Powassan Virus – Everything you need to Know
Authored by Dr. Swati Rajagopal, Consultant – Infectious Disease & Travel Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore
As the world started normalizing and people overcame the havoc wreaked by the Covid-19 pandemic the fear of another pandemic is beginning to spread slowly. Known as the Powassan virus, the deadly infection is slowly spreading across America and has recently claimed the life of a person in the United States. Although rare, Powassan is an untreatable disease and medical experts are yet to find a cure for it. Learning from the Covid-19 pandemic, the Maine Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other doctors and health officials are now alerting the masses about this non-treatable virus and are educating them about its symptoms and preventive measures.
What is the Powassan virus and how can you contract it?
According to the CDC, the Powassan virus spreads to people by the bite of an infected tick. These ticks get infected by sucking the virus from the blood of groundhogs, squirrels, mice, or other rodents and spread the Powassan virus to people and other animals by feeding on them.
Currently, three types of ticks that can spread the Powassan virus to humans have been identified in the eastern half of the United States. These include –
- Ixodes cookei (groundhog tick)
- Ixodes marxi (squirrel tick), and
- Ixodes scapularis (blacklegged or deer tick)
Can ticks get infected by biting humans and is Powassan Virus a communicable disease?
As per recent research, it has been found that the Powassan virus cannot be transmitted from person to person. Furthermore, humans are also considered as the dead-end host for the Powassan virus as people do not develop high enough virus levels in their blood and thus, they cannot infect biting ticks.
The transmission of the Powassan virus from person to person can only occur in rare instances of blood transfusion or through the bite of an infected tick. Therefore, it is recommended that people who have been diagnosed with the Powassan virus must avoid donating blood or bone marrow for at least 120 days after contracting the infection as their blood can infect another person and may lead to the development of a viral chain reaction.
What are the symptoms of the Powassan virus?
While many people infected with the Powassan virus do not show any symptoms, however, the ones with symptoms the time duration from tick bite to feeling sick usually ranges from 1 week to 1 month. The signs and symptoms of the Powassan include –
- Fever
- Headache
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Severe Brain and Spine diseases like Encephalitis and Meningitis
- Confusion
- Loss of Coordination
- Difficulty in speaking
- Seizures
To date, it has been found that approximately 1 out of 10 people with severe disease die and roughly half of the people who survive severe Brain and Spine disease have long-term health problems such as recurring headaches, loss of muscle mass and strength, and memory problems.
How can you prevent yourself from the Powassan virus?
Currently, there are no vaccines or medications to stop or restrict the spread of the Powassan virus. However, you can prevent yourself from getting sick with the Powassan virus by following the below-mentioned tips –
- Avoiding the areas such as grassy, brushy, or wooded places where ticks can be easily found
- Check your clothes for ticks and remove them by washing them with hot water or by applying a dryer
- Examine your pets for ticks
- Shower as soon as you are indoors
- Conduct a full body check for ticks
In case you are experiencing any of the above symptoms or have a tick bite then you must consult your nearest healthcare provider.

Chopard at the 1000 Miglia 2023
The Maison’s 36th appearance as world sponsor and official timekeeper
Chopard is proud to return to Brescia for the 36th time in succession as the World Sponsor and Official Timekeeper of the 1000 Miglia – otherwise known as ‘the most beautiful race in the world’.The partnership represents one of the longest in history between a watchmaker and an automobile event, signifying Chopard’s well-known love of classic cars and its passion for motorsport. That passion is further confirmed by the fact that 2023 marks the 35th occasion that Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele will compete in the race from Brescia to Rome and back, having first taken part in 1989 with six-times Le Mans 24 Hours winner Jacky Ickx in the navigator’s seat. The pair will team-up again this year (as on more than a dozen previous occasions), once more tackling the gruelling course in the instantly recognisable ‘metallic raspberry’ Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing in which they made their 1000 Miglia debut. And, of course, Chopard will continue its tradition of introducing new Mille Miglia timepieces, with four Mille Miglia Classic Chronographs, plus an additional, very special ‘Italian Limited Edition’ of the Mille Miglia GTS Chronograph – some of the proceeds from which will be donated to victims of the recent Emilia-Romagna flood disaster.

