Apple Enters New Era as John Ternus Succeeds Tim Cook as CEO
New Delhi, Sep 1: Apple has begun a new chapter in its leadership with John Ternus taking over as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Tim Cook after more than a decade at the helm of the technology company.
Pic Credit: Pexel
Ternus assumed the position on September 1, bringing an end to Cook’s tenure as CEO, which began in August 2011 after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs stepped down.
Cook has moved into the newly created position of Executive Chairman. In this role, he will focus on engagement with policymakers around the world and continue to support the company on selected strategic matters. Ternus has also joined Apple’s board of directors.
Ternus brings extensive experience in Apple’s product development and engineering operations. He joined the company in 2001 as part of its product design team and was appointed senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2021.
Over the years, Ternus has played a role in the development of several of Apple’s key products, including the iPhone, iPad, AirPods and Mac. His hardware engineering team has also contributed to the company’s latest product launches.
The leadership transition comes after a period of significant expansion for Apple. During Cook’s tenure, the company’s market value increased substantially, rising from around $350 billion in 2011 to approximately $4 trillion.
Apple’s annual revenue has also expanded from about $108 billion when Cook became CEO to more than $400 billion. The company’s services division has emerged as another major growth engine, generating more than $100 billion annually through businesses such as the App Store, Apple Music and Apple Pay.
Ternus takes over at a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the technology industry. The growing competition in AI presents one of the biggest strategic challenges for Apple as it seeks to keep pace with rivals while protecting its position in premium consumer technology.
A key priority for the new CEO will be strengthening Apple’s AI capabilities while maintaining the ecosystem that connects its hardware, software and services.
Ternus will also be expected to guide the company through its next phase of product innovation, manage intensifying competition and identify new opportunities for growth.
His background in hardware engineering gives him deep experience with Apple’s product development process. The challenge now will be to combine that expertise with a broader technology strategy as AI, cloud services and connected devices increasingly shape the global technology market.
The change in leadership marks the end of one of Apple’s longest CEO tenures and the beginning of a new phase under Ternus, with investors and consumers watching closely for how the company evolves its products, services and AI strategy.

Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad crosses 300 Liver Transplants – Highest in Gujarat
The Odyssey of sailing through the tumultuous sea of liver complexities
AHMEDABAD, India, Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The rise of sedentary jobs, lack of exercise and increased intake of processed foods have slowly driven one of the fastest-growing liver conditions, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which now affects 1 in 4 adults1,2.
Left untreated, it can progress through inflammation (NASH), scarring, and eventually cirrhosis or liver cancer3. This rising disease burden runs headlong into a stark shortage. Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad, continues to push against this gap, and has recently crossed 300 liver transplants, marking a major liver transplant milestone for Zydus Hospital Ahmedabad.
Liver Transplant surgeries are multidisciplinary endeavours, complex and demanding. Zydus Hospital, through its liver transplant programme in Ahmedabad, challenges the existing limits of surgical capabilities and focuses on a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach that sees a close coordination of experts across liver transplant surgeon, liver critical care specialist, anaesthesia, hepatologist, gastroenterologist, and nephrology (in case of simultaneous liver-kidney transplantation, or SLKT), who work in tandem to expand horizons for patient benefit.
The team has successfully performed living donor and deceased donor liver transplants, ABO-incompatible liver transplants, paediatric liver transplants, planned transplants for chronic liver disease (CLD), and emergency cases of acute liver failure. “Almost 40% of our patients arrive with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), and need a transplant within 24 to 36 hours of arriving” says Dr. Anand Khakhar, liver transplant and HPB surgeon in Ahmedabad, who has more than two and half decades of experience and is a recipient of the Dr. B.C. Roy Award. He recalls a 12-year-old boy who was rushed from Junagadh with ALF. “He was comatose, on ventilator support and dialysis. The one thing we could not afford in his case was sepsis or hypotension.” A drop in blood pressure could cause blood vessels to dilate further and rapidly worsen the his condition. “The child’s mother came forward as a donor, and while her evaluations were underway, he developed hypotension and sepsis was suspected,” said Dr. Anand. On closer assessment, the team determined it was necrotic tissue that was producing those symptoms. “We removed the necrotic liver, and stabilised him long enough that we could safely proceed with the transplant,” added Dr. Anand. The boy responded well during post-op and soon returned home. Performing such complex and challenging liver transplant cases need advanced infrastructure. As Dr. Yash Patel, Liver Transplant Surgeon, adds, “At Zydus, we have access to modular advanced OTs, dedicated liver ICUs, advanced MRI facilities, FibroScan imaging along with multidisciplinary support under one roof.”
