH, education, and health, directly within their communities.

The training was conducted by a nationalreceiving numerous requests for training. According to Ekta Viiveck Verma, she plans to organise more such training programs. The NGO is also looking for philanthropic organisations to join hands with them to train more people in ly respected panel of experts. They include Susheela Sarathi – Senior Trainer, MCPC (Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee) of the Supreme Court of India. She has trained many advocates, Judges of the Lower and Higher Judiciary, and Professionals from various walks of life in Mediation.

Tanu Mehta – Mediator and Trainer, Mumbai; K.S. Sarma, the Founder and Director of HAMPS (Hamps Bio Ltd), with a background in the broadcasting industry, having served as CEO of Prasar Bharati and Director General of Doordarshan; Dr. Varudhini Kankipati – Co-Founder, Inner Connect Psychological Counselling Centre, a professional counselling service provider

The program was inaugurated by Ms. Shikha Goel, IPS, Director General, Telangana Cyber Security Bureau, who also shared her personal experience as a trained mediator and urged more professionals to embrace this transformative tool.

Ekta Viiveck Verma, Founder of Invisible Scars Foundation, noted: “Family mediation is not just a legal tool—it’s a healing process. This program equips grassroots professionals with skills to resolve conflicts with empathy and dignity. It is a major step toward building a survivor-first support system.”

AJ Jawad, Lead Faculty and Registrar, IAMC, added: “This program was a national first. For the first time, we are empowering non-legal professionals with real-world mediation tools to address family and domestic disputes.”

The curriculum covered critical modules on trauma, communication, family law, negotiation, and ethics, with both theoretical and practical assessments.

As domestic conflict and abuse rise across India, there is an urgent need for faster, sensitive, and trauma-informed dispute resolution. Family mediation ensures privacy, dignity, and timely outcomes, providing a real alternative to prolonged and painful court cases.

This initiative sets the foundation for an India-wide network of certified family mediators—a vital need in today’s emotionally fractured world.

Invisible Scars has been getting a lot of requests for training. According to Ekta Viiveck Verma, she plans to organise more such training programs. The NGO is also looking for philanthropic organisations to join hands with them to train more people in family mediation.