A new route, a new city – and an extra day
The 1000 Miglia was first run in 1927 but –in keeping with its reputation for never growing old–this year’s event features a new route and will be run over the course of five days rather than the usual four. For the first time the race will incorporate a section from Parma to Milan, a city never before included in the 1000 Miglia and the location from which the 405 starters will make their home run to Brescia on the final day (Saturday, June 17th).
In between, the course takes them in a clockwise direction, with day one ending in an overnight stop on the coast atCervio-Milano Marittima. An early start on Wednesday sends the group to the tiny, hilltop republic of San Marino (the fifth smallest country in the world) and up to 300 metres above sea level for a lunch break in Macerata, a town renowned for its striking palazzos and annual opera festival. The day finishes in Rome when the cars will parade around the city, followed by a dawn start on Thursday for the six-hour run to lunch in Siena (scene of the historic Palio horse race).

After tackling the famous Abertone Pass – frequently used by Ferrari’s test drivers – the crews end-up in Parma where they spend the night before heading out on Friday morning to begin the ‘home run,’ stopping at Piacenza military airport to mark the centenary of the AeronauticaMilitareItaliana. After lunch in Alessandria and a further five hours on the road, the competitors will check-in at the new Milan time control point before dinner and a well-earned night’s rest.
A civilised 8am start on Saturday marks the beginning of the final 100 kilometres of the course, which will take the surviving cars back to the finish at Brescia where they will parade along the tree-lined Viale Venezia.
Two cars compete for Team Chopard
In addition to the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing crewed by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and Jacky Ickx, Chopard Ambassadors Zhu Yilong, the acclaimed Chinese actor, and Romain Dumas, the celebrated endurance racing driver, will also compete under the ‘Team Chopard’ banner in a 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster.
A pre-start dinner in a stunning setting
But before the flag drops to wave the first car off the Brescia start ramp on Tuesday (June 13th), Karl-Friedrich Scheufele will host a special welcome dinner at the beautiful and historic L’Albereta hotel, just 20km from Brescia and close to the shores of Lake Iseo within the breathtakingly beautiful Lombardy countryside. Here, guests will discover the new Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph collection that celebrates this year’s race – maintaining Chopard’s tradition of creating an all-new, dedicated design that has prevailed each year since 1988.
The 2023 Mille Miglia watches – the tradition continues
Comprising four new models crafted in Chopard’s exclusive Lucent Steel™ (50 per cent more resilient than regular steel and incorporating material recycled from the medical, aerospace, car and watch industries), the 40mm chronographs are fitted either with Maison’s signature rubber strap based on the pattern of a ‘60s Dunlop race tyreor a rich brown calfskin leather strap evoking traditional driving gloves.

What makes this year’s Mille Miglia Classic Chronographs extra-special, however, are their dials: each of the four variations is based on the paint hues and interior finishes typically found on the type of pre-1957 cars that are eligible for the 1000 Miglia. That means a choice of Rosso Amarena (cherry red), Grigio-Blu (grey blue), Verde Chiaro (light green) andNero Corsa (racing black). In keeping with a 36-year tradition, each watch carries a miniature ‘1000 Miglia’ route marker on its dial and case back.
In addition to the Mille Miglia Classic Chronographs, Chopard has also produced a very special version of its larger Mille Miglia GTS Chrono.Being made from Lucent Steel™ in just 100 examples, part of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to victims of the devastating floods that swept through the Emilia-Romagna region in early May. This 44mm edition carries the green and red colours of Italy, with its olive green bezel featuring a tachymeter scale for speed and distance calculations. Further marking-out the ‘form and function’ nature of Chopard’s Mille Miglia watches, the Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Limited Edition Italy is also fitted with substantial ‘mushroom’ pushers and a large diameter crown to provide a firm grip and ease of use while on the road.