Younger adults arrive in the same critical state, sometimes with added complications. A 22-year-old architecture student came to Zydus with ALF and was in a similar state. “In his case, in addition to dialysis, we also had to add toxin filters and he only had one suitable donor, his sister, but their blood group did not match,” says Dr. Anand. “We usually need to disable pre-existing antibodies with rituximab as part of a larger protocol that includes plasma exchange but as he was not in a condition to tolerate the rituximab, we ran a continuous plasma exchange until his antibody level came down to a level where his body could tolerate the transplant. We then proceeded with removing his spleen, and then transplanted his liver. The surgery went well and he recovered well” said Dr. Anand. Careful immunosuppression post-op balances the risk of organ rejection against infection risk and supports wound healing. “We have always prioritised the need and safety of our patients. If there are hurdles in the way, we try our best to overcome them,” added Dr. Khakhar.
“We, in India, have a huge burden related to chronic liver disease and its complications. Years back, in our early gastroenterology practice, there was no treatment for patients with advanced liver disease. We are fortunate to have a complete liver unit with an excellent transplant team at Zydus Hospital under one roof. Not only it has given a new hope but also a new life to these patients, who otherwise would have had a very poor quality of life and lifespan,” adds Dr. Nilay Mehta, Sr. Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist.
Dr. Himanshu Sharma, Liver Critical Care Specialist adds, “There is a common misconception that NAFLD which includes NASH is exclusive to individuals who are obese or overweight.” Despite a normal weight, affected individuals can still store harmful visceral fat around the liver. Recently, 37-year-old patient was airlifted from Chandigarh in a dire state. He was diagnosed with lean NASH related CLD. “His pre-op issues were significant and he had lost significant muscle mass. He was 6ft tall and weighed only 43kgs. He came with lower abdominal wall infection and a bad case of cellulitis. We needed to stabilise him before going ahead with the transplant. Our ICU team along with physiotherapy and rehab, put in tremendous work and helped him rebuild his strength over the month he spent with us. He recovered slowly and was discharged. It’s been two years now and he’s doing well and gone back to practicing law,” Dr. Himanshu added. The Liver Critical Care team and the transplant rehab specialist, Dr. Himani Goswami along with Shruti Bhardwaj, Nutritionist, played a tremendous role in his journey to recovery and normalcy.
At the core, Zydus understands the importance of multidisciplinary work across different fields and creates an environment where teams can collaborate and work on demanding cases comprehensively. A 50-year-old man from Raipur, suffering from Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), was admitted to Zydus Hospital. ADPKD is the most commonly inherited cause of end-stage kidney disease, which sees the development of several large cysts in both kidneys. “This patient needed simultaneous liver and kidney transplantation. Further, his large native left kidney was full of cysts and had to be removed to make space for the transplanted kidney. One large liver cyst contained a large amount of pus, making its removal additionally difficult,” said the team. Several factors complicated his case and transplanting both his organs successfully was indeed a ‘Herculean task’.
Navigating such dual transplants involve several intricacies due to the stark differences in anaesthesia, critical care goals and pre- and post-op goals of both liver and kidney transplant teams. These and many such diabolically opposite requisites are usually resolved through superior clinical acumen and a higher-order cognitive collaboration between the stalwarts in the field. The team at Zydus includes top Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists in Gujarat including Dr. Nilay Mehta, Dr. Ajay Choksey, Dr. Hardik Kotecha, and Dr. Tejas Modi, renowned Nephrologists, Dr. Himanshu Patel, Dr. Prakash Darji, Dr. Devang Patwari and Dr. Kamal Goplani, Anaesthetists, Dr. Meeta Agarwala, Dr. Kairav Shah, Dr. Vikram Patel, Dr. Paragsinh Gohil and Dr. Nimesh Prajapati, and Radiologist, Dr. Bhavik Shah and team. This cross-discipline integration of such kind ensures excellent patient care and a holistic approach to patient management.