Both the Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph editions and the Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Limited Edition Italyare the prefect watches for anyone taking part in ‘the most beautiful race in the world’ as well as for those who follow it.And whether you are one or the other, we wish you a thrilling but safe journey to the finish.

Former GreeniesⓇ Founder Reenters The $110 Billion Treat Market With All New Complementary, One-A-Day Wellness Product
Yummy Combs Offers Dogs a Tasty Treat That Addresses Nutrition, Dental and Choking Hazards Via Unique Design
Dr. Joe Roetheli and his wife Judy turned entrepreneurs in 1996 when they began a pet product company with the dental treat known by many dogs and cats as “Greenies®”. The serial ‘couplepreneur’ dream team started the company with a blank sheet of paper, no business experience and no appreciable capital–relying on their love of dogs and an entrepreneurial spirit to succeed.
After growing the company to the eighth largest pet food/treat company in the world and receiving over 4 dozen awards, the company was sold to Mars, Inc. in 2006. Joe and Judy remain entrepreneurs today with their more recent launch of http://petsbestlife.com. Its newly formulated product is a full-body pet treat that addresses dental health, superior nutrition, and great taste, while actively battling choking hazards through special product innovations.
The Yummy Combs hexagonal design containing a bee’s nest, offers 60 total benefits based on three full body needs in a single, one-a-day treat. This idea of Complimentary Wellness includes:
–Dental: The honeycomb design gives dogs a 360ᵒ doggie powered flossing device with up to 256 scrubbing surfaces. 80% of dogs over the age of 3 have some form of gum disease as a result of tartar accumulation on teeth and Yummy Combs deter tartar as validated by the coveted Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) Seal of Acceptance for Tartar Control.
–Nutrition: YummyCombs provide superior nutrition with all 22 required amino acids and all vitamins and minerals required for a dog to survive, plus 12 special ingredients to enhance wellness. 60% of dogs over the age of 2 are overweight from too much starch and too little exercise. Treats typically have about 40% starch and less than 14% protein, but Yummy Combs flips that on its head by delivering the reverse with 47% protein and less than 7% starch.
–Safety: The unique shape also offered safety from an issue plaguing dogs for a century–choking, affecting 200,000 dogs a year. Yummy Combs delivers 4 innovative concepts to deter gulping, choking, and blockages.
“Brushing/Flossing a dog’s teeth is typically not an easy task especially on an every-day basis,” notes Roetheli. “After selling Greenies® in 2006, we jumped back into the dog treat business to deliver innovation on key issues that impact dogs’ lives and to provide better health, happiness, extended life, and more enjoyment for dog and owner. Surprisingly, it revolves around a revolutionary new shape.”
Yummy Combs are for dogs 6 months and up and are available in five sizes for small to extra large breeds. United Group’s Vivacom to Trial Parallel Wireless ORAN Technologies in Bulgaria
Nashua, New Hampshire, United States, June 14, 2023 – United Group and Parallel Wireless have agreed to trial new Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) technology in Bulgaria using Vivacom’s network, the country’s leading mobile network operator, which is owned by United Group.
US-based Parallel Wireless is a leading provider of ORAN technology that encapsulates all generations of cellular connectivity, including 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G. The trial in Bulgaria will include ORAN 2G, 4G, and 5G and will include a cluster of sites that demonstrates the successful implantation of ORAN networks in both urban and rural environments. The purpose of the trial is to show equivalent or improved performance compared to traditional radio access networks (SRAN). The trial will consist of both lab and in-field tests to ensure the technology can perform across Bulgaria and on Vivacom’s existing network.
“ORAN brings opportunities for greater vendor diversity and much-needed innovation in the mobile radio network sector,” said Nikolay Andreev, CEO of Vivacom. “This technology will provide flexibility and competitiveness for operators, and improved services for customers. We hope this trial will be the first step in delivering ORAN technology to Bulgaria.”
Until recently, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) had to rely on vendors to supply the full RAN infrastructure, including hardware and software. ORAN disaggregates hardware and software components, which grants MNOs flexibility to build their networks using non-proprietary subcomponents from a variety of different vendors.