In South-east Asia, almost 80% patients are living donors. In this scenario, donor safety in living donor liver transplantation is of the utmost importance. “To operate on them safely, send them home in good health, and make sure their recovery is unhindered — that’s our goal,” says Dr. Yash. “These donor surgeries are major in their own right, and the focus we put into them is what sets us apart, I feel. Donor safety is very close to my heart” he adds. There is also an urgent need for living donors who can come forward and help create organ donation awareness amongst the community, as liver is a regenerative organ, and a part of it can be donated without disturbing the quality of life. To know more, visit https://zydushospitals.com
Innovations in medical science are reflected in the evolution of newer, safer and more sophisticated techniques that have significantly enhanced the quality and viability of liver transplants. At Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad, such advances are translated into clinical excellence and have brought renewed hope to thousands of patients and their families.

UPI Sets New Monthly Record as Digital Payments Touch 24.51 Billion in August
New Delhi, Sep 1: India’s digital payments landscape continued to expand at a rapid pace in August, with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recording a new monthly high of 24.51 billion transactions worth Rs 29.82 lakh crore.
Data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) showed that UPI transaction volumes increased 3.6 per cent from 23.66 billion in July. On a year-on-year basis, transaction volumes rose 22 per cent, highlighting the growing dependence of consumers and businesses on instant digital payments.
The value of transactions, however, remained broadly stable on a monthly basis. UPI processed transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore in July, compared with Rs 29.82 lakh crore in August, marking a marginal decline of around 0.2 per cent. On a year-on-year basis, transaction value increased 20 per cent.
On an average day, UPI processed nearly 791 million transactions during August, while the average daily transaction value stood at around Rs 96,205 crore.
The latest performance underlines how deeply digital payments have become embedded in everyday economic activity. From neighbourhood shops and food outlets to online purchases, utility payments and money transfers, UPI has increasingly become a preferred payment option because of its speed and convenience.
The sharp rise in transaction volumes, despite the marginal decline in overall value from July, also points to the continued popularity of smaller-ticket digital payments. The government has noted that a large share of UPI merchant transactions consists of payments below Rs 500, reflecting its widespread use for routine purchases.
UPI’s growth has been particularly striking over the past decade. The platform has evolved from a relatively new digital payment system into a core part of India’s financial infrastructure, with annual transaction volumes rising dramatically since its launch.
The August milestone comes after UPI crossed the 23-billion monthly transaction mark earlier this year. Its latest performance further reinforces the platform’s position at the centre of India’s shift towards a real-time, mobile-first payments ecosystem.
Meanwhile, the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) recorded 360 million transactions in August, with the transaction value rising 18 per cent year-on-year to Rs 7.04 lakh crore, according to NPCI data.
UPI is also steadily expanding its international footprint, with the payment system now available for merchant payments in multiple countries. The expansion is enabling Indian travellers to use familiar UPI-enabled applications for digital payments overseas while strengthening India’s presence in the global real-time payments ecosystem.
With transaction volumes continuing to set new records, the August numbers highlight the increasing role of digital payments in India’s consumer economy and the growing preference for fast, convenient and interoperable payment methods.

HiLITE Group Hands Over Olympus Tower 1, Reshaping Modern Urban Living and a Sense of Community at HiLITE City, Calicut

Kozhikode, Sept 01: HiLITE Group has handed over Olympus 1, the first tower of HiLITE Olympus, an ultra-modern residential development that brings together luxury, expansive amenities and nature at HiLITE City, Kozhikode. Set across 7.07 acres, Olympus features more than 100 amenities and India’s largest terrace recreation space, spanning over 40,000 sq ft, alongside 526 apartments across 33 floors. With a built-up area of 12,70,039 sq ft and apartments ranging from 919 sq ft to 3,150 sq ft, Olympus is designed to offer a distinctive, future-ready living experience. Sustainability and urban forestry are woven into the development, creating a balance between modern comforts and green spaces. The second tower, Olympus 2, comprises 412 apartments across 32 floors and is currently under construction.
Unlike conventional designs where multiple towers accommodate numerous apartments, all 938 apartments across the project are designed within just two towers. Each tower features a single straight passage connecting the apartments, a distinctive architectural choice that enhances connectivity and togetherness among residents. Beyond its architectural brilliance, Olympus is built on the idea of community living.
The concept of community living within a luxurious space was a vision deeply rooted in the mind of P. Sulaiman, the driving force behind HiLITE. “When someone chooses to settle in their homeland, they should not only experience global standards of luxury but also be part of a vibrant, secure, and engaging community,” said P. Sulaiman, Chairman, HiLITE Group. His vision was brought to life through the meticulous design crafted by Stapati Architects, ensuring that Olympus stands as a benchmark in modern living.
This sense of community is further strengthened by 100+ unparalleled amenities spread across what is among India’s largest recreation terraces. From expansive social spaces to world-class recreational facilities, every detail has been thoughtfully planned to create a living experience like no other.
Olympus 1‘s handover comes close on the heels of two other significant project completions by HiLITE Group, HiLITE Cypress and HiLITE Patras, emphasizing the Group‘s consistent momentum in delivering premium residential spaces across Calicut. The Group has already inaugurated HiLITE Countryside project at Chemmad, an innovative retail concept introduced by the Group, for smaller towns and emerging Tier 3 markets. It functions as a compact extension of the Group’s flagship HiLITE Mall format, tailored to deliver high-quality retail, dining, and entertainment experiences closer to rapidly developing locales.
“Bringing a project of this scale and ambition to Calicut has been both a privilege and a responsibility, and we are truly proud to see it take shape as one of the finest residential innovations in the region,” said Ajil Mohammed, CEO of HiLITE Group.
With 22 apartments on a single floor, HiLITE Olympus sets several records straight. Apart from the enormous terrace, the Plaza on the 4th Basement, sprawling across 20,000+ sq ft, provides further space for various amenities. Residents of HiLITE Olympus need not look elsewhere for entertainment and relaxation, they only need to step onto the recreational floor.
“This project is the culmination of meticulous planning and architectural innovation to redefine what urban living truly means. Every detail, from its architecture to its amenities, has been thoughtfully designed to give our residents an unmatched quality of life,” said Mohamed Fazeem, CEO – HiLITE Builders.
Located within HiLITE City, one of India’s largest mixed-use developments, HiLITE Olympus offers residents a host of added advantages, all within reach at HiLITE City. This includes the HiLITE Mall and HiLITE Business Park, along with everyday conveniences such as Hug a Mug, a 24×7 coffee shop, and Palaxi Cinemas, an 8-screen world-class theatre. Residents can also unwind at Compass, a dedicated center for rejuvenation, or spend time at Club 6T6. Adding to the everyday convenience is a 65,000 sq. ft. hypermarket within HiLITE Mall, while HiLITE City is home to over 2,000 apartments.

“PARSOL® Shield approval represents an important step forward not only for dsm-firmenich, but for the future of sun protection in the U.S.,” said Parand Salmassinia, Beauty & Care President at dsm-firmenich. “This milestone reflects years of scientific leadership, regulatory collaboration, and commitment to bringing meaningful innovation to consumers.”
Clinical studies with PARSOL® Shield (BEMT), involving nearly 500 participants representing the diversity of the U.S. population, demonstrated exceptional UV efficacy, excellent tolerability, and an excellent safety profile.
PARSOL® Shield (BEMT) helps address real consumer needs, from reducing the risk of skin cancer to protecting against long-term UV-induced skin damage and premature photoaging. For formulators, it enables silky, lightweight sunscreen textures with strong photostability and formulation flexibility.
“This approval marks a landmark step for sun protection in the United States,” said Dr. Jochen Klock, Director Global Regulatory Affairs, Beauty & Care at dsm-firmenich. “It closes a longstanding innovation gap in the U.S. sunscreen market and reflects a modern scientific and regulatory standard that can help expand access to advanced UV protection for American consumers.”
Already approved across multiple global regions, PARSOL® Shield (BEMT) also enables the development of global sunscreen formulations that simplify product strategy, reduce formulation complexity, and accelerate speed-to-market.
Its broad-spectrum protection is a key benefit, while its high efficiency at low concentrations contributes to a strong eco-profile and helps brands address evolving sustainability expectations and reporting requirements.
“Our customers have been waiting for more flexibility and innovation in the U.S. sunscreen market for years,” said Ashley Lebbe, Vice President, Global Sales Beauty & Care at dsm-firmenich. “PARSOL® Shield opens new opportunities to create future-ready sunscreen solutions with global scalability and elevated consumer experience.”
The approval reinforces dsm-firmenich’s long-standing commitment to public skin health advocacy, including collaborations with regulators, NGOs, legislators, and organizations such as the Skin Cancer Foundation and Destination Healthy Skin initiative.

The partnership demonstrates how deep technical collaboration between a Singapore-based IoT hardware company and a global semiconductor leader can go beyond a traditional supplier-customer model. Together, Tack One and Infineon co-developed a solution that reduces reliance on external infrastructure, supports energy efficiency and enables scalable adoption in infrastructure-limited environments.
The SICC Awards recognition highlights the role of cross-industry innovation in building resilient, sustainable solutions that address pressing real-world challenges.