“Bulgaria is a great place to showcase the benefits of ORAN demonstrating its flexibility and agility, allowing United Group & Vivacom the freedom to choose its vendors without being locked in with one specific vendor”, said Steve Papa, Founder & CEO of Parallel Wireless.
About United Group:
Dutch-based United Group is the leading telecommunications and media operator in South-East Europe. Active in eight countries, the company has more than 15 million users and nearly 15,000 employees. It generates almost €2.7 billion in annual revenues. United Group has the widest network coverage in the region and offers users the most attractive selection of TV content from around the world. Significant investments in digital infrastructure, content and technology ensure the excellence of the products and services it provides to customers. United Group has been majority owned by BC Partners, one of the largest global investment companies, since March 2019.
About Parallel Wireless:
US-based Parallel Wireless’s ALL G (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G) Open RAN software platform has been deployed with global Mobile Network Operators from across six continents and forms an open, secure, and intelligent RAN architecture to deliver wireless connectivity, so all people can be connected whenever, wherever, and however, they choose. Schools should imbibe values of sustainability among students at an early age

By Niru Agarwal, Trustee, Greenwood High International School
Robert Swan says, “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” In the current world scenario, there is consensus that children must be taught values of sustainability so that they can help future generations imbibe the same. This is the apt message for World Environment Day 2023, which is focused on #BeatingPlasticpollution. Planet Earth faces so many risks & abuses that taking environmental action is even more urgent. From biodiversity to solar energy, there is now a need to build a greener earth, and in this journey, schools indeed play a key role in encouraging students to learn new ways to build sustainability. Educating students will promote awareness, address the current vacuum, and help build perspective toward environmental needs having sustainable development goals. Hence, we should look at diverse ways in which schools can help students be green warriors at an early age.
Schools should involve wider community
Sustainability involves everyone working together in small ways to achieve something huge. It is both an individual and a team effort. If you can get parents and guardians involved in your sustainability initiatives, the lesson will go even further. This means that everyone needs to be involved and teachers and school leaders should lead by example. Whether it is cycle-to-work initiatives, installing solar panels, or bringing a lunch in sustainable packaging, sustainability must be modelled as well as taught. To be truly sustainable, schools should fully engage with these activities, which means helping teachers and staff members and going beyond the school gates.
Imbibe sustainable life skills
To live a sustainable lifestyle, children and society’s youth should be urged to undertake individual responsibilities, such as minimising resource usage, composting, reducing over-consumption, depending on clean energy sources, practising minimalism, and purchasing local and organic items. Education on sustainability will help them develop these sustainable life skills and practices.
Developing a critical mindset
Teaching sustainable ways of living helps in creating a critical mindset among children. They understand that they need to look beyond the materialistic values of things and learn to appreciate their intrinsic value. Reusing and recycling materials can prevent wastage and over-production, which is the principal cause of over-industrialization and carbon emissions. Recycling has taken the world by storm and schools need to take measures that will enable students to further intensify this approach.
Build solutions into lessons
Students should not grow up with neglect about the environment. They must be taught everything there is to know about the planet and this is best done by incorporating such ideas in a curriculum. This will create awareness on all aspects of the earth and how best to protect it. The syllabus can have a mix of theoretical concepts, knowledge and practical steps that will surely enhance the intellect of students and enable them to learn new aspects of the environment.
Bring down consumerism
Consumerism is at an all-time high, but teaching children how to thrift can make them more conscious about wastage and prevent them from binge buying when they are old enough to buy things for themselves. Living a minimalist lifestyle can teach them how one needs only a handful of good and well-loved items to live a fulfilling life. Students will have to be shown a broader view of things when they learn how much they can save the planet by making better choices.
In conclusion, it can be said that education plays a crucial role in raising the younger generations’ awareness in the right direction and safeguarding their future sustainability. The right direction will allow young people to make conscious decisions and lead greener lifestyle with their evolved knowledge and understanding of the natural surroundings. Early education, especially at school, will lead to mature individuals proactively managing global challenges, contributing to a greener and healthier planet. Students are the future advocates and educating today’s youth is imperative to enable environmental conservation.
